Book Description
The advent of powerful molecular techniques for uncovering naturally occurring genetic variation has greatly facilitated the understanding of problems in behavioural ecology and population biology. The correct interpretation of these data requires an understanding of both the internal mutational processes within nuclear and organelle genomes, and the external processes of selection and the drift that affects the standing level of genetic variation. This short book concisely describes the underlying sources of genomic variation, how they can be detected and analysed (with an emphasis on modern techniques like PCR and DNA fingerprinting), and how to interpret observed variation, taking into account the variety of contributing factors. Examples of applications of molecular genetics in behavioural ecology and population genetics are drawn from current literature. Molecular Genetic Ecology introduces a quickly emerging discipline in a way that is both accessible to students, and informative to researchers in related fields.

Enough is enough! To survive the drama in her life, Bindy must make some tough decisions in this funny, searching novel about being true to yourself.
Customer Reviews:
Unique among novels highlighting early adolescent issues.......2006-01-04
Belinda Grubb, called Bindy, doesn't want to face changes; she wants her life to stay as it is with her best frienf Jane Madden, her dad, and brother Kyle. 8th grade starts out to be the ultimate test for Bindy; should she accept Janey's new popular friends and conform to their "cool" habits or stay behind while everything changes around her? Every aspect of her adolescent life changes quickly: her mom seems to care more for her boyfriend than parenting; school becomes unbearable when Janey and Hannah, a rich girl who thinks abbreviations are SVC (so very chic), taunt her for being a baby; and her father and Janey's mother start going out. The stress grows until Being Bindy reaches a climax with Janey passing around Bindy's underwear during a school assembly by Bindy and her brother Kyle. Can the girls get over their differences and remain best friends? Only time will tell when one is in eighth grade.
Alyssa Brugman's Being Bindy is unique among novels highlighting early adolescent issues because of the author's Australian influence and references throughout the novel. This shows how teens around the world are so similar yet have different educational systems. The book is a quick read and enjoyable because of the author's simple style and approach. I doubt Being Bindy will be a best seller, however, because of its similarity to other books aimed at young adolescents such as the Alice books by Phyllis Naylor and because it doesn't seem as captivating as The Princess Diaries for instance. I really liked the Australian references; it was something new and a great exposure to other world societies.

Customer Reviews:
A "textbook" that is both funny and useful? You bet!.......2007-07-25
This book was recommended for my Physics 7B class at UC Berkeley, so I bought it. This volume consists of exercises related to electricity and magnetism. It includes many example problems and detailed solutions that students can use to check their work. At the end of the book, there are several practice exams that students can use to prepare for their actual exams.
I would definitely recommend this book if you are taking a physics class.
Excellent .......2007-04-14
A big help for college Physics II. It presents a concept in a way that is easy to understand.
Life Saver.......2000-06-22
If it wasn't for this book, there is no way I could have passed my physics class. The textbook used was absolutely incomprehensible, but this book led me through problems and helped me understand the concepts rather than just come up with the correct answers.
You should get this book........2000-03-01
This book explained things much more clearly than my textbook. If you're taking physics you should get it.
Awesome Help.......1999-10-02
Andy Elby provides a really good set of problems and solutions for E&M. He shows you typical problems that your professor will ask you, explains what the problem wants you to do, and finally how to go about solving the problem. Helped me ace Physics 7B at Berkeley. Ideal source for those who look at a physics problem and don't know where to start. Especially with E and M, the correct problem solving path is not always obvious, since Electricity and Magnetism isn't something you can touch or visualize as easily as mechanics.

Book Description
Avatars and acolytes Byron, De Quincey, Wilde and more, are here, all at their unwholesome best. English Decadence was not a polite response to French invention, but the hothouse blossoming of long indigenous researches into the perverse. Like Imperial Rome, England could hardly subdue and rule the globe without becoming corrupt. The Romantics tried rebellion, but amidst Victorian industry, terminally fatigued Decadents concerned themselves with cultivating their addiction to luxury and sensation. This is the most wide-ranging, important collection of English decadent writing ever published.

