    Book Description

Trout Magic is a warm, joyous, and maverick look at trout fishing and its attendant tall tales, strange happenings, and all-around fishing lore. Traver recounts the story of a mysterious "dancing fly, " speaks pointedly about "kiss-and-tell" fishermen, debunks fly fishermen as the "world's greatest snobs, " lets us in on the fishing story Life missed, and takes us along on his strangest fishing trip. We meet the unforgettable Danny McGinnis, guide, and other choice characters and events from his anything-but-ordinary fishing trips. Traver even has some new angles on women anglers and does a free piece of tongue-in-cheek literary sleuthing into Ernest Hemingway's story "Big Two-Hearted River."

There's enough trout magic here to rub off on every reader -- man, woman, or child -- as Robert Traver weaves his inimitable storytelling spell. Trout Magic is a marvelous catch of wit, wisdom, and anecdote sure to delight everyone who enjoys a master storyteller who just happens to write here about his wonderful world of trout fishing.

                    Book Description

Newly expanded and updated second edition! Finally! A book for the novice... Contrary to popular belief, Scotch is not just for old men sitting around stuffy country clubs...it's the original luxury spirit and it's now more popular than ever! But for someone who wants to learn about Scotch, it can be a little intimidating - overwhelming even - all those unfamiliar terms, different brands - the novice has no idea where to get started. Most books on the topic are written for those already familiar with Scotch and tend to concentrate on author ratings, distillery overviews, and tasting notes. They simply do not address the needs of someone new to Scotch. That's where The Instant Expert's Guide to Single Malt Scotch comes in. In the end, this book will equip readers with the fundamentals, enabling them to continue to explore the great taste of single malt Scotch whisky on their own. With new-found knowledge, what once seemed like an overwhelming number of choices will suddenly become an infinite number of unique possibilities to experience and enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars Instant Expert's Guide to Single Malt Scotch.......2007-03-09

A great intro into the world of single malt scotch. A quick read with straight forward no bull info that you will use as a reference in the future. No regrets, don't hesitate, can't go wrong.

5 out of 5 stars Banish your ignorance.......2006-06-08

Let me first say that I don't care much for Scotch. Actually let me refine that statement a bit-- Up and until recently I didn't care much for Scotch, due in large part to my utter and complete ignorance of the subject. That and the fact that my impressions of Scotch drinkers was one of boorish stock brokers bellied up to a bar pouring money down the drain faster then they could the whisky into their over fattened gullets.

In short I was constrained by ignorance, and quite frankly intimidation. The glistening row of top shelf bottles were as mysterious and as impenetrable as any exclusive country club. My head spun with questions. How does one even start? Should I simply order the most expensive one, and assume its the best? or should I start with the least expensive and work my way up? Over Rocks? Neat? Single malt? Blends? What's with the missing 'E' in Whisky?

Clear, concise, and to the point (and slim enough to carry on your person whilst traipsing about the local waterholes), this book provides the foundations for a beginner, defines the mandatory nomenclature, and dispels many myths.

Mr. Erskines book has been almost wholly responsible for an eye opening education on the subject, and a growing appreciation of the drink, culture and history. Two thumbs up, 5 stars and a solid purchase.

                    5 out of 5 stars Fantastic Introduction.......2006-02-26

I work "in the Industry" and I must say this is a fantastic introduction for someone who has no clue about where to start.

I don't believe there is another book of this sort, which boils it down to only the most essential basics.

                    Neat little book.

                    5 out of 5 stars Simply Perfect!.......2006-01-11

I am a true beer lover who is constantly on the hunt for new and exciting flavors in beverages. However after trying what seems just about every type of alcoholic beverage out there I realized that there was one frontier I truly had not experienced, which is single malt scotch. After receiving a bottle of single malt scotch from my father-in-law I realized it was time to get educated.

In comes Kevin Erskine's smooth read for such a complex beverage that quickly had me knowledgeable on how to properly enjoy this amazing spirit. This book is very concise (at only 67 pages) with lots of information that will quickly turn a novice into a pro. I highly recommend it if you too want to easily learn the marvels of single malt scotch.

A series of formatted topics address all common conditions, covering diagnosis, treatment and medication and listing topics alphabetically for quick consultation. Each condition receives an overview of the basics, diagnostic procedures, treatment options, and medications. While it's technical enough for a vet's office, owners will find it equally valuable.

