Best Linear Unbiased Prediction (BLUP) has become the most widely accepted method for genetic evaluation of domestic livestock. Since its introduction, the method has evolved and despite this there is no simple text on the application of linear models to the predictions of breeding values.
This book has been written with a good balance of theory and application to fill this gap. Equations for partitioning breeding values into contributions from various sources of information are derived under the various models. Recent developments in the analysis of longitudinal data with random
regression models and the inclusion of genetic marker information in the evaluation of animals have been incorporated. Threshold models have been introduced in addition to the basic concepts and methods for variance compenent estimation including the use of the Gibbs sampler. Overall, the book has
been thoroughly updated since the first edition was published in 1996. It will appeal to advanced students in animal breeding and genetics.

This book is absolutely fascinating if you're at all interested in - well, in seafaring lore & legend. I found the writing style not dry at all, but very warm and affable. It's in some ways 'academic' - that is, written intelligently and carefully, not sloppily - but there was also definite personality in it. I would love to have a drink with this guy - he'd be funny and incredibly interesting.
Importantly, the writer has a clear love and passion for what he's writing about, and that gets you into it.
The layout was also very clear and practical - easy to find the information you're looking for.
This would be a great factual resource for writers, especially historical or fantasy writers.

This book has been around my home and to my work for the past few months. I really love both the way it is organized (in short single sitting chapters) and the range of material it covers. It is definitely not an in depth study of every lore and legend out there by any means. But it does not try to sell itself as such - it does offers a great sampling of many upon many stories out there, from well know to down right bizarre, which can then be further researched elsewhere to the readers desire. I throughly enjoyed "Seafaring Lore and Legend" and recommend it to any one with even an inkling of love for the sea.

This encyclopedia is a MUST HAVE for those who enjoy films at home or at the theatre.
Hard to beat.......2006-11-28
Without a doubt this is still the best all-around film encyclopedia available to the general public. Actors and actresses, directors, producers, photographers, costume designers, composers, and screenwriters are all included, from the silent era to the present. Each person gets a short biographical entry with a fairly complete listing of all movies they were involved with (these listings can be quite extensive). Movie associations and film terminology are also listed and explained. Individual movies are not listed as separate entries, however. My only quibble with this 5th edition is with the statement on the editor's note page that claims "we continue to keep our word and do not eliminate any of the more than 8,000 entries" - which I assume means from previous editions. Yet in comparing it with the first edition (1979) in just the first 20 pages (out of over 1500) I count a half-dozen or so names that are missing that were included in the first. Perhaps these names were taken out in the 2nd or 3rd editions, but that still makes the claim hard to justify. But this is a minor complaint; this volume should be on every movie lover's shelf.
The Film Encyclopedia 5e....by Ephraim Katz.......2006-11-10
I updated from an earlier edition on this book. I consider this to be an esssential for the movie lover. Not a book with movie reviews, but a (large) volumn of info of all types. Bio's of the stars & performers list all of their films. Many articles on techniques, etc make this a 1 volumn source of info on just about anything movie wise.
My Finger-tip Reference Guide.......2006-11-04
This is the 3rd edition I have purchased, since the info continually changes. It's the most comprehensive guide to information about the movie industry and I will continue to buy each new edition. I highly recommend it to any one who enjoys movie history and trivia.

