Book Description
The 1957 Pescara Grand Prix marked the end of an era in motor racing. Sixteen cars and drivers raced over public roads on the Adriatic coast in a three-hour race of frightening speed and constant danger. Stirling Moss won the race, ending years of supremacy by the Italian teams of Ferrari and Maserati. Richard Williams brings this pivotal race back to life, reminding us of how far the sport has changed in the intervening fifty years. The narrative includes testaments from the four surviving drivers who competed—Stirling Moss, Tony Brooks, Roy Salvadori, and Jack Brabham.
Customer Reviews:
The Golden Era of Racing.......2007-08-18
Richard Williams does a masterful, succient job with retelling the story of the last F-1 race at Pescara won by Sir Stirling Moss. He adequately covers all the key players and give just enough background about each, both on and off the track, to make the read interested in the unfolding story. Appreciated the smallness of the book since it is much easier to handle and read late at night as compared to those monstrous coffee table books. I'd like to see Williams do some more similarly sized books on either races of the era, perhaps covering the Monaco GP during the 1960sk

A Dope Buy...Check it Out!.......2003-10-15
Ann Raimes' Keys for Writers is a comprehensive, clever, well-coordinated tool for learning and teaching. As a student, I have been through numerous English courses with substandard textbooks. The information within this handbook is valuable and effective for anyone from beginning to advanced writers. Like anything in an imperfect world, the book does have its deficiencies and drawbacks however. Judging from past writing books and what I have learned thus far from this book, it has demonstrated to be the most informative, handy, and efficient. This high praise is due to Keys for Writers's convenient layout, simple maneuverability, constructive teachings, and trouble-free comprehension.
First off, allow me to run through the books few, minor weaknesses. My initial criticism was the spiral binding. I have had the book for merely seven weeks and already pages have begun to tear at the binding. This approach was a poor decision since it weakens the book, which usually goes through a rough life of being tossed, squashed, and bent. Also, there is a lack of pictures. It's understandable that it may be difficult to utilize visuals in an English text, but the primary purpose is to offer an interesting example. This is a very effectual method of keeping the consumer's attention. Another downside, at least from a teacher's standpoint, is the missing exercises and problems. Coming from a student's perspective however, I am not complaining at all! Keys for Writers has minimal flaws, which adds to its credibility as a fine textbook.
The book's traditional arrangement with unique advancements allow for rather uncomplicated navigation. With a flip of the cover, you are encountered by a general directory to what lies ahead. The book is first broken up into two categories: the "Writing Process" and "Sentence-Level Issues". It further divides the text into ten separate sections and specifies the pages of each main idea within the divisions. On the right hand side of the pages there are tabs identifying where each of these sections begins. This is distinctive feature that most books don't have provides for the simple navigation. The book is concluded with an extensive index followed by the table of contents. Conventionally the table of contents is found in the introduction of books, but this poses no threat to this one's worthiness.
The information Ann Raimes poured into her book is extremely practical and beneficial. There is an entire section devoted to teaching the MLA documentation style. She keeps each way of documenting a source short and sweet, but all of them are backed with a helpful example. This section is proceeded by one dedicated to the other types of documentation including APA, CBE, Chicago, and CGOS. What I found most helpful was the tips on evaluating who your audience is and overcoming the notorious writer's block. These are located in the first section which I feel is very necessary. Keys for Writers covers writing critically, essay exams, oral and lab reports, and business letters. It even touches on technological issues including e-mails, web site designs, visuals, and PowerPoint. Additionally, there is a portion that teaches the reader how to perform and evaluate research. This happens to be the first book I have come across to even mention this in detail. And this book has an entire chapter covering it. The majority of the second half of the text contributes the grammar portion. I thought I had learned all there is to know about grammar, but I was proven wrong. Being a somewhat experienced writer I was surprised how I still picked up things that I was unaware of. Furthermore, the glossary is complete and comes in hand often. The language used within the definitions is easy to read which lets you gain a better understanding.
Perhaps the cleverest of the book's construction is the multilingual section or the KeyTabs. Near the end of the text, Ann Raimes put together a piece that is principally aimed at multilingual students. This clears up most difficulties or misunderstandings that foreigners may have with the English language. This was an ingenious move by Raimes as these foreigners usually get overlooked and unaccounted for. The unique KeyTabs are included side notes that the consumer can use to mark a page or make a memo on. They are located in the rear of the book but are removable and can be placed wherever desired due to the binding. This lets one personalize their book and gives a quick reference if needed.
