Book Description
Cheerleading has undergone dramatic changes in the past decade. For the first time, those who have traditionally cheered on and supported athletes are themselves being considered athletes. Performing increasingly rigorous stunts, cheerleaders must now meet higher qualifications and follow stricter safety precautions.
With more than 700 all-new photographs, this handbook offers the latest information and instruction on: Qualifications, Conditioning, Tryouts, Cheers, Chants, Jumps, Gymnastics, Double Stunts, Pyramids, Pompom Routines, Leadership, Fund-raising Ideas, Pep Rally and Spirit Ideas.
With a detailed history of cheerleading and the role of cheerleaders in school life, and a discussion of the basic principles for understanding sports, The Official Cheerleader's Handbook is a book worth shouting about.
Customer Reviews:
For the new cheerleader and coach.......2004-12-31
This one was written before most current cheerleaders were born, and the pyramid section is woefully out of date with its 3 &1/2 highs, but the key ingredients on cheering how-to are all still relevant, both physically and spirit-wise. It is still, in my estimation, the best book for a beginning cheerleader to have because it has:
*Stretches which are still helpful.
*A tremendous variety of jump examples, more-so than any other book I have seen, including the C/window, & stag. Also starts with the tuck as the most basic jump rather than the toe touch. Unfortunately, it doesn't really show you the approach and landing techinques.
*More variations of arm and hand positions than any other book I've seen.
*Great pictures of what not to do when hitting motions. (Broken wrists, fly-away arms, uneven shoulders)
*Simple, basic partner stunts best suited for beginner cheerleaders who need to learn the step-lock method (at a supervised practice, of course.) Pony mount, Knee/Standing tabletop, Side sit, 'Bama sit, single based thigh stand variations, victory mount, star, flying angel, and stag catch. Their tallest stunt is a shoulder stand. No prep level or higher stunts are taught in this book, but there are pictures of some taller pyramids, a few of which are still legal.
*Good sample dance 8 counts, though a bit out of date for the Hip-hop age. But perfect if you have a marching band.
*Small section on basic tumbling, but smartly suggests that cheerleaders seek out qualified instructors to learn from.
*Several pages of cheers and chants: basic spirit, football, basketball, and wrestling
My advice? Beginning cheerleaders need this book. Intermediate and advanced cheerleaders might find it useful only if they want to consider finding ways to update some old school moves and look a little different from everyone else who attended summer camp with them.
My idea of an excellent cheering how-to library consists of this book, plus "The Ultimate Guide to Cheerleading" and "Coaching Cheerleading Successfully".
Coach ~Jen
Best Book on Cheerleading!!.......2003-02-10
What a great book! I'm a cheerleader and a gymnast, and I've found it to be a fantastic resource! This book is perfect for all levels of cheerleading, whether you're a Pop Warner cheerleader or a Varsity cheerleader. It has tons of hints, tips, and instructions. There are thousands of photos. In here, there are jumps, cheers, chants, gymnastics, routines, stunts, pyramids, tryout tips, and sooo much more! This book has helped me become a much better cheerleader and I've appreciated everything I learned from it. This book deserves three cheers!!
Not for today's cheerleader.......2002-07-24
This book, while helpful in some ways, is not ideal for today's more active and athletic Varsity or All-Star cheerleader. I would definitely reccommend this book for less competitive squads, like Pop Warner or J.V. Beginning cheerleaders and new coaches may find this book useful. But personally, with five years experience, I didn't learn too much from it. Instructional videos or competitions on ESPN will benefit competitive cheerleaders more. The tumbling section has detailed pictures of performing a back handspring, and some of the spirit/fundraising ideas are good. The stunting pictures are very outdated, and could use some updating. There are very few free-standing stunts, basically everything is old-fashioned pyramids. The basic stunts they show are pretty innovative, and would be good for Pop Warner cheerleaders. If they revamped this portion of the book, I would give it a higher rating. GOOD LUCK AND HAPPY CHEERLEADING!
Great Book!! I loved it alot!!.......2001-03-14
This book shows you step-by-step ways to perform incredible stunts such as pyramids. Being a Varsity Cheerleader this was a great book for reference. It was very helpful. Thanks to this book we put on a good performence and really pepped up our players and had a year full of tons of victorys! Read it! It's incredible!!
Good for novice coaches.......2000-08-08
I coach Pop Warner (little league) cheerleaders. This is the best book I've found for cheer ideas, fundamentals, and stunt safety. The pictures are outdated, but the basics are all intact and correct. Highly recommended for new coaches.
Customer Reviews:
I love This.......2007-01-12
I love this dictionary It breaks it down in Twi and english. Thank You.
Needs Review.......2003-07-23
More review work needed for the dictionary to meet good standards.
another flaw.......2003-06-23
nasal vowels are not marked - pretty bad for a serious dictionary; or is it non-nasal dialect????
A big disappointment.......2001-05-17
When there is such a dearth of materials for the learning of Twi, I am reluctant to criticise. However, a dictionary is a critical resource for a learner and should be reliable and educative. This dictionary is inaccurate and incomplete. I am working with two of the most widely used series of Twi learner's books available in Ghana, and a significant proportion of their vocabulary is missing from this dictionary, spelt differently from accepted usage, or given inaccurate meanings. Unfortunately, we still await a good modern Twi dictionary by a native speaker of the language.
Book Description
When Mort Walker (b. 1923) was ten years old, he received an inscribed "Moon Mullins" cartoon from its creator Frank Willard that read, "Say Morton, those drawings you sent me were swell --- I'll bet you'll be a big shot cartoonist some day." For Walker that day came sooner than even Willard could have thought. By the time he was fifteen, Walker was a comic strip artist for a daily metropolitan newspaper. By the time he was eighteen, he was chief editor of Hallmark Cards.
In 1950, King Features picked up his strip "Beetle Bailey" for syndication. Four years later, Walker created a spin-off of "Beetle Bailey" called "Hi and Lois." Both strips continue to run daily, drawn and/or supervised by Walker, and "Beetle Bailey" is distributed to roughly 1,800 newspapers. Walker is one of the most widely read cartoonists in American history, and a legend in his own time.
"Mort Walker: Conversations" collects interviews and articles that span from 1938 to 2004. In these conversations Walker shows how he has managed to keep his art and stories fresh for over seventy years of production.
Walker's love of storytelling shines here, as he recounts anecdotes concerning fellow cartoonists such as Charles M. Schulz ("Peanuts"), Al Capp ("Li'l Abner"), and Walt Kelly ("Pogo"). Being almost a generation younger than most of his peers, he was often called "the Kid" by elder statesmen such as Milton Caniff and Rube Goldberg. His engagement with the Museum of Cartoon Art --- which he founded --- is discussed in these pieces, along with the politics involved in working with cartoonists' unions, artistic communities, and syndications.
Customer Reviews:
Fun and Informative!.......2005-03-01
A sweet note to me from Mort Walker: "Dear Jason, I got the book today and it's beautiful! I read some of it this morning and had a great time remembering a lot of stuff I'd forgotten. Thanks for all your hard work and devotion. Sincerely, Mort."
Mort Walker has said that a successful comic strip character should be instantly recognizable. We should immediately understand who he is and what he's about. Walker calls this "see-ability" and "readability." Publishing professionally as a child prodigy at the age of eleven, and going on to hold numerous positions as an editor, designer, and creator of nine syndicated strips, it is ironic that Walker's most recognized character is known as the laziest fellow in the funny pages.
This volume begins with a syndicated article from 1938, which ran with the photograph of Walker at his drawing table, a sailor's cap perched back on his head. Walker's young face beams with joy and ambition. He seems to embody the Joseph Campbell catch phrase, "Find your bliss." In 1989, Bill Watterson addressed a festival at Ohio State University, expressing that the comic pages were full of doddering, dinosaur strips. A similar plea by Berkley Breathed came in 2003, asking the old guard to step aside in order to make room for younger creators. In both cases, Walker responded in Cartoonist Profiles (#89, #139), re-stating his devotion to his work. To Breathed he wrote, "I love what I'm doing. It would kill me to be told to quit." Walker's continued enthusiasm reveals that the boy with the sailor cap continues to beam from the drawing board, and that to "follow one's bliss" remains as valid and vital at age fourteen as it does at age eighty. Indeed, as this collection illustrates, that is Mort Walker's "see-ability" and "readability" as a character.
Mort Walker Conversations collects interviews and articles that span from 1938 to 2004. His engagement with the Museum of Cartoon Art- which he founded- is discussed in these pieces, along with the politics involved in working with cartoonists' unions, artistic communities, and syndicates. In these conversations Walker shows how he has managed to keep his art and stories fresh for over seventy years of production.
I had a blast reviewing interviews and articles from Mort's long career, and an even bigger blast spending time with Mort and his assistant, Bill Janocha, while I prepared this book. So many great comic strips have sprung from this self-proclaimed "human inventing machine." And for a year before launching Beetle, he was even the top-selling magazine cartoonist in the country. Mort's done it all, and it's really interesting to read through his colorful history of conversations about writing, drawing, and about working with many of the greats on strips and in the NCS, like Dik Browne, Rube Goldberg, Charles Schulz, Al Capp, Milt Caniff, and Walt Kelly.
Most of the pieces in this volume are quite rare, including a number of interviews Mort gave on television with Mike Peters and Bruce Blitz, and special interviews with me, Lee Nordling, and Bill Janocha. Mort Walker Conversations is an excellent resource for those interested in Walker's career and about the world of comic strips. Fans should also seek out these books by Walker: Backstage at the Strips and Mort Walker's Private Scrapbook.

