Customer Reviews:
Should have been a booklet.......2007-07-28
This book has some really good merits. It does give you some good shooting tips. It talks about aiming, position, trigger squeeze, equipment, practice, etc. I even used some of it's advice last fall to successfully complete a hunt. The books not bad, it's just not great. At least, it could have been a lot better. Not by adding more information, but buy trimming -a lot- of fat.
The first 7 chapters (about 1/4 of the book) are about the history of guns and various cartridges. Is it interesting? Sure. Does it help one become a more accurate shooter/hunter. Nope. Next, the author talks about equipment. Again, there is good information in there but it's surrounded by so much cruft that it can be hard to find the actual good advice hidden in the "look how much I know about guns and famous shooters".
Once you do get to the meat of it, he gives good advice and it's worth the read. It's obvious he has years of hunting experience and can probably teach a thing or two to anyone who feels they need this book. But there was so much superfluous information that I actually read 1/2 of this book and put it down for a year and half before finishing it this last week. The second half is more to the point, but he can still go off on tangents (even interesting ones like Annie Oakley and Ad Topperwien) that really don't equip you to become a better shot.
While this book is good, it should have been about 120 pages shorter and 1/2 the price.
Excellent read, informative.......2007-07-15
This book was a big surprise! Not only was it jam packed with great information and experiences, it actually was very well written and enjoyable to read. Most of these info books are dry, many are useless or have very little new "meat". This one, I just could not put it down, like a great novel or account. Even the stuff that we have all seen before was enjoyable to read the way it was reviewed here. I highly recommend and I will be sending 2 of these off as gifts to my other hunting/ gun buddies.
Book Description
The Greek root of school means leisure.
A language where hearse and rehearse have the same root and the word dunce comes from a great philosopher, English has hundreds of every day words that originated or acquired their meaning in unusual ways. Dictionaries don't have the space to tell us all the mysteries, but now Dr. Funk, with humor and insight, tells us the strange and intriguing stories of hundreds of words and how they came to be a part of our language.
Customer Reviews:
You can learn something while reading for fun.......2005-03-28
I have always loved to explore word origins, which is why I love this book. While many of the origins are what you would expect, there are a few gems whose origin is most unusual. The word origins also show what a mongrel the English language is, with words developed using input from every corner of Europe, the Islamic areas of North Africa and Asia and even as far away as British India. It was fascinating to learn how so many of our words had a different form in one language and was altered two or three times before reaching the final form that we know today. I strongly recommend this to anyone interested in word origins or who just wants to learn something while doing some recreational reading.
Lots of fun and entertating.......2001-07-08
I reviewed this book a few years ago but now that I have lived with it I think it is interesting and fun to read. The origin of many idioms and phrases is entertaining.
I've wanted my own copy for years and years.......2000-08-26
Today I again wished I still had access to THEREBY HANGS A TALE. I had read most of it years ago while staying with a friend and have missed its delightful insights into how our language grows and changes. Each word's origin is explained with great humor and insight. This time, however, instead of just feeling blue for not having it, I searched Amazon.com [bless them and their search engine] and by golly, Ollie, I found it. I can't wait to lay eyes and mind again on its wondrous pages. If you don't already love words and their deeper meanings, this may stimulate you into a grand new experience with one of life's simple pleasures.
Book Description
"Splat--ouch--Boom--ouch--Pow! That hurts. Presenting work by 35 nationally and internationally recognized contemporary artists who have incorporated the imagery, technique, or style of the comics in their work, Splat Boom Pow! makes evident the shift from traditional literary narratives to a visual language of myth as seen in comic strips over the last 40 years. Taking an in-depth look at the current phenomenon of cartoon-referencing work, its connection to the pop art movement of the 1960s, and the social and cultural factors that have shaped our understanding of the comics as a form of popular communication, Splat Boom Pow! includes work by three generations of artists, among them Laylah Ali, Michael Ray Charles, Roy Lichtenstein, Takashi Murakami, Elizabeth Murray, Chris Ofili, Sigmar Polke, Peter Saul, Kenny Scharf, Jim Shaw, and Andy Warhol."