Overall, Keys for Writers establishes itself as a very commendable textbook that provides valuable information for a variety of consumers. From novice to developed writers, this book easily allows the student to learn. It is well worth the forty-five dollars you'll spend on a new edition of it. To teachers - lesson plans will be effortless to develop with the aid of this book and your students will greatly benefit for it. To students - this book will assist you and increase your chances at succeeding in your English course. It is strongly recommended by many others and me to purchase Keys for Writers.
Short Assignment #3.......2003-10-15
Keys for writers written by Ann Raimes, is useful reference book for students and scholars of all ages. Hitting on almost all major points of writing today, this book helps with everything from the documentation, grammar, and style. Being written very recently also allows the reader to use the handbook to research things such as how to site a website, website design, and even an area about online discussions. Raimes also goes into an area about multilingual writers. This is very helpful especially when attending a college that a majority of the people do not use English for their first language. Tips for these people on writing are easy to find and follow. Raimes hits many points throughout the whole book making it one of the best reference books for English that I have seen in a long time.
One of the hardest assignments in any age of schooling today is a research paper. There is a certain format that one must follow and many rules on how exactly to write the paper. This handbook helps students in these areas like research, documentation (both APA and MLA), and also punctuation and mechanics. Particularly on pages 125 through 158 I found great examples of documentation using the MLA format, in all types of ways. It is much easier to see an example written as Raimes has done, then to just be given a format. She even goes through how to document one or more authors, speeches and lectures, and translated books. Some of these things I never even knew existed. Many students, myself included find research very hard sometimes. Sure anyone can go onto the Internet type the main words of your search, but what do you do when 143,000 different references come up and which of these references are acceptable to use? On pages 72 through 120 Raimes gives specific examples of what kind of reference to use and where even to find these references. What makes it even nicer is that she breaks down her sources into subject so you can search quickly and efficiently. Research papers, including the one that I have due in December will be much easier to write with the help of this book.
Many students do not even know what style means when it comes to writing. I would bet that some thing that style only means the type of cloths you wear. Raimes goes into style very thoroughly. She even hits some great points with her table on the "Five C's of Style," on page 249. This table guides a writer with a series of questions to ask yourself before, after, and during the writing of a paper to keep your thoughts in order. Thoughts such as "is my paper wordy or repetitive," "could any of my language offend the reader," and "am I staying connected throughout the whole piece and not jumping from thought to thought without any transitions." These are often points that a writer overlooks and needs go through every time a paper is written. Hitting on the style aspect as well is the sentence structure through out a paper. Many times a writer will use the same word to start each sentence or misuse pronouns and verbs. This problem is helped in the "Common Sentence Problems" and the "Punctuation, Spelling, and Mechanics" areas of the handbook. These two sections go through some basic points and aspects of writing. Just as any other sport or hobby one must master the basics before becoming really good at what they do, and this is what Raimes hits on perfectly. She tells the writer to go with their ideas, but do not forget these basic rules and format that one must follow in the writing of any paper.
Some aspects of the book, not on a structure level that I found to be very good are the price and make up of the book. A book only costing around forty to fifty dollars that is going to get this much use throughout the years of high school, college, and beyond is almost impossible to find these days. I feel that the price was very reasonable and probably was the only book that I purchased the semester without cringing while reaching my hands into my pocket. Also the spiral binding makes it easy for a writer to flip through and keep open on one's desk while writing. The tabs for easy to find aspects and the small make up of the book make it great to carry around in a students backpack without weighing it down. If I had to bring up some negative points of the book I would say that Raimes does not give any exercises for one to practice the skills she is teaching and also a supplemental CD format for the computer would have been helpful. Many students today like to pop in a CD and sit on the computer to go through something. As a whole though I found Raimes' book to be very informative and helpful in my writing process and plan to keep this book very many years to come!
A Gift to Students.......2003-10-15
Ann Raimes has successfully blended grammatical construction, error correction methods, and easy usage into a 6x8 ring-bound writer's handbook. It is fascinating how, in one book, entry level college writers, graduate writers, and even multilingual writers can learn to write with poise, insight and comfort, successfully. Everything from writer's block to punctuation is addressed. In fact, if a writer doesn't know 'how to address,' Keys for Writers addresses that also.
