A nice looking Mt. Rainier Trail Guide.......2006-12-30

This book is great for light weight planning. it has nice photos, and a good selection of hikes. For a person who wants some guidance on where to go hiking, this is a great place to start. It's a beautiful book. We put this book in all three of our Mt. Rainier cabins at Three Bears Lodge. The guests do love to review them when they're planning their next day's assault.

A Great Hiking Guide, To "The Mountain".......2005-04-27

This book is great. It gives detailed descriptions of the trail, detailed maps and great photos. Many hikes can be done in less than 6 hours. This guide has helped me decide on what trails to see on my trip to Seattle-Washington-Mount Rainier in Aug. of 2005.

The authors of this book, Ira Spring and Harvey Manning, really show their respect for Mount Rainier, by calling it "The Mountain" and it always being capitalized.

A Yawner.......2002-06-20

The best thing you can say about this umpteenth edition of this guide is that it has some nice color pictures. Even then, though, they aren't always accurate - like the picture of Ranger Falls, which really isn't Ranger Falls, but a lower falls about a quarter-mile down the trail from the real Ranger Falls. Or the picture of the "Avalanche lily" on page 69, which is really a glacier lily. You'd think a pair of old veterans like Ira Spring and Harvey Manning would know things like that.
That first photo is on the Green Lake hike, which the author tells you starts at elevation 985 feet. In fact, the elevation at the trailhead is about 2,100 feet. There are several mistakes like this throughout the book, which makes me wonder how carefully the book has been edited. After all, they've had four tries.
The maps aren't really maps at all, but confusing little sketches which show you very little about the trail you will be walking. There are no contour lines and pitifully few elevations given, and you've got to wade through paragraphs of boring, often preachy text to find out whether the trail is uphill or downhill on specific sections. Compare these useless cartoons to the clear, excellent topographic maps in Ron C. Judd's new "Day Hike! Mount Rainier," and see which you'd rather try to follow with a compass.
Of all the guides to trails on Mount Rainier, this has got to be the worst.

Pretty pictures; but info shows its age.......2001-10-11

The new color pics are great, but one has to wonder if Harvey, et al, are letting the details slip in their golden years. One whole section, for trails on the (washed out) West Side Road, tells you to get on the "shuttle bus" and be dropped off at the trailhead -- when in fact no such bus exists, and probably won't for years, according to park rangers. This minor inconvenience adds as much as 10 miles to some of those hikes -- and these distances are NOT spelled out in the guide. There also seeems to be sloppy editing; more than one altitude-gain stats are wrong, as in, 2,300 rather than 3,200. That's a big difference. Also, like other Mountaineers guides released recently, the authors in this one seem to be at war with their own publishers. Example: The route they suggest to Indian Henry's Hunting Grounds is no longer even maintained by the park, and another route is described on the next page as "safer." Why, then, include the old route? The authors might want to spend less time defending their old choices and more time making new ones. I'm frankly not interested in the best hikes in the park circa 1965. In sum: Worth having for the pics, but supplement it with something else for trail data.

Very helpful.......2001-08-17

This book is a great resource to help you plan your hikes in Mount Rainier National Park. The trail descriptions are good and show trail lengths and level of difficulty. My only complaint about the book is that the individual trail maps throughout the book don't maintain a consistent North/South orientation and can be confusing to follow from one to the next.

I got The Wild Life of Cats as soon as it came out! It's great! I also bought several copies for my friends and they love it! The humor is really right-on target and anbody who's the least bit familiar with cats - or ever even seen a cat - will recognize and apprecite the cartoons! All of the cartoons are in color, which is very nice. My kids love it and my cats even recognize themselves!

I found "The Wild Life of Cats" to be hilarious and I highly recommend it. You don't have to be a cat lover to enjoy this all color cartoon book. But if you are a cat lover (like me!) this marvelous collection will make you laugh page after page. Rubes knows how to capture humorous insights of animals like no other cartoonist. Any one in his series of Wild Life books (Cows, Dogs, Farm Animals, and Pets) would make an excellent present for family and friends... if they enjoy a good laugh!

Clever, Witty and Funny!.......2005-12-23

There were so many laughs in this book! Rubin has really captured the subtle personality quirks of cats. He's really gotten into the mindset of how a cat would think. Lots of clever wordplay and new takes on classic cat stereotypes.What's also cool is that it's in full color....really unusual for a cartoon collection. My family loved it! We are giving it to all of our many cat loving friends this Christmas.

We received the book on a Saturday and read it cover to cover that evening! My husband laughed so hard that the couch shook! As we moved from page to page we chuckled, smiled , and laughed til tears came ....Leigh Rubin is a comic genius!. There are many levels to his insighful, powerful cartoons. The various levels of humor make his books appealing to every person...and also make the books fun to read over and over again. We see different aspects of the 'joke' with each reading..making the purchase a real bargain ! I encourage you to try this one ...and then expand your "Rubes" library...we certainly have ! :)

This is a great book for people who want to grow bromeliads at home. It has lots of information and lots of good photos. The only drawback is that the index is by Latin names and if you don't know the correct name you have to flip through the whole book and hope you find a photo.

