Life is Combat.......2005-10-25
Whether you realize it or not, ever since Satan rebelled against God, every human being has arrived on planet earth - a world at war! Chuck's book shows how the lessons he learned as a more elite soldier - a US Army Ranger (hooah) - are directly applicable to life as a Christian being a more elite soldier in the army of the Lord and participating in the daily spiritual battle. Chuck also shows how God, knows us, loves us, and takes time to meet our needs - the last chapter will get your full and undivided attention and show you just how much God cares.
Good book.......2005-04-08
I'm currently non-denominational and chose to read this book for two reasons: I served in the same Regiment as Mr. Holton (different time period) and I'm currently at a crossroads in my life concerning the idea of organized religion. Simply stated, I'm a lost sheep amongst the herd.
So I figured maybe I could pick up a few jewels from this book. And I feel I did.
But to the interested reader, be aware that this book is heavy on Army speak, to the point that I think it would take the average reader some time to try and understand what he talks about. I thought his stories were humorous, but then again much of what he says I've done before. So just understand that and further understand it's STILL worth reading.
It's an excellent resource for any soldier who's struggling to find the application of God in his life. I came to a realization yesterday that I'm missing something and oddly enough this book appeared in my life the same evening (odd, huh?). Fortuitous as it was, I read it in a day and firmly believe he deals w/ real-life issues concerning combat, leadership, and most important, spirituality, which in turn makes for a very good, down-to-earth read.
Three stars for the subject it covers; casual, combat-disinterested readers may not enjoy (even though combat isn't the issue he's hinting at--it's really revelations LEARNED from it which is the pot of gold).
If you're compelled by anything I've said, check it out.

be happy.......2007-08-08
Love this book. I found all kinds of practical information that would be helpful to me if I ever move to Paris, something that could happen if my dreams come true. Suzy Gershman's book is like reading a letter from an old friend and I devoured each page imagining I was there instead. Reading all the reviews I noticed that readers either hated it or thoroughly enjoyed it. I think the ones who didn't like it were expecting something else and blamed the writer when it didn't live up to their expectations. I didn't like Under the Tuscan Sun because of all the whining, page after page. Suzy doesn't whine, she embraces life. Very readable and fun, too.
Light and Breezy---A Lot of Fun to Read.......2007-01-06
I think this is a delightful book---and one to not take too seriously. It's a great book to read when you are down, ill, or needing a good laugh. I enjoyed Gershman's style of writing and while her experiences would be out of reach for most of us, they were fun to read about.
One reviewer called her vulgar---I just don't see that. While it is true that her affair with a married Frenchmen is not what most would do, it was so typically French. Just don't read this book if you feel a need to judge everyone else based on your own morals. This is a BOOK, not a guide to life.
Don't waste your time or money........2006-04-20
I feel like I have to warn readers, please don't waste time, money or energy on this terrible book. I did plod through it and I did notice her disclaimer at the very end of the book that "she left out the depressing parts" but Gersham is so cold and heartless about the death of her husband, that it is hard to get by that and like her. She does go on about herself and shopping and when she tells her readers about a private medical issue, you have to think "way too much information". I pray there is not a sequel!
WOW-ON THE BEST SELLERS LIST!!!!!! .......2005-09-29
I just adore this book and it gives everyone who reads it (I give it as gifts to my male/female friends)an insight into a whole new Paris which most never even get a chance to visit. How wonderful (even after 30 years of visiting)that Suzy still feels the magic of Paris. The one city on this earth which demands attention.
How wonderful that a woman who has educated so many people of the latest trends is now living her dream. Not even the guilt of her friends, her son, her neighbors-you name it- can stop her now.
I eagerly await your new adventures Suzy! You Go Girl!!!