Customer Reviews:
C'est La Vie.......2007-08-27
For readers who are looking for a book that gives the nuts and bolts of moving to Paris served up with humor and pathos, this is it! Already a well-known writer and a person with international connections, she is not
your average housewife moving overseas since her network of friends keeps her with constant invitations to various functions, thus her move was made
far easier because of that. But she faces enough of the daily chores of
living that the narrative is kept plausible enough for the average person to relate to the hardships involved in moving overseas, even to a city like Paris. Very enlightening about everyday life in the city.
The Princess Diary.......2007-07-31
I'm a sucker for the move-to-Paris (Provence, Tuscany, Spain, etc.) genre, with one caveat. I like the stories where the writer has actually moved to Paris or wherever, and is not just buying a summer home expecting to become a native. In other words, I liked A Year in Provence, and was not so fond of Under the Tuscan Sun.
In C'est la Vie, Suzy Gershman has indeed sold her house in the States and moved to Paris. She is newly widowed, which adds a different twist to this story. Gershman tells how she managed to get an apartment and furniture, how she dealt with the French bureaucaracy without speaking much French, how she coped with losing her husband, and how she got back into the dating game. She keeps an upbeat attitude in spite of all the obstacles and becomes, as an acquaintance tells her, "almost French."
C'est la Vie has everything going for it, and yet, I feel as if I should have enjoyed it more than I did. I was not aware of Gershman's Born to Shop series of books, so was a bit perplexed by the frequent and detailed shopping interludes. Apparently, she is also a celebrity of sorts, so she does a bit of name-dropping. She doesn't flinch at popping for regular trips to London to have her hair and nails done, so she isn't exactly a budget traveler.
C'est la Vie reads more like a fantasy than like a travel memoir. I guess I was expecting to identify with Gershman, but the affair with the wealthy Count, the New Year's Eve assignation with a handsome Italian at the Ritz, the purchase of a summer home in Provence, made it a wee bit difficult to connect with Suzy.
Although I did enjoy C'est la Vie, I also recommend Almost French by Sarah Turnbull. It's written by an Australian journalist who travels to Paris, falls in love with a French man, and stays. Somehow, I found her story much more real.
I am underwhelmed and I just returned from Paris.......2007-03-12
Having just returned to the States from two weeks in Paris, France, I picked up this book half-priced here
on the west coast. I wanted so much to like it...but I am disappointed. This book was published by Penguin no less, and the writing is tacky and the thinking shallow. I did not know that Suzy
Gershman is the Born to Shop series author, which kind of explains the fact that she goes on endlessly about her shopping sprees, which become very boring. She seems to have so little knowledge of French history, art, and literature, that her idea of "being French" is eating at the right cafes and sleeping with an ancient French man. I am almost at the end of the book, and there has been no mention of the fabulous paintings and sculpture of Paris, as well as the museums and wonderful ethnic diversity (we went to a terrific Asian-French cafe right off the Champs Elysees, for instance). Despite her great connections, I feel a bit sorry for Suzy. She is very revealing about her personal life, and at times even I had to laugh at some of her silly antics, but she is not a very good writer, just a good schmoozer. You still might want to read the book if you want something kinda trashy to read in your bubble bath or whatever. I was amused by her cooking instant brownies and serving them to the French. I wonder what they think of her! It's a bit horrifying to think that she may be their idea of a typical American.
Enjoyed very much.......2007-02-04
I loved this book, wish it would have gone on and on. I am "into" French stuff right now so I found the book very intersting and very fun and very fast read.
C'est La Vie: An American Woman Begins a New Life in Paris.......2007-01-19
This book is a reality check. It's hard to read because it isn't all "hearts & flowers" about Paris and France. She had a hard time and details her struggles. But go to the finish. You'll be so glad you did!
There is so much good information but I also found it fun to follow her adaptation to the French culture.
This is a great book to give someone who is thinking about moving to France; Paris in particular. They might have a chance of having all the paperwork it will take to rent an apartment!

