Book Description
Jonathan Kingdon, one of the foremost authorities on African mammals, has written and illustrated this new field guide which sets new standards in African mammalogy. The author covers all the known species of African land mammal in a concise text providing full information on identification, distribution, ecology, evolutionary relationships, and conservation status. The focus is always on the mammals as seen in the field and on their ecology and evolutionary interrelationships. Introductory profiles summarize the characteristics of the various mammal groups, and the author simplifies many of the more complex groups of mammals by referencing genera. Twelve newly recognized species of bushbaby, fourteen newly named baboons, guenons, and mangabeys and nine newly described colobus monkeys contribute to a modern treatment of the monkeys. New species of bats, rodents, and fox as well as a fully revised listing of the duikers, squirrels and genets are included. Kingdon combines his long personal experience of life in Africa and his artistic talent with the best that modern natural history and biological science can offer. With over 480 color pictures and 280 maps covering some 1,100 mammal species, this book is an essential companion to all visiting Africa or with an interest in the mammals of the continent.
Key Features:
- Employs the most up-to-date classification and lists all 1,150 known species
- Focuses on mammals as seen in the field and in their evolutionary interrelationships
Customer Reviews:
An excellent book for wildlife study.......2007-06-08
This book is beautifully illustrated and the text explains clearly the animals life style, habitat and diet. Brilliant.
A must for African Animal lovers.......2007-04-11
Having seen a dilapidated old copy of this book in the hands of our safari guide,in Tanzania whose knowledge was unbelievable, we just had to have one when we got home. The information contained is unsurpassed.Kingdon's research into the genetic background and the locations of the animals is amazing.Illustrations, diagrams etc. very reader friendly. A great book.
About the Best Currently, but Could Be Improved.......2004-06-17
First let me say that in general I find this book excellent, and highly recommend it to anyone interested in the mammalian fauna of Africa.
It is very comprehensive, covering every single species of African mammals with the exception of bats, rodents, insectivores, elephant-shrews and hyrraxes, which are usually represented by one species for each genus. But every single genus is represented, and of rodents, every species of squirrel is dealt with separately.
The information accompanying each species is very detailed and appears up to date.
Now for the shortcomings:
1) The illustrations are next to the description of each species. Given how detailed/long the texts are, this means that usually there are just 1 or 2 species shown on each page, so to compare all antelopes you must look through a hundred pages or so - not very practical in a field guide!
2) Maps are often pages away from the text and illustration, with no reference to their whereabouts. I often thought there was no map for a species/genus, only to find it pages away, combined with the map for another taxon.
3) While illustrations are identified by the species' English name, the maps are confusingly id'ed by Latin names only. If you aren't familiar with the latter, it takes some cross-reference to find out which species' range you are looking at.
4) The illustrations vary so much in standard that it is hard to believe they were drawn by one person... While most are quite good, even excellent and life-like, others are quite awful, either showing animals with stiff, straight limbs/bodies as if drawn with a ruler (like the Crowned Monkey) or in highly unnatural positions (like the Potto with the limbs twisted out, or the Cheetah standing up like a circus horse).
Note that a cheaper, condensed version of this guide, without the first 3 shortcomings listed above and more practical for field use is now available: The Kingdon Pocket Guide to African Mammals. It is probably the book you would want to take to Africa while keeping this one at home for reference.
Outstanding Guide.......2004-04-27
This guide book is simply one of the best regional mammal guide books in existance. As well as providing good descriptions of the mammals, it looks at them in the context of their evolutionary history. It does contain a few errors, as is to be expected in a book of this scope. For example, servals are reported from Egypt, where, as far as I am aware, they have not been recorded in historic times. Overall, however, the book is outstanding.I used it throughout a 14-month trip to Africa and it never let me down.
A very useful guide with many lovely illustrations.......2002-12-11
This is a great reference for animals, the guide may not be as thorough as some, but in my opinion, it's thorough enough for the average person..and then some. It has detailed information on the animals it lists, and goes beyond many field guides in this respect. I definitely recommend this book for someone who wants a useful book, loaded with well-drawn color pictures.

Book Description
FIFA, the International Football Federation, celebrates 100 years of soccer with a beautiful gift book that every fan will cherish--the first official publication on the sport's history, and the most comprehensive and wide-ranging. It's filled with rare and breathtaking images, interviews with soccer's top personalities, and other material from FIFA's extensive archives.
FIFA has spared no expense in creating this lavish volume, which celebrates a century of soccer--and the care shows on every page. It's the fullest, most fabulous history ever of this global sport, beginning with the ancient ball games that were soccer's direct ancestors, moving on to the establishment of official rules (in a London pub in 1863), and continuing right to the present day. All the richness and diversity of this extraordinary sport come through in an examination of different styles of play, various stadiums throughout the world, the international media coverage, and the growing importance of women's teams. Money, politics, personalities, fan mania, the youthful players who are soccer's future--they're all here. Above all, there are the amazing pictures, which not only capture the excitement of the game (with players caught flying in midair, and even upside down) but also feature posters, images from magazines and newspapers, and paintings by soccer-loving artists. Like the sport itself, it's simply magnificent.