Utter bilge water - the vain and vulgar Suzy Gershman.......2005-09-26
This book isn't about Paris - it's about the the vain and vulgar Suzy Gershman who uses her husband's life insurance money to move to Paris to look for a rich husband: page 111 ("the man was dead, for heaven's sake, dead"); p. 99 ("my best ... hunting ground ... was in lobbies of luxury hotels"); p. 227 (when reminded of her husband's death, she "burst into giggles"); p. 87 ("I have long thought that my birthday should be a national holiday"). She enjoys adultery (p. 142, "I thought adultery was a French treat I should try just like Krug"); and can't understand why her son is upset when she sells the family home:(p. 210, "I thought I was entitled to a life"). She finds a good hairdresser (p. 68, the creme rinse is free); buys a "pair of tight white jeans" (p. 117); discusses her sex toys (p. 125, 142); is proud to travel with 17 suitcases (p. 213); and thinks she may have genital warts (p. 227 - this is certainly a great deal more than anyone wanted to know, but then again this woman has no sense of dignity at all). She drops Walter and Patricia Wells' name at every opportunity, but they are probably profoundly embarrassed by her. I paid about $3 to buy this book used, because I needed mind candy to read on a plane, but it wasn't worth that much. Truly one of the worst books I have ever read. Read Diane Johnson's "Into A Paris Quartier" instead.
Book Description
This book is a discussion of 75 of the most popular films in America from 1921 through 1999 and the changes that have taken place in how masculinity is portrayed in the movies over that period of time. Traditionally in popular films, men have met challenging tasks, but what they accomplish and how successful they are have been drastically changed since the early 1920s. Prior to World War II, men were most often presented within the context of a family. After the war, men were presented as concerned with issues beyond their immediate families, and after 1970, they were portrayed as being overwhelmed by their situations. Recently, popular films have tended to focus on the relationships between them. This work documents these changes over eight decades, using the movies as vehicles to illustrate the major transformations.
Book Description
If the story of the blues is the story of a people, then the voice behind the story belongs to the guitar. The American Blues Guitar: An Illustrated History looks at the instruments and the players, from the birth of the blues to the present day. A brief history of the blues is included. From Blind Lemon Jefferson's Martin to T-Bone Walker's Gibson archtop, and from B.B. King's ES 335 to cousin Albert's Flying-V, all the classic makes and models are documented here in detail, with superb photography, serial number data, and everything the diehard collector - and interested fan - needs to identify these great American heirlooms. You'll find Leo Fender's original patent, filed in April 1951, of the Telecaster guitar, and an analysis of what makes it one of the great instruments. Among the blues artists discussed is Texan Albert Collins and his Gibson humbucker. Expert commentary explains why the players chose the models they did, how their choice influenced their sound, and how those sounds can be recreated today. The American Blues Guitar: An Illustrated History is indispensable to the lover of the blues.
Customer Reviews:
How the guitar has changed and evolved.......2003-11-14
In The American Blues Guitar: An Illustrated History, musician, journalist, and guitar specialist Rick Batey combines eye-catching color illustrations with an upbeat, involving narration on how the Blues have evolved as an American musical evocation through its unique expression on the guitar. However, the greater part of this informative historical guide is devoted to specific information concerning individual models and types of guitars themselves, as well as some of the more famous singers who played them. The American Blues Guitars is a recommended addition to personal and academic American Music History reference collections and reading lists as being a superbly organized, presented, and involving analytical survey of how the guitar has changed and evolved.

Excellent book on designing a channel program.......2004-02-26
It's an easy, quick read and sticks to all the pertinent information without adding unnecessary complexities. The author speaks from experience of the ins and outs of designing and managing the channel. He is able to cover strategy, tactics and theory as well as get down to the nitty gritty personal relationships and politics of being a "channel master".
If you are designing a channel program, this books is an excellent place to start.
All you need to know about distribution channels !.......2003-11-18
This book is a rare example on how it is easy to teach the concepts, show practical examples, and summarize everything in 250 pages without relying on unnecessary phrases and words that just repeat the same idea again and again and increase the size of the book to 1000 pages. The author provides detailed explanations on the structure and functioning of distribution channels and depicts a way to effectively build a succesful channel from scratch. He goes beyond the basic concepts to show additional and important information on antitrust laws and international distribution and competition.
