An Excellent Addition to the Field.......2000-04-24

We have long needed this book. Historically, most texts have either concentrated on describing the natural history of venomous organisms or the medical implactions of envemonations (a noteable exception is the excellent contributions by Halstead). This book provides a great deal of biological informtion about toxic marine organisms and then combines this with the latest information about medical treatments for envenomations. In addition, this book also contains an excellent reveiw and classification for cnidae, which I have personally been looking for for a while. I honestly can't say enough about this text. Although this book is not really for the layman (you won't find much in the way of popularized accounts of injuries), it is an EXCELLENT text for specialists.

A Must Read!.......2007-08-01

This book is definitely a must-read for everyone, martial artist or not. It reads fairly quickly, and is one you'll want to read again. Each of the '42...secrets' are life-lessons. They give you insight into the time when Samurai lived, and explains how the lesson applied then and how it applies now. We all have something to learn from their code of Honor, and this book can help everyone.

THE BOOK of FIVE RINGS (Go Rin No Sho) - Summarised!!

I really can not emphasise enough how BRILLIANT this version of The Book of Five Rings is. Most other translations of "Miyamoto Musashi's" book are long and hard to understand, or more precisely, you can read it, understand the words easily enough, but the meaning and the important LIFE saving lessons don't come though very well......

......but this book by Boye De Lafayette Mente is just so well written and laid out. He breaks down all the lessons from "Musashi" into small chapters. Once you've read the book a couple of times all you need to do is just look at the chapter headings for a quick refresher & apply these skills to your life.

THIS IS NOT JUST A BOOK FOR BUDO or MARTIAL ARTISTS!! It's for everyone. Musashi devoted & sacrificed his whole life into discovering how we should live successfully & conduct ourselves. He was the very best swordsman in Japan of his time, never once was he defeated (or even cut). This was all down to his unique approach to his fighting, from the lessons he learnt during duals he was asked at the end of his life to summarise and tell the world how he became so successful.

This really is a cracking book. It takes the "The Book of Five Rings by Miyamoto Musashi" and summarises it (in plain easy to read & understandable English) into 42 easy to follow and understandable chapters & steps.

It can be easily read in a day or two, but its best if it's RE-READ a couple of times at least 'though. It gets straight to the point. Each chapter is dealt with in just a page or three.

Apply these important principles to your life and work, as well as to your chosen Martial Art. Samurai Secrets may have been a better title perhaps?

Do look out for Boye Lafayette de Mente's other titles. His style of writing is very easy going and precise. He makes the subject matter easy to absorb and understand.

For example try "The Japanese Samurai Code" and Enjoy!! If you buy the actual translation of "The Book of Five Rings" then Thomas Cleary's version I think is the best. I say this as there are many translations of the same book and most are in the old classical direct translation style and not easy (for me anyway) to digest.

I really am so surprised that there are no other reviews raving about this translation of this version of the Book of Five Rings.

I am very glad to have found this book.

My first encounter with the life story of Miyamoto Musashi, Japan's most renowned combat strategist, was in the early 80's when I started to work for a large heavy & construction equipment conglomerate, which dealt primaily with Japanese principals & their products. For the first time in my life, I was introduced to Japanese management culture, & the first 'Japanese' book I read was 'The Book of Five Rings', translated by a Victor Harris, a mechanical engineer like me.

Coming back to today: The author of this particular book is quite right. Miyamoto Musashi's original work was written for samurai warriors who are steeped into Buddhlist & Shinto precepts, in the code of the samurai, in the long traditions of the samurai, & in allusions that were part of the culture of the times. Like Japanese artists who leave it up to readers to complete their work, Miyamoto Musashi left it up to readers of his work to fill in the details of his allusions & advice from their own store of knowledge.

Henceforth, it wasn't easy for me to read 'The Book of Five Rings.' It took me quite a while to figure out the essence, digest the work & eventually managed to distill about ten strategies which I could understand & apply in my own sphere of work.

In this particular book, the author has attempted to identify & explain, in plain English, the philosophy, the strategy, & the ways of winning that Miyamoto Musashi sought to pass on to his disciples. The original work is about how to fight duels to the death & win! The author has made the fighting principles equally applicable to winning in business, & in virtually all other endeavours. In fact, he has elegantly distilled them all down to 42 strategies (compared to my original ten strategies)!!!

