If you deal with mammal hair identification you need this book. The identification keys are good, and also the drawings, but the microscope photographs are of low print quality.

The Atlas of European Mammals is the first project of the Societas Europaea Mammalogia (SEM), founded in Paris in 1988, and is the result of more than 10 years of work by specialists throughout Europe.
Under the supervision of an editorial committee, coordinators have collected and validated distribution data for every European country using an agreed species list and a standard mapping system. This landmark volume presents maps of 194 species plotted on a 50 km UTM grid and based entirely on field observations. Over 93,000 records are mapped with separate symbols for data collected before or after 1970. Where appropriate, recent extinctions have been taken into account so that these maps represent the most up-to-date picture possible of the distribution of each species in Europe. Everyday use of the Atlas.......2000-03-29
There are 194 mammal species living in Europe. Some of them are common, widespread and well known, but others are rare and mysterious. What makes the Atlas especially valuable is that it gives accounts on all of them. Equally. I personally use it either to find out what species could be expected in a given geographical region (going on vacation somewhere?), or I seek what species of a given higher taxonomic unit occur in Europe and finally, one can find detailed information on distribution border line of the species of interest. The maps of the Atlas are its best features. On the other side, the text possess small mistakes in some places. But finding information on species is usually not as difficult as finding thorough details on its distribution. I rank this book as high as I could.

I hate to say this since I have most of Lilly Walters' books and absolutely live by them in my consulting/speaking business, but this book held very few surprises or new ideas for me. For me, though, the best part and worth the price of the book was the Glossary of Terms. Totally invaluable.
you can't tell this book by its title.......2005-10-18
This book is a major rip-off. Its title leads you to believe you'll get ideas that you can immediately put into action to generate relatively immediate sales. Allow me to quote some random examples:
#385: Focus your marketing efforts on those companies and industries that can afford to pay for your services.
#393: Market to your best bets first--those you are fairly sure will buy.
#766: Keep a map of your country and world map with time zones, zip codes, and telephone area codes.
#1189: Get it in writing.
She even includes a couple of tips on what to do if you receive a suspicious parcel -- a bomb, I presume.
The bomb is this book. Her tips are not about making more money. They're about walking and chewing gum at the same time. It's a great book for rank beginners. But she should change the title. The only reason why it gets any star at all is because Amazon won't allow us to give zero stars. I suppose she gets a star for good spelling.

A terrific read. Lilly has compiled a detailed list of tips and tricks that would be helpful to anyone in the communication game. Experienced speakers will certainly find something in this book for them. I know i did, all that is left to do now is to public speak my way to wealth.
Great for Brainstorming Profitable Ideas.......2003-12-24
Lilly Walters has assembled a collection of terrific ways to create new income streams, get more bookings, generate publicity and more. The book is a series of short tips and ideas that got my brain popping. A quick perusal left my copy dotted with sticky notes marking pages containing ideas I can use now and in the future. I am currently working through the book, a section at a time, putting the tips into action.
Although absolute beginners may want more detail for some tips, wherever you are in your speaking career you will certainly find some gems to help you become a better, more successful (and profitable!) speaker. Beginners looking for more information should also read "Speak and Grow Rich" and other excellent books on building a speaking career.

This is probably the best book I have come across on tarantulas and scorpions. It is easy to read and understand, with lots of information that is useful for both beginners and experienced hands alike. Philippe De Vosjoli has a knack for making his book interesting with his style of writing. This book is definitely worth its price!

