Must have..........2006-03-16
This is a must have for any Razorback fan. Guz simplifies this complex system. This book shows you how to truly control the game by setting an almost unbelievable pace, lengthening the game, and just good strategy.
No Huddle Review.......2006-02-25
The book is very informative. It has help me game plan for implementing the No Huddle Offense at my school. I am glad I was able to find something to help me.

Great Book.......2006-03-27
I purchased this book for my private collection, and I am not sorry I did. It is easy to read. It has lots of diagrams that are easy to follow and full of information that can be used at any coaching level. If you want to know more about the no huddle offense this is the book for you.
This book will help your team win........2000-06-12
Mark McElroy covers every aspect of how to practice and implement the no-huddle offense to allow your offense to control the game. Since reading this book and implementing the no-huddle offense my teams have lost only two games in three seasons and are currently on a 10 game winning streak.
The first chapter explains the benefits of running a no-huddle offense. The number one reason is that you can control the pace of the game. You can actually run a no-huddle slow down offense to bleed the clock when you have a significant lead or hurry up to move the ball quickly when you are behind and need to score.
Mark McElroy gives several different examples of how to communicate the no-huddle signals to your players including dummy siganls to through off your opponents when they try to steal your signals.
The communication system is very simple yet it appears to be complicated to your opponents. The chapter on practicing the no-huddle is the best. It explains how using the no-huddle system in practice actually allows you to get more done in less time and increases your team confidence when you are in a situation where you must run a hurry-up offense.
Game Planning and Trouble shooting chapters are extremely useful to the success of the no-huddle system.
This book is an excellent value.

Book Description
An indispensable tool for acquiring basic communication skills in a limited amount of time.
With Japanese Sentence Patterns for Effective Communication, even absolute beginners can learn to communicate in Japanese in a matter of days. Designed specifically for native-English speakers approaching Japanese as a second language, this book presents 142 essential Japanese sentence patterns,
first by giving equivalents in English, then following with Japanese translations. Each pattern is accompanied by a concise, easy-to-follow explanation and several Japanese example sentences that demonstrate its usage. In addition, practice sections for each pattern allow the student to test his or
her understanding of the material presented.
Japanese Sentence Patterns for Effective Communication is organized into twelve chapters according to communicative function, including such tasks as making simple, declarative statements about people and things in the world; making comparisons; talking about events in the past, present and future;
expressing desire, conjecture and intention;
stating causes or reasons; making requests; asking and giving permission; and using the passive and causative-passive voices. Extensive charts at the back of the book outline the rules for inflecting and conjugating adjectives and verbs-essential to fluent communication.

japanese swan.......2007-09-05
The basic expressions appear in English and represent ideas or patterns to be expressed in Japanese. They are arranged from easiest tý most difficult. Each has a Japanese translation, highlighting the pattern to be learned then pattern is explained with example sentences. A big leap for novice birds to get wings for advanced flyings. Enthusiastically recommended. Hotondo kanzen ni (almost perfect).
Complete enough to be your 1st standalone introduction to Nihongo .......2007-04-25
This little gem packs in a lot of information. The sentences are written in kanji, romaji and English and the typeface and layout are easy on the eyes. I only know 300 kanji and this is a great way to review the old ones in context as well as learn new ones. Im using this (in addition to JAPANESE STEP BY STEP and GENKI) to prepare for my 1st college level Japanese class and Im happy with it.
Great Book!!!.......2007-02-17
This book gives examples of sentence structures in every shape and form. Its useful for looking up structures for speaking and writing. One thing that I must point out; it contains a lot of Kanji without furigana. But don't be afraid because all examples are also written in romanji. Another point that I'd like to stress to any beginner is that you MUST learn the Kana's very early in your studies. Also, every book, dictionary, workbook, or program that you are interested in assumes that you have a solid grasp on English Grammar. When I say English Grammar, I'm not talking about your conversation skills; I'm talking about the elements of the English language. Do you know the difference between a transistive and intransistive verb? Or what about nouns, pronouns, adverbs, adjectives, subjects, objects, synonym's, or antonym,s? I couldn't remember all that junk from school so I had to buy a little grammar book to learn English before I could really begin Japanese. Oh well, to make a long story short; get this book because it really helps. It's easy to read, has lots of practice excersises and has tons of info in the back. Have Fun Gang!!!