Customer Reviews:
WOW- This is an amazing book!.......2005-05-05
Wow..."From High School to Med School" is an amazing book. Penned by two college students who are now brilliant and accomplished physicians themselves, it is THE authoritative source on accelerated medical programs. It is entertaining, yet detailed and informative. It beats any of the other books out there on this subject. Without a doubt, this book is a MUST-HAVE if you are even considering this option!
Not Worth It!.......2003-06-15
After reading this book and "Medical School from High School"(by A.M. Ilyas), Dr. Ilyas' book was, without a doubt, a better buy. Raju and Yanofski's book does not include enough details to lead any high school student in the right direction. Dr. Ilyas's book is more informative, straightforward and the thorough index of schools in the end is a priceless resource! "From High School to Medical School" is not worth your time or money. There are much better books to use if considering applying to any accelerated med. program.
Great book! Must have for college apps........2002-05-27
I bought this book a few months back, and it's great. I heard about these fast track medical programs from my friends and they recommended this book. I especially liked the candidate profiles, application timeline, and easy to read format. It's definitely going to be my source when I apply to colleges next year. Though it says medical programs, much of the info in this book can be used for other stuff. One of my best academic investements.
Lacks Detail.......2002-05-12
Although well written, this book didn't contain any of the specific information about accelerated medical programs that I was looking for. For example, do I have to take the MCAT at Brown University? How is the social life at Alabama? What are the minimum requirements for each program? Which programs accept out of state students? "The High School Doctor" by Koneru, Wang, and Arora answered all of these questions and more. However, I still recommend "From High School to Med School" to purchase as a supplementary source. It was well written.
Not bad.......2002-05-10
As a prospective possible accelerated medical school applicant next year, I found this book to be very helpful in finding out what programs were out there and information on how to contact each individual school or program. However, I wished that the authors went into more detail with regards to campus life on and off campus at each college or university. This type of information could have been helpful for me in narrowing down which schools I should consider applying for next year. Unfortunately, I had to find other books or resources to get this sort of information.

Customer Reviews:
Early Beardsley .......2004-11-24
This is a remarkable work. First, it is Beardsley's earliest commission, illustrations for Malory's classic. For that reason alone, it will interest fans of Beardsley's drawings.
Second, and what really fascinates me, is that Beardsley developed his drawing style visibly over the course of the 580+ works in this project. When I look at the drawings for the first few chapters, they seem harsh and angular (p.22 for example). In other samples (e.g. p.18-19), Beardsley uses textures to generate tonal effects. By the end of the book, his drawings are much closer to his more familiar style. The lines are more graceful, and there is less use of the middle tones - broad solid blacks and whites dominate.
This is certainly a book for the Beardsley fan. It is also a distinctive example for anyone unsure of what "an artist's development" refers to.
Just a small warning, though - this contains only fragments of the Malory text, and many of the drawings do not appear with the printing that defined their original context. This is about Beardsley's drawings, not about the book in which they appeared.

A good book with very detailed information........1998-05-27
This book is packed with information on some of the larger cichlids. It contains a lot of information not usually found in other aquarium-books I have read such as data from water samples on different water types.
Every speicie is listed with information on breading, geographical location, author, water tempratures, specific traits, description of natural environment and similar speicies. The Photos are very good.
I recommend this book to anyone who wants to learn more about American LARGE cichlids.

The Standard Old Bottle Price Guide.......2000-05-02
Have an old bottle? Want to know what it is worth? Then the Standard Old Bottle Price Guide is a good place to look.
This bottle guide clearly describes the words, letters and numbers embossed on a bottle or the bottle label making identification easy. An example is "Abbott's Bitters: on base: C.W. Abbot & Co., Baltimore on shoulder; machine made; 8"; amber. $30-40."
The Standard Old Bottle Price Guide covers most bottles, including those early bitter bottles that began surfacing when England's George II was on the throne (1727-1760). At the height of the patent medicine phase, drugstores in the United States sold about 365 million bottles of elixirs known as "cures" in a variety of bottles. Most are collectible today.
Though the author died while completing the manuscript for this book, it adequately covers these sought-after glass bottles: poison, soda,, mineral water, gin, ink, and perfume. The book even devotes a few pages to fruit jars.
This guide is a good addition to any bottle collector's library

Book Description
An essential reference to gardening in hot and cold dry climates.
Gardening where summers are hot and prone to periods of drought, or where winters are snowy one week and freezing rain the next, is best managed by xeriscaping -- dryland gardening techniques that favor not only water conservation but also the conservation of time, energy and other resources.
Xeriscaping enthusiasts exist throughout North America wherever the climate calls for dryland gardening, from the Great Plains prairies to the California desert.
Dryland Gardening explains time-tested strategies:
- Coping with limited access to water
- Dealing with invasive plants
- Dealing with trees under stress
- Nurturing groundcovers and grasses
- Starting bulbs, perennials and vines
- Growing vegetables, herbs and annuals.
This book includes both practical advice for dry-climate gardeners as well as an extensive planting list for grasses and groundcovers, bulbs, perennials and vines, vegetables and annuals, herbs, roses and shrubs.
Each plant entry provides:
- Common and botanical names
- Detailed descriptions
- Planting instructions, care and maintenance.
Dryland Gardening celebrates a resilient garden with a beauty that requires fewer resources and less time.
Customer Reviews:
A real problem-solver for any seeking to produce a beautiful garden under today's drier conditions.......2005-08-06
As the planetary weather patterns and overall environment warms, so garden plants which typically did well in prior decades are now suffering from hotter summers, requiring even the most experienced gardener to try new plants which have a greater range of tolerance to warmer conditions. Gardening writer Jennifer Bennett has already produced several award-winning titles, but Dryland Gardening: Plants That Survive And Thrive In Tough Conditions is broader-based than most, and provides alternative plant choices for all kinds of dry conditions. Organized by type of plant: bulbs, grasses, groundcovers and vines, and even herbs, Dryland Gardening is a real problem-solver for any seeking to produce a beautiful garden under today's drier conditions.