Filled with excellent color photos of plants in gardens as well as close, detail shots of fantastic bromeliads. Excellent section on care and problem solving. Good basic overview of this intriguing tropical species. Clear descriptions of plants and their needs, written for the gardener. Some images are so voluptuous they border on plant pornography; they ignite a desire to grow these tender beauties.

Two ideas new to me.......2006-01-03

I enjoyed Stegemann's book very much. In spite of the fact that he presented a great deal of material,I never felt bogged down in unnecessary detail.

Two ideas in his book were new to me. First, that the Teacher of Righteousness died of old age, when everything else that I have read has him being slain. Second, that the basis of normative Rabbinic Judaism has its roots in Essene theology. Again this goes against everything else that I have ever read, which has normative Rabbinic Judaism coming out of Pharasaic Judaism.

A great, comprehensive introduction.......2004-06-28

Hartmut Stegemann's text on the Dead Sea Scrolls is one of the most popular introductory texts of the subject available in the German language. Here translated into English, it is a welcome addition to the body of literature about the scrolls. While essentially it covers the same material as many other introductions on the scrolls, Stegemann's writing style, focus and authoritative manner are interesting and useful.

Stegemann's first few chapters discuss the discoveries and dating of the manuscripts. The earliest discoveries in the Qumrani region occurred in 1947/48, with the majority of the rest of the scrolls being found in the following decade. Stegemann addresses in these early chapters the issues of dating the scrolls and the publication process, which he defends vigourous, and he chides the detractors of the process, holding particular ire for the book 'The Dead Sea Scrolls Deception' by Baigent and Leigh, a popular book that sensationalised the scroll publication delay by speculating on sinister plots by church officials to suppress damaging revelations. Unfortunately, Stegemann's view, while justified for the most part in discounting books such as Baigent and Leigh's, does not take into account the academic territoriality which, while far less explosive and sensational than a Vatican-led plot of suppression, still has an element of shameful restriction to it.

Stegemann proceeds to explore the archaeological excavations and reconstructions of the Qumrani settlement, which, according to the official scroll team interpretations (of which Stegemann is a strong adherent, and are generally the most probable) was a monastic-type settlement of the Essenes, a minor Jewish sect; the scrolls for the most part consisted of the library of this community. Stegemann gives one of the better short introductions to the settlement available, going through the buildings and cemeteries, as well as the artifacts discovered, to piece together a portrait of the community.

Stegemann also explores the caves themselves, highlighting the discovery and contents of each of the eleven primary caves in turn. He also gives general information about the condition of the caves, other artifacts discovered, and alternate interpretations of the caves and their contents. For example, Norman Golb's view of the Qumrani structures is that they were military outposts; the Donceels consider it to be a private villa.

Stegemann gives a comprehensive survey of the types of materials found among the scrolls. the largest body is biblical manuscripts, which pushes the age of the original autographs of Hebrew bible texts back as far as 1500 years in some cases. There are nearly 200 different biblical manuscripts among the almost 900 scrolls, including some of the larger pieces, such as a nearly complete copy of the book of Isaiah dating from 100 BCE. The integrity of textual transmission through the ages was strengthened by the comparison of documents. They also strengthened the veracity of the dating of the Samaritan Pentateuch. Other documents discovered include apocyrphal, pseudipigraphical, commentary and Essene-original writings. There are also a good number of phylacteries among the documents found.

The final several chapters cover the Essenes, parallel images with the figures of John the Baptist and Jesus, and historical discussions of early Christianity and early Rabbinic Judaism. Stegemann's interpretation is that, far from the scrolls showing early Christians and figures such as John the Baptist as Essenes (some of the more sensational interpretations), that in fact the scroll discoveries make such parallels nearly impossible to support. He does propose that the Essenes were far more important in the development of early Christianity and Rabbinic Judaism than previously thought, and that the position of the Pharisees has historically been overemphasised.

Stegemann gives a good list of suggested readings, several useful indexes, and a collection of worthwhile maps of the Palestinian region as well as the Dead Sea area and the excavations of Qumran in the back of the book.

This is an excellent one volume introduction and overview of the scrolls, from history to contents to translation to importance.

Good overview with a bit of speculation.......2001-02-27

This generally helpful book breaks from its task, I think, when it speculates about the character of pre-second temple Israelite religion. Up to that point it provides a lovely overview of the Qumran's reconstructed history, a skillful debunking of the sensational stories of Jesus and John the Baptist emerging from the sect, and a good rundown of the contents of the various Dead Sea Scrolls. All this is done responsibly and with an eye on the larger scholarly community.

The one part with which I took issue was his evaluation of pre-second temple Israelite religion. Contrary to much scholarly evidence, he maintains that, before the faction development that arose out of the second temple period, Israel was pretty much a monolithic religious entity. If this were the case, the many attacks on those who maintain shrines outside of Jerusalem (see Deuteronomy, Kings, etc.) would not be such a prominent part of the Scriptures.

Overall the book is excellent, and the pre-second temple material is only background to the main arguments. Overall this is certainly a book worth reading if one is interested in the scrolls at Qumran.
