The fastest and easiest way to try your hand at fly fishing
Getting Started in Fly Fishing is dedicated to the simple but neglected truth that the best learning happens while doing. With leisure time more precious and limited than ever, author Tom Fuller gets readers started with only the information that's absolutely necessary for that first day on the stream. In a few quick strokes, Fuller introduces the contents of a pared-down start-up kit and identifies heavily promoted items of gear that are definitely not needed. With succinct, easy-to-follow instructions, he shows readers how to:
- Start fishing after just an hour with this book
- Make their first cast to a rising trout
- Play and land their first fish
- Fish with dry flies, wet flies, nymphs, and streamers
- Cast to all kinds of fish in all waters, fresh and salt

Drab lay-outs, but good basic info.......2006-07-29
I'm creating a Heritage album (a long and loving process) and bought several books and mags including this one. BKB provides much sound info re: researching familyinfo and buying basic supplies, but her lay-outs are soooooo boring and depressing - just uninspired! Neither do I like the oddly popular "10,000 themes" lay-outs!! -- too many embellishments and the photo and story get lost, but BKB's examples would never make you want to review her album a second time. She also doesn't deal w/the challenges posed by being a 1st or 2nd generation American and not being able to easily access foregin family records, and how to lay-out pages when you don't have photos (note - do more creative journaling).
Instead I would recommend special issues of Memory Makers (e.g., Sept 2003 "Heritage scrapbook ideas," Memory Makers "Creating Heritage Scrapbooks," and some issues (read before you buy!) of Legacy magazine.
For Genealogists, Scrapbookers & Family Historians.......2005-04-21
Most of us have those stashs of old report cards, faded photos, locks of hair tied with a ribbon, and yellowing marriage certificates from other generations. This book gives ideas for pulling those items together in a meaningful album.
The author covers the needed supplies (choice of album, papers, decorative touches) and the pros and cons of each. Journaling is explained and the ways to present your information, documenting the sources and show off your family heritage.
It's a lovely book to get you started or to give to your family genealogist. They will be thrilled with the ideas for preserving and presenting your family memorabilia along with this history.
At the back are helpful forms for a family tree and to track your research. There you also find 3 pages of genealogy resources, 3 pages of scrapbooking resources, a list of websites, and a glossary to help with unfamiliar terms.
Great for those interested in genealogy and scrapbooking........2005-02-15
As someone who does both genealogy and scrapbooking this book is full of ideas. The ideas given in this book are both simple but yet elegant at times, something that I like.
I would highly recommend this book to anyone who is into genealogy and wishes to preserve and show off their family photos, stories and heritage.
A complete heritage album resource........2003-10-17
There are already two very good reviews of this book here at Amazon, but I wanted to stress to potential buyers that this is a COMPLETE heritage album resource. This is NOT the kind of book you usually find on this topic -- not only just a book of layouts.
If you've been debating about starting scrapbooking as a hobby and are looking at taking it up to document all your old attic finds, this is the book you want to read. The author begins with a straight-forward introduction to scrapbooking, and shows you the plusses and minuses of various techniques.
If you've toyed with the idea of starting to document your family history past what you already know, this is also a good beginner's resource. She goes on to explain the basics of genealogy and provides several helpful and necessary blank forms for starting your family search.
Not to forget that the meat of this book is devoted to creating your own family history album, and all the special considerations this particular kind of scrapbooking raises. Just what to do with all those antique photos, certificates and clippings, anyway?
This is a very detailed look at the heritage themed scrapbook; plenty of illustrated examples, a friendly DIY read, and I know it helped me figure out just what I wanted to do with all my own family treasures!
Disappointment.......2001-01-22
I was disappointed by this book. I had hoped to find ideas for page layouts and designs, but instead found only repetitive, unimaginative pages. While it did what it said it would do in terms of covering the basics of heritage scrapbooking, it also perpetuated the misconception that heritage pages are boring.
Book Description
Comics aren't just for kids, and illustrations don't merely transpose text into image. Picture stories can do more than just tell a simple, illiterate narrative, and design, well, design infiltrates the visual aspects of nearly everything that surrounds us. If these statements seems like truisms, they are, but they were hardly obvious conclusions just a few years ago, before the arts once considered merely commercial exploded into the mainstream. Unlike any other publication, the Ganzfeld gathers together a diverse sampling of recent design, illustration, and comics, together with essays that place them in a historical and critical context. Better still, this volume includes the first publication of comics genius Chris Ware's color sketchbooks; endpapers designed by nest editor Joseph Holtzman, covers by the Beastie Boys and GAP designer Mike Mills; an illustrated story by Maira Kalman; wallpaper designs by a cartoonist, a fine artist, an illustrator, and a designer; visual reportage on the Venice Biennale by Paul Davis; and far too much more to mention here.