Hank Ketcham, the self-styled "Merchant of Dennis," passed away in 2001 at the age of 81, but not before writing this engaging memoir. In this volume, the Dennis the Menace creator charmingly tells his own colorful story, starting when he was about "five-ana-half" and first picked up the "magic pencil." A child of the Great Depression from Seattle, Ketcham abandoned college for Hollywood, to pursue a dream of making drawings for Walt Disney films. Initially rebuffed at Disney, he persisted in huffing and puffing at the Mouse Factory door (all the while drawing "Andy Pandas, rabbits, squirrels, and monkeys" at Walter Lantz studio) until finally he was let inside to labor happily on Pinocchio, Bambi, Fantasia and a host of Donald Duck shorts. World War II intervened, but Photographer's Mate Ketcham was, nevertheless, able to resume his artistic career in the Navy, where, in Washington, D.C., he created cartoons for the War Bond program. Superb collection of stylish, cold, empty Dennis art.......2004-02-16
Hank Ketcham's cartoons are exquisite, absolutely lyrical, yet formula driven. This is the best collection of his work, and it is very instructive for aspiring cartoonists, because it shows a lot of preliminary sktches and model sheets (similar to the developement of animated films by Disney, where Ketcham worked for a time). Yet Ketcham was an artistic mediocrity with great technical facility but nothing genuine to say, and he was a stranger to his own family, especially to his son, Dennis. It's positively weird that Ketcham shows pictures of his son at age 5, the obvious inspiration for the successful strip, but after that HE PRETENDS HIS SON DOESN'T EVEN EXIST! I went through the book several times trying to find out the fate of the real Dennis, but he is simply ignored. Apparently, Ketcham's wife had psychological problems, the cartoonist divorced her and moved to Switzerland, never speaking to the boy again. Ketcham remarried, his former wife committed suicide, little Dennis came back from Vietnam with problems that he never fully overcame, and the two had no relationship beyond the stipend his father sent to keep him quiet. None of this is hinted at in Ketcham's book, which is strictly about how wonderful suburbia is, and how cute that little rascal Dennis is, and how Ketcham's career just went up and up and up. He made himself a wealthy man by selling the character every which way, eventually training assistants who gradually took over the drawing and writing, leaving Ketcham a rich, leisurely copyright owner. The gags have an artificial, frozen-in-the-fifties quality, and in all the years I have read it, it has never once been funny, thought provoking or connected to any real feelings. But the drawing of the characters and backgrounds was (when Ketcham did it personally) unsurpassed in its flowing simplicity, in its bold, unerring design. He was a true master, and his strip is still being produced, but it is just a meaningless commodity. I wonder where his son Dennis is today?
Classic Cartoons, A Great Cartoonist, Needs a Reprint!.......2000-07-11
I saw this book about 8 years ago at a college library. It features some of the best Dennis the Menace cartoons and tells of some of Hank Ketcham's real-life adventures (Hank is the author of the classic cartoon). Hank based the cartoon on himself and his real-life son, Dennis (He used to tell people "Our son Dennis is a real menace!"). If you look at some of the real-life family photos, you'll notice quite a resemblance between the Mitchell family and the Ketcham family! Hank Ketcham later took off to live in Europe in the 1960's (there's a hilarious cartoon that shows Mr. Wilson's delight that Dennis is going on a vacation but disappointed that his little nemesis will be returning!). Some of you may not understand a lot of what I'm talking about in this review and I guess you'd have to pick up a copy of The Merchant of Dennis the Menace to get a better idea of what I'm saying (which, unless this gets reprinted, many of you may never get the chance).

This book does contain alot of information on cockers, especially helpful if interested in breeding or showing.
Includes grooming and training tips. Was a little disappointed though that the pictures are small and in black & white. Alot of them are demonstration or example photos and are hard to see.

The development of the breed is explained and its relationship to the Sussex, Field and English Cocker breeds is defined. The photos are charming. The section on Form vs function is worth the price of the book. This is one book you shouldn't overlook.

This is a must get. Especially for anyone truly interested in breeding cockers for show, color, and comformation. It has an excellent chapter in breeding for coat color and genetics. The book is written well with a touch of humor from a man who has much experience with the cockers; not someone who wants to publish a book about the breed. He has many references to other reading material, as well as a very thorough history of the breed, including many pedigrees on these dogs. Not just for Floridians.......2004-10-26
This slim (64 pages), oversize book is crowded with photos of flowering Southern trees and a wide variety of palms. It would be better if it included a full picture of a tree showing it's growth pattern and not just pictures of the flowers or seeds. It is more inclusive for the palms, showing full-length photos besides the leaves.
It is indexed inside the back cover. The descriptions are interesting, telling some of the growth habits, and uses of each tree. One problem arises when 3 or 4 trees are shown on one page; it is difficult to tell which block of text matches which photo.
Overall, a useful and fairly comprehensive photo album of Florida's trees, filled with lovely, colorful pictures.