Book Description
Because You Believed in Me uses stories of real people-such as Susan B. Anthony and Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Claude Monet and Eugene Boudin, Ulysses S. Grant and Abraham Lincoln, Martin Luther King Jr. and Benjamin Elijah Mays-to capture the elusive qualities and proven benefits of mentoring relationships. The value of mentoring, tested by time, becomes apparent in their stories. What if Eugene Boudin hadn't encouraged Claude Monet to paint the outdoors? Would someone else have inspired another person with similar talent to abandon studio painting and venture into the beauty of landscapes? Mentors expand boundaries and open worlds of possibilities. Even brilliant people need heroes. The emulation of another can be a catalyst for self-discovery. A mentor's example, along with questions and shared experiences, helps prot,g,s clarify their paths, crystallize their values, and experience the freedom to explore unimagined vistas.Designed to inspire and uplift, Because You Believed in Me highlights the spirit of mutual generosity in the mentor-prot,g, relationship. This wonderful collection is an invitation to reach out, renew, and remember the powerful influences of unique individuals.
Customer Reviews:
poorly written.......2006-12-12
I thought this book was poorly written. Although it has some great examples of mentoring relationships I felt that it lacked a solid focus on topics the book was covering exactly. The book outlined the results of effective mentoring relationships but I don't think that it provided a structure for individuals to follow so that their mentoring relationships would be as effective. I would definitely not recommend this book to current or future mentors.
Timely and Fascinating Storytelling.......2003-05-07
In every informative and impressive page, McMullen and Miller illustrate the value of mentor relationships. Historical pairs arouse curiosity, interest, and the desire to share the beautiful truths of mentoring's importance with family, friends, colleagues, and community. This inspiring storytelling is penned with strong writing, keen understanding, and timely significance.
Who knew?.......2003-05-04
Who knew such famous people had help from others to acomplish their goals? I've been giving it to all of my friends for their birthdays.