The author's writing is almost straight-talk, & in easy-to-understand language. I would even recommend all teens to read it in order to achieve a quick headstart in life, as the 42 strategies are also applicable in studies & in sports.

Interestingly, the Book of Five Rings is, in Miyamoto Musashi's own words, "a guide for men who want to learn strategy."

In life, eveything is possible. It is just a question of strategy.

On the whole, this is excellent work. It therefore deserves a rating of 5 from me.

I bought this along with 'Together for Life' and this had quite a bit to it, a lot of preaching, alot of reading (which I didn't have time for). If you want to simplify things and choose what exactly you want for your wedding while getting the basic beliefs and correct procedures, get 'Together for Life' That is all you would need.

Great book for wedding and marriage prep.......2005-04-23

My wife and i both found this to be a wonderful resource in both planning and contemplating marriage. Fr.Aridas speaks truthfully on Church teaching. This isn't a happy go lucky just have fun kind of book, but serious preparation...including at the spiritual level. Faithful Catholics will be pleased and impressed. Cafeteria Catholics will find they are not catered too, as they are by, unfortunately, many parish priests. Not for the faint of heart or weak of faith.

felt like the author was preaching to me.......2002-11-05

I don't think it was the author's intention at all, but the whole time I read the book I felt like he was preaching to me. The unwelcoming tone of the book really turned me off from the start, but to give it a chance I actually read it all the way through. Now I think that was a waste of time.

Fortunately, I also ordered "The Catholic Wedding Book" by Molly "K. Stein and William C. Graham at the same time. I highly recommend "The Catholic Wedding Book" over Your Catholic Wedding. "The Catholic Wedding Book" has the same (and some better) information, and it's written in a respectful yet amusing way. Both books describe the parts of the Catholic Nuptual Mass, and both have reading, psalm, and music suggestions. The information in Your Cathoic Wedding is also in "The Catholic Wedding Book." The latter also had extra useful information. If you only buy one book on Catholic weddings, buy "The Catholic Wedding Book" by Molly K. Stein and William C. Graham.

The best wedding planning resource I've purchased so far.......2002-01-23

As a new Catholic who just came into the church in the past year and had only seen two Catholic weddings in her life, attempting to plan an entire Catholic wedding mass seemed to be a daunting task. I purchased this book in the hope that it would guide me through the unfamiliar territory of planning and customizing the mass, and I was by no means disappointed. This book was everything I had hoped for and more. The book presents all of the available prayers, blessings, readings, and vows to choose from, discusses ways in which couples can incorporate friends and family into the liturgy, includes worksheets to record the liturgical and musical choices a couple makes, and briefly discusses the meaning and import of the Sacrament of Marriage. Also, in addition to printing the Scriptural passages available for use in the mass liturgy, the author expands upon each passage and describes how the Scripture message pertains to marriage and what the couple should take away from the passage. Although a couple would only use a select few of the available options in their mass, reading the author's discussions of each passage can serve as excellent marriage preparation. Other basic wedding planning tools are included as well, such as a timeline for task completion and space to record important names and phone numbers. This is by far the best wedding planning resource I have purchased thus far, and I highly recommend this book to any Catholic couple preparing to plan their wedding mass (especially new Catholics who are relatively unfamiliar with the mass liturgy!).

The detail that this book gives you on how to do deatils and go about preparing your special day is remarkable. They even have New and Old traditions that will help you and and your special someone plan that perfect day. "Cartooning with Math" is a fun book that makes it so simple to draw cartoons that my 6-year-old can do it. Also, it helps to teach and reinforce many math skills. Even if your child is very young, he or she can do all of the cartoons in the book. Children do not need to have mathematical skills to do the drawings, but they will definitely look at math in a new way after doing the drawings in the book. Older children will also love this book because it shows them easy ways to draw cool cartoon characters.

I love books, but this one I may burn as kindling. I own a bunch of flower essence books, including several flower essences + animals. I've owned this book for years and it was a waste of money. Not helpful AT ALL! Full of fluff. Don't pay more than $5. One star is too many, but Amazon won't let a person choose 0 stars.

