Book Description
Shacked Up
A Lifestyle Thing
The dream might be dead, but at least Rich gets to keep the flat. Okay, he's not going to be a multimillionaire by the time he's twenty, but he's still making money and he's living in his boss's London apartment rent-free. So he's got his own place, he's got the gorgeous, if high-maintenance, Portia (well, almost) -- and he's got total freedom.
You can't put a price on that.
Trouble is, now he's got Bonny, too. She landed on his doorstep one night looking to escape from her controlling mother. She needed a place to stay, and Rich could hardly say no. But with Bonny hanging about indefinitely, will Rich find his independence -- not to mention his relationship with Portia -- compromised?
The second book in the edgy new trilogy from Kate Cann.
Customer Reviews:
Shacked Up even better than first.......2006-06-01
Shacked Up is an extremely well written contemporary novel by Kate Cann. Cann uses universal literary techniques such as detailed characterization and unique diction. In addition, a strong plot and picture-perfect imagery make this an enjoyable book to read.
The characterization becomes apparent in the first few pages of the story. Immediately the reader knows how Bonny feels, and that it is because of her crazy mother, Tigger. Also, as a reader I knew exactly how Rich felt every single second throughout the book.
The great thing about the vocabulary is the British words thrown in. This story does take place in London, or somewhere near, so an England dialect makes for a unique reading experience.
The purpose for Kate Cann to publish Shacked Up is for the entertainment value. She does an amazing job in entertaining the readers. Every page made me more and more interested in what was going to happen next.
The ideal audience for Shacked Up is teenagers who normally do not enjoy reading. She does a great job with attracting that type of person. This, along with the other books in the series, is the only book I have ever been able to not put down, and actually read outside of school for fun.
It Keeps Getting Better.......2004-12-13
This is the second novel of the trilogy. This novel is even better than the first. Now, Rich is on his own and readers get to see everything that comes with it. Cann is an excellent writer and keeps the reader hooked. I can't do anything until I finish reading her novels. I was even reading this novel on Thanksgiving Day! I love how Cann can use imagery, vocabulary, and a good strong plot to make a novel that's intriguing! This is a must read!
AWSOME.......2004-03-05
i love it. this is a GREAT author!!! and this book makes me want the third sooooo much. i hate boring books but this is the opposite. its about a 17 yearold british boy who moves out and lives in his bosses flat in london. he's in a relashionship with the gorgeous portia. but theres a problem. he now has a new flatmate bonny. so how will things go. it's such a great book and i suggest thet you read it.

Book Description
The book provides an updated overview of molecular analysis of human tissues, and the impact this analysis has on diagnosis and prognosis of human diseases. Special emphasis is placed on human cancer and the future directions of the field. Methods of handling clinical tissue samples, including the impact of handling on subsequent molecular analysis, are also discussed. In addition, detailed protocols for molecular analysis of DNA, RNA and protein, with special emphasis on molecular analysis of highly complex human tissue samples containing mixtures of cell populations, are provided.
Book Description
Comprehensive review of detonation explores the "simple theory" and experimental tests of the theory; flow in a reactive medium; steady detonation; the nonsteady solution; and the structure of the detonation front. Many simple cases are worked out for illustration.
Customer Reviews:
An introduction to the hydrodynamics of explosions.......2007-03-28
This book presents an introductory overview, both theoretical and observational, of the hydrodynamics of detonation. A working knowledge of the physics of compressible/supersonic flows is assumed by the authors and is necessary before approaching the material in this book. As the back cover states, detonation is the form of combustion `in which energy transfer is by mass flow in strong compression waves'. The authors start by deriving simple equations for shocks and then extending to formalism to include the release of chemical energy and changes in adiabatic index behind the shock (the so-called Zeldovich - von Neumann - Doering model). Even in simple cases this can become a virtually intractable problem. The authors make every attempt to compare theory with experiments, and point out when (and sometimes why) they diverge. More advanced topics discussed at length in the book include non-steady solutions and micro-structure behind the shock. This is an advanced/specialized book geared toward taking an advanced student (physicist/chemist/engineer) who already has a working knowledge of compressible flows to doing research in detonation. There is a heavy emphasis on practical interpretation in this book, the authors don't get bogged down with too much analytic analysis that often obsfuscates basic ideas. There are also lots of good black and white pictures to illustrate important points.
Book Description
Set against the backdrop of South Africa's troubled history, natural beauty, and complex contemporary society, this stunning debut novel tells the story of forty-year-old Kate Jensen's reluctant return from the States to her homeland to seek the truth about her family's history and her mother's paranoia. Nature Lessons, already a book-club favorite, reads like a cross between a memoir and a mystery.
Customer Reviews:
An excellent novel - first, or otherwise.......2003-09-18
Brasfield creates a fascinating mystery out of her protagonist's desire to understand a painful upbringing. She weaves together information about Kate Jensen's mother's mental illness, her country's political climate, and the oddly over-zealous attentions of her uncle, Oom Piet. Brasfield's management of a mentally ill character is particularly impressive; Kate's mother is neither simple nor predictable. If you enjoy reading about politics, South Africa, relationships between men and women, family interactions - or even if you just like a good mystery - read Nature Lessons.