Sadly, Fuzzy has passed away, as of two days prior to this writing. She lived for 8 years, (she was almost 3 years old when I took her home), and her health was excellent until her last year. She was my little buddy, and I took her with me almost everywhere.
For those who would consider keeping ferret:
-They are not like dogs and cats, they need to interact with you very closely. Give them as much attention as possible.
-Ferrets are highly intelligent animals. Even if they seem indifferent, they really aren't. Young ferrets may seem more preoccupied with exploring the house, or playing with toys, but they still need your care and love (ferrets become more openly affectionate with age).
-Because they are intelligent, and therefore curious, they will get into extraordinary mischief, and they do break things. A KEEPER OF FERRETS MUST HAVE A SENSE OF HUMOR! In fact, weasel-mischief can be quite hilarious from our perspective!
-Ferrets have very little fear, and very little sense of caution, they require your supervision to keep them safe! They can easily get lost or in an accident without your watchful eye! They need you!
-Although cages are sold for ferrets, FERRETS ARE NOT MEANT TO BE CAGED for long periods. The cage is there to keep them safe when there are potential unsafe conditions, such as cleaning the house, etc.
-Ferrets like to nip and bite. This is not because they are wild, vicious, or mean, its just the way they play and communicate with each other. They assume you are no different!
-They also relieve themselves quite a bit, and require frequent cleaning of their living-spaces. If your gut or bladder was as tiny, you would "go" just as often!
-Ferrets have a musty odor, but its not so bad, and you will get used to it. Besides, they are also soft, warm, and furry.
Sadly, there are many ferrets that wind up with abusive and neglectful people. These kind of people brought a ferret home because they want to show-off, or some such thing. When they realize that caring for an animal requires work and compassion, thats where the trouble starts, and the ferret suffers quite badly. If you are not one of "those kind of people", and you care for animals, you will probably make a ferret's brief life very happy.

                    5 out of 5 stars A Great Beginners Book.......2001-07-27

If you've never owned a ferret before or feel like you're not knowledgable enough with the fuzzies you have now, this is a great book. It covers all the basics one needs to know when caring for a ferret, or multiples. Including ferret proofing your home, basic training technics with multiple suggestions for different behavioral problems since no two ferrets are a like and will respond differently and many many other topics. I enjoyed this book and found it very informative since at the time I purchased it I felt I needed to learn more about my sweet little fuzzies and sure did! A great book.

4 out of 5 stars Fascinating information on training ferrets to hunt.......2000-09-27

I am not a hunter, but I do have pet ferrets, and am fascinated with all aspects of the domestic ferret. In England, where an overabundance of rabbit warrens actually cause property and environmental damage, ferrets are used in hunting rabbits. McKay presents a wealth of information on training ferrets for hunting, the equipment used, retrieval of ferrets in rabbit holes, as well as more mundane matters such as where to hunt. Most of the photographs illustrate the points made in the accompanying text. The squeamish should be forewarned that this is a hands on book about hunting, and some of the photographs graphically depict dead bunnies and very excited ferrets, which is completely appropriate for the title. I found this book to be an enjoyable introduction into the art of ferreting, which is practiced almost exclusively over the water.

                                  Book Description

Joan Dye Gussow is an extraordinarily ordinary woman. She lives in a home not unlike the average home in a neighborhood that is, more or less, typically suburban. What sets her apart from the rest of us is that she thinks more deeply—and in more eloquent detail—about food. In sharing her ponderings, she sets a delightful example for those of us who seek the healthiest, most pleasurable lifestyle within an environment determined to propel us in the opposite direction. Joan is a suburbanite with a green thumb, but also a feisty, defiant spirit with a relentlessly positive outlook.

