Book Description

Recorded history is a finely-woven magic fabric of intricate lies about events predating the sixteenth century. There is not a single piece of evidence that can be reliably and independently traced back earlier than the eleventh century. This book details events that are substantiated by hard facts and logic, and validated by new astronomical research and statistical analysis of ancient sources.

Yes, we can all agree that mainstream history is nearly 100% BS due to politics, economics, ego, problems with dating techniques, and various conspiracies. Agreed. But, I've been researching the distinct possibility that human history (in terms of civilizations) are much more ancient than we've been told, so coming across this book was very interesting to me. I wondered how Fomenko could be wrong (if at all) because he is very persuasive in his presentations. Then it dawned on me. If at previous times in prehistory, due to the various catastrophies that are well documented (comets, asteroids, planetary disruptions, plasma discharge, pole reversals, etc) the Earth was in a different position in relation to the sun, different tilt on its axis, different orbit, different rotation (in terms of velocity and DIRECTION), and the continents were in different positions, then would this not cause the ancients to see the sky (constellations) differently? In other words, is Fomenko making erronious assumptions about the physics of the Earth in pre-history, which then corrupt his data with regards to dating the relevant astrology? The last event to seriously disrupt our planet occured roughly 3500 years ago, according to other good researchers, so is it possible Fomenko has been confused by this? The vastly different physics of our planet in the not so distant past may explain this confusion, which is not to say the "mainstream" version of history is correct; on the contrary. I am not an expert in these fields, but wanted to see if this idea could spark discussion.

5 out of 5 stars Pants on fire?.......2007-07-19

Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is completely eurocentric. Right, his theory contradicts all mainstream schools of history, because in their actual state they are all built on blatantly erroneus chronology. You don't need a mysterious cabal (conspiracy) to falsify history, the falsification is its modus operandi. It is inherent to history(ians) to falsify (distort) events, as it is inherent to humans to boast as it is inherent to power (authority) to legimize itself by referrring to glorious past made to its own order. Dr Prof Fomenko and team have identified scores of instances of such manipulation in Russian, European, etc.. history, and delivered valid statistical proof thereof. His own 'reconstruction' is completely another story. Forget c14 as a valid method of dating. W.Libby has initially discovered a brilliant method of INDEPENDENT dating. Too bad, c14 method has become a joke after a forced marrige with dendrochronology with consensual chronological scale inbuilt. Radiocarbon method can't stand blind tests, but is so very productive as a rubberstamp.

5 out of 5 stars Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09

There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.

For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.

It is a good proposal and I believe it will mature into something even better in the future. I think it deserves to be read.

4 out of 5 stars History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10

Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.

I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.

Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.

Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.

I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.

This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.

5 out of 5 stars Superb and comprehensive work........2006-02-24

This title has long been out of print, but it is well worth hunting down and adding to one's collection. Despite the 1974 publishing date, Scullard's writing style is not outdated, and the level of illustration is sufficient. This book is a model for how an author should go about thoroughly reviewing a specialized component of historical warfare. It presents a complete, cohesive, authoritative, and balanced picture of the subject.

Scullard's interpretations are clearly presented, but he also provides balanced analysis of other possibilities and competing theories. He also does a commendable job of attempting elephant "accounting" in the historical sources, by keeping track of elephant forces changing hands from one ruler/army to others. This lends strength to his interpretations and assumptions.

The elephant in warfare is peculiarly striking since it is both so formidable and unpredictable. Elephants were powerful weapons in their day, at times striking terror into men and horses and thereby securing victory. On other occasions elephants were easily countered and sent amok back into their own forces, resulting in catastrophic disarray for their own army. The mercurial nature of elephant warfare, their declining population in North Africa, expensive upkeep, and improved countermeasures lead to the elephant's demise as a weapon of war. All these aspects are discussed in this fine book.

This work is for those whose imaginations are captured by the battles of Hannibal, Phyrrhus, and Alexander that involved elephants, and those who want a full understanding of elephants as weapons of war. Scullard does a fine job of reviewing elephant usage of the period from Porus vs. Alexander all the way to Sassanid Persia. Within the covers one will find descriptions of elephant use by Carthage, Numidia, Ptolemaic Egypt, the Seleucids, Sassanids, Rome (via allies), and more.

The author has included numerous archaeological examples of plates, figures, and stele depicting elephants with riders and/or towers. In addition there are photographs of many coins of different eras that featured elephants. These are discussed at length in the text. The text does a fine job of reviewing literary evidence, the archaeological discoveries, and more modern knowledge of elephants to paint a plausible picture of their use in war.