A wonderful yet concise book for beginners and intermediate students.......2007-01-03
This is an excelent book. Having gone through a course in elementary Japanese, I wanted a book to quickly review the basic grammar and speech patterns. This little book does a marvelous job. It explains all the main patterns concisely, yet sufficiently. The organization and clarity of the book are its main assets. There is a detailed index at the beginning of the book, containing key examples of the pattern. That way you can jump right to the page you need. At the end of the book there are handy appendices (with examples) on counters (some 25 of them), plus charts on adjective inflections and verb conjugations. All in alphabetical english order. Every pattern, or variation, is clearly explained with 3 examples. This is followed by 3 more examples for you to try. Then, the answers are given in smaller print. All examples are given in Japanese characters plus romaji transliteration. Every unit has a few new words of vocabulary, which are then used in the examples that follow. I admired the economy of this book. Nothing is superfluous. And yet, everything is sufficient, within the constraints of its size. It is published by Kodansha International, not Oxford University Press as the Amazon description says. Very few books on Japanese language instruction are suitable for self study. This one clearly is.
Excellent........2006-06-21
Out of necessity, much of this is a copy of my other review because it is a direct contrast.
Since a search that brought up this book probably also brought up A Dictionary of Basic Japanese Sentence Patterns (Kodansha Dictionary) (same publisher) and at first glance one might be tempted to just buy whichever is cheapest at the time. It's worth noting that they are very different books.
A Dictionary... is indexed for a reader that encounters a strange construction. It is formatted in a way to facilitate looking-up strange new sentences. Japanese Sentence Patterns is indexed for someone that wants to say something in Japanese.
Thus, If you want to tell someone in Japanese that one thing would be better to do than another, Japanese Sentence Patterns will tell you how to say it. On the other hand, if you see or hear "Yukkuri tabeta hou ga kenkou ni ii yo." Then A dictionary... is better for figuring out what the person meant.
In all, both books are very much worth getting. Both serve completely different needs, they are definitely not duplicates of the same book. I do consider this one a bit more useful than the other, it is certainly easier to use. Even a complete novice can use this to create sentences. The exercises help cement new knowledge and the use of kanji can reinforce an intermediate student's reading ability.

Book Description
Ever wonder what makes your furry four-legged pooch sit when you say "Come?" Or has "Little Rover" ever used your expensive shoes for chew toys?
"When you improve your leadership skills as a dog owner, you can create one of life's most rewarding experiences: being best friends with a good dog," writes veteran dog trainer Breon O'Farrell in this lushly photographed book chock-full of wit and wisdom. Mixed with charm, experience, and anecdotal stories, Philosophy Dog is a beautiful gift book for new dog owners and long-time dog enthusiasts alike.
O'Farrell's enthusiasm for harmonious bonding with your dog is contagious. Sixty of the world's leading fashion photographers, who subscribe to his wisdom, have contributed images of their furry best friends for this extraordinary collection.
Contributing Photographers:
Bruce Weber, Steven Meisel, Patrick Demarchelier, Herb Ritts, Ellen Von Unwerth, Annie Leibovitz, Mary Ellen Mark, and many others have joined O'Farrell in creating what he calls "the most beautiful, useful dog book."
Customer Reviews:
Philosophy Dog by Breon O'Farrell.......2006-08-25
If you love dogs, you will love this book. It is a beautiful book with 70 wonderful photographs of well loved dogs. It is also charmingly written with both training lessons and personal vignettes, making it a delightful experience to read. The author obviously loves dogs, people, children and life. The "philosophy" is his -- how to enjoy your pet to the max, how to train it so that others will love it also. Not only will you want this book at your fingertips forever, you will want to give it as a gift to anyone you know who has a beloved dog in their life.