Anecdotes and pop psych for beginners.......2003-08-14
This book was a very quick read and somewhat entertaining, but not at all what I had expected or hoped for, especially considering its high secondhand price. The author's information is very basic and she really only gives a general overview of some of the most common traits that pet parrots may exhibit. Some of her suggestions and theories are quite dubious in my opinion. The information the book contains is very anecdotal, and for anyone who has a deep interest in or much knowledge about parrots, or anyone trying to address specific behavioral issues it is very inadequate. I would class it as a decent book for someone who is thinking about getting a parrot or parrot-type bird for the first time and is researching whether or not a bird is the right type of pet for them, but the title is certainly misleading. The book contains some common sense information but nothing new or cutting-edge in bird behavior, and certainly nothing that would indicate that it was written by a "bird shrink". I was very disappointed.
Learn why your bird is such a freak!.......2000-12-01
Birds on the Couch is a cute little book which I enjoyed even though I do not own birds. Ruth Hanessian, who runs a bird store and teaches quarterly "parrot psychology" classes, uses this book to reinforce in the bird owner's mind that bird behavior almost always has some cause to be found in its environment.
For the Polly owner, the endless stream of anecdotes will help calm fears that their bird is insane. For those who don't own birds but enjoy animals it will be nice to see just how complex their moods can be.
Humorous and informational!.......2000-02-15
This wonderful book was humorous and helped me think of ingenious ways to train my bird not have them train me. Ruth (the author)is wonderful! She knows birds and helps others with getting old (PAL in resting homes), parting of their little ones, having fun with your bird, and other stories of what she has seen first hand! It is a wonderful book to see if you would like a bird-because as the book explains birds are unpredictable.
I actually wrote this review after I read the review from a person in Indiana. I couldn't believe it! This book was not about her store it was about people that came to her store with REAL stories and she suggested ideas not concrete solutions because each bird is different and you have to try different things on different birds. The comment about her telling her customers to NOT to go to the vet is not true..it says in the book that they came to her for help, but if the bird was sick or needed help to definitely take it to a vet. People just trust her and asked her opinion first. It was a wonderful book about new birds, older birds, fun with your bird, and just fun to read. It doesn't help you with everything you will encounter with your bird, but it will sure help you through the hard times with humor and dedication! I just met Ruth this weekend at her little store and she does know her birds! She is very passionate about what she does! You will enjoy this book - even if you do not have a bird.
More than entertaining, very informative and well written........1999-08-23
I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. The author writes with humor AND knowledge from years of experienced bird ownership. I would highly recommend this book to any parrot lover.
excellent.......1999-04-25
I had pretty much given up on Henry until I stumbled upon "BOTC". Thank God Ruth and Wendy were there for me. I found their advice to be invaluable - thank you! Henry thanks you, too.
Customer Reviews:
Beware - this book could be habit-forming!.......2000-03-25
Arrested by the photos on its cover, I picked up Sharon Weintraub's NAUGHTIES, NUDIES, AND BATHING BEAUTIES and bought it on impulse. I opened it, and almost instantly came down with collector's fever. The author's enthusiasm is contagious, and her personal collection breathtaking. The narrative on the history and manufacture of the mostly German, mostly bisque figurines is expert and easy to follow (infectious, you might even say). But familiarity breeds covetousness when it comes to this book, so beware!
Ironically, the "nudies" and "bathing beauties," originally novelties and souvenirs bought to shock and titillate, are probably most attractive today to women, especially those with feminist bents. This is because we see them now as depicting the wonderful time when women were tossing out their corsets and wearing comfortable clothing, when we got to feel the sand in our toes,to cavort like Isadora Duncan in the sunshine. The book begins with a fascinating, lavishly illustrated chapter about that period in our history.
With the caveat that you will want to spend your kid's college tuition on what you previously might have thought of as knick-knacks...buy this book.
Book Description
Beautiful Madness will do for competitive gardening what Word Freak did for competitive Scrabble, and what Best in Show did for competitive dog breeding. It's Susan Orlean's The Orchid Thief with a sense of humor. You'll never look at a potted plant the same way again.