Book Description
This well referenced book provides an amply illustrated publication on upholstery conservation which discusses and reviews the issues related to the care, interpretation and treatment of upholstered furniture.
Through many well illustrated case studies the inter-disciplinary collaboration fundamental to upholstery conservation, and the complex decision-making process involved in the treatment of upholstered furniture, are made evident. The case histories are contributed by leading international practitioners in the field and concern objects and collections in the care of English Heritage, the Victoria and Albert Museum, the Metropolitan Museum of Art and other internationally renowned institutions.
Likewise, the contributors, from both sides of the Atlantic, are world-renowned specialists and leaders in this area of conservation working for the public and private sectors. The case histories, illustrated in colour, black and white and specially prepared line drawings, concern object treatment and documentation, the conservation of information, the function and the artefact. They range from the documentation of eighteenth century removable chair covers and the treatment of a nineteenth century carriage to a twentieth century foam-filled chair belonging to a museum.
* Principles and practice are demonstrated through a series of case histories
* Provides a common vocabulary and point of reference across the conservation disciplines
* Includes contributions from world-renowned specialists from the public and private sectors
Book Description
Most flowers and vegetables love the sun, but the gardeners who tend them crave the shade. A comfortable hammock strung between two trees. A set of Adirondack chairs arranged for conversation beneath a vine-covered arbor. A stone bench tucked into a quiet nook. These out-of-the-way outdoor retreats provide busy gardeners with cool relief from the hot sun, as well as precious hours of quiet, privacy, and peace.
In SHADY RETREATS, lifelong gardener Barbara W. Ellis provides detailed plans for 20 gardens with shade as the theme. Each design includes easy-to-read blueprints and a glorious oil painting of what the garden will look like. Ellis also provides specific plant lists; suggestions on how to bring color into the shade; and practical advice on how to use shrubs, trees, vines, and man-made structures to create attractive, inviting, shady sanctuaries in any garden or yard.
The garden design concepts are easy for even novices to grasp, and experienced gardeners will appreciate the unique inspirations and down-to-earth advice on how to adapt the concept of the shady retreat to fit their own garden's configuration.
Complete with suggestions on how to use gazebos, containers, fountains, and other garden ornaments, plus an encyclopedia of approximately 100 shade-loving plants, Shady Retreats is an easy-to-use handbook that helps even beginning gardeners make the move out of the house and into a cool, inviting outdoor sanctuary.

