    Book Description

This book answers the need for a working manual of techniques in modern light microscopy. It includes an explanation of basic procedures and equipment, telling how to record images produced by illumination techniques, immunohistochemistry, histochemistry, fluorescence, microscopy, micrometry
and image analysis, combining microscope techniques in chromosome studies, and videomicroscopy. Emphasis is placed on the critical approach that must be made when interpreting results, helping researchers to make more extensive use of this technique in their work. Light Microscopy will also be
useful to those attempting to visualize and record their observations at the microscopic level for the first time.

        Book Description

Do You Think You've Seen Wisconsin? You Ain't Seen Nothin' Yet!

This book is about saying yes to the "other road" -- the road less traveled. The road that isn't necessarily the straightest or the fastest. It's about taking you to spectacular scenery seldom seen and connecting you to a rich historic past. It's about fun and discovery, with the trip rather than the destination in mind. It's about roads for people who adore cars and have a passion for driving. This book is about roads that wiggle, and it's for people who love life and Wisconsin.

        You'll find:
*30 great tours that will take you to every corner of that state and introduce you to hundreds of fascinating places.
*Thorough, easy-to-use maps to guide you on your journeys.
*Listings of many outstanding reasons to stop, including parks and other points of scenic interest, tours, waysides, shops, restaurants, and other great attractions.

3 out of 5 stars Great idea, needs some work on useful information.......2004-07-18

The book is good, easy to read and provides interesting trips.

What it lacks is distance information and time-frames (yes, I know the author says all trips can be done in a day, but might take a weekend or more! That doesn't help scheduling a weekend trip).

It would be really useful to have distances between the high points of the trips, zip codes for the cities (mapquest, anyone?) and a basic time-frame for each section of each trip.

Finally, the book seems to ignore any source of information on the internet, always pointing you to phone numbers... If I don't stop my car to ask for directions, why would I call someone to get information??? ;-)

So, the book is good, but be prepared to consult additional resources for distances and durations. And regarding finding information on the internet - you are on your own...

...let me tell you a few things -- it really is the best darned guide to Wisconsin you'll ever find. He hit most every backroad in in the state. This book is different than the usual guides in that it focuses on the fun to drive wiggly roads that driving enthusiasts enjoy -- AND has an insiders view of where to go, stop, eat, play and shoot pictures. My husband says the publishers should have given it a better title...something like "The Cows Made us Do it"....but I suggest you get a copy and check out these tours. They're NOT your usual dash from one attraction to another. You'll have a great time. MPK

        5 out of 5 stars A great introduction!.......2006-03-01

I've always loved the story of the Lion, the witch and the wardrobe, but was rather unfamiliar with the other stories in the series. Passport to Narnia was an entertaining, effective introduction to the entirety of the tales of CS Lewis. I found the condensed life history of CS Lewis to be interesting and informative, and easy to read. The highlight of the book for me were the illustrations by Tim Kirk, especially the full page of Aslan going to the altar. As a collector, I also really enjoyed an introduction to some of the merchandise. I bought Peter on the unicorn as a result, which should be arriving shortly! I'm glad the author didn't focus on the smaller merchanside such as the toys... they are poorly made. Rather dissapointing after the vast amount of Tolkien merchanside that was available.
Thanks for the introduction into Narnia, George!

2 out of 5 stars *Too repetitive, off-topic, and commercial*.......2005-12-26

Sorry to say, I did judge this book by its cover, which is very attractive and eyecatching. After looking over several Narnia Guides, that was my determining factor in choosing this title.

But, ohmigosh! As another reviewer had mentioned redundancy, I'll try to find another word - and that would be tedious. Fully, LOTR is mentioned... well I stopped counting at 40 times, and that's not including the utterances of each of the trilogy's subtitles. I wasn't at all interested in comparison, and had I not already read the Tolkien series, and seen the movies, it would have been way-off base.

Think: "African elephants are like Indian elephants, they have different ears, which makes them alike, since they both have ears, but they are different, seeing one is not enough evidence to state one has actually seen an elephant which is strongly endorsed to be one or the other".

Sorry for the bad example, but it really reads like this. The last perhaps third of the book is dedicated to the collectibles and comments from WETA Wookshop, responsible for making the pictured items. Oddly enough, the items range in price from $150 to $300, and this is in a book written for children. Not including the back matter, the "guide" really stops on page 110 or so, but the next 70 pages contains theaspects of recorded versions, movie critique and the aforementioned trinkets for sale.

This, and the enthusiastic approach to the Disney version, and charms and jewelry only add to the commercial overtones of the book. I'm sorry, I wanted more content, less trivia and chit-chat.