During an amazing year of living botanically, James Dodson went behind the scenes of the world's two most important garden shows (the Philadelphia Flower Show and the Chelsea Garden Show in New York City); spent time with the Botticelli of Bulbs; attended a rare plant auction of high rollers; sneaked into a Hosta convention; communed with the kindred spirits of Thomas Jefferson and John Bartram; met a man smuggling exotic day lilies; learned the inside poop on ten or twelve of the Western world's most influential gardens; swiped cuttings from a Founding Father's shrubbery; hung out with ten or twelve of the most accomplished gardening fanatics on earth; built three new gardens of his own; and wound up hanging perilously from a limb on the side of a cliff in Southern Africa, the birthplace of an estimated one-third of the world's flowers, where he capped off his year of incalculable learning and discovery by tagging along with four of America's leading plant hunters on an expedition into the rugged jungles to find the exotic new species of tomorrow.
This yeoman's tale of shared horticultural obsession burrows deeply into the story of how Americans became such fanatical gardeners and are today, in fact, at the forefront of what everyone agrees is a new Golden Age of Gardening, an unprecedented growth in gardening's popularity that hasaccording to a recent Gallop pollan astonishing eighty percent of adult Americans claiming to be primary hobby gardeners.

To Know the Soul of Those Who Garden - Read On!!.......2006-07-01
James Dodson has an amazing ability to make any aspect of his life that he cares to share with us interesting, readable and enjoyable. I have read all of his books. He has collaborated with Arnold Palmer on his autobiography.
He has written eloquently about his relationship with his father in a moving book entitled Final Rounds. He has written several books that talk about his relationshiip with his children and family. He has written about The Dewsweepers, a group of men who share a love of golf and true friendship. His personal books are about relationships, spiritualty and life and they are all very moving and very entertaining.
He has written what I consider the definitive biography of Ben Hogan which was a total departure from his previous efforts. A real tour de force.
In this book, golfers and golfing are hardly mentioned. This book is about gardeners and gardening. Is it ever.
A transplanted son of the "mid-south", Dobson and his family live now in Maine. A place where gardening does not come easy. Much of one's time, if they live in Maine and garden is planning for those few months where the climate is hospitable to plant life. The rest of the time, Mother Nature does her best to make life miserable for growing things and the people who care for them.
I did not buy this book. My wife did. However, before she was ready to read it, I spotted it, noted the name of the author, wondered if there were two James Dodson's, determined that the one I was familiar with was one and the same with this author and started to read.
It is perfectly logical that my wife would buy the book. She is a gardener, both flower and vegetable. She has lovely gardens and I enjoy admiring them, photographing them and keeping the lawns that surround them looking neat and trimmed. However, as I told her many years ago, "I don't weed." So, for me to start reading a book about the subject was unlikely. And I can assure you that if Dodson was not the author I would not have.
I was not long into the book before he had me hooked as he laid out his passion for gardening and related it to so many aspects of the gardening world and it's people. He even reintroduced me to an old friend I have not seen in a very long time - a lady by the name of Polly Logan. What a special treat THAT was.
As I closed the covers on the book, I was not invigorated to start turing over the earth and setting out a garden of my own. I did have a new appreciation of those who do and I enjoyed the travels that Dodson took the reader on to many of the pantheons of gardening around the world.
It truly is a beautiful madness and we are all enriched because of it.
A Treat for Gardeners.......2006-03-18
From the knowledgeable plant growers to the every day gardeners, the encounters Dodson writes about are most interesting and informative. I especially enjoyed the behind the scenes of the Philadelphia Flower Show and his return visit there the next year. His expedition to Africa opened my eyes to the flowers growing there, the trees, animals and customs of the county. A must read for all who enjoy gardening where ever you live. I did not want it to end.

Understanding the tension in Saoudi Arabia.......2002-02-03
This book offers a unique glimpse into the two forces that are trying to dominate Saoudi-Arabian society: the islamic legal scholars (ulama) and the royal Saud family. At the moment the ulama seem to be winning this battle, which leads to the implementation of strict islamic Hanbali law in almost all spheres of everyday life. The striving of the king to implement more westernized laws is largely ignored by the ulama and the islamic judges. All this makes the Saoudi-arabian islamic system of law an ideal subject for studying and understanding Islam. The book is fairly easy reading, although I would say that some preliminary knowledge about Islam is required.