I would recommend reading this book and keeping it as one of your reference books to consult whenever you're up to consider changes in the distribution system that arise because of competitive pressures, changes in customer behavior, or new product launches.
Perfect for the begining marketer!.......2000-12-13
This book is perfect for the person who does not even know where to start. It takes you through each stage of distribution, and how to evaluate what is best for your situation. An excellent buy when you need REAL answers.
Everything You Need to Know and More.......2000-01-13
Brilliant! I've been involved with industrial distribution for well over twenty years. Rolnicki has proven there is still much to be learned, considered and applied. Must reading for anyone that has anything to do with any channel of distribution.
Excellent book.......1999-09-25
A very sound, practical guide to channel management. It's one of maybe a half dozen books on the subject that should be part of the "core curriculum". -Larry Friedman author, "The Channel Advantage"

Description:
We present a two-echelon dual-channel inventory model in which stocks are kept in both a manufacturer warehouse (upper echelon) and a retail store (lower echelon), and the product is available in two supply channels: a traditional retail store and an Internet-enabled direct channel. The system receives stochastic demand from two customer segments: those who prefer the traditional retail store and those who prefer the Internet-based direct channel. The demand of retail customers is met with the on-hand inventory from the bottom echelon while the demand in the Internet-enabled channel is fulfilled through direct delivery with the on-hand inventory from the upper echelon. When a stockout occurs in either channel, customers will search and shift to the other channel with a known probability. A one-for-one inventory control policy is applied. In order to develop operational measures of supply chain flexibility, we define a cost structure which captures two different operational cost factors: inventory holding costs and lost sales costs. We discuss several insights that are evident from the parametric analysis of the model. We also examine the performance of two other possible channel distribution strategies: retail-only and direct-only strategies. Computational outcomes indicate that the dual-channel strategy outperforms the other two channel strategies in most cases, and the cost reductions realized by the flexibility of the dual-channel system may be significant under some circumstances.

Goddess of Rock.......2007-10-03
The title is "The TRUTH is... My Life in LOVE and Music". A lot of the reviewers seem to think that Melissa has been too honest about her relationships, or is too focused on herself, or was unfair to Julie Cypher by detailing the road to the breakup in this book instead of just writing about her music. This is Melissa's AUTObiography, and as such is the truth of her life as she sees it, not anybody else's version. For most artists their emotional life is a huge part of their creativity! For an artist this powerful, that harsh personal life IS the most important part of the songwriting, and why the songs have so much impact and resonance. The life experience and love leads to the music. I read this book a few years back, and was also appalled that Melissa could put up with so much apparent acting out from Julie, while also understanding that it takes two to make a union. Having personally dealt with the kind of crazy-making emotional game playing that it seems was going on, I will especially applaud Melissa's courage for being honest about her own part in enabling the behavior (through not understanding it, through giving up her own power, for rationalizing, for covering up and making excuses, and for desperately holding on to someone who wanted and needed to leave), and thus how destructive it was for both of them.
This book helped open my eyes to how common this is. Abused kids turn into adults looking to heal the abuse by partnering with people who feel "like home", but who basically just further the abuse so familiar from childhood ("you looked like Father, you felt like Mother, my mind told my heart there is no other. And I gave you my soul and every ounce of control.."). Get two people with abusive childhood backgrounds together, and many people of all sexual orientations never make it out of that pattern, looking for healing and redemption in another person, when healing from abuse is an INSIDE job! They understand that something is wrong, but keep trying to placate and please the other person to "fix" the relationship that is mirroring their past, instead of realizing that one CAN'T fix anyone else, only oneself. Julie did Melissa a huge favor: she gave her the feelings that made the songs. ("I turned your dreams into lightning, ain't that enough? I held the world back for you, ain't that enough? I loved you past the point of dying, ain't that enough of me for you?!") Giving and giving and giving to the point of exhaustion only destroys the giver. ("My lover needs to seize, bring me to my knees"). It doesn't make a relationship work any better, but it gave Melissa the personal impetus to make incredible music that, in attempting to heal herself, can also help to heal others.