The book begins by detailing the writing process. The most important steps in any successful paper are to:
Define your purpose, Assess your audience, Choose your topic, and
Generate a thesis. Generating a thesis is one of the most important steps. A weak thesis will not define the purpose of the paper, a broad thesis will take away from the main facts. Keys for Writers walks the writer through the processes.
The next section of the text explains the writing procedure. Creating an argument and taking a stand is vital. If an argument is not present the writer may be less formal, writing figurative language, essays, oral reports or poetry. I am a lover of poetry and Keys for Writers really spoke to my passion.
Common errors are remedied in the sentence structuring section. Sentence fragments, run-on sentences, and subject-verb agreement errors are conquered. It is quite helpful for a beginner. Even a graduate, at times, may have trouble.
The book is very careful to address the learning student's needs. It clearly identifies all of the key in the writing process. It also points out the importance of revision. Proofing and revising a paper before submitting it may further remedy and errors. During revision a writer can add any last minute changes, rephrase, and even outline. Outlining the paper may help the student decide if the ideas in the paper flow.
The most amazing fact about Keys for Writers is it's section for multilingual writers. Few other books address these student's needs. Anne Raimes' effort to help each student is commendable. This may even make it possible for multilingual students to engage in learning together at equal levels.
One of the facts that has been pointed out is the cost of the book. Some think that it is too expensive. I do agree to some extent that it is very expensive, but when 'what is learned' is weighed against 'cost' the purpose is obvious. This book is a must have.
Every student should have a copy of Keys for Writers. The book is great for English speaking students, Multilingual students, students unfamiliar with the writing process and even professionals. Ann Raimes has done an excellent job in preparing this resource. The money for the book will be well spent. It is the perfect gift for a student and with Christmas right around the corner the time to buy
is now.
An excellent guide for students when writing documents!!.......2003-10-15
Whether it is for school or work, "Keys for Writers"
holds a lot of invaluable information that can be used for
any writing assignment. I would recommend this book to
anyone that enjoys writing and would like to improve their
writing abilities. Whether it is writing essays, documents,
poems, etc., "Keys for Writers" would be a great help for
anyone. It contains great advice and tips that can help you
get rid of annoying writer's block. "Keys for Writers" is
the first writing textbook that I have actually enjoyed
reading.
This book does not feel like any ordinary textbook
instead, it is more of a reference guide to writing. One
reason why I like this book is because it has a abundance of
information is displayed in a way that is easy to
comprehend. It gives students the ability to research
information without being restricted to large dictionaries
and grammar books. Another good aspect to this book is that
it is, paper back, small, and lighter than most other books
so it can fit into bags without weighing down your shoulders.
The organization of this book was great. The book
begins by talking about the writing process, which is a great
reminder for those who may have forgotten a few things. It
tells the readers what steps are needed in order to create
successful document with less stress. Suggesting helpful
tips on brainstorming and proofreading final drafts help the
writer form a good foundation on which a good paper can be
built.
"Keys for Writers" is divided into two sections each
having their own color. The first section is titled "The
Writing Process- Working with Sentences" represented in red
it is about getting the reader's focused on what they are going
to write about and gathering information on the topic. The
second section coated in orange is titled "Sentence / Level
Issues." This section helps the reader construct the actual
document in a presentable manner with correct structure and
grammatical form. These two sections are divided into "parts"
that break down each section into categories which explain
the purpose and ways to help the reader identify specific
problems they he or she may be experiencing when writing.
Each "part" is divided by labeled tabs which gives reader
easy access to what they are looking for. In the beginning
of each "part," there is a small table of contents that
displays a list of the upcoming topics. Inside readers can
find the page numbers and titles which allows the reader to
have a quick access to what they are looking for with out
having to read unwanted information.
This book also contains information on how to write
many different kinds of documents such as on-line discussions
and even how to create the perfect email. You can get help
with writing resumes, business letters and or learn how to
create a dynamic power point presentation. There are also
short lessons on where the correct place for commas and
semicolons are and when it is or is not appropriate to use
abbreviations. You can also find help when citing sources
using the MLA, APA, CBE, or CGOS styles. Also in the book is
a glossary and index providing further assistance in
clarifying confusing words and similes. There are helpful
Key Tab cards that can assist the reader in taking notes or
used as bookmarks while reading.