A Haunting Journey.......2003-06-28
It is not often that one finds the combination of beautiful writing and a compelling story. Nature Lessons is that and more. Set against the exotic yet turbulent atmosphere of South Africa during apartheid, we meet the young Kate Jensen, who recounts her life with a mentally ill mother. Woven in with the story of young Kate, is the journey of the older Kate who returns to South Africa to search for her mother. Their stories create a tapestry rich in the lasting effects of cultural, political, and psychological dynamics on a young girl. It grips the reader from the first page and takes one on a haunting journey.
Amazing Details.......2003-06-24
Intriguing storyline and amazing use of description. Lynette is a first-class story teller and author. This is a book you won't want to put down.
A wonderful read.......2003-06-21
This is a great book. For those of you who loved Oprah's book club, this is much like her selections but not as grim. The story keeps you guessing, the characters are well drawn interesting people. The story is set mainly in South Africa and illustrates the effects of Aparteid on a society from a child's perspective.
NATURE LESSONS: Lessons well worth learning.......2003-06-12
This beautifully written novel highlights the dilemma of a dysfuncional mother/child relationship and the havoc it creates in the development of the child. The perspective of the daughter grown and the daughter as an adult that Brasfield takes, elevates the story to far more than a good read. It is food for thought so intense that there isn't a page that the reader will not nod and say, "Yes. I've been there. I know just how she feels."
Brasfield poses the eternal question of how to judge a child's assessment of its mother and who can define what is abuse and what is rational behavior. She also points up the dilemma of judging mental desease in the context of the times. For example, the mother in Nature Lessons is living in South Africa where many of her paranoid delusions have basis in fact. Who is to say that she is not right? Who can really know if the government is not indeed spying on her and her family. This is a book you cannot put down and when you reach the last page, you will want to reopen it and start reading this poetic prose once more. The issues presented are those that no one can forget. We all are living them and battling their effects throughout our lives.

Informative and Loving.......2005-09-13
This book, truely, covers the life and legacy of Bahiyyih Khanum. A person whose qualities call for close examination. Janet Khan, using all available means for research, in spite of the cultural norms of a women in the mid-19th century Persia, succeeds in portraying the "Greatest Holy Leaf" in a way that makes me fall in love. Her plight and perseverance are something to be admired, especially in context to her historical upbringings. Highly recommended read.
excellent book.......2005-08-15
This book is a very important book for those studying the history of the Baha'i Faith. The writer opens a vivid window that allows us to view the critical role Bahiyyih Khanum played in the growth of her Father, Baha'u'llah's faith, the Baha'i Faith, in the very turbulent years of its beginning. I enjoyed it immensely.
Customer Reviews:
Great reading from page 1!.......2000-02-14
History records major events that often changed or will change human events. History is packed with stories about famous people and places that every child knows about, from Washington to Lincoln to Kennedy. But what about those people in history that make a difference and never get noticed?
Written by his daughter, what we find in this book is more than history its living history. Smith captures the reader with insight only a person this close to the subject can bring to life. Just the lessons about the Tuskegee Airmen is reason enough to read this book.
Talk a walk through the 200-page life history of one of the greatest men in aviation history. Honored by a number of people, Charles McGee is a true national hero for all ages and all people. The sad part of the whole story is how the history books missed the group of men who changed aviation history.
In a day when it is a sad reality that most American history books fail to portray any African American as a hero in the history books, it is great to know that people like Charlene McGee Smith can help us to remember that history is colorblind. Excellent reading for everyone!
A marvelous story about a Tuskegee Airman........1999-05-27
This is a wonderful story that chronicles the life of Col. Charles McGee who holds the record for the highest three-war total of fighter combat missions in US Air Force history. It is told through the eyes of his daughter who captures both the military experience as well as the human side of this story. We learn of the perseverance of this Tuskegee Airman who was able to overcome racist experiences and become an American hero. Part of the delight of this book is the personal rememberances by family and friends. Col. McGee flew combat missions and navigated racist attitudes and biases throughout his life. This account is about more than a distinguished military career,it is about family and the significant influence he had on his eldest daughter. We learn about his bravery but more importantly lessons about the value of family, character, and education shape a powerful message for all of us.
Book Description
This book explains why African countries have remained mired in a disastrous economic crisis since the late 1970s. It shows that dynamics internal to African state structures largely explain this failure to overcome economic difficulties rather than external pressures on these same structures as is often argued. Far from being prevented from undertaking reforms by societal interest and pressure groups, clientelism within the state elite, ideological factors and low state capacity have resulted in some limited reform, but much prevarication and manipulation of the reform process, by governments that do not really believe that reform will be effective.
