5 out of 5 stars Good book about the waterways of Puget Sound........2003-03-04

Lots of good trips, lots of tips about timing your trip with the tides for a more enjoyable and safe trip. Good list of saftey tips. No book is a subsitute for experience but with this on you are less likely to get into trouble. The Puget Sound region has a lot of good open water kayaking and this book covers a lot of that ground.

Product Description

As a mountain range, the Sutter Buttes of California stands apart, an island of upland in the great sea of lowland flanked by the Sierra Nevada and the Coast Ranges. Its softly rounded hills and angular pinnacles are cloaked in grasses, shrubs, and trees in patterns that reflect nature's design, not man's. Naturalist Walt Anderson provides an insiders view of this special mountain, telling stories with both insight and humor. The rocks, plants, animals, and the ecosystems they collectively form are given personal faces through Walts insights and unabashed humor. Humans are also a part of the natural history of this place, and their roles, from prehistoric to modern, are discussed.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars So Much More than a book on the Sutter Buttes.......2005-06-04

As a Professional Biologist I approached Walt Anderson's book with a critical eye to accuracy and detail. As a natural history student I approached his book with a curiosity about the Sutter Buttes, a place I have not yet visited (but now plan to).

In both instances I was thoroughly satisfied and excited by what I found. Clearly, Walt Anderson is a gifted writer and teacher. His subtle use of wit makes the reading most enjoyable. I felt as though the author and I might be standing on a hillside in the Buttes while he offered his observations, filtered through is obvious joy of knowing this special place.

His ability to introduce the natural history novice to advanced concepts and terms, while maintaining a sophistacted and scholarly treatment of the subject that will satisfy even the most critical naturalist, reflects his talent as a writer and teacher. In fact, I am now using his book as a resource for a book I am presently working on about another special place. Thanks Walt for the deep research and reporting.

Sure, this book is filled with fascinating facts about the Sutter Buttes, from its geological formation through minutia about the life histories of wild residents of the Buttes, but the book is much more than a dry treatise on the natural history of the Sutter Buttes. Rather, it is a journey through this special place in the natural world with a most talented guide. Don't miss this most complete and enjoyable tour from the perspective of one who truly knows this place.

5 out of 5 stars One beautifully written natural history book.......2005-05-10

Jean Campbell's review of "Inland Island: The Sutter Buttes" is right on. This is an incredibly beautiful natural history book, both in its design and its text, and the drawings and color photographs are also marvelous!

Even the forwards (by David Cavagnaro and Craig Childs) are wonderful and informative.

I think this book will become the most-read natural history of The Buttes, but it is also in large part a natural history of much of northern California. I recommend it highly to all naturalists and environmentalists....it's a gem....

5 out of 5 stars A Natural History with Passion.......2005-01-19

Inland Island: The Sutter Buttes is one of the best natural histories that I have seen for going beyond mere descriptions of parts (flora, fauna, and geography) and imparting a true sense of place. Without question, a sense of place requires a detailed description of all the parts for these are its building blocks. Walt Anderson catalogues these parts for the Sutter Buttes as well as can be found in any number of monographs of local natural histories. However, the parts are just the parts and its not until we become aware of their interactions through stories of living actions that a sense of how everything comes together to give a place its character begins to emerge. Here, Walt Anderson excels in giving us several stories such as Red Tail Hawks catching ground squirrels and Turkey Vultures pelting him with excrement as he lectures to a class. He does this with tongue-in-cheek humor and with the warm sentiment that conveys a deep and abiding passion for the whole of the place as well as for all its parts. I believe that a sense of place is primal in finding the deep satisfaction that can come from connecting with the natural world. Walt Anderson does this for us with uncommonly good writing and an obvious passion. His passion sets this book apart from others.

