A decent read.......2005-10-08

I bought this book hoping for some simple, effective ways to implement a new press break for my team, and got it! His 1-up press break (followed by 2 and 3-up) so simple that I wondered how I hadn't thought of some of this on my own. I loved that the book was organized into the presses themselves, and also a point-by-point list of the responsibilities of each player, which makes it easier for players to learn. It also contains drills for the press breaks, which is key. My only problem was that the cost of the book didn't seem to be equivalent to the information I gained. I would recommend buying this book used, if available.

Only slightly helpful.......2004-08-30

Although there are some phrases about travel, hotels, and restaurants, much time is wasted on things that are not helpful to the beginner, and especially not to the tourist. Siblings arguing over borrowing money from their grandparents? People gossiping about their friends and describing their living room furniture? Whose idea was this? In any case, there is no systematic approach to the language, nor any serious attempt to help a beginning student learn the basics of vocabulary and sentence building. There are much better choices available, such as "Learn in Your Car Italian".

A fast way to make Italian stay!.......2000-11-05

About a year ago, I had the honor of going to Italy with my high school band. I live in Minnesota, and it was to be my first experience in a country where English is the second language. So being the type of person I am with language (I could speak Spanish, English, German and Esperanto fluently already), I thought I should pick up a little Italian before I left. So I went to a local bookstore and was directed to the 'Italian on the Go' cassette set by the old woman behind the counter. The price was right, so I purchased it and popped it in on the car ride home. From the moment I heard the Italian banjo-thingy start to play and the authentic language pursue, I was hooked. The amount of vocabulary I retained from just a few listenings was incredible. Literally everything stuck! When I got to Italy, I was by far the best Italian speaker in our group. And I could speak what I knew confidently and without thinking! With the help of a basic phrase book and the cassettes, I could shop without using any English. It was amazing. Since I came home, I have kept Italian close to me. It is my most proficient language next to English and a lot of it is because of 'Italian on the Go'. Though I've moved to much more advanced courses now, I still run through the 'IOTG' cassettes once a week to keep my pronounciation sharp. I just love the dialouges! Anyone who wants to start learning Italian shound start here. It's prob'ly the most beutiful language in the world and now there's a NO EFFORT way to fluency.

THE PREMIERE SPIDERMAN ARTIST!.......2005-08-17

The John Romita Sketchbook is another in the outstanding series of interview/sketchbooks from J. David Spurlock's Vanguard Productions. With all due respect for Steve Ditko, it is the Romita Spiderman that I most fondly recall. Perhaps it's because it's the one I grew up on or perhaps it's because I liked Romita's more modern look. Whatever the case, John has always been the artist I most associate with the webcrawler.

John begins by discussing his early career as an illustrator as well as his education and influences such as Roy Crane, Hal Foster, Noel Nickles and Alex Toth. The one revelation that I've had in reading many of these sketchbooks from Vanguard was that so many of these artists had been working in comics since the golden age. I just assumed that Romita was a young guy when he took over Spiderman because his art was so dynamic and so modern looking. I was surprised to find out that his career in comics started in the late 1940's doing ghost work on crime comics. John moved to DC in the 1950's where he was inking Mike Sekowsky's work on various romance titles and learning everything he could from Carmine Infantino. It was interesting to hear Romita discuss the DC art style of that period. They wanted everything to look uniform and generic. One wonders how good these artists could have been had they been afforded the opportunity to express their own unique art styles the way artists at Marvel were able to do.

John would get laid off at DC and was immediately hired by Stan Lee, who Romita considered a great editor. John lets fans in on a secret about how Marvel constantly recycled plots, changing names, etc, to churn material out at a faster pace. He covers, although a bit too briefly, taking over first for Wally Wood on Daredevil and then Ditko on Spiderman. Later, Romita relates how Jack Kirby had wanted John to go with him to DC when he left in the early 70's. John was flattered but remained at Marvel. Kirby himself would return just a few years later. Perhaps my favorite part of the interview was Romita discussing how books were plotted and taking the reader through several sample pages of panel art and explaining the hows and whys of comic art technique.

Throughout the book we are treated to hundreds of wonderful illustrations including those beautiful Romita women and their trademark dimples. John is an engrossing talent and confers his vast experience of the comic book business to the reader. A thorough, and thoroughly enjoyable interview. As with most of the fantastic books from Vanguard Productions (distributed by Watson-Guptill) it is available in both hard and softcover editions, as well as a signed hardcover edition.

I don't know why they called it a sketchbook........2002-06-16

Poorly designed and conceived this book does a disservice to the legendary comic book artist.

Severely lacking, It reads and looks like a "fanzine." It's all black and white which would have been ok, but the book confines what little art there is into the small comic-book trade paperback size, giving the book a very claustraphobic look.

For a hardcore fan it was a pleasant, light read, but as a "sketchbook" it is really disappointing. John Romita deserves a much more professional tribute.

This book is a must have for any lover of great comic book art. John Romita is a legend.

if you enjoy a lot of great pictures of doberman pinschers, then this is the book for you. it was a bit too brief on some key issues, such as proper puppy training and handling. also did not delve very far into breed specific maladies, such as color dilution alopecia, which is seen in blues. infomative, yet too brief.

An incredible resource for all autograph collectors.......2001-06-24

Many people think of autograph collecting only in terms of writing fan letters to movie stars, but the fact is, the hobby offers an opportunity to hold history in your hands.

Owning a letter you know was written by an historical figure you admire -- when it is Abrham Lincoln, or Judy Garland -- is an incredible experience. But it is a hobby which should not be embarked upon without doing your homework.

This book is an excellent place to start. Starting with general information on what, where and how to collect, Rendell then examines collecting specialties from such as the American West, Presidents, WWII, Music, Science, etc. He gives specific and detailed information which will help you understand autographs and avoid buying fakes.

It contains hundreds of signature facsimiles, which are extremely important for comparison purposes.

Rendell is one of the most respected autograph dealers in the country and manages to be interesting as well as informative.