Disclosure: I'm the author's mom, but I try to be objective.
Didn't see the point.......2002-12-07
The photos ARE really pretty (I liked them a lot), but as far as training goes, there was really no point in buying this book. I was actually surprised to see listed here on this page that the author himself doesn't even use these methods to teach his own clients. I'm not surprised he doesn't use them (they are vague and can be pretty destructive to the dog/owner relationship if not truly understood properly), I guess I'm just startled to see that he admitted it.
I am not by any means a novice dog owner, nor am I a first time trainer (my own dogs having achieved decent levels in obedience competitions), but the training advice in the book barely even made sense.
If you want a nice book with pretty pictures, get this book. If you want a book with decent training advice or a comprehensive discussion on the nature of dogs and how they learn I would suggest another. There really isn't even much here about the philosophy of dogs (or dog learning theory) that hasn't been at least partially debunked within the last two decades, I'm sorry to say.
I am the author.......2002-04-24
Philosophy Dog was meant to be a solution to the ever increasing problem of ugly dog training books. So many of them are either so cute and sweet that diabetics can't risk handling them, or so scientific and boring that it is abandoned during chapter two and is sentenced to the shelf for a life term. On one point there is no arguement: PD is the most beautiful dog training book ever printed. The contributing photographers make up a virtual who's who of world class artists. But they are not only the biggest and most famous names in the world, they are also dog lovers, and this really shows in their work. They are to be congratulated for donating their remarkable talents to this book.
The publisher is also a household name in the fancy pants art world. Rizzoli/Universe specializes in art, photography, architecture, coffe table books and high end collectables. They used the highest quality materials in producing this book, even though the subject matter is generally considered less than worthy. Not to me of course. And not to the dog loving photographers. And not to you who are interested enough to read this review. A combination art book and training book is a unique idea that my publisher was able to appreciate because of the involvment of the many famous photographers.
It may be true that PD is not the most detailed training manuel. It is not a scientific paper. I like to think of it as the lazy man's guide to creating a good relationship with a dog. It is a book about how to lead "dogs", even though we all know that dogs are individuals and require a personal approach. I prefer to have my dog training clients use a clicker for teaching commands and tricks, but even in this case the pet owner is going to need leadership skills with the their dog. Since many people have difficulty committing to the clicker, I decided to write a book about leadership so everyone could benefit from, and enjoy it.
Everyone who has seen my book has loved it. All of us can use a little push towards becoming better leaders especially if that effort will also enhance our lives in other ways. Buy my book. I guarantee you will be not be dissapointed. Enjoy, Breon O'Farrell
Very Entertaining/Informative -- but my dogs say no way!!.......2002-01-05
O'Farrell has put together some helpful advice surrounded by interesting tales and great pictures. He provides wonderful insight into the man/dog relationship, but sometimes loses sight of the fact that it's now quite as simple as he makes it sound.
No doubt that this a far more interesting read than most "dog" books, but don't expect it to be the ultimate training guide...
By the way, if anyone knows how to train two strong willed GSDs...
Book Description
This opulent volume examines the individual qualities of porcelain and bone china and the important roles they played both within and outside the industrial domain—for potters, ceramicists, students, collectors, and enthusiasts alike, with 275 color photos.

Porcelain and Bone China.......2007-06-08
I love this book information is very relevant, clear and concise writing and I love the photos very inspiring!
Good information.......2005-09-03
This book has great information for clay artists who are interrested in expanding their abilities with porcelain & bone china. Firing schedules, clay & glaze recepies, working methods all explained in great detail.
Customer Reviews:
Specific to Cauldon, Inc........2006-11-27
This is the finest book available on Cauldon, bar none. The pricing guides are helpful, the background information facinating, and although the photographs are sometimes a little out of focus, each page features multiple images of representative wares.
