great stuff!.......2007-09-21
I am new to writing IEPs and now writing the transition goals for a young adult program. This book has been so helpful in making sure everything is up to par. In fact, our IEP co-ordinator was impressed with my first efforts and has used some of my work in plan of care meetings.
Not bad for a beginner!
good for sped teachers.......2007-09-08
delivered in good time. I like this book paired with Writing Better IEPs by Barbara Bateman.
Pablum with a capital P !.......2007-07-09
You could boil this puppy down to a tablespoon full. Seriously, there was something of substance on a few pages. And it was good! But that was it. Was required text for me- says something either about the prof. or the institution. Look for something meatier!
Useful examples.......2007-06-05
I found the examples very useful, to give me a guideline when I'm creating my own IEP's.
Another great resource .......2007-03-24
Must have for any special ed teacher whether your are just starting out in the profession or you have been teaching for 15 years..This is a great tool.

A good guide on how to analyze ideas and synthesize new ones.......2007-05-01
Hart's material will benefit anyone who needs to develop and demonstrate their expertise on a topic. He describes how the review contributes to the defense of a research topic and its findings, at the master's and doctoral levels. He presents examples of what thesis and dissertation boards look for in research proposals and papers.
The book describes techniques to extract clues about theories and methods a researcher used. Hart provides excellent guidance on how to analyze the literature on a topic, develop a map of ideas, and synthesize a new contribution.
Anyone who wants to develop their skills as a researcher, or student, should definitely purchase this book. I also shared many of this book's insights with my friends, who are not researchers.
Although I strongly recommend the book, I only rate it 3 stars. The book is unorganized, and the writing is poor.
In an example from Chapter 4, Hart presents a table of 19 common fallacies. The first column presents the type of fallacy (in no logical or methodical order). He titles the second column "What it is and how to avoid it" but only the first entry presents any "how to avoid it" data. The remaining 18 entries have no advice on avoidance.
I also felt some diagrams present no useful information; and his prose rambles and repeats itself. In short, Hart gives us dynamite information, but it is frustrating to sort through its sloppy presentation.
Too little for the price.......2007-02-08
Foudn the text minimally helpful. Not full of insight but just common sense.
Cost is too high for the return.
Great Resource for the Dissertation.......2005-08-09
I found this book to be a great resource as I am doing research for my dissertation. It has helped me to look at the lit review in a new light and has given me several ideas of others avenues to search.
so good my advisor is going to use it .......2005-07-18
This book is great. It has all you need to complete a research paper at any level. I used it for my bachelor's project which, according to my advisor, is equivalent to a Master's thesis in content requirement. My advisor has asked me to lend him the book so he can use it to revise the current research manual supplied by the college. This book is easy to read and has a lot of useful tables and charts.
Great resource!.......2005-07-09
Great, current resource for writing a lit review. Especially appreciated the specific information about how to analyze and synthesize information.
Book Description
Shocked by the teenage violence she witnessed during the Rodney King riots in Los Angeles, Erin Gruwell became a teacher at a high school rampant with hostility and racial intolerance. For many of these students–whose ranks included substance abusers, gang members, the homeless, and victims of abuse–Gruwell was the first person to treat them with dignity, to believe in their potential and help them see it themselves. Soon, their loyalty towards their teacher and burning enthusiasm to help end violence and intolerance became a force of its own. Inspired by reading The Diary of Anne Frank and meeting Zlata Filipovic (the eleven-year old girl who wrote of her life in Sarajevo during the civil war), the students began a joint diary of their inner-city upbringings. Told through anonymous entries to protect their identities and allow for complete candor, The Freedom Writers Diary is filled with astounding vignettes from 150 students who, like civil rights activist Rosa Parks and the Freedom Riders, heard society tell them where to go–and refused to listen.
Proceeds from this book benefit the Freedom Writers Foundation, an organization set up to provide scholarships for underprivieged youth and to train teachers