This book is a must have for any baby boomer, or for that matter anyone who wants to relive the fabulous golden era of slot racing.Philippe de Lespinay is the premiere authority on vintage slot cars and proves it with this beautiful collection of well photographed and rare items.What is even more interesting is the collection of cars pictured here with the original art work packaging!This is usually the first thing to be thrown away and as such,rarer than most of the cars. I went nuts just looking at the beautiful photos of Cox, Russkit, Classic,BZ, AMT, Revell, Model Products Corp. and many other lesser known companies like Internatonal and Industro-Motive.There is even a section on brands and types of motors.While the book is 96 pages of great slot car memories, it still wasn't enough for me. I can't wait until his next book comes out!
No HOs In Any Area Code.......2006-01-10
Philippe has not written the slot car version of the Gutenberg Bible I'll grant you, and you won't need a fork lift to unload the book when it arrives, as it's simply not as weighty a tome as apparently one or two reviewers would have liked. Me, I loved this compendium of the slot car phenomenon -- focused on the manufacturing luminaries of the craze in the 1960s heyday, many of whom were from Los Angeles. Several years ago I made a point to visit the buildings that once housed the various manufacturers in the Los Angeles basin just for fun... It was amusing to walk into these places and ask if I could root around the attic cos it used to be a place that made slot cars -- the answer was always no...and "by the way what the hell is a slot car?"
I once met Philippe at his place of business where he helped me determine that a car I had purchased online was in fact a poorly renditioned recreation, allowing me to subsequently get my money back from the Ebay seller. I found him self effacing, eager to discuss the hobby, massively knowledgeable and... the reason I would later purchase this book.
Vintage Slot Cars earns it's place proudly on the shelf of the slot car aficionado in my opinion. It sits beside my Robert Schleicher and Roger Gillham books and on par as far as I am concerned.
Commercial slot car tracks and most of the hobby died a coronary very rapidly ~ I wasn't there, since like De lespinay I was an immigrant to America (82)from England. I have to wonder was this wonderful pastime partially stomped into the ground by self appointed slot car credential police determined to make the scene as exclusively constipated and anti social as possible? There's a fairly vibrant 1/32 scene now, and in many ways it is a return to the roots of the hobby that De Lespinay's book touches upon. The evolution of the hobby may mean an eventual revival of the commercial track concept (I live mere blocks away from one of the original survivors in Buena Park)...and who knows... perhaps this time when we do it, it will be minus the self righteous posturing.
For the vintage reader.......2002-04-17
You probably had to have been there to have enjoyed this trip back to my junior and senior high school days.
As I read the book my mind flashed back to the slot car magazines I read at the time. There is much historical information I didn't know or had long since forgotten. I didn't and still don't remember the author as such a major player in the industry. Constantly he interjects himself into the book, to the overall detriment of the subject.
Having chapters for each manufacturer was one of the strong points of the book. Looking for models I owned, raced, or dreamed of owning and racing was one of the highlights of the book.
If you were a slot car racer in the 60's or a collector today this book is a worthwhile quick read. Otherwise there's nothing here for you.
On the other hand, if like me, you have the magazines from that era stashed away in the attic somewhere and you want to enter the hobby of collecting now; your best investment of time would probably be routing through the attic.
Self-aggrandizing fluff.......2001-09-29
Chock-full of DeLespinay's "small fish in a small pond" ego and little else, this book is a waste of time and money. While he'd like everyone to *think* he was "Present at the Creation," DeLespinay was a mid-70's emigrant from France, and thus a VERY latecomer to the US slot scene. Even THAT dying scene isn't remotely well-covered here -- there's NO technical content, NO valuation guides (you *could* go to DeLespinay's ludicrous website and automatically divide his prices by 5, I guess..); in fact, unless you enjoy nonsensical, name-dropping anecdotes about how Phi-Phi invented everything from fire to the Gurney flap (no kidding), and minimalist murky photos of such asinine slot-flops as the Asp and similar Thingies, simply give this steaming pile a wide miss. Instead, for REAL information from a guy who really WAS present at the creation, get the new Robert Schliecher book "Racing and Collecting Slot Cars" and any of his older books if you can find them.
Found the book to be dissappointing.......2001-06-23
Vintage slot cars, was not what I had expected at all. Maybe thats why I chose a single star rating. The book covers primarily large scale (1/24, 1/25 and 1/32)slot car racing. Very little is mentioned about the H.O. slot cars that dominated the slot car industry during the sixty's and seventy's. This was not apparent from the review I read at the local library while researching for H.O. Scale slot car books. Consequently after mail ordering the book, I was extremly dissapointed that the book barely acknowledged the H.O. scale slot cars. What photography the book has is very good, but I honestly expect a book of this size and type to have considerably more pictures than was present. The text, while interesting, is almost entirely devoted to regurgitating the same info about manufacturer after manufacturer without really outlining concisely the offering each manufacturer produced. The title should have been "Large scale" Vintage Slot Cars, at least I would not have thought the book to be something it was not. But I was still disappointed in the text and number of pictures.

This is a good introductory, all-around book about perennials for beginning gardeners and gardeners who do not expect to get deeply involved and technical in their gardening. It gives a good overview of what's available, where it will grow, and concentrates on "proven winners". Lots of pictures, too, always helpful when deciding what you want to plant.

The previous customer review stated this was a comprehensive book on perennials. I just bought this book and tried to find out more information about perennials offered on catalogs without success. This book is good but not an all inclusive reference book on perennials.

I aggree with the other reader when he says that this is indeed a very useful book and one that I consult regularly when looking for quick answers to some of my questions. I personally like the color-matching guide, which helps you select what to plant based on the color of the flowers and on the plant's height. However, I think this book lacks some information on which annuals to plant close to your perennials (very few gardens that I know of contain only perennials). I also dislike the fact that the section on different species is organized by their scientific names rather than list them by their common names, which makes me constantly have to go to the index to find where the entry for a specific plant is. How many people know the Latin name for common species such as Shasta Daisies, Black-eyed Susans and Day Lillies???

I have found all of the Ortho series of gardening books to be very useful. In a relatively condensed fashion, the book on perennials communicates a wealth of information. I own several longer, hardbound books about perennial gardening, but find myself consistently consulting my Ortho guide when I need a quick answer to a question.
The catalog of plants included in the book is very comprehensive, and unlike some other books I've used, includes information about ornamental grasses.

Mrs. Scott-Payne has an amazing grasp of story telling and so intelligently weaves her history using a thoroughly poetic voice. Her descriptions of the hills she grew up in, the hard work on the farm and her mothers relentless problem-solving and faith are really quite wonderful and heartfelt. A great American document and an even greater human story. Bravo!

Memoir the way a memoir should be.......2003-01-06
I think that memoirs are the most honest form of writing. This book is an excellent memoir. So many published memoirs are written by the famous or those that think that they are especially important. There is nothing wrong with this if such authors are actually good writers. This person is an accomplished teacher, though I gather not a "famous" teacher, who is also an excellent writer. She has a fine story to tell about perserving, and acknowleding that such perservance comes from the strength one gathers from others; in this case from the wisdom and strength of the author's mother. This book isn't going to sell like a memoir by Alice Walker, but we are talking about the same kind of rare territory. I like to find good books. This book is a find.