Cauldon for Collectors.......2006-04-22
Quite simply the best reference work currently available on the output of Cauldon Ltd. and its predecessors and sucessors for over a century including helpful pricing guides. Because Cauldon's tableware patterns alone ran to several tens of thousands, this book could not be expected to address individually all of the company's products, but it does cover a broad enough sampling to make it the definitive work on its subject matter. Kudos to Robert Cluett for giving us this book.
Book Description
During the last quarter of the nineteenth century, American potters were struggling to produce quality ceramics to rival that of the English and French. Knowles, Taylor & Knowles took up the challenge, determined to produce a bone china that would be the pride of America. Highly regarded in its day, Knowles, Taylor & Knowles made Belleek Ware, Lotus Ware, and China Whiskey Jugs which are prized possessions among collectors today. Here is a book to inspire dealers and collectors alike. Valuable information concerning the identification of the various wares, the manufacturer's marks, decorative techniques, artists and the current values is included. Each phase of the company's production is illustrated in 245 color photographs.
Customer Reviews:
A nice addition to a collectors library on KTK pottery..........2000-04-01
This book is an excellent adjunct to the more commonly seenMary Frank Gaston's Encyclopedia. Kearn's book contains over 150photos of Knowles, Taylor, Knowles pottery, with a strong focus on the famous Lotus Ware (sometimes referred to as American Belleek), and Meredith and other jugs.
Kearns went straight to the source, the Ohio Ceramics Museum in East Liverpool, Ohio, for information about this pottery's wares. He gives us a history of the company and the different types of pottery it created when it ran, and tonnes of photos of the various pieces still available to the collector today. His prices do not reflect the impact that online auctions have had on the collectables market, but that is a common problem with reference works today, and should not deter you from buying this book.
Book Description
Encyclopedic in its range of information, this single volume contains everything you need to know to create a breathtaking perennial garden. Hodgson thoughtfully covers site selection, starting a garden, garden pests, and diseases and gives the lowdown on more than 700 perennials. As he says, 'Some give you great value for your money, some are weeds, and some need special care.' Plants are organized by attribute, from bloom time or light needs to low-care and no-care categories. Each plant description includes vital statistics, a list of the problems and solutions specific to that plant, suggested 'neighbors,' recommended cultivars, plus a color photograph showing both bloom and foliage. Learn how to plan your dream garden and follow the 10 commandments of perennial design to avoid the most common pitfalls of perennial gardening. If you are overwhelmed or intimidated by the choices, simply select one of Hodgson's lovely no-fail designs, such as an entry garden, a shady foliage garden, or even a layer cake garden.
Customer Reviews:
Just not long enough!.......2007-05-10
There just isn't anything to dislike about this book or it's author.
The book contains a vast spectrum of useful information for the novice & veteran gardener alike. Mr. Hodgson is very transparent on his views about 100's of perennials & specific cultivars. He doesn't paint a pretty picture when there's not one to paint. He's honest & up front about the woes of various plants & the nightmares they can haunt us unsuspecting gardeners with. He also shares a wealth of positive examples about those that are a great pleasure to grow in any garden & encourages the reader to find a place in our yard for those special ones.
The authors down to earth approach is a pleasure to experience & he certainly has a gift for sharing his many years of travels around the world & testing thousands of plants.
This is the kind of book that should be in every gardeners library as this kind of information is altogether valuable & beneficial at all levels.
My only disappointment with this book...was that it wasn't much longer to include another few thousand perennials & the authors advice on them.
The author has so much to impart...the reader will be delighted in their purchase of this book. A wise investment indeed!!!!
Great book for Beginner Gardeners.......2007-02-03
I'm a Master Gardener who bought this book for my newly married 26 year old daughter who is planning her first garden. This book has great pictures of PLANTS--not just the flowers on them--as well as garden plans for small doable gardens--9 x 7--as well as larger undertakings. The descriptions of each plant are well done and the book is fun to browse. Good investment for any gardener!