READ THIS, THEN PASS IT ON TO A FRIEND !.......2007-08-07
A close friend kept bugging me to see the movie, "Freedom Writers." Finally, we watched it one afternoon, and she was right. It's a very good movie. After seeing the movie, I came home the same day, and ordered the book. The book is a collection of diary entries by high school students in the Long Beach area of L.A., right after the Rodney King riots. Some of their true stories are horrific and all are intense. These kids, who are 14, at the beginning of the book, have to deal with abusive or neglecting parents, parents strung out on drugs, pressures to be in a gang or to lie in court to protect their own. It's a very intense book. Their teacher, Erin Gruwell, set herself the goal to teach them about tolerance and stop the cycle of violence in their lives. Amazingly, she was suceesful. This book follows the kids through their high school years, and the changes that take place in their thinking in that time. This is a great book, I couldn't put it down.
Freedom Writers.......2007-05-13
Well written, deep and touching true accounts of the students past. A truly inspiring story
Courtesy of Teens Read Too.......2007-05-05
This is the book that the movie Freedom Writers (Widescreen Edition) is based on. These are the diaries of the students put into one book.
There are no names used in the book--each diary entry has a number, so that the students could feel free to write what they wanted without knowing exactly who wrote what. Personally, I think this is a great idea because the diary entries were very open and you could tell the students wrote exactly what they felt.
THE FREEDOM WRITERS DIARY is a truly excellent book, because everything is so real and most of The Freedom Writers had to grow up at an extremely early age. Many had their innocence taken away around the age of ten. The Rodney King riots were going on and the Columbine High School event occurred during the time of the book. These high school students had seen more murder and dead bodies then most people will ever see in their entire lives.
99% of The Freedom Writers have even been shot at. This is an extremely true and eye-opening statistic. Segregation is still an issue in the United States, even though many people don't have to deal with it. This book taught me a lot about tolerance and what happens on the streets of Long Beach, California.

Previous editions of this book have helped over 100,000 students and professionals write effective proposals for dissertations and grants. Covering all aspects of the proposal process, from the most basic questions about form and style to the task of seeking funding,
Proposals That Work offers clear advice backed up with excellent examples. In the new edition, the authors have integrated a discussion of the effects of new technologies and the Internet on the proposal process with URLs listed where appropriate. In addition, there is a new chapter on funding for student research and a completely written chapter on qualitative research. As always, the authors have included a number of specimen proposals, two that are completely new to this edition, to help shed light on the important issues surrounding the writing of proposals.
Clear, straightforward, and reader-friendly,
Proposals That Work is a must-own for anyone considering writing a proposal for a thesis, a dissertation, or a grant.

The Only Proposal Guide You Need.......2002-12-30
As any graduate student will tell you acceptance onto a Ph.D program is largely based on submitting a successful proposal. Thereafter, as long as the researcher adheres to the proposal, graduation is virtually guaranteed. I am a Ph.D student who used the book to construct my proposal, which was summarily accepted by the research committee with minor changes. This appears to be contrary to what many Ph.D hopefuls experience. The book is expensive however I would highly recommend it. The proposal hurdle is well worth overcoming professionally.

A practical, inspirational book offering essays, lesson plans, and a remarkable collection of student writing, all rooted in an unwavering focus on language arts teaching for justice. An excellent resource for colleagues, staff development, teacher education, and school libraries.