Less than inspiring.......2000-05-05
Sorry but I'm with the other reviewer - Lillian Too's books seem to rehash the same stuff over and over again. Also I find her very confusing. I'm fascinated by feng shui but think there are much better books out there to be honest.
ALL THE BOOKS ARE SIMILAR !.......2000-04-12
I notice that the books written by Lilian Too are almost similar and I agreed a reader from the U.S. that Lilian Too's Feng Shui books are aims for commercial and money making, and not really helping people to overcome difficult and problems by using Feng Shui.
Acknowledging ones career.......2000-02-26
It is beyond examination that Lillian's exemplifies the ideas of feng shui, and brings it about in a really easy and comprehensible manner. It takes feng shui to a new level, adapting the essential elements of theory and incorporates it towards different aspects of one's life.
It embelishes the essence in understanding focal and directing ones energy towards ones center. It is through a center that we as individuals live and affect one another. This book provides a prime example in understanding and able to focus our energy in a series of manner to enhance our productivity and life.
I bought this book 6 months ago ..........1999-01-23
... and after energizing the corners and tapping the directions according to Lillian Too's advice,I have just been promoted. I have been so inspired by her fantasitic career achievements - here in Malaysia she is a great role model... I recommend this and all her other books very highly but this is the best book !

Hobbies to Careers.......2000-12-13
Excellent advice on how to pursue careers in the arts and crafts fields and professions. It is practical and fun to read especially since so many opportunities in these fields are discussed. The histories of these fields are very good as are the processes involved. It makes one want to pursue one's interest in arts and crafts!
Valuable compendium for those considering a career in crafts.......1999-06-01
This book is a valuable guide for students considering a career in the arts. Each career path includes a brief history, a description of the actual processes involved in the work and discusses training options and job potentials. A particular strength of the book lies in including some of the more unusual crafts like book binding, stained glass design and weaving.
This Book Offers an Exceptional Measure of Information.......1999-02-23
Do you sometimes think to yourself when you're doing a project, "I wouldn't mind doing this for a career." Then the one question you must definitely ask yourself is, "What procedures must I take in order to develop a career out of my talent?" This book can get you started in the right direction.
Opportunities in Arts and Crafts Careers offers you a clear understanding about the various careers available, the skills needed, and how to get started. I wanted to read this book to find out if it would help out fellow woodworkers who would like to pursue a career with their skills, and if it had information for them to get started in one. I've found that not only does it provide information for these two avenues, but also an understanding of the history of the craft.
I extremely recommend this book for those who would like to seek a career in the arts and crafts. Elizabeth B. Gardner has performed an exceptional measure of research, in order to write this book with the facts provided in it.
This book is very engaging & accessible..with great strength.......1999-01-04
I applaud Elizabeth Gardner for authoring Opportunities in Arts and Crafts Careers. This book is a very engaging and accessible reference to a multitude of careers that are too often overlooked by students, their teachers, parents, and counselors. The book covers a broad scope of career opportunities including fine art, applied art or design, and craft. The result is a career reference book with great collective strength.