Although I had a fair grasp of elephant warfare before obtaining this book, I learned some surprising things. Chief among these is that towers/turrets were apparently used on forest elephants at times. While such use is mentioned several times by primary sources and I knew of such references, other modern authors have suggested it was not possible. Scullard accepts that it was possible, and was in fact necessary in the case of the Ptolomies facing turreted Indian elephants. If there is one thing that could be added to this work to improve upon it, it would be some modern artistic depictions of elephants in battle.

Book Description

An anthology of some of the best writing about the up-and-down history of the Philadelphia Phillies, this updated paperback edition features several new essays—including one about Citizens Bank Park—and the team's recent history. The stories herein provide fans with some of the best sportswriting about the woes and triumphs of Phillies baseball.

The Phillies Reader features essays on the athletic achievements of such legendary players as Chuck Klein, Richie Ashburn, Dick Allen, and Mike Schmidt; the political turmoil surrounding the "ok" from manager Ben Chapman to "ride" Jackie Robinson about the color of his skin; the bizarre shooting of Eddie Waitkus; the heroics of the Whiz Kids; the heartbreak of '64; and the occasional triumphs and frequent travails of controversial managers Gene Mauch, Frank Lucchesi, and Danny Ozark. It asks why fans boo great players such as Del Ennis, but forgave Pat Burrell for his horrendous 2003 slump.

Featuring essays by Red Smith, Pete Dexter, Roger Angell, and James Michener, among others, The Phillies Reader presents a compendium of Phillies literature that reveals what it is that makes legends.

5 out of 5 stars The Ultimate For All Phillies Fans.......2001-06-09

Yes, I am one of the few, the proud,.....the Philadelphia Phillies' fans. And was this book ever perfect for me.

I have always been a baseball fan, and my favorite team has always been the Philadelphia Phillies. This book allowed me to travel back through the wild history of the ball club. The stories are wonderful, but more importantly, most of them are written by top-notch newspaper reporters or well-known authors. Some of the more personal stories, written by players, etc., are also well-done, and give a nice human touch to the book.

This was an intersting and entertaining read, and one that could be enjoyed by all fans of America's Pastime.

5 out of 5 stars This is one for the ultimate Phillies fanatic!.......1999-11-29

Some books I read for the history, some I read for the story, and then there is The Phillies Reader. Being a life long Philadelphia Phillies fan, this book allowed me to read about some of my boyhood heroes and bring out the kid in me once again.

Follow the 300-page trail of one of baseball's oldest and most storied franchises in this remarkable collection of Phillies archives. From the earliest days of Ed Delahanty and his four home run game to Billy Hamilton to the roaring 20's with Pete Alexander.

Travel back in time to watch the Whiz Kids like Robin Roberts and Ritchie Ashburn of the 50's to the Mike Schmidt and Steve Carlton lead powerhouses of the 70's and 80's. You'll read about the Wheeze Kids with Pete Rose, Joe Morgan and Tony Perez of 1983.

I was amazed at the ups and downs, the trial and tribulations, the emotional roller coaster this book presented and how it all falls neatly into place. A true must have for any Phillies Fan at a price that should be of no objection. Congratulations on a spectacular job well done!

5 out of 5 stars Great for any Phillies fan; could have been even better.......1998-06-07

This is a wonderful and educational chronological collection of newspaper columns written about the Phillies from the 1930's through the 1993 World Series. There is a pleasing array of writing styles, perspectives and events chronicled. I wish the book were bigger, though. For instance, I hoped for more detail about the infamous 1964 "stretch drive." I was born in 1958 and first started rooting for the Fightins in 1970. 1964 is not in my personal memory bank, thank goodness. But, even in the absence of material I had hoped to see, this book is very entertaining reading, and a must for any Phillie fan - or baseball fan - who appreciates the history of the Phils or the game itself.

Most of the book is dictionary style, with French words alphabetized. The entry tells if the word is masculine or feminine and if it's plural. A very brief definition is given, and then the word is used in a French sentence followed by an English translation.

Example: échanger; to exchange; J'aimerais échanger cette robe que j'ai achetée hier. I would like to exchange this dress that I bought yesterday.

Also included is a category section, which lists la famille (the family), les jours de la semaine (days of the week), les mois de la'année (months of the year), les saisons (sesaons), les nombres (numbers), les couleurs (colors), la nourriture (food), les magasins (stores), les occupations (occupations), and les animaux (animals).

At the back is one vocabulary page to help with endings of words, to show some words that are the same both in English and French, and to help with a few other grammatical tips.

This really isn't for someone who doesn't know any French at all, as it could be difficult to follow. It isn't a phrasebook for visitors to France, as a lot of basics that tourists need to know are not included. However, if you have been studying French or need to just brush up on your vocabulary, this inexpensive little book is a smart choice.

5 out of 5 stars A highly recommended collection of useful French words.......2002-05-06

1001 Most Useful French Words is a slim and highly recommended collection of useful French words will delight students of French and those seeking a stronger, more in-depth vocabulary. Over 1,000 frequently-used French words and phrases are included, with a separate section featuring common words arranged by category. The perfect language primer.