This Organic Life begins with Joan and her husband Alan's trials and tribulations growing vegetables for their own table while coping with careers and a sprawling Victorian house in Congers, New York. Motivated to go "off-the-grid" of the global food system in their later years, the Gussows find and fall in love with a dilapidated Odd Fellows Hall on the banks of the Hudson River. Joan's often hilarious accounts of the "renovation" of the house and the creation of their new gardens are spiced by extracts from her own journal, and over thirty wonderful recipes using fresh, seasonal fruits and vegetables. There is also an occasional pontification about a food distribution system run amok. At the heart of This Organic Life is the premise that locally grown food eaten in season makes sense economically, ecologically, and gastronomically. Transporting produce to New York from California—not to mention Central and South America, Australia, or Europe—consumes more energy in transit than it yields in calories. (It costs 435 fossil fuel calories to fly a 5-calorie strawberry from California to New York.) Add in the deleterious effects of agribusiness, such as the endless cycle of pesticide, herbicide, and chemical fertilizers; the loss of topsoil from erosion of over-tilled croplands; depleted aquifers and soil salinization from over-irrigation; and the arguments in favor of "this organic life" become overwhelmingly convincing.

                                  5 out of 5 stars very good.......2006-08-07

I haven't spent much time looking at the recipes & I'll admit I skipped a few boring(in my eyes) paragraphs here & there.
However I'm growing my first organic garden this year & the reason is similar to Joan's. I don't want to rely on industry for everything. I would like to be able to provide some of the basics for my family. I found the story of her life very motivating. I also know a little bit about the area she lives in & I think she did a terrific job describing it.
This book most certainly inspires me to raise the bar in my organic garden and I will buy locally.
I know some people didn't enjoy her home building sections, but I found them interesting & sometimes funny.

4 out of 5 stars Not so much about organic gardening.......2006-07-25

I have really enjoyed this book and felt a kindred relationship with the author. I too have gutted a house and had a garden in full swing at the same time. I loved the recipes that went along with her stories of vegetables and fruits and enjoyed the passages about her homes.

This book is a good read if you are not expecting much information about Organic gardening but instead a story of the authors life and how it revolves around her garden.

2 out of 5 stars would not want her as a neighbor.......2005-10-13

While the subject matter was good, the writing style was lacking. Plus, I don't think she applies the same level of high-mindedness to herself as she does to other people. She seems to like to cut down trees but then complains later about flooding from upgradient homeowners that have cut down their trees. Also, she drowns possums. She complains that she raises her food to live on and she can't spare any to varmints. I'm not sure what she thinks the possum was eating the food for. I suspect to live on. And some of her arguments don't hold water. Like the vegetarian argument mentioned earlier. THis book could have used better editing.

4 out of 5 stars An expression true dedication to eating locally.......2005-10-02

Joan Gussow shares her delights, frustrations, and the evolution of gardening as part of her life. I found it fascinating to read about her ever-deeping relationship to the land and climate of her gardens.

What I found frustrating about this book were the chapters towards the beginning about the process of moving to her house in Piermont, as well as her seeming disconnect to the mainstream American public. The chapters primarily about the move to Piermont were both disorganized and repetitive. I can understand the root of her rage about American indifference to the unnatural aspect of the plethora of fruits and vegetables available in grocery stores year-round. Still, she sometimes seemed to take a very rigthtous position on the matter in the interactions described in the book.

Overall, I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in local, sustainable agriculture, gardening memiors, and promoting a sense of place. Joan obviously is quite literally grounded and rooted to her land, both in good times and in bad. Hopefully, her vision of local food systems will continue to grow.

I bought this book because I thought I was going to gain insights about organic gardening. I was sorely disappointed. The beginning chapters drone on and on about a move to a new home site...I grew tired of hearing detailed descriptions of the doomed home. Also, while the author went on about eating locally to lessen the impact on the environment from long distance travel, I was disturbed to hear about the home she bought being leveled and taken to a landfill and to hear about her endless trips back and forth between her old home and new one. Finally, I was disturbed by her chapter dealing with animal drownings and killings and disagree with her statement that "if we don't kill animals, we will starve". I'm sorry I spent the money on this book.

                                        Book Description

This book is a collection of papers on the metaphysics and natural philosophy of John Buridan (ca. 1295-1361), one of the most innovative and influential thinkers of the later Middle Ages. It brings together original contributions by fifteen Buridan scholars on a number of central topics in the Buridanian corpus, including the theory of universals, the role of definitions in scientific practice, necessity and probability, time, the natural order, the theory of motion, time and infinity, certitude, sensation, dreams, and volition.

The papers provide a unified picture of Buridan's non-logical writings, most of which are still unedited, emphasizing throughout his particular methods of presenting and solving philosophical problems. The result suggests that Buridan's reputation for brilliance in logic and semantics deserves to be extended to other areas of philosophy, and that his work deserves closer study.