There was a bright spot, however, and that is the great list of other resources, including websites and reading materials. I do wish he had gone into a bit more detail of how so many of the C. S. Lewis papers and the Wardrobe ended up in of all places, Wheaton, Illinois - so far from the Kilns, and England itself.

Truthfully, the disclaimer about the book not being prepared, endorsed or authorized by C. S. Lewis Pte Ltd, or any associated entity should have been the tip-off that perhaps there are others more suited to what I was looking for.

I bought this for a gift. Sadly, after reading through it myself on Christmas Day, I was disappointed. If, as the author says in his own review, that future editions will address some of the problems, what good is that to those who have already bought it?

4 out of 5 stars Delightful guide to Narnia.......2005-12-25

I came to George Beahm's Passport to Narnia with more or less tolerant amusement for Lewis' series, which I enjoyed reading in younger days, but always found lacking in any real depth. Being a afficionado of fantasy which developes a world to a deliciously excruciating level of detail (as with my all-time favorite author J. R. R. Tolkien's Middle Earth), I had been a bit disappointed at the lack of such development with Narnia. Still, the story is, and always will remain, a delightful children's story full of characters and symbolism which can be grasped by any reader.

Mr. Beahm did a creditable job of guiding me down the once-familiar paths of Narnia and bringing that world back to life for me. I found that this book added to my enjoyment of the film "The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe" when I had the chance to see it as well. The characters, places and events were just that much fresher for me for having read Beahm's Passport. I would recommend it to anyone just entering the world of Narnia, or to those, like myself, who would like to have the wonder of that world renewed.

5 out of 5 stars Great introduction into the world of Narnia and CS Lewis.......2005-12-06

For such a small little book, it's suprisingly has a lot more information than I expected. I was just assuming a real gloss over, but he seems to cover everything, without going too technical or crazy which makes it perfect for kids. I thought that the information on CS Lewis and his history was really helpful into appreciating the books that much more. The Chronicles of Narnia was one of my favorite series growing up, but not having read them in over 15 years, I thought this book would be a great way to refresh my memories before seeing the movie. In that it suceeds greatly. I was amazed that considering the book has just come out, it covers the first movie and even the Weta figures. A definite read before you read the series and see the movie(s)!

5 out of 5 stars Great guide for those both old and new to Narnia.......2005-11-27

This is a wonderful book for both newcomers to the world of Narnia and for old pros who just need a refresher course. The book is well laid out and very easy to follow. It has breakdowns of all the Chronicles, as well as an extensive listing of products available to the public.
So if you are looking for a great book to get you in the know about the world of Narnia, this is the book for you.

mRNA METABOLISM & POST-TRANSCRIPTIONAL GENE REGULATION

Edited by Joe B. Harford and David R. Morris

Gene expression is a process that begins with the transcription of DNA to an RNA messenger (mRNA), which is then translated into a protein. Historically, attention has been focused on the regulation of RNA synthesis (transcription); however, there is a growing recognition of and appreciation for the importance of the many regulatory mechanisms that take place after RNA synthesis has been completed.

mRNA Metabolism and Post-Transcriptional Gene Regulation is the first comprehensive overview of the various modes of gene regulation that exist post-transcriptionally. Collecting studies by some of the top researchers in the field, this volume provides both an up-to-date review of the complex "life" of an mRNA molecule and an introduction to current work on the diversity of mechanisms of post-transcriptional reactions.

          Topics covered include:

A timely contribution to the understanding of genetic regulatory mechanisms, mRNA Metabolism and Post-Transcriptional Gene Regulation provides a basis from which potential therapeutic strategies may be developed. This book will be of vital interest to cell and molecular biologists at all levels, from graduate students to senior investigators, clinical researchers, and professionals in the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries.

            Book Description

The spectacular success of the book and audio versions of Six Easy Pieces caused a worldwide clamor for more. The result is these six additional lectures, which the legendary teacher and Nobel physicist Richard P. Feyman gave in the early 1960's to freshman Caltech students. Though slightly more challenging than the first six, these additional lectures are more focused, delving into the most revolutionary discovery in twentieth-century physics: Einstein's Theory of Relativity.