Book Description
The book we've all been waiting for!
Not only provides a definitive answer to the controversial question "Can cats be vegan?" (they can!), but through examples, philosophical musings, and personal stories, explains why those in the ethical vegan community MUST feed their cats and dogs a vegan diet!
Discusses relative merits of meat vs. vegan diets from a number of perspectives (ethical, health, environmental, etc.), and gives practical advice for making a successful switch for your cats and dogs.
Customer Reviews:
I wasn't sure what to expect.......2007-07-17
I picked up this book originally simply because I don't just believe hearsay, I must be given and argument that I feel is worth my time. I was apprehensive, as would be expected. Why do people go about spewing information that they simply heard from somebody that is not an expert? While Gillen is not a DVM, he sells vegan cat food for a living and at this point in time probably has many cats living with him. Note: Living. They are vegans (or mostly, considering the story of his male cat with ailments unable to be treated at the time he wrote the book.) and ALIVE. Seems as though this guy might have some experience, rather than just one observation of a cat chasing a feather on a stick therefore leading one to the conclusion it is a vicious carnivore that can only be sated with meat.
I once believed that cats were doomed to eat meat forever, and so I have been reluctant to adopt one myself. Yes, I would not have a cat simply because I cannot support even the smallest corners of the slaughterhouses. Now I'm convinced that I can save a kitten's life and farmed animals as well.
I highly recommend this book to all vegans, all pet-lovers, and especially those vegan pet lovers that are still sitting on the fence. This book even sites PURINA for an argument pro-vegetarian cat food.
Also, vegans, why isn't your dog a vegan yet? That's not even worth writing a book about. Dogs make better vegans than humans because they don't complain and their food is already balanced to be healthy. If you're a vegan, your dog can be too, it doesn't make sense otherwise. I don't have a vegan dog, but I know a couple, and they have better breath too. ;)
Scientifically unsound, ethically questionable........2007-04-24
There's a great deal of preaching but very little science in this book. Mr. Gillen cannot cite a single controlled study that conclusively demonstrates that a vegetarian (or vegan) diet supplemented with additives (taurine, in this case) is safe and healthy for cats. While it is possible with the correct knowledge and ingredients to formulate a diet for cats that excludes meat products, in the hands of a careless or uninformed person such an attempt will only lead to illness, blindness and an early death for a cat.
Mr. Gillen makes quite an issue of the fact that his stand on vegetarianism is a moral decision. For a moral choice to be genuine, it must be voluntary, and it appears that Mr. Gillen has yet to find a cat that has made the same moral choice he has. Forcing an animal with over fifteen million years of carnivorous evolutionary behavior built into its system to accept a diet that is completely unnatural to its physiology is is no moral triumph; it's simply another instance of anthropocentric totalitarianism - of trying to make animals more like US because WE believe we're the inherently superior organism.
Mr. Gillen would serve the ecosystem better if he would concentrate his efforts solely toward humans, and leave the smaller animals to make their own moral decisions.
Can't convert humans? Then coerce a helpless animal..........2007-03-19
Overall, this is probably the best psychotherapy book around for Vegans who need to redirect their frustrations from humans (who have a choice in their eating ethics) to their pets (who don't). Jed has written a reasonably sound guide that enables any conscientious food-fascist to coerce his or her pet into accepting meals that they would never even SNIFF if they were given a choice.
If you harbor a need to bully a helpless animal into accepting a completely unnatural diet in order to compensate for your feelings of inadequacy at being unable to convince anyone else in your life of the superiority of the Vegan lifestyle, this is the book you've been waiting for.