Tells of the performing mascot's importance to the Academy.......2004-10-10
When a new American military academy was being planned and it needed a mascot - but not just any old bird; one which would represent the U.S. Air Force Academy's mission of flying and fighting. It seemed the falcon would best fit the bill, and Falconry At The United States Air Force Academy tells of the performing mascot's importance to the Academy, as well as the overall history of falconry.

Book Description
This short introductory text de-mystifies the European Union's structures and operation. Blending scholarly expertise and practitioners' experience, the authors introduce and analyse the EU's key actors, processes and developments. Amongst the book's distinctive features are exhibits contrasting how the EU appears on paper (its treaties and formal rules) with how it works in practice. The book also features exhibits comparing the EU with other international bodies and systems of government. This will help students to better understand the EU by underlining how it is like other systems of governance and in what ways it is unique. The book's overall aim is to provide an accessible, lively introduction to how the EU works and why it matters.
Customer Reviews:
Out of date and poorly written........2007-10-16
Things are constantly changing in the European Union, which makes it incredibly difficult to publish and up-to-date book about it. This book is already outdated, and to top it off, it's written very poorly. The wording is vague and never to the point. It was required for a class I took, and I learned more by looking up "European Union" on Wikipedia than I ever did from this book.

ANOTHER WONDERFUL BOOK that will leave you in awe.......2002-04-06
If you want to impact your knowledge of the earth and the power of working with Nature buy this book. Viktor Schauberger was a man way ahead of his time. If you want to be a master of the earth, buy this book along with: Secrets of the Soil : New Solutions for Restoring Our Planet by Peter Tompkins, Christopher Bird and any books by Phil Callahan. In the near future the information in these books will be mandatory for anyone in farming.
Our Senseless Toil.......2001-05-24
I had to use a title from one of the books' opening chapters. This book is going to annoy some people. Callum Coats presents Viktor Schuaberger's theories in a modern light. The laws of Nature, Questions for Science, Nature as Teacher, the fish-eagle, the swing, the trout, the ox, dancing logs and stones, the Genesis of water, the coming bio-technical age, the secret of the egg form...these are elucidated...then comes the fun stuff... the age-old secret of the atom, implosive breathing, life-force and animated breathing, is there perpetual motion (?), organic syntheses, the false world view, the mechanical equivelant of heat, plasmolytic motion; this volume gives tremendous insight into what is happening in the world, today, and practical solutions on HOW we may yet save our world. Most telling is Schauberger's innane gut feelings on the powers at work in the environment, and living water. Hey, it's only volume two of the series. Get all four, and see how these books will influence YOU to change the way we look at the earth.
read this book.......2001-03-05
This should be required reading for anyone studying any type of science. Anyone studying engineering should read this- it will probably make you feel stupid, but ultimately it will give a direction to pursue your field in a way that does not destroy the planet- though it will destroy the compromised and demoralized status quo if followed. Before all else, seek understanding.
Well, what can I say ..........2000-11-04
If you have made it until here, buy the book.
It is not for everyone. Some people, especially technocrats may be annoyed by its contents.
Victor describes his experiences with nature and how he gained his knowledge about water, levitation and many other things.
His insights go well beyond the boundaries of contemporary science, because they deal in the realm of the higher worlds. I would recommend anyone who wants to understand Victors writings to read Steiner's "How to know higher worlds".
Victor describes the technology of the higher worlds.
These are not books, that you can consume. They will transform you. It may happen that you read and then put them aside for 10 years or so. But you WILL come back to them, because they teach you the deepest truth.
I give this a top rank. Its great.
Nature as Teacher.......2000-10-29
I liked this book because it dealt with physics and metaphysics. Such subjects as the creation of life, natures plans, and personal experiences with understanding nature. At the beginning it was difficult to understand but as reading progresses it becomes easier. The author, obviously a genius, is indeed a rare talent.