Terrific reference.......2006-05-23
A great reference that I turn to time and time again. And frequently peruse leisurely at bedtime. Especially nice for wintertime dreaming of next season's garden!
There are only a few paragraphs per plant (facing pages, large-ish print), plus a table; but the info is presented concisely enough that I get what I need most of the time. If not, I move on to other resources.
Author's style is very readable, pleasant and good-natured.
The only downside is that more photos would have made a better reference (although probably a more expensive one). One picture -- which could be a flower close-up or a wider shot -- really isn't sufficient if the reader is not familiar with the plant.
Oh, and too often the table information will say "varies by species" (or "cultivar") for entries like size, etc. I think that could have been handled better.
But having said those things, I have to reiterate that I love this book (and its partner, "Annuals for Every Purpose"). So much so that I felt compelled to write this review/recommendation when the title crossed my browsing path... and despite shopping at Amazon for years, I've never done so before.
Enjoy and happy gardening!
Excellent guide for choosing perennials.......2005-04-19
If you are confused and overwhelmed by the large number of perennials available to you, then you might want to take this book along with you on your next trip to the nursery.
The first part of the book covers the basics such as getting started, creating a design, growing perennials and keeping them healthy. The last section of the book profiles perennials that can be used in specific situations, such as dry, wet, sunny or shady areas. Each plant profile includes a photograph, a sidebar listing plant characteristics, and suggestions for companion plantings. Also, the top varities for each plant are listed. Seven garden designs are included if you don't want to design your garden yourself. A very informative and helpful book!
Features plants with handy at-a-glance plant profiles.......2003-12-13
There are perennials for virtually any purpose in the garden, and Larry Hodgson's Perennials For Every Purpose features plants with handy at-a-glance plant profiles to help choose the right ones for garden conditions and taste. Color photos accompany details especially valuable in including common problems and solutions to gardening. The sidebar plant profiles offer very quick details on their use and growing tips.
Book Description
In Annuals for Every Purpose, popular garden writer Larry Hodgson delivers hands-on advice and no-holds-barred descriptions to guide readers through choosing and caring for plants. What sets this comprehensive primer apart from other guides to annuals is its unique organization. Instead of a standard A-to-Z listing, Annuals for Every Purpose features plant profiles-each an attractive two-page spread-grouped by characteristics that -really matter to gardeners, such as shade tolerance; attractiveness to bees, butterflies, and birds; and adaptability to challenging climates. Each entry highlights a Top Performing Plant and lists recommendations for several other plants, for a total of almost 500. In addition to explaining the basic how-to's, Hodgson shares tips and tricks for combining plants with a variety of texture, color, and size. With four stunning garden designs and Hodgson's own 'Ten Commandments of Annual Design,' Annuals for Every Purpose promises to be just as popular as its predeces sor. LARRY HODGSON is a regular contributor to national garden magazines such as Horticulture, Fine Gardening, and Canadian Gardening. He speaks frequently to gardening groups throughout Canada and the United States and is a frequent guest on radio and television. He also leads international garden tours. Hodgson lives in Sainte-Foy, Quebec, just outside of Quebec City.
Customer Reviews:
All About Annuals.......2003-06-11
Some gardeners tend to look down their nose at annuals. I've seen T-shirts with the saying "Friends don't let friends buy annuals". Planting annuals sometimes seems like owning a mongrel dog on a street where all the other dogs have pedigrees. Well, I have a mongrel dog and I plant annuals, so I was happy to see Larry Hodgson's detailed and careful book "Annuals for Every Purpose".
Annuals are those wonderful little plants that bloom their little hearts out every growing season, being humbly content to be poked into what otherwise would be a bald spot in your garden. Still, I think many writers would think it below their dignity to produce a book about them. Larry hodgson, however, a well-known garden writer and lecturer, has produced a knowledgeable and down-to-earht book on the topic. It's one of quite a long list of books he has written, and sister to "Perennials for Every Purpose". Like that book this is very readable for the novice, but quite detailed enough for the more experienced gardener.