    Book Description

To live on an island is to live a life apart. Author Linda Leigh Paul’s Island Living captures the most charming island homes, including homes on the East Coast’s Barrier Islands, the Northwest’s San Juan and Gulf Islands, the Pacific’s Hawaiian Islands, and the Great Lakes’ Apostle Islands, among other homes on privately owned or low-density islands.
The island home reflects its owner’s reason for escape, whether it’s a person who turns to island living to feel more of this world, or the person who wishes to remove himself from the mainstream. Regardless, the island homeowner is individualistic and creative, and every space in Island Living speaks of a space that is its owner’s dream come to life, be it simplicity or utter luxury.
With more than 150 images and written in the transporting and distinctive tone that Paul’s readers have come to expect, Island Living is a book of fantasy―the home that is both refuge and wish embodied.

    1 out of 5 stars a waste of time.......2007-03-11

these are not luxurious oceanfront homes. they are ALL ugly
plain homes that give no decorating ideas (maybe to my grandma)

5 out of 5 stars An architect Island Resident.......2006-04-22

Very nice layout and graphics and selection of relatively modest but well thought out homes.

5 out of 5 stars 25 Homes in Beautiful Settings.......2006-03-05

When I thought of living on an island, my first thought was the tropics. Somewhere down in the Caribbean or perhaps the South Pacific. Here houses would be open to the wind, here it would be necessary to produce your own electricity, your own water supply and so on.

Instead in this book, most of the houses are on islands just off the coast of the US. And as part of the sub-title, there are some that he considers to be Shoreside Havens rather than actually on an island. Further many of these houses are quite far north, off the coast of Maine perhaps or in the area around foggy, rainy Seattle. Here you don't want a wide open house, but one that can be warm and cozy while presenting a view of the storm tossed water.

Here are some twenty-five spectacular homes. These are not the huge mansions often seen in such books, but homes that are only slightly above the mainstream. Here are homes that are made to fit into a site and to reflect the love that the owners have for that site.

5 out of 5 stars Nature writing at its most thought-provoking best.......2000-04-02

This is my all-time favorite book. If you like "Pilgrim at Tinker's Creek," be sure to read "Inland Island" by Josephine Johnson. She has the same unromanticized view of nature's uncompromising rule (whatever survives, works), and she has the mind of an agnostic poet expressed in prose. Example: I think it is disgusting to praise God for making us acknowledge His presence by a poke in our eyeballs with His sharp stick.

And: All day, a rain of life and death goes on. A catbird crashed against the pane and fell gasping. Then it gathered itself in a narrow canoe shape and lay there patiently waiting to recover or die. Awareness is a name of agony. I wish there was something to pray to for its life. But one must not get excited. One must not grieve. Nature, Mom, all-powerful, monstrous and monolithic Mother sits and chooses.

The whole book is wonderful! I wish I could read it again for the first time just for the pleasure of its discovery.

This was a different kind of guide book in a good way. It gave a nice history of the area and gave information to not only the usual tourist places but "off the beaten track" activities that we actually did in Belize.....and had a great time. Would give this one to any friend going to the area.

                      Book Description

In the beginning there was heaven and earth; and the earth was without form and void and little tow-headed boys wandered around barefoot with hands in their pockets because there was nothing upon the land to catch their imagination. And God looked upon His work and was it was not yet good that no thing existed to challenge those boys. And so an autumn came to pass when eerie whistlings drifted into the valleys from distant mountainsides and the by-then lanky teenage boys threw away their toys and accepted the wapiti challenge that would make them men! And God and girls saw that it was good. If you've heard a different version of this story, that's your problem. I heard it but once--this way. And so I became an elk hunter. Then I became infatuated with all God's creatures, and eventually a believer that God's handiwork is composed of such intracacies that a quest to understand has taken the rest of my life. The Phantom Ghost of Harriet Lou is about that quest.

                        Book Description

This is an examination of the relationship between classification and evolutionary theory, with reference to the competing schools of taxonomic thinking. Emphasis is placed on one of these schools, the transformed cladists who have attempted to reject all evolutionary thinking in classification and to cast doubt on evolution in general. The author examines the limits to this line of thought from a philosophical and methodological perspective. He concludes that transformed cladistics does not achieve what it claims and that it either implicitly assumes a Platonic World View, or is unintelligible without taking into account evolutionary processes--the very processes it claims to reject. Through this analysis the author attempts to formulate criteria of an objective and consistent nature that can be used to judge competing methodologies and theories. Philosophers of science, zoologists interested in taxonomy, and evolutionary biologists will find this a compelling study.