This is a great book for anyone who wants to learn to identify the different trees common to Florida. I got this book when I bought a house and started thinking about landscaping, and wanted to be able to identify trees around here. Great photos, helpful text, I would definitely recommend it.
Really great pictures.......2003-04-22
This book has really great pictures in glorious color. That is just about all that can be said for or about this book.
The text is so-so: The worst offense appears (p43) "bansai trees" where they mean "bonzai trees", but the rest of the text is not nearly that bad. For a book on trees there are remarkably few trees in it. Something like half the book is palms.
The oversized pages make this a somewhat clumsy book. But the pictures are really, really great!
Great Picture Book.......2003-02-01
This is a great photo guide to Florida's trees. I wanted to identify some of the trees that we see on our annual vacations to Florida over the years and this book did the trick. It's not a technical horticultural guide but just a book with lots of pictures of hundreds of different species with foliage, flowers, shape, color and anything else you need to sucessfully identify tropical trees.

Porch Style: Just what I was looking for! I had been thinking of re-designing my back yard to include a porch, and was looking for ideas that illustrated more than the traditional decking and roofing. I wanted a book that each time I browsed I would find something new to think about. I wanted a reference and learning guide. For those who are considering a change to an existing porch, adding a new porch or creating a free-standing porch in a garden area, this book offers many possibilities. The authors provided a wide variety of styles, both conventional and not-so-conventional, decorating tips that stimulated and complimented my own, information and history that educated. A bonus I didn't expect to find but did is a travel book that engulfed me in the scenery of the subjects. So... you're not designing or re-designing a porch, but love coffee table books, it's a great read for the vacationers who once a year find themselves on someone else's porch. Book Description
TEX has always been regarded as the most elegant and powerful system for computer typesetting. However, its widespread use, beyond academia, was hampered by its complexity. Recently, fairly good TEX implementations have come out for PCs putting TEX on the desks of many people: writers, designers, desktop publishers, engineers, and consequently, the interest in TEX has surged. What is needed at this point is a book that teaches step-by-step how to use TEX, illustrating each step by meaningful examples. This is exactly what S.v. Bechtolsheim's book does. It is a tutorial and guide for the first-time users of TEX, as well as a reference for the most experienced "TEXpert."
TEX in
Practice will appear as a four volume set, starting with volume 1 Basics, followed by volume 2 Paragraphs, Math and Fonts, volume 3 Tokens, Macros and volume 4 Output Routines, Tables.
TEX in Practice will be an indispensable reference for the TEX community and a guide through the first steps for the TEX novice.

An attempt at creating the ultimate TeX reference!.......2000-10-12
I applaud the author for his work in compiling this vast collection of knowledge and information regarding the TeX typesetting language. It is unfortunate that the publisher, Springer I believe, didn't take more time in doing editorial reviews. I found MANY language and spelling errors, all of which could have been remiedied easily via a little editing. As a TeX user dating back to the mid 1980s, I found the information in this set of volumes useful. In some instances however, I felt that the author got lost in minute details that didn't contribute to the subject matter at hand. Overall, I rank this reference as being fairly good and very detailed. I always felt that everything could have been said with 30% less words than were actually written. Considering the, relatively high, cost of the set, I would recommend this set for purchase ONLY IF YOU'RE ABSOLUTELY ADDICTED TO THE FINE DETAILS OF THIS TYPESETTING LANGUAGE. If you are a user who is looking for a reference to enhance your productivity in/with TeX, I would refer you to other available references which are marketed at a fraction of the cost.

TeX computer typesetting language. If you found Knuth's
TeXbook useful, you will find this book, and its three
companions very useful, informative, and worthwhile on your
computer science reference shelf.