Another thing I thought was very helpful was that it
also assistance for bilingual individuals who are learning
English as a second language (ESL). Which includes editing
questions concerning punctuation, sentence structure, verbs,
etc for those who speak Spanish, French, German, and other
languages spoken all around the world.
The language used in this book was very informal. I liked
that it was not as intense as a computer technical manual but
not as relaxed as a Sunday comic strip. It gives the student
what they need to know in a way that is easy for them to
understand. It's very convenient because most students do not
want to have to read extra material that is has a lot of
flowery language just to find out how a citation should look
in your report.
The author did a good job in preparing this book.
The manner in which the information is presented in a unique
style I believe enhances the readers enthusiasm for learning
about writing. It has a casual tone that gives the reader
comfort, unlike other textbooks that use complex language.
Even the spiral design of the book arouses curiosity in what
information it holds. I think "Keys for Writers" will be
very useful to me as a student now and in the future as I
continue to improve my writing abilities. It is very helpful
in answering a variety of questions from grammar to including
citations. It is a great tool for any writer to complete all
writing assignments unlike those books that are designed to
offer assistance with one specific topic.

The Complete Pekingese.......2002-09-21
I was needing a book about the behaviors, training tips, and how to care for my dog. This book is about the breed, where it all started, and the breeding lines. It would be good for someone wanting to show or breed their Pekingese.
Expert advice from the expert.......2000-09-14
I recently (as in a week ago) bought a delightful male Peke puppy named Tai, and we will be going to our first puppy match in a few days. This book has been immeasureably helpful in outlining the show process and I have gleaned much information from its pages. The detailed descriptions of champions of the past was particularly helpful, as I am now quite familiar with many of the kennel names such as Toydom, St. Aubrey-Eldson (where the famous St. Aubrey Dragonora, Westminster BIS winner in 1982, hailed from), and the author's own kennel, Shiarita. I advise anyone who is even thinking of letting this wonderful breed into your lives, to buy this book.
Review of "The Complete Pekingese".......2000-06-23
I am a Pekingese breeder and Ms. Stannard's book lived up to my every expectation. Her writing is clear and concise. The photos of the dogs are well done, especially the grooming photos. This book shows the absolute cream of the crop of English dogs and is not to be missed by any serious Pekingese fancier. The book not only speaks about current top English dogs and kennels, but makes great reference to the great kennels of the past. There is also a chapter on North American dogs. I am sure that this book will find it's way to the bookshelves of most Pekingese breeders.

Pleased with Peke Book.......2005-10-12
This small book does a good job covering many relevant topics about Pekes. I was pleased with the contents and would recommend the book to individuals who are considering on buying a Pekingese. The pictures alone will charm you into making the purchase.
Pekingese: (Complete Pet Owner's Manual).......2003-03-22
This is an excellent book for a first time Pekingese owner!! For someone who knows the breed(and I truly mean knows- I've had my boy for a year and a half and I still learned things), it might not be as helpful. It's easy to read and at times shows a little humor. It covers everything a responsible pet owner should know. It even included first aid techniques in case of emergencys, some basic training steps, grooming, etc. Definately an A+ book written by someone who knows what they're talking about.
Nothing sticks out.......2003-03-10
Yes, this is a pleasant, short, brief book about the Pekingese. However, it's not any different than any other book about the Pekingese breed. The information is very generic, and if you search around personal sites online or just visit breeder's pages, you'll find the same info. At points, I felt like the book became a generic dog care book, giving advice for any breed of dog. It isn't peke-specific enough. For example, they should've had a chart that listed how many calories of food or vitamins pekes need at different life stages and weather. Pekes may be small dogs, but they are heavier and require different nutrition than other breeds. One would expect a book titled "Pekingese" to be tailored to a Peke's needs but the info that is provided for feeding can also be found in a book for any other dog. Do you think a peke needs the same nutrition as a Dalmation? No. It's a good book for those that have never had a dog before, or don't have the slightest clue about the Pekingese. However, if you are already a peke-companion and were looking for helpful peke-specific info, this book doesn't provide info that you don't already know.
Pekingese: Everything about Purchase, Care, Nutrition, Breed.......2002-09-21
I am buying a pekingese and this book is so helpful! I feel more knowledgeable and will be able to purchase with more confidence. I will also be able to get the grooming aids, etc. prior to the puppy coming home.