                          Book Description

This second edition of Baumann's Mathematica ® for Theoretical Physics shows readers how to solve physical problems and deal with their underlying theoretical concepts while using Mathematica ® to derive numeric and symbolic solutions. Each example and calculation can be evaluated by the reader, and the reader can change the example calculations and adopt the given code to related or similar problems.

The second edition has been completely revised and expanded into two volumes: The first volume covers classical mechanics and nonlinear dynamics. Both topics are the basis of a regular mechanics course. The second volume covers electrodynamics, quantum mechanics, relativity, and fractals and fractional calculus.

New examples have been added and the representation has been reworked to provide a more interactive problem-solving presentation. This book can be used as a textbook or as a reference work, by students and researchers alike. A brief glossary of terms and functions is contained in the appendices.

The CD-ROM accompanying each of the two volumes contains Mathematica ® notebooks as well as Mathematica ® programs. The notebooks contain the entire text of the corresponding volume and can interface with Mathematica ®. The examples given in the text can also be interactively used and changed for the reader’s purposes.

The Author, Gerd Baumann, is affiliated with the Mathematical Physics Division of the University of Ulm, Germany, where he is professor. He is the author of Symmetry Analysis of Differential Equations with Mathematica ®. Dr. Baumann has given numerous invited talks at universities and industry alike. He regularly hosts seminars and lectures on symbolic computing at the University of Ulm and at Technische Universität München (TUM), Munich.

This is a very good book in it's subject. The examples taken from Quantum Mechanics ,Fractals and General Relativity are quite impressive. But I would expect even more problems taken from the field of Electrodynamics.I think that this book is a"must have" for anyone who's interesting in computational methods for solving basic problems of theoretical physics.

Right Angles and Other Obstinate Truths is a fascinating collection of commentaries on current issues, famous and infamous individuals, passing fads, Baby Boomer memories and personal experiences.

The more than 70 short essays by Michael M. Bates are provocative and may strike some as controversial. They all appeared in his regular column in the southwest suburban Chicago Reporter Newspapers.

There aren't many books that run the gamut from Adams (John) to Zorro. This one does, and includes observations on topics as disparate as the IRS, Banned Books Week, pet psychics, the Chicago Cubs, Wal-Mart and eternity.

You may find the author's views extreme, repugnant, wildly illogical, disgracefully partisan, inconsistent or narrow minded. They are never boring.

Right Angles and Other Obstinate Truths is a collection of short essays taken from the author's regular column in the Chicago Reporters Newspapers. These outspoken, opinionated commentaries are divided into seven sections containing the topics Boomers; Government; Pets and other critters; Heroes and villains; Political correctness and other nonsense; Society; and Personal. The majority of essays in this book are extremely politically charged. The stories within these topics range from personal experience that the author shares through general comments on past and present day society to the analysis of current world events. Some of the most interesting and entertaining essays included in this book are For $200 a day plus expenses, a real bargain (a reminiscence of the 1970's television program the Rockford Files); Talk to the animals for fun and (mostly) profit (an essay about pet psychics); and Santa thinks about a career change (a sarcastic version of Santa Claus' challenges in the modern world).

Readers who enjoy sparring over political and social issues or who have strong opinions on such issues will either love Right Angles and Other Obstinate Truths or love to hate this book. The author pulls no punches and doesn't hide behind political correctness or socially accepted societal norms. Furthermore, the author aims to say what he feels others are afraid to voice. In this way, readers will react strongly to this book, strongly positive if the reader agrees with the author's particular views or negatively if the reader disagrees with the author's ideas.

An author who isn't afraid to take on the left with humor as well intelligence. Personal chapters are also included one dealing with the loss of a dear friend and the senseless act of one pet being killed. As a boomer I could relate to the Jack Parr chapter as well as the Zorro one. A book with something for everyone to enjoy as well as debate.