The early life of one of Father Thomas Merton's best known Novices in Gethsemane.......2007-06-05
Father Ernesto Cardenal has the gift and grace from God of being at the eye of every hurricane in our twentieth century Catholic Church and on into this brave new millenium. Here he writes the first volume of his autobiography, available here from several printing houses. THe one I have was published as part of the Los Tres Mundos series, which includes a work by Miguel Littin, and published by Editorial Seix Barral in Barcelona, in 1999. More recently, in 2003, another edition was printed by the Latin American Fund.
The title of this autobiography is drawn from Saint Luke's Gospel, chapter 9, verse 24: "Who loses his life for me, will save it." Therefore this large thick 459 page volume recounts how busily and far Father Cardenal traveled to lose his life for the Lord. Thus this book includes his early travels to Europe, to entering the Cistercian Abbey in Gethsemane while Father Thomas Merton served as Novice Master, on to ordination in Cuernavaca, and back to his homeland, Nicaragua. On the copyright page we find Father Cardenal insisted the publisher retain the Nicaraguan dialect of Spanish in which it was written. As I lived in Nicaragua twenty years ago while Father Cardenal served as Cultural Minister, and frequently met him in his small offices in the former large bathroom of the former US supported dictator's wife's palace, I welcome with relief and joy reading this good strong language once more, written so well by this great poet and priest.
I urge everyone to read the life of this great Catholic priest who truly and entirely has devoted his life in the service of our Lord and His Church, at the great and constant risk of losing this life, losing his life entirely for Our Lord in peace and compassion. As this volume discusses much about his time in Gethsemane, the reader does well to supplement this reading with the record of continuing correspondence between Fathers Merton and Cardenal as comprehensively and generously published in the collection of Father Merton's letters to writers entitled Courage For Truth: The Letters Of Thomas Merton To Writers.
Most interesting for me at this moment is reading the selections from his Novitiate notebook presented here, including such mundane issues as dealing, as a Nicaraguan, used to intense heat day and night all year round, dealing with the alien Kentucky climate, and enjoying the flora and fauna including joyful chipmunks, and feeling home in the familiar sounds of roosters and cows. Included among these notes are spiritual reflections as well, such as this which I poorly translate for you here, without the reference to Soren Kierkegaard:
"Not only must we have peace, as Father Merton told me, but also agony like the rest of the people of the world, because agony is appropriate to our times. (p.225)"
It still is even moreso now in our time of war and injustice and growing poverty and disease. Let us pray for peace.
Please read this book. Father Cardenal is a great Catholic soul who has seen great and crucial moments in our Catholic Church, including while kneeling awaiting a personal Papal blessing on the tarmac of the Managua International Airport, beaming with joy. He beams still, even through losing his life to take on all of the agony of our world's peoples.
Please read this book. Great for the beach, for chapel, for everyone everywhere anytime. Great way to improve your Spanish, as well as your soul!

Este es uno de esos libros que nunca se olvidad, en el podemos encontrar las respuestas a muchas preguntas que se a formulado miles de lectores sobre el Poeta, Monje, revolucionario y teólogo de la liberación nicaragüense. Ernesto Cardenal describe en este primer tomo sus años de juventud en la vieja managua, bañado con la mística de San Juan de la Cruz y engendrado con la joven revolución sandinista de los años 60. La influencia de Tomas Merton sale a relucir y queda marcada en sus escritos desde su encuentro en la trapa de Gethsemani, redactado con el corazón el cual le ayudo a este gran poeta descubrir su peores lados, toques de humor hacen la lectura de esta obra un viaje muy placentero en la vida de un hombre muy multifacético Y poco conocida para las nueva generaciones, leer la vida de Ernesto Cardenal es mirar la historia de Nicaragua, le cuesta cambiar,cae pero se levanta y sigue teniendo fe que algún día llegara a la casa de su amado. Si eres Nicaraguense disfrutaras este libro lleno de historia y poesia, y si no conoces mucho de este poeta o de nicaragua puedes comensar con esta primera obra bigrafica del Poeta trapense de Solentiname.

a fascinating book.......2006-03-03
Ernesto Cardenal is an excellent poet, therfore he has the gift to write in a fascinating manner, whatever he wants to express. In this book he tells about his youth , his time in the monastery "Gethsemane",especially the conversations with his mentor Thomas Merton helping to plan his future task leading the farmer-community in Solentiname (Niceragua) and being part of the latter revolution against the dictatorship.The mean thought in his heart and in his life is the love of god.
I read the book inSpanish, the original language.