Baring their souls and opening their hearts, the authors share their most personal moments, stories, and observations. You'll hear from the intern who could not hide her emotions, earning reprimand from her supervisors but appreciation from her patients . . . meet an alcoholic whose indomitable spirit helped her defy all the odds . . . experience the heartbreaking comedy of a Monday morning HIV clinic . . . be inspired by the oncology social worker who found a new love of life during her own struggle with breast cancer . . . and learn from the physician who realized that by witnessing her patients' courage she became a better physician.
Compelling, touching, and at times humorous, A Piece of My Mind offers a deeper understanding of physicians, patients, medicine, and the simple human act of helping another person.
"These stories, based in science, are transmitted to readers . . . after filtering through a human heart . . . consistently succeeds in bridging science and the humanities."
William H. Foege, MD, Emory University

I loved pages 55 and 56!.......2000-12-30
There seems to be quite a disparity in the quality of the prose. Although some stories were interesting, most were hackneyed. However, the story on page 55, entitled Hands On, is certainly of a professional demeanor. The problem with a collection of essays from different authors is not merely the variation in style but quality. I would much prefer to see a book filled with this one authors essay's. The others need tighter editing.
The heart and soul of medicine.......2000-12-16
Roxanne K. Young, the editor of this book, is Director of the Department of Medical Humanities of the Journal of the American Medical Association. As a practicing physician, each week I and many of my colleagues turn first to the Journal's "A Piece of My Mind" column from which the essays in the book come. Mostly written by physicians, essays also come from other health care professionals, patients, families, and others. In reading this work, the reader will find the hopes, fears, feelings, dreams, concerns, and clear and poignant observations of those who heal. If you desire to know not just the science of medicine, but its heart and soul, read this book.
Book Description
Plenty of people have come up to me over the years and said, "You ought to write a book." My response has always been to ask them to imagine they are a hairdresser. All day they work in a salon, cutting hair, coloring hair, styling hair. Now, I ask, "When you go home at night do you want to cut hair, color hair and style hair?" The last thing I wanted to do after a long day in the newsroom was construct sentences, edit paragraphs and compile a manuscript. Then one day I had an awakening. All those words I had been stringing together in columns in The Patriot-News since 1989 were just hanging around in a computer library. A few were clipped from newspapers and shoved in people's drawers. Some dangled from magnets on refrigerators. Why not gather a bunch of them together and create a book? And so this work began taking shape. What I have gathered here are columns written over the years about the joys and sorrows that come from caring about someone and about the changes I've observed as I've passed from child to adult, from daughter to mother to grandmother.

Highly recommended.......1999-07-28
A very illuminating look at medicine from behind the scenes. I read it years ago, & it has really stuck with me so I was looking for a copy of my own to reread & to show to others. It's a collection of essays, mostly by doctors but also by patients, other healthcare workers, etc. The topics are eclectic, ranging from male chauvinism to the doctor-patient relationship to euthanasia, & I recommend it highly to anyone who is interested in our medical system & how it impacts the lives of everyone who comes in contact with it.

Book Description
After enthusiastically joining the Navy with the hope of becoming an electrician, Carl Clark was told that black sailors could only be mess attendants, those sailors who served and cleaned up after the white officers. Threatened with a court-martial and possible prison time if he refused, Clark had no choice but to comply. Thus began a twenty-two-year career, in which he saw much of the world, earned promotions and commendations, and was awarded a Purple Heart for his courage on the USS Aaron Ward, the World War II destroyer. In this memoir, Clark writes not only of his experiences growing up poor during the lean Depression years, but also of his struggles as an African American sailor during a time of extreme racial segregation in the armed forces, and of his fellow black sailors, given the most hazardous duties aboard ship, who died heroically for a country that treated them so unfairly.

A Clear View of Unheralded American Heroes.......2001-07-30
Pieces from My Mind provides a close-up, first hand look at the life and times of one of a group of hardworking, heroic Americans few of us have ever heard of. I especially appreciated the fact it was not just a "blood and guts", "damn the torpedoes" WWII tome. The first chapters explain the development of the author's character, which become apparent later in the book.
I truly enjoyed the book and found it an informative and sensitive story of an African-American man's journey through life.

Short, sweet stories! Cannot wait to read more from this author. My favorite was "Liberation of Buchenwald" in which she injected a personal touch to one of the most trying times in history.