Breeders - sell this with your puppies!.......2002-06-24
This does what it says and is a good guide for pet owners who have not had a peke before. You could do worse than sell it with each puppy, if you are a responsible breeder.

The #1 book for Civil War relic collectors!.......2004-11-05
Although Warman's Civil War Collectibles book is much less expensive, this is still the best book to have if you collect Civil War relics. Not only does this have in depth sections on non-excavated relics, it also has a great excavated relics section & gives you tips on how to preserve them properly. It also has a great section on veterans' items from the GAR & the UCV. Plus, it has a brief but helpful section on the most popular Revolutionary War relics including belt plates, buttons, bayonets, swords, & muskets. It has great photos of artifacts & even gives you tips on how to display your collection with creativity. Usually a new updated edition of this book is published every two-three years because as Civil War relic collectors know the values are ever-increasing. I own both this & the Warman's book & I highly recommend both for collectors.

Customer Reviews:
Needs to be organized by month, not by plant type.......2007-08-24
I really like the information in this book. However instead of being organized by Month as the title suggests, It is organized by Plant type (perennial, annual, etc.) I find it time consuming and frustrating to have to continually flip from one section to another just to find out what to do for a specific month.
very helpful!.......2006-05-07
This book is the perfect tool for me, as I'm always wondering what I should be doing when to get the best results. It's unique in the way it's written and I don't believe it's meant to be your only resource for gardening information. It's very good at what it does and I actually like the way it's broken down, it works well for me.
Needs to be reorganized.......2006-04-11
I like the idea behind this book a lot. It has a lot of good tips, but it needs to be reorganized. There are January - December sections for annuals, perennials, bulbs, etc. I don't like having to have to go to several different sections for each month. It would be a nicer book if it was better organized.
Very helpful to Mid-Atlantic "newbie".......2005-09-25
I just moved to Maryland from a quite different climate and was unsure how to deal with the changing seasons in this part of the country. It's very helpful to be able to look under a particular month and plant type and figure out what I'm supposed to be doing this time of year. Should I still be pruning my flowers? Is it okay to plant ANYTHING this time of year? What about preparing my garden for the winter? How do I deal with humid summers? My new home has a long-untended yard and garden, so I will pretty much be starting from scratch, and it's great to have some idea what can be planted, when it can be planted, and how to care for it.
Poorly-indexed and frustrating to use.......2005-04-29
At first glance, the book seems to be nicely organized, with month-by-month information for various types of plants/tasks. However, finding information about a particular plant can be frustrating, as the index is inadequate, and not detailed enough. For example, the index for azaleas contains a list of 27 different page numbers, which are not sub-indexed. This group of 27 pages actually covers a large section of azaleas as houseplants, and azaleas as shrubs. It would have been easier to find the information I was looking for if the index had listed "azaleas: houseplants" and then "azaleas: shrubs". Other plants suffer similar indexing fates.
Another gripe is the lack of any easily found index information for pests or for weeds. I recently moved from the West coast, and have found that most of the pests and weeds are completely different. In fact, I have no idea what a "chinch bug" looks like, and this book leaves me in complete ignorance. The book mentions a chinch bug several times, but nowhere is there a picture, nor can I find chinch bug in the index.
Likewise, I cannot find a picture of, for example, nutgrass. Nutgrass is mentioned a few times, but alas, this book fails to help me learn how to identify it.
Overall, I am truly sorry that I spent money on this book.
Book Description

Customer Reviews:
Martin is a great guy and typographer.......2003-02-20
I have Martin's class this semester. Great guy and teacher, he is very good at explaining typography in a vivid, easy to absorb way. He is very open to new things unlike the other old school typographer. He can give one simple piece of advice and make your design stronger.I read this book briefly before this semester, I could not stop until I had to leave my friend's house. Most typography books I have come across are very arrogant and trying to be sophisticated. Martin's book is very down to earth and inspiring. There are some assignments at the end of the book. They are simply fun to do... A must have for beginners(I wished this was my first typography book) to advance typographers. The only thing is that this book is in black and white... some colors would be nice
A solid book on the esoteric practicalities of type & design.......2000-04-04
Lot of good material here on all aspects of design, focused in on the broad subject of typographic design. A must for any dedicated typographer or designer.