A must have book for pet owners!.......2002-01-11

This book is a must have! I learned more about my cats in Lila's book than I did in all my years living with them. Her approach to explaining remedies that will help our pets is done in such a loving manner. Even if you don't have a pet now, this book will guide you in being a responsible pet owner when you do adopt a pet. I have found her remedies and flower/fruit essences to be very helpful in managing the health of my cats. The advice works!!

Wonderful Guiding Wisdom for Our Pets.......2001-02-12

I had found flower essences to be an extremely useful method for myself and other humans to heal some of worries and fears of everyday life, so I turned to Ms. Devi's book with great anticipation for how I might also improve my relationship with my pets ( 1 dog, 4 cats) and how the flower essences might improve their relationships with each other and feel better about themselves. Ms. Devi gives much guiding wisdom for better understanding the living situation from the pet's perspective, and how the flower essences can most help each pet according to their individual personalities and needs. I have seen my relationship with my pets grow even more meaningful and can attest to the fact that if you attend to their emotional needs, in addition to their physical needs, you will be rewarded with the tremendous well of unconditional love which our pets have available for us. I especially like the index of personality traits and symptoms at the end of the book - very helpful for those "quick-need" situations.

Cartridge Collectors Guide.......2004-01-30

I am writing this more from a cartridge collectors viewpoint than as a Winchester Shotgun collector. Ron's discussion and history of Winchester Shotgun Shells is invaluable. If you are interested in Winchester and in the part Winchester played in the deveoplment of the shotgun and it's ammunition, this is a great book. There are pictures of some very scarce to rare shotgun shells in the book.

this book is a photo rich account of winchester shotguns produced during the classic pre-64 era, and as such it fills a hole in the winchester firearms library. this volume is full of photographs and gives good information. i have found it to be my "go to" book on winchester shotgun information. i do wish it had a little more text though which is why i rated it 4 out of 5 stars. still i highly reccomend this book to winchester shotgun enthusiasts.

Well laid out informative book.......2007-01-19

Very pleased with this book, it covers many aspects of stonework. Nice photos, lots of step by step projects with stone such as paths, walls, steps, waterfalls, pools, etc. Good early section on types of stone and the tools needed to work with stone.

Decent introduction to stonework, but better books available.......2005-04-03

This is a decent book for the novice to overcome any initial trepidation about building drystone features. It is well illustrated, and comprehensive enough to get you started. However, with a few exceptions, the stonework illustrated is of average quality. For a true photo reference on the art of drystone, I would recommend Dan Snow's "In the Company of Stone" over Reed's book any day. Combine it with John Vivians "Building Stone Walls", and you will have everything you need to enter the world of drystone work: quality pictures of excellent stonework for reference, and solid, no nonesense text to guide you.

Beautiful book with detailed how-to info.......2005-03-20

This book is full of beautiful photos and ideas for stonescaping. It includes stone paths, patios, steps, retaining walls, and even how to make an impressive stone waterfall. However, it's not only the wonderful photography that makes this book great, but it also includes information about how to accomplish these things. I would have to say this is a great "how-to" book that disguises itself as a beautiful coffee table book.

Stonescape.......2003-04-25

A good book for anyone interested in landscaping their yard with dry stacked stones. It teaches you much more than just making retaining walls. Learn how to make paths, steps, benches, pools, and how to integrate plants into the stonework. It could have used some more photos of finished projects, but overall it should be enough to help you finish any stonescaping project you take on.

Great idea and how-to book.......2002-11-29

When I started a stone-project at our farm in the Catskills -- re-cycling some old, fallen-down stone walls into a new retaining wall -- I bought a half-dozen books, including David Reed's Stonescaping. Although Reed's book was not the best one for my particular project, as a good how-to book, it is very good and as an idea book, it is excellent.

On the plus side, Reed provides details and plenty of full-color pictures for everything from tools to stone varieties to uses for stone. He expands far beyond free-standing and retaining walls to benches, paving stones, terraces and even sculpture. After reading this book, I realized that I can use the stone I have at hand in quite a few ways besides walls.

The main negative is the book is just too pretty to drag outdoor where I'm working. Of course, the easy solution to that is to photocopy the appropriate pages and take them to my worksite.