Check with your vet first.......2007-02-01
.. and he or she will tell you that cats are indeed obligate carnivores. I wholeheartedly agree with the reasoned points in the review titled "Well-intentioned but wrong-headed" (or something to that effect): while vegans (and vegetarians) may be conflicted about feeding meat to their cats, you are doing your cat/s a great disservice by depriving them of meat. Supplementing a cat's vegan diet with taurine will still not address their nutritional needs: cats need a very high-protein (animal protein), low carbohydrate diet, and a vegan diet cannot provide this, even when supplemented with taurine. I am no fan of factory-farming, and am a strict vegetarian, but compromising a cat's health is not an acceptable form of protest against the pet food- and meat-production industries. I'd recommend purchasing free-range organic meat and preparing your own cat food (see "The Natural Cat" for recipes), rather than depriving cats of the animal protein they must have in order to be healthy. That our cats need meat is an uncomfortable contradiction for vegetarian/vegan cat owners, but given the incredible problems with cat overpopulation, abuse, and neglect in this country, I believe taking in, and caring well for cats is the ethical choice, even if they need to eat meat.
Way too self righteous.......2006-11-23
I've been a vegan for about 15 years and recently started my new kitten on a vegan diet. I was hoping for a book that explained a cat's dietary requirements, gave pros and cons about feeding a cat a vegan diet, and offered tips on making it work. Instead I found a moralistic, argumentative book that was not very helpful. Not a lot of practical information, a lot of questionable premises, and a lot of dishonesty in the arguments. For example, he quotes a well known "natual healing" vet to bolster his arguments, but doesn't mention that this vet, in the book he quotes, specifically says that he does not support a vegan diet. Mostly this is an book about animal ethics based on the author's understanding of logic. The author paints himself as an alcoholic who doesn't care much about health, and while he makes a lot of assertions about the diet being healthy, he doesn't point to a lot of evidence to back it up. In fact, he's rather dismissive of the whole idea of gathering evidence, speciously contending that this necessarily involves cruel cats-in-cages kind of studies. Plus, the author is very condescending and insulting in tone toward people who hesitate and deliberate over the option. At the end he asks people to "meet me halfway," but he's consistently critical of people who make compromises.

Book Description
They came from Japan -- those larger-than-life monsters that terrorized Tokyo and then stomped their way into America's households and hearts. The success of Godzilla, Mothra, and Rodan has inspired action figures, dolls, plush toys, model kits, comic books, posters, and records. This thorough guide covers five decades' worth of collectibles based on these appealing monsters.
Customer Reviews:
DON'T PANIC...IT'S ONLY GODZILLA!.......2002-04-02
Dana Cain's book is an enjoyable, well written guide to an increasingly popular sub-category of monster toy collecting. No book on pricing collectibles is likely to remain current for long, and its real value lies in providing the reader with a pictorial overview of its subject. COLLECTING JAPANESE MOVIE MONSTERS succeeds very well in this, and its text provides some lively historical background into that singularly odd period in cinema where colossal creatures used Tokyo as a ring and we watched guilt-free. Note to "serious" Japanese movie monster collectors: don't take it all so seriously. Those responsible for the men in the monster suits didn't.
A good book with info not found elsewhere.......1999-07-26
While not perfect, this book is better than the earlier reviews said. The book is very well illustrated, and most of the pictures are very clear and sharp. To say that the pictures come mainly from a Toys-R-Us is simply false: The vast majority of the toys pictured are items not even distributed in the U.S., to say nothing of the movie posters, magazines, etc.
Any price guide is eventually going to be out of date. Many of the prices in this book are still current, although there are several that are not. I did find a couple of errors, where a picture was incorrectly labeled. To be fair, Sean Linkenback's book has similar errors and in many examples his prices are more dated than Ms. Cain's, plus her book includes items not even listed in his.
Yes, Linkenback's book is more in-depth, but it has its flaws too. As with other kinds of price guides, thinking of a single edition as being all encompassing or definitive is a mistake.
Bad........1999-01-30
This is not the first price guide on these toys. Sean Linkenback's was the first and much better than this.... Ms./Mr. Cain should research the subject before saying what prices are. Linkenback is a respected dealer of Japanese toys and thus infitely more qualified for an endeavor such as this. Cain, you should take a research class.
Not as good as other books on the subject.......1999-01-09
I was really looking forward to this book, and unfortunately con not find much to recommend about it. The listings are woefully incomplete and many times inaccurate. Photography is only so-so, and is mainly filled with items from the local Toys-R-Us. A better book to get would be "The Unauthorized Guide to Godzilla Collectibles". The one bright spot is the 14 pages on Gamera, which while could be better is finally altogether under one cover.