Hodgson is an old hand at presenting gardening information and this shows in the competent way he organizes his material. The first part is titled "Annual Gardening Made Easy" and it covers all you need to know from preparing the site to designing with annuals and keeping them alive.
The second part helps you choose the best annuals for your purpose or needs. You look at the Table of Contents to select the purpose - drought-reistant perhaps, or giants for the back of the garden - then look through that section to select the annual you think will do best. To help with your decision the writer lists basic information such as height, spread and hardiness for each species, and gives you growing tips, lists pests and diseases andgives you some recommended varieties and ideas for neighbouring plants.
Annuals for Every Purpose has a source list and a list of recommended reading. Kudos to Rodale for publishing a beautifully illustrated and informative book on this topic.
A Must Have for a New Gardener.......2002-05-04
As a novice gardener, I have found this book to be an invaluable resource. When I'm not studying it at home and planning my next flower bed, it is in my tote bag going to the local nurseries with me. When I find a flower I like, I look it up to get more details and find recommended companion plants.
Although I've not found the plants to be nearly as available in my nurseries here in the Atlanta area (I've had a little more success with mail ordering a few), there are still some great features to his book.
My two favorite features are:
Organized by Plant Type - The book is organized into sections such as General Purposes, Drought Tolerant, Flowers for Containers, Foliage for Containers, etc. It has helped me as a new gardener focus in on plants that fit my need rather than reading about all plants and determining what's right.
Good Neighbors - This is probably my most used section. For every plant, there is a "Good Neighbors" section. In this section, Larry lists several plants that would do well with the plant being described. Especially for a novice gardener, this section is great to help choose a plant that is not only going to look good alone but gives you some companion suggestions to put together that gorgeous bed or container.
ANNUALS FOR EVERY PURPOSE.......2002-04-26
WHILE I LOVED HODGSON'S PERENNIALS FOR EVERY PURPOSE, I FIND THE ANNUALS FOR EVERY PURPOSE BOOK A LITTLE LESS HELPFUL, BUT WOULD STILL RATE IT A 3.5-4. THERE ARE LOTS OF PICTURES OF THE ANNUALS, BUT MOST OF THEM ARE CLOSE UPS...SOME OF THE CLOSE UP PICTURES YOU LOOK AT AND SAY "WHILE I KNOW THAT IS THE CORRECT ANNUAL, IT REALLY DOESN'T LOOK LIKE THAT FROM A DISTANCE OR IN THE GARDEN". HOWEVER, THE SECTIONS FOR EACH ANNUAL ENTITLED "PROBLEMS AND SOLUTIONS" "GOOD NEIGHBORS" AND "TOP PERFORMER" ARE STILL HELPFUL....HOWEVER, I AM STILL LOOKING FOR A BETTER ANNUAL BOOK... LANSING, ILLINOIS
Look no further for a book on annuals.......2002-02-04
This is THE book you'll need on annuals. I've been looking for two years for one that sorts flowers by use and growing conditions and tells you everything you need to know. Others make all annuals sound like they'll be successful in your situation. But as someone who strictly grows only annuals (I have a rooftop garden), even treating flowers according to directions in other books doesn't always work. This book will save you money in the end. Buy it!!!!

An enjoyable curiosity.......2005-08-27
One or two reviews emphasised on this book as a *practical* guide to typography and found it wanting for its semi-organised style and out-of-date focus on manual typography (filmsetting, etc.). That's fair enough. I read it as someone merely *interested* in typography, and not just modern-day computer typography, but the art and science of designing pages and books *before* computers did all the hard work. From that point of view, it's a delighful book with plenty of illustrations and personal stories from the author.
Some areas of knowledge are hard to convey in text, and my knowledge of printing is little improved by this book, but I'll forgive that; the essentials of design are covered very well.