A must for both experienced and aspiring teachers.......2007-06-30
This was one of three required texts for my masters level Adv. Language Arts class. At first, I thought that the book would follow the pathway of others dealing with education in urban schools--focus on the "Great White Hope". Although the author is Caucasian and the majority of her students are minorities, the book didn't come off as a "Made in Hollywood" story. Christensen is completely honest in her sharing of students' attitudes, experiences, beliefs, and achievemnets as well as her own. She is explicit in her teaching methods, and openly shares what works and what doesn't. It is impossible for me to give Christensen the credit that she deserves in such a limited space. However, I encourage you to discover her on your own. Happy reading.
One of The Best Teaching Books.......2007-01-22
Linda Christensen's book is one of the most useful and rewarding books for teaching Language Arts, period. Reading, Writing, and Rising Up is totally hands on, useful, and will help any teacher figure out better, more effective ways to make learning meaningful for their students. I've used this book many times in my own classes and my students have responded well. No other Language Arts book incorporates issues of social justice so seamlessly. Thank you Linda!
Not what I expected in a text book for education.......2006-10-25
I had expected this text to be a collection of teaching ideas and suggestions for students preparing to teach language arts in school. There are some useful ideas for educational majors. There is also a ton of unuseful, uninsightful and personal ramblings of an apparent devout feminist who obliviously would more comfortable wrting about societies ills with men in charge, instead of useful educational ideas. Writer Christensen should write social commentaries, instead of professing to write useful text, when she can spew extreme left wing ideas. This should have been a book for a sociology class, not an education class.
A Very Good Read.......2006-02-25
I bought this book for a class I'm taking as an education major. This book was an asset to me when planning lessons I'd like to tackle with my students. I'd recommend this book to anyone who is interested in giving students greater ways to to express themselves through their written work!
If you work in a multicultral classroom, a troubled youth classroom or any secondary ed school you need this book........2005-10-07
I bought this book because I thought it seemed interesting. I had no idea how useful it would be.
I work with out of school teenagers who are almost all Latino. This book has given me so many activities to use with my students. They are really starting to understand the power of their voices and how important their stories are. It was really a blessing to finally come across a book that actually addresses the population that I work with.
Book Description
"Surviving Your Dissertation is an ideal book for individuals on initial training courses, providing an overview of the research process, from the literature review through to writing it up. The all-important steps of defining the problem and choosing an appropriate methodology are clearly written, offering a framework which, if followed, would avoid many of the common difficulties experienced by trainees." --School Psychology International "Kjell Erik Rudestam and Rae R. Newton cover the problems and difficulties of successfully completing a doctoral dissertation with honesty and a sense of humor in Surviving Your Dissertation. . . . The authors write from the position of the ideal mentor, presenting the issues doctoral students would like their chairpersons to discuss with them yet rarely have done. . . . Although there are several related handbooks on the market, few combine the complexities of dealing simultaneously with content and process. Surviving Your Dissertation provides a readable, comprehensive guide to maximized success for doctoral students." --The Library Quarterly "Would this book be useful to doctoral students in accounting? My answer is a qualified yes. . . . Students who read and absorb the content of these chapters will be able to construct better proposals and dissertations with less wasted time and effort--both their time and effort and that of their advisors." --The Accounting Review "I was somewhat skeptical when I first heard the topic of this book. Is there really that much to say about dissertations that can apply to a wide variety of fields? My skepticism vanished when I saw this book. I was tremendously impressed. The author was very clever in considering all of the issues that might pop up in performing a dissertation. Also, the writing is excellent, and the organization is generally first-rate." --Robert L. Greene, Department of Psychology, Case Western Reserve University "The authors include material that most other books ordinarily miss, such as learning how to write, discovering one''s learning style, criteria for choosing statistical consultants, and tips for using computers. . . . This book is a must for graduate students for whom thoughts of planning and completing a doctoral dissertation are accompanied by feelings of anxiety, self-doubt, and dread. This book is also a must for doctoral advisors who have long wished for a compendium of down-to-earth wisdom about the dissertation process that could help students get the most out of their doctoral experience." --Craig L. Frisby, Department of Psychology, University of Florida "A useful update. It includes contemporary developments regarding computer technology and some aspects of preparing/writing qualitative reports. I like the extent to which the authors organized chapters in their book corresponding to the chapter/section headings found in the conventional dissertations." --Bruce A. Thyer, School of Social Work, The University of Georgia "This is a useful book for a new graduate student who needs to start thinking about doing a thesis or dissertation at the earliest possible time. I would recommend it this way as a personal purchase. I would also think it might be useful as a supplement to a methods course. I would describe the book as a systematic treatment of the process of doing a thesis or dissertation." --Alan C. Acock, Human Development and Family Services, Oregon State University "An extremely useful guide in assisting me to mentor my graduate students. . . . A wonderful resource for any student beginning a serious research project." --Judy Stevens-Long, Department of Liberal Studies, University of Washington "This is a very readable, well-organized, and comprehensive guide to the dissertation process in the behavioral and social sciences. I will recommend it to all of my graduate students as essential reading both in the beginning and throughout the process of completing the dissertation. Unique for this type of guide is the integration of qualitative and quantitative approaches as well as the chapters on writing and computer software. The guide is especially good in discussing the logic of the dissertation argument and the presentation of quantitative results." --John Landsverk, School of Social Work, San Diego State University "Successful completion of a thesis or dissertation is a unique challenge which need not be as painful if one reads and implements Surviving Your Dissertation prior to undertaking the effort. The book contains a great deal of wisdom about a broad array of issues that can be potential pitfalls. "Surviving Your Dissertation is what it claims to be, i.e., a survival kit for those contemplating doing a dissertation or thesis. Utilization of the ideas and methods incorporated in it will save one many hours of frustration and non-productive effort. It is an invaluable tool to be incorporated in classes on research and research methodologies." --Joseph E. Havranek, Ed.D., CRC, Bowling Green State University "This book provides a lot of useful and necessary information for all marketing doctoral candidates. It can be equally valuable to young faculty members who are just becoming involved in doctoral programs and need to provide structure so they can project successfully from their own experiences. I am certainly recommending the book to my colleagues and graduate students. . . ." --Journal of Marketing Research The dissertation can often seem like an overwhelming and insurmountable obstacle to obtaining that advanced degree--unless you have a handy, comprehensive guide to help you survive the process. Surviving Your Dissertation offers students the perfect guide for preparing the best dissertation. Using examples from a wide range of disciplines, Kjell Erik Rudestam and Rae R. Newton provide readers with expert advice on the entire dissertation process: selecting a suitable topic, conducting a review of the literature, building an argument, presenting the material, presenting data and results and managing data overload, methods for developing appropriate writing skills, ways to construct tables and figures, working with faculty committees, and dealing with emotional blocks. Whether you are a student attempting to write a successful thesis or dissertation, or a professor attempting to guide your students in the right direction, Surviving Your Dissertation is your personal handbook for making the whole process a rewarding experience.