Customer Reviews:
Best Book on African Development for Many Years.......2004-06-29
The Politics of Permanent Crisis is simply one of the best books on contemporary Africa to come out for ages. The author, who has been writing sensibly on Africa, political reform, and foreign aid issues for many years, takes on a whole range of often contradictory academic work to help explain why Africa has been unable to grow faster despite increasingly levels of external financial assistance. Van de Walle argues coherently that local politics within many African countries have combined with donor practices to militate against the fundamental changes required for African economies to take-off. Seen in this light, the lack of reforms and disappointing outcomes from foreign aid in Africa are not mysteries, but rather the logical outcomes of the incentives under which the various players operate. This is a seminal contribution to our understanding of Africa's economic and political dilemmas -- and an excellent complement to Bill Easterly's "The Elusive Quest for Growth". If there is any shortcoming in the book, it is a minor quibble that van de Walle seems too dismissive of the role of individual leaders in sparking recovery (e.g., surely, Jerry Rawlings and Yoweri Museveni deserve some personal credit for turning Ghana and Uganda around). This book is a must-read for anyone interested in Africa's development challenges and the role of the international community.
The Puzzle of African Exceptionalism.......2004-05-13
Nicolas van de Walle's prize-winning book explains the puzzle of African exceptionalism with an intelligent and nuanced framework. Focusing on the politics behind the seemingly permanent crisis, van de Walle explains the pervasive rise of neopatrimonial rule on the continent -- a political system that depends on patronage and clientelism, and which is a feature of many low-income, largely subsistence-based polities around the world. Van de Walle's dual training in economics and political science, and his extensive experience living and working in many of the countries of the sub-continent, make this book deep, broad, and credible. I've recommended it to many who want to understand what is behind their t.v. screens: why has poverty grown in Africa? Why is this the region most troubled by small-scale political wars? Its scholarly but accessible style, complimented by extensive footnotes and references, also make this an excellent book for students.
A Plagiarized Monograph: How the Academy Fails Africa .......2003-12-19
This book represents Nicolas van de Walle's attempts to characterise Africa's political economy in the era of 'partial reform' in comparative perspective. Unfortunately, this book which could have fulfilled an important lacunae in the field is largely a poorly thought out academic hustle. The analysis is full of mutually contradictory statements, and given the author's evident lack of familiarity with the cases he is comparing with S.S.A. his comparative analysis lacks any bite or merit. Nowhere is this more clear than in his comparisons between Africa and Latin America. For example, according to van de Walle Argentina is a considered 'especially' a case of committed and extensive reform.
Throughout the author cites and misrepresents work with which he is clearly unfamiliar and large sections are plagiarised from uncited sources. In particular, much of the book is plagiarized from my own work which van de Walle reviewed for Comparative Studiesd in Society and History. According to that review -which van de Walle claims was done after the submission of his monograph, but which he had received well before submission, - Africa is unque in the extent to which rent seeking by those close to the regimes characterizes reforms. It is, however, a central pillar of his monograph that this is a universal characteristic of reform.
The author also demonstrates a lack of familiarity with rudimentary social science concepts and cannot even distinguish for example between an African regime and an African State. These failings are glaring, and the book's neoliberal-ideological attempts to correct theoretical misunderstandings about the autonomy of the African state are thus rendered irrelevant. It is clear that van de Walle has never read Weber and does not even comprehend the monograph's key concept neo-patriminonialism.
The author, furthermore does not even have an awareness of the literature on interest groups and reforms, rendering his critique of this literature meaningless and ineffective if not downright dishonest. Any one with rudimentary familiarity of basic work such as Joan Nelson's, Przeworski's, Rodriks etc.. would be forced to conclude that this book is profoundly intellectually dihonest in the conclusions it draws.
Throughout the book, the author's personal value judgements are not accompanied by empirical support particularly where the author engages in the critique of other significant monographs in the discipline. For these reasons, despite sweeping pretense and fanfare the monograph fails to make a significant theoretical or empiraical contribution to the disciplines of comparative and African political economy.
Presently, the matter of this monograph is before the legal department of Cambridge University Press. Litigation is now immanent. I have been represented in this matter by Fraser Milner Casgrain and have now retained a litigator. If you purchase this book you are supporting wholesale [...] and moreover any royalties will eventually come to me along with damages. At any rate there are a range of other books which would serve you far better if you are trying to understand the political economy of Africa.

Book Description
The world is losing species and biodiversity at a rate unprecedented in history. The causes go deep, and the losses are driven by a complex array of social, economic, political and biological factors at different levels. Immediate causes, such as overharvesting, pollution and habitat change, have been well studied. But the socio-economic factors driving people to degrade their environment are less well understood.
This book examines the underlying causes. It provides analyses of a range of case studies around the world and integrates them into a new and interdisciplinary framework for understanding what is happening. From these results, the editors are able to derive policy conclusions and recommendations, for operational and institutional approaches to address the 'root causes' and reverse the current trends.
It makes an invaluable contribution to the understanding of all those - from ecologists and conservationists to economists and policy makers - working on one of the major challenges we face. Published in association with WWF