By being so honest, Melissa gives readers the gift of examples of dysfunctional family abuse with which they may be able to identify, and the resultant unhealthy relationships that can't work without understanding how our past affects our present. She finally figured a lot of this out. If she can do it, so can others in similar circumstances who might never have understood how dysfunctional their own relationships are. Gay or straight, it still hurts when a relationship isn't working despite one's best efforts. "Truth Of The Heart" among other, newer songs, is an example of the spiritual growth she achieved as a result of the pain. I think the book truly is a gift to any reader, fan or otherwise, who can empathize and identify with Melissa's life and see parallels in their own, and maybe get some big AhHa s and clues to eventually healing their own pain and becoming emotionally healthy and wise. As for the voice and editing, it was collaboratively written, and needed to be accessible in tone. If I want great literature, I go elsewhere. For healing though, it's the honest story that helps the most.
Life and strugle.......2007-09-16
melissa life's is full of strugle ,truth and love. Please try to read the book. Is well written and full of love.
Very touching and emotion.......2007-06-06
I guess I can now say that I understand why her music is so fantastic. It's raw and you can feel her emotions pouring out in each and every one. This book covers most of the basics of her life and of course details. You find out about all the heart breaking, losses, and happy moments of her life and how she came to be the person she is today.
If your a fan of her music, you have to pick up this book to fully understand why her music touches your soul.
M.E.I.N........2007-06-02
This is a great book! It is an easy to read inspirational book that takes you on a tour of her life through her family, passions, traumas, setbacks and accomplishments. Sometimes it is comforting to know that we are not alone in this journey and reading about "celebrities" that had rough times too, triumphed in the end.
If you love Melissa ...........2006-08-08
This book was fabulous - it's hard to put it down !! If you love Melissa, you have to read this book right away ... you really get a whole new perspective of what her music is all about. Since the book ended, Melissa could write (and SHOULD) write another on her new relationship, new babies and her cancer story.

Good history of WWI.......2007-07-24
Though a bit rambling at times, an excellent view of a particular WWI battalion as seen from the trenches.
The rambling involves a backstory of the Battalion's soccer ties, which is important to understand for historical purposes. But since I like soccer, too, that was a plus.
Brings home all the horror of this war and the tragedy of fighting units made up from one locale--especially when they're nearly wiped out.
Book Description
In The Origins of American Constitutionalism, Donald S. Lutz challenges the prevailing notion that the United States Constitution was either essentially inherited from the British or simply invented by the Federalists in the summer of 1787. His political theory of constitutionalism acknowledges the contributions of the British and the Federalists. Lutz also asserts, however, that the U.S. Constitution derives in form and content from a tradition of American colonial charters and documents of political foundation that began a century and a half prior to 1787. Lutz builds his argument around a close textual analysis of such documents as the Mayflower Compact, the Fundamental Orders of Connecticut, the Rhode Island Charter of 1663, the first state constitutions, the Declaration of Independence, and the Articles of Confederation. He shows that American constitutionalism developed to a considerable degree from radical Protestant interpretations of the Judeo-Christian tradition that were first secularized into political compacts and then incorporated into constitutions and bills of rights. Over time, appropriations that enriched this tradition included aspects of English common law and English Whig theory. Lutz also looks at the influence of Montesquieu, Locke, Blackstone, and Hume. In addition, he details the importance of Americans' experiences and history to the political theory that produced the Constitution. By placing the Constitution within this broader constitutional system, Lutz demonstrates that the document is the culmination of a long process and must be understood within this context. His argument also offers a fresh view of current controversies over the Framers' intentions, the place of religion in American politics, and citizens' continuing role in the development of the constitutional tradition.