Book Description

From the author of Black Images In the Comics comes this survey of Satan's many cartoon guises. The Devil is one of the most potent and longest-lived icons in the history of human civilization. It is therefore not a big surprise that images of the Prince of Darkness are so abundant in comics—a medium that by its nature builds upon the communicative powers of icons. In this book the author examines how cartoonists through the ages have used the myths about the Devil, in a wide variety of ways.

The book is divided into several thematic chapters, including "Ancient Devils"—about medieval artists rendering the Devil in sequential picture stories; "Religious Devils"—concerning the Devil in Christian comics; "Super Devils"—the Devil in superhero comics; "Funny Devils"—all the humorous ways the image of the Devil can be used; and more.

Comics featured in this book include, among others: the infamous Jack T. Chick tracts, Hellblazer, Love & Rockets, The Checkered Demon, Donald Duck, Mephisto, Dilbert, The New Adventures of Jesus, Stray Toasters, The Demon, Futurama, Preacher, Hot Stuff—The Little Devil, Castle Waiting, Sandman, The Book of Leviathan, Swamp Thing, Dragon Ball, Spawn, Silver Surfer, Picture Stories from the Bible, Uncanny X-Men, Tintin, Sshhhh! and Lady Death.

Like Strömberg's previous book from Fantagraphics, Black Images in the Comics, The Comics Go To Hell is designed for maximum browsability, with each spread featuring a short (but informative!) essay on a comic next to a representative panel of the work at hand.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Hell Needs to be Bigger.......2006-03-16

The book was excellent as far as it went, and the writer seems to know his material very well. The main improvement that could be made would be to increase the number of examples of the artwork, perhaps in an enlarged format, and include examples of the use of the Devil in political cartoons.

2 out of 5 stars disappointing collection.......2005-08-01

The book contains a large number of black and white reproductions of various demon and devil imagery in comics. One sample per random artist, generally. The images, many poorly reproduced, low contrast, and small, appear on one page faced by a paragraph or two of commentary.

I found the images to be largely uninteresting. Banal. And the commentary flat and superficial.

4 out of 5 stars Good book, bad editing.......2005-03-17

This is a really interesting subject, and the book is fairly well written; however it's very sloppily edited and could have used the services of a proofreader! Perhaps the author is a non-native English speaker and the clunky sentences are a bad translation? Anyway, it's a bit frustrating as there is a lot of information in this book and it does seem to be well researched. I'd definitely recommend the book, especially if you don't tend to notice typos.

About a hundred scottish clan tartans are shown . Unfortunately the author doesn't seem aware of the fact that all
these patterns belong to --are the personnal property-- of scottish clan chiefs . If you want to find out the missing names you should buy from the same publisher a wonderful set of three books called "TARTANS" written by Johnston and Philips and published by SCHIFFER DESIGN BOOKS .

5 out of 5 stars For hot, dry and high pH soils (Texas Hill Country).......2001-12-17

Dry limestone based soils such as the Edwards Plateau area of Texas and other places in the southwest, provide a major challenge to gardening which is addessed in this book. In such areas many plants simply will not grow well. Trying to get them to do so is an exercise in frustration and general garden books can lead you far astray. This book is not about how to try to change your soil, high pH soils cannot be effectively acidified. The book is about plants, trees, shrubs and varieties that do well in dry calcarious soil conditions. It will save you a lot of time, money and frustration if you face these conditions. A great book, a gold mine of information.

5 out of 5 stars this is an invaluable book for Central Texas gardeners.......1999-03-14

This is the most practical, useful, and enjoyable book on gardening that someone in the Texas Hill Country could ever want! It's not as big or comprehensive as the Wasowskis' "Native Texas Plants: Landscaping Region by Region", but that's because it focuses on the challenges of gardening in these "difficult" (nice word!) soils that we live with. Ogden's observations and advice about dealing with our limestone and caliche, and his reality-based recommendations of plants to use and the ones to avoid, gave me hope, encouragement, and new ideas for making this corner of the world a more beautiful place! It's got some great color photos, too.

    Book Description

This collection represents the first large scale attempt to discuss the Middle Eastern mandates as a totality. It compares the application and effects of this very specific form of late colonialism from a variety of different disciplinary perspectives, including anthropology, architecture, archival conservation, economics, history, law and sociology. It contains analyses at both micro and macro levels, including specific instances of revolt or collaboration, studies of particular individuals, of professional groups and their contributions to "nation-building," comparisons between the various political and cultural policies of the mandatory powers, and the formation and practice of "le savoir colonial" by contemporary ethnographers, officials, physicians and teachers. The volume will be of interest to historians of imperialism and of the twentieth century Middle East.