            4 out of 5 stars From A Great Teacher.......2004-07-29

Though the title implies it, this book is not really a sequal to the Six Easy Pieces. They can be read seperately. It treats some of the concepts centered around Special and General Relativity that revolutionized physics near the turn of the century. It would be impossible to find another book that can dive so deeply into topics such as symmetry and space-time, while bypassing formalism and exposing the fundemental ideas and signficance in every-day terms. The delivery is in lecture form, and while that makes it more authentic and real, the fact that this is a book and the reader is not really in a lecture, makes it a little awkward. One often gets the feeling that one had to be there to get the full benefit. There is little attempt at explaining the historical context and other niceties and focus is solely on the concepts themselves. One needs to have at least college level math background to follow the derivations. Feynman has done a phenomenal job in reducing such complex concepts into digestable pieces of conversation. There is no abstraction, everything is quantified. I especially enjoyed the chapter Curved Space, as I had never seen it treated so intimately. The self consistency of all these topics and how they are interrelated is elegantly presented.

4 out of 5 stars Great lectures, though a bit out of place.......2004-05-31

Six not so Easy Pieses is a small anthology of six pieces taken from Feynman's great classic, The Feynman Lectures on Physics, which were delivered to Caltech freshman. I would not recommend buying this book unless you have an excellent backround in calculus and how it relates to physics. I have read the first volume of the Lectures, and i will tell you it is nice having this to accompany it, since some of the chapters such as on Relativity merit to be read twice and since the Lectures is so bulky and heavy. There is no way someone can read understand what he's saying without knowing a good amount of math. Its like reading a book in which all the concepts are expressed in Greek. Also, these lectures were given during the middle of course, and he often mentions things which were discussed in previous lectures. The reason it gets a four is because the lectures are great (many great lectures were ommitted though), but it is too short and is out of place. This is NOT a great sequel to Six Easy Lectures, they have practically nothing to do with each other. The perfect sequal to Six Easy Lectures is the whole first volume of the Lectures.

5 out of 5 stars Six More Elegantly Explained Concepts.......2003-04-05

Six Not-So-Easy Pieces is the sequel to the book Six Easy Pieces. The first book is a collection of six of the easier lectures from Feynman's freshman and sophomore physics classes at CalTech. Six Not-So-Easy Pieces are some of the more difficult lectures from those classes. In contrast to the first book, these lessons are much more mathematical. Freshman calculus is definitely a prerequisite to reading this book. Courses in vector calculus and differential equations will help the reader to more completely understand the works, but they are not absolutely necessary. However, without much mathematical knowledge, one can just take Feynman at his word for all the equations, reading mainly the conceptual explanations, but one will invariably miss out on some of the points. For anyone reading the book, Feynman's teaching style is something that can be enjoyed. He explains the concepts in a comprehensive and not-too-difficult manner and seems to have a full understanding of what the student in the lecture hall is thinking. The six topics (chapters) covered in this book are: Vectors, Symmetry in Physical Laws, The Special Theory of Relativity, Relativistic Energy and Motion, Space-Time, and Curved Space. This book is in no way a survey of physics. It is more of a sampling of Feynman's teaching. However, the common thread that runs through the six pieces is that they all relate to understanding relativity. For the layman who has a mathematical background and wants to understand the concept of relativity, this book is an excellent help. I would suggest reading Six Easy Pieces before reading this book, but it is not necessary. If you enjoyed reading the first book, I would highly recommend this one and vice versa.

3 out of 5 stars NOT for the beginner........2002-12-31

If you've got a fair background in beginning Calculus and elementary physics, you may find this book very worthwhile. I wouldn't know.

Don't be fooled, however, by reviewers who claim that Feynman explains things in such a way that even without those basic tools, the book isn't incomprehensible. I've HAD basic calculus, albeit a LONG time ago, and I'm a tad rusty. And I have even less grounding in physics. But I'm far from mathematically illiterate, or incapable. And it isn't true that I got nothing out of my reading of this book; the sixth chapter did, in fact, answer the question that I'd hoped to have answered when I bought it. But by and large, the book was close to impenetrable. Now, clearly, this may well be due to my lack of preparation in the prerequisites for understanding it. But it definitely is NOT the first step in the process of understanding physics, as one reviewer actually called it and others implied. Read "Six Easy Pieces" first, and brush up on first-year Calculus. THEN consider tackling this book.

            4 out of 5 stars An adventure.......2002-03-18

Though I'm not very excellent in Physic,I can understand what he wants to say easily. In the prosses of reading this book, you may find interesting for he never tells you the answer but guids you to find it by yourself. It's just like an adventure. In addition, if you are not satisfied with what you had learned, you can learn Feynman how to explain a thing more clearly and easily to people.

No single breakthrough in twentieth-century physics (with the possible exception of quantum mechanics) changed our view of the world more than that of Einstein's discovery of relativity. And no one- not even Einstein himself- explained relativity's difficult, anti-intuitive concepts more clearly, or with more verve and gusto, than Richard Feynman. Six lectures on six Compact Discs.