Book Description
James Stoner's purpose is an ambitious one: to recover the common law basis of American constitutionalism.
American constitutionalism in general, he argues, and judicial review in particular, cannot be fully understood without acknowledging their roots in both common law and liberal political theory. But for the most part, the common law underpinnings of constitutionalism have received short shrift.
Through close study of liberal political philosopher Thomas Hobbes and the writings of Edward Coke, a seventeenth-century judge and parliamentarian whose opinion in Doctor Bonham's Case (1610) was once viewed as a precedent for the modern practice of judicial review, Stoner establishes a dialogue between two schools of thought. The contrast that emerges between liberalism, with its scientific ambitions, and common law opens up a fresh perspective on the foundations of the American regime.
Common law is grounded in precedent and local tradition as well as reason; it stresses community. Liberal political theory is based on abstract, rational principles; it stresses individualism. To overlook the common law roots of American constitutionalism, then, is to ignore a tradition that is more contextual and historical, more flexible yet more respectful of the wisdom of tradition or experience, less individualistic and more emphatic about responsibility than is the liberal philosophic tradition.
In Common Law and Liberal Theory, Stoner reexamines the sources of judicial review and the American founding. He focuses on Hobbes and Coke as representative of the two traditions, but also includes chapters on Locke, Montesquieu, Blackstone, and the Federalists. His careful reading of the influences of and conflicts between liberalism and common law will cast new light on the controversy over the origins of American constitutionalism.

Book Description
In the manner of Thoreau, naturalist David Pitt-Brooke meditates on one of Earth’s last untouched places — Vancouver Island’s fabled Clayoquot Sound. This area came to prominence during “Clayoquot Summer,” a 1993 protest that resulted in 800 arrests but also halted the region's destruction by logging. Clayoquot Sound encompasses every imaginable landscape, from alpine tundra to old-growth temperate rain forest. Like Barry Lopez did with the north in Arctic Dreams, Pitt-Brooke approaches this wild, magical place by taking readers on an unforgettable journey for each month of the year. Chasing Clayoquot is a profound — and political — trip through an extraordinary environment.
Customer Reviews:
a beautiful and fascinating book.......2005-05-12
This book is a 12-month exploration of the area around Clayoquot Sound, on Vancouver Island's west coast. Through ventures to various spots in the area, the author tells us of history, geography, wildlife, and more. He talks about the isolated life of the Lennard Island lighthouse keeper, how the coastline was shaped by glaciers, why Pacific waves are so big, how various fur traders and explorers came and went through the years, life in the town of Tofino, and how ongoing logging has created vast swaths of naked hillsides. This book has something for everybody. Part natural history, part human history, part modern day life on the coast, this is a fascinating read and a beautiful description of a lovely and scenic place. I especially recommend reading this if you plan on visiting the area.

A modern wilderness journey.......2004-06-20
This book is an initiation into one of the most beautiful and mysterious places on the planet. For every month of the year the author takes a journey into the forest and ocean wildernesses of Clayoquot Sound, exploring the main events of the yearly natural cycle---storms in January, herring spawning in March, salmon spawning in October, etc.---as well as the relationships between people and nature in Clayoquot Sound, both past and present. The natural history dominates, though, and the human history, though long and resulting in some deep and lasting environmental impacts, seems fleeting and insignificant when viewed against the backdrop of glacier-formed mountains and ancient forests.
I was impressed by how seamlessly the author combined scientific information with personal observations and the narrative of his travels. I felt the relentlessness of the winter rains, the hallowed beauty of wild creeks flowing through old growth, the salty sea air, and even the mosquito bites. The writing is graceful, rich, entertaining---every bit as varied and interesting as the place it describes. I can see this book standing up to multiple readings, with new nuances being discovered each time. ?Chasing Clayoquot? ought to be required reading for anyone planning a trip to Clayoquot Sound, and it makes for good armchair adventuring too. Don?t forget to pack your rain gear!