One's judgement of a book obviously depends on what one is seeking. For those who are merely curious or interested in historical typography, as opposed to professionally involved in modern typography, I heartily recommend "The Thames and Hudson Manual of Typography".
Somewhat chaotic, limited relevance to digital type.......2003-11-25
This is a curious book, part tutorial, part cookbook, part personal war stories, including the author's pet tools and techniques. It was obviously designed before computers were commonplace and many sections dealing with hot metal type or phototypesetting are completely obsolete nowadays.
The beginning has a decent introduction to the history of typography and typefaces.
The middle part concerns itself with working around the constraints of metal or copyediting before word processing systems became commonplace. If nothing else, it should give us a renewed appreciation of how much tedious labor computers save us, such as not having to count characters to find out how many pages will be required.
The final part on layout for stationery, books and magazines is pretty good, but not very systematic, and carries the same war story flavor as the section on recommended tools.
All in all, this book has some interesting information, but I would not recommend it to anyone who wants to learn how to produce beautiful documents out of his desktop publishing setup. Robin Williams's "The PC is not a typewriter", Robert Bringhurst's "The Elements of Typographical Style" or even Donald Knuth's books on computers and typography are better choices in this respect.
Not a manual--a personal collection of ideas.......2002-12-08
This book is quite a disappointment. Instead of leading the reader logically through a primer on orthography (good typography) or providing a comprehensive reference book, this is a collection of idiosyncratic observations. (A high point is the day McLean dared to set poetry in sans serif type!) It has some illustrations of good and bad layout, but not enough for a layperson to be able to generalize useful rules. The book itself isn't very attractive, and it cannot be recommended as a modern introduction. Laser printers have made "everyman" (and everywoman) a typesetter, but this is not the book to lead you to better layout and design.
A practical look at typography and book production.......2000-04-04
The book was written in 1980 before the onset of desktop publishing, and even with the additions in 1992 is in some respects a little outdated in some places. However there is a lot of practical information that is still very relevant today. Furthermore the book is well written in an easy to read style and nicely designed with wide margins that have lovely illustrations and examples of typefaces. It also makes it easy to hold the book and not have your thumb cover the text. The book starts with an historical overview of printing, then explains equipment that would have been used in a typographers studio, much of which is probably superceded by computers now. The book then examines what makes a legible publication, taking account of typefaces (serif is better for long articles), good line lengths, use of space and cultural background. Caligraphy and classification of typefaces are looked at, followed by different methods of typesetting such as hot and cold metal and filmsetting (again this is now more of a historical section). An interesting chapter on paper explains how it is made and different types that are available, the good advice to talk to your printer rather than make a choice yourself is typical of the practical information the book provides. Two chapters cover book design ranging from the parts of a book and the merits of asymmetrical or centred typography and proofers marks. McLean translated a couple of Jan Tschichold's books so is well informed on this subject and that of the golden section for determining the margins in a book. Practical considerations such as libraries often re-binding books twice and guides on margins to allow this are given here. Short chapters on jobbing typography, such as business cards, and newspaper design close the book. McLean redesigned the Observer's weekend review section in 1960 and has useful insights on design considerations.

A Visionary Mexican-American Leader.......2002-10-30
This is the definitive biography of an astonishing Mexican-American. 4 time LULAC president Felix Tijerina was born in Mexico, and came to Houston speaking no English. After he built a Tex-Mex restaurant empire, he turned his attention to the plight of his fellow Mexican-Americans. Spanish-speaking kids failed out of school in huge numbers at the time. Tijerina thought if they had a few words of English, they might do better. So he spent his own money to hire tutors to teach kids 400 words of English before they entered kindergarten. LBJ adopted his "little schools of 400" and made them the model for the Headstart Program--one of the most successful Federal programs in history.
Kreneck's dedication to an accurate telling of Mexican-American history has been an inspiration to me.