John Marshall is THE toy guru, and his opinion is highly respected. This book is no exception. Informative, entertaining, and nostalgia all in one package. Really, not to be missed.
Book Description
Invasive Plants of the Upper Midwest is an informative, colorful, comprehensive guide to invasive species that are currently endangering native habitats in the region. It will be an essential resource for land managers, nature lovers, property owners, farmers, landscapers, educators, botanists, foresters, and gardeners.
Invasive plants are a growing threat to ecosystems everywhere. Often originating in distant climes, they spread to woodlands, wetlands, prairies, roadsides, and backyards that lack the biological controls which kept these plant populations in check in their homelands.
Invasive Plants of the Upper Midwest includes more than 250 color photos that will help anyone identify problem trees, shrubs, vines, grasses, sedges, and herbaceous plants (including aquatic invaders). The text offers further details of plant identification; manual, mechanical, biological, and chemical control techniques; information and advice about herbicides; and suggestions for related ecological restoration and community education efforts. Also included are literature references, a glossary, a matrix of existing and potential invasive species in the Upper Midwest, an index with both scientific and common plant names, advice on state agencies to contact with invasive plant questions, and other helpful resources.
The information in this book has been carefully reviewed by staffs of the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources Bureau of Endangered Resources and the University of Wisconsin-Madison Arboretum and other invasive plant experts.
Customer Reviews:
Tremendous Resource with a Story.......2006-05-22
We have been invaded and we are losing the war. Know thine enemy: Garlic mustard, buckthorn, reed canary grass, and honeysuckle. Read this book and you will know the major invasives, the lesser invasives, and how to attack them. Many color photos help with species identification. The cover photo of a woodland that is totally infested with garlic mustard will send a shiver up your spine.
In addition to the technical side, the book also explains the 'why we should care' part that is essential if we want to get action, especially by our elected officials.
The book itself is an example of what one person can do. The author was a self-described suburban housewife who cared about the local environment, but didn't know how to identify the invasive plants and there wasn't a handy resource guide. So she wrote this one! Sadly Betty Czarpata died of ovarian cancer in 2003 when the book was nearly complete but not yet published.
Winner of the Wisconsin Council on Invasive Species 2005 Invader Crusader Award.
Excellent Comprehensive Manual.......2006-02-28
This guide has invasives divided into multiple categories ranging from exotics that are of major concern to natives that are sometimes of concern. It has detailed identification of each species and gives the options for control, including mechanical, chemical, and biological. The control information includes the details on chemical concentration, time of year, and temperature. There is a lot of incorrect information on the internet on invasives control and this book is a good source of reliable information.

Book Description
This volume documents the proceedings of the Second International Symposium on Adhesion Aspects of Polymeric Coatings held in Newark, New Jersey, May 25-26, 2000. Since the first symposium, held in 1981, there had been tremendous research activity relative to the adhesion aspects of polymeric coatings. Polymeric coatings are used for a variety of purposes. Irrespective of the intended purpose of the coating, it must adequately adhere to the underlying substrate, otherwise delamination and other undesirable phenomena occur. So the need to understand the factors which influence adhesion of polymeric coatings and to control it to a desirable level is quite patent. This volume contains a total of 13 papers, which were all properly peer reviewed, revised and edited before inclusion. Furthermore, the authors were asked to update their manuscripts, so the information contained in this book should be current and fresh.
The topics covered in this book include: factors influencing adhesion of polymeric coatings; ways to improve adhesion; formation and relevance of interphase in practical adhesion; adhesion/cohesion in painted plastics; imaging of polymer surfaces; effect of substrate residue (smut) on coating processes; surface treatment of metals and glass by silanes; surface modification of polyphenylene sulfide plastics; resin bonding in dentistry; measurement of internal stresses in polymeric coatings; effect of steel surface composition on adhesion of paint; wet adhesion of coatings on wood; and modified tape test to measure adhesion of coatings. This book will be of interest to everyone interested or involved in the arena of polymeric coatings. It should also provide some new ideas as to how to control adhesion durability of coatings in different environments.