I wish I had this book when I was doing my final core class preparing my prospectus. I had it on my 'wish list'. It would have made things much easier if I had obtained it earlier. I read it one sitting. Written in layman's terms. The best book out of several that I have bought to prepare for my dissertation. Highly recommend this as the one to obtain! You will find it valuable.

Book Description
In a sequel to her international bestseller The White Masai, Corinne Hofmann continues her personal account of a white European woman in love with a Masai tribesman in remote Kenya. Fourteen years after fleeing with her baby daughter, Corinne returned to Kenya in the summer of 2004 to reunite with Lketinga and his family in their village, Barsaloi. Nervous and uncertain as to how he would react on seeing her again, she found to her relief that she was welcomed unreservedly by all who remembered her—Lktinga, who still thought of her as his number one wife; his brother James, now a schoolteacher; and especially Lketinga's mother, who had looked after Corinne with such care all those years before.

If you loved the first one, you'll love this one too........2007-09-02
Just a short review, my title really says it all. Simple writing style again, but the story is an adventure so the writing doesn't need to be. Ms. Hofmann travels back to her village in Kenya where she married and lived with a Masai warrior for years, and bore him a child. Fourteen years later, they accept her back. Her husband seems to have changed for the better (not as immature and petulant as in the first book). The rest of the village is over joyed to have her back for a short visit. She also takes a couple of days to visit the film set of the White Masai movie being filmed (which I would love to see but it's in German). Careful when ordering this book... the ISBN number is the same as another Swiss book and I ordered the wrong one by accident (it had the same title and same ISBN, but different author) So be careful and make sure it's Ms. Hofmann who wrote it! My only criticism, I would love to see pictures of the teenage Napirai (her daughter with Ltekinga) but I can understand her protecting her identity. Also, I'd love to know how to pronounce Ltekinga too! Over all I couldn't wait for this book to be printed in English and it was satisfying to be able to get some closure and updates on the African family members and what has happened to her and her daughter also, since the author returned to Switzerland.

Ordered this book a few weeks ago. Never received it. Had to go purchase a new copy at much greater expense.

The late Bruce Chatwin carved out a literary career as unique as any writer's in this century: his books included In Patagonia, a fabulist travel narrative, The Viceroy of Ouidah, a mock-historical tale of a Brazilian slave-trader in 19th century Africa, and The Songlines, his beautiful, elegiac, comic account of following the invisible pathways traced by the Australian aborigines. Chatwin was nothing if not erudite, and the vast, eclectic body of literature that underlies this tale of trekking across the outback gives it a resonance found in few other recent travel books. A poignancy, as well, since Chatwin's untimely death made The Songlines one of his last books.

Annoying interjections.......2007-05-22
The first sentence sounded promising:"In Alice Springs - a grid of scorching streets where men in long white socks were forever getting in and out of Land Cruisers - I met a Russian who was mapping the sacred sites of the Aboriginals." And indeed what follows in the next thirty or so chapters is a very readable and insightful travelogue of a British (author? archaelogist? historian?) "going bush" with Arkady Volchok, trying to learn about the mythical Aboriginal songlines. Not understandably, then, the author throws in bits and pieces of the protagonist's notebooks, which all more or less anthropological citations and thoughts from very different sources. The concept reminded me a bit of the motif in "The English Patient", where Almasy carries a copy of Herodotus' The Histories with him, adding his own notes and observations. Fortunately, in Ondaatje's novel, this remains a motif which does not disrupt the plot itself. With "The Songlines", however, I found myself flicking impatiently through the interjection-pages in order to get back to the story.
Bruce Chatwin wrote half a book..........2007-04-17
The Songlines really captured my attention. Human ecology, cultural anthropology, human evolution, cultural imperialism, Songlines, Native Australians ("aborigines"), travels... this is a book with information about a people and a place. I enjoyed the flow and pace of the story, and I hope I learned the reality of Native Australian culture.
However, Bruce Chatwin chose to use this book to publish assorted observations, quotes, and reflections from other travels. For me (me), they affected the flow of his storytelling, my ability to focus on the theme - Australia, not nomads - and the ending. Perhaps this is a style thing, and I don't know if Chatwin applies this style in his other books.
Didn't work for me. I wanted a conclusion to his original story.
Aboriginals in Australia.......2007-03-13
In Alice Springs the narrator called Bruce meets Arkady Volchok, an Australian citizen who is mapping the sacred sites of the Aboriginals. Arkady is fascinated by them, by their grit and tenacity and their ways of dealing with white people. Arkady speaks a couple of their languages and he is often astounded by their intellectual vigour, their memory and their capacity to survive.
It was during his time as a schoolteacher in Walbiri that Arkadi learned of the labyrinth of invisible pathways which meander all over Australia and are known to Europeans as Songlines - a way for Aboriginals to sing out the name of everything that crosses their path during their wanderings: birds, animals, plants, rocks, waterholes and so sing the world in existence.
When a route is suggested for a new Alice to Darwin railway line, Arkady's job is to identify the traditional landowners, to drive them over their old hunting grounds and to get them to reveal which rock or soak or ghost-gum is the work of a Dreamtime hero. Bruce is happy to join Arkady and to spend some time "out bush".
The reader of this novel learns a lot about Australia and the Aboriginals. The plot and the characters however are a bit thin. One finds it hard to sympathise with the Aboriginal figures appearing in the story. What they have to say and the way they express themselves amounts to practically nothing. It seems as though they need the white people to tell their stories and traditions.
Best of the best.......2006-10-02
This is the kind of writing/reflecting many people do while travelling and is not a "how to" type of travel guide. I've recommended this book to several thoughtful people, given it to many thoughtful teens as they begin to self-discover, and re-read the book twice. VERY nice writing, good thoughts, great ideas about humans.
The Songlines.......2005-12-17
As i never wanted to go to Australia, i have to say that after reading this book i have not changed my mind, but it is not a point. It is not a book about traveling in Australia. It is more a book about walking, for example. As i like walking, i have found in this book so many great examples of what the walking is about, it is not just moving from one point on the Earth to another, it is also philosophy. And so on...this book is highly recommended for those who knows what the word "travel" means. In present time many people travel, but just a few ones deserve to be called "traveller". Bruce Chatwin is among them.

Good for Freshman Composition.......2007-03-02
I'm using it with my students this semester and it appears to be a hit. Of course, some students who are loathe to engage in critical thinking will find this book useless, but for those who enjoy thinking, analyzing, and questioning, this book serves as a good segueway into deeper critical analyses. This book features readings on pop culture ranging from relatively easy-to-read articles to selections from academic articles from scholarly journals. As a result, many students are faced with difficult and complex readings, often for the first time. By focusing on critical analysis, with this text in the guise of questioning the function of pop culture, students develop their analytical skills and refrain from being passive. Thus, they're encouraged to be active and engaged with their environment. I much prefer a reader in the composition classroom instead of the boring, "how-to" compositions. For the actual writing, I make my own handouts and assignments (individual, small group, and large group), and conduct in-class writing conferences. If a professor isn't willing to do the extra work needed in order to show and model solid collegiate writing, then this book, perhaps, isn't for him or her. But if a professor likes depth to the composition classroom and likes to encourage critical thinking in the students, then this book may be for him or her.

I had to have this book for an english class. its just a bunch of articles that were selected, yet we didn't use them. I think that there are better ways to do something like this
wide ranging and entertaining.......2001-05-24
it's good to find perceptive analyses of aspects of culture we otherwise take for granted treated with both the humor and curiosity they deserve. the scope of this book will help dispel any jaded stare your eyes might have acquired in seeing life grow increasingly routine. as anthropologists are finding westernization leaving scarcer indigenous pickings, we can be happy cultural studies questioning some of the modes becoming more "common".
