Although a new writer, Jane Kryski seems to understand what it means to write an engaging story. I was skeptical based on the cover and subject matter, but Kryski keeps the story moving and the contrast between her post stroke and previous life can only be described as tragic. I was left with a feeling of a person who has come to terms with her handicap and ultimately - her talent. Do yourself a favor and check out this one out.

4 out of 5 stars Cogent Advice for Novice Investors.......2004-01-27

Each year, it seems reams of page are published on the subject of investing. Many are forgettable and some should absolutely be avoided. But a friend told me to check this book out and I was pleasantly surprised. Lynnette Khalfani is a former reporter for "The Wall Street Journal" and CNBC. To her credit, she keeps the chapters short and to the point and ends each with what she refers to as a "$ummary $uccess $tory." The book is clear, concise, and east to read and follow.

Khalfani essentially notes that mistakes made by people in investing are fairly common to the majority of investors. She divides the book into five sections: strategizing your goals, buying, holding, selling, and dealing with investment intermediaries such as stock brokers. She has an easy-to-read, friendly style of writing. The advice is basic, and more sophisticated investors will consider as remedial or average, at best, but for anyone who knows little about investing, it's a great starting point.

Her advice is solid throughout, and the piece of advice she considers most important is particularly good: Don't invest prematurely. By that she means you should have a stash of three-to-six months of expenses, a will, and disability insurance before you dive into investing. If you are new to investing, read this book first, you'll be glad you did.

5 out of 5 stars A vital and fiscally savvy resource.......2004-01-14

Knowledgeably written for the non-specialist general reader by a veteran financial news journalist Lynnette Khalfani, Investing Success: How To Conquer 30 Costly Mistakes & Multiply Your Wealth! is a very practical guide to avoiding common mistakes in financial matters, ranging from investing prematurely; to relying too much on "inside" information; to lack of true diversification; to fiscal overconfidence; to failing to acknowledge mistakes; to neglecting to check the background of one's broker or financial planner, and more. Investing Success is commended as being a vital and fiscally savvy resource for learning from the mishaps of others before one's hard-earned life savings are on the line.

        5 out of 5 stars A Great Resource.......2003-12-25

Investing Success inspired me to kick start 2004...and to develop a strategy for investing. The book is sophisticated enough to be helpful, concise and well written. The examples Summery Success Strategies at the end of each chapter help me stay focused and on track. Finally, a book that tells you what to do and how to clean up the mess if you've made mistakes.

5 out of 5 stars Basic, yes, but invaluable for many people.......2003-12-11

There are so many books which offer advice on investments and this is one of the best. At the outset, I presume to share some lessons I have learned over the years which seem relevant to Khalfani's suggestions as to how to "conquer 30 costly mistakes and multiply your wealth." First, the importance of systematic savings. Next, the importance of compounded interest on what we save. Finally, the importance of having a realistic plan for increasing one's net worth through systematic savings and the compound interest accumulated by it. Unless and until an individual investor fully appreciates the importance of the first two and then commits to the third, costly mistakes will be made with inevitable (but avoidable) results.

Khalfani organizes her material within five Parts: Strategic Slip-Ups, Buying Blunders, Holding/Monitoring Mishaps, Selling Snafus, and Financial Advisor Foul-Ups. Although each seems to focus on mistakes of judgment, she explains how to avoid the don'ts by doing their opposite. Whereas unsuccessful investors focus on products, successful investors focus on the process of investing. For example, they

        * Set specific, measurable, and realistic investment goals (Chapter 1)

        * Do not have concentrated wealth (Chapter 9)

        * Monitor your investment frequently and rigorously (Chapter 13)

        * Have a sell strategy (Chapter 17)

        * Take full advantage of all available independent research (Chapter 25)

My guess (only a guess) is that this book will not be of substantial value to sophisticated investors. They and their financial advisors probably know which "costly mistakes" to avoid and how to avoid them. For so many others, however, I think that Khalfani's book will provide the guidance they need to achieve greater success with their investments than would otherwise be possible. As she explains, the investment process involves five distinct phases: strategizing to identify and then meet personal goals, buying the right (i.e. most appropriate) investments, holding and carefully monitoring those investments, selling investments in a judicious and prudent manner, and dealing effectively with intermediaries such as stockbrokers and financial planners. Basic stuff? Yes, of course, but so many private investors are either unaware of this process or (for whatever reasons) lose patience with it.

It remains for each of us to determine what "wealth" means. More to the point, it is our responsibility, indeed our obligation to protect and preserve whatever resources we may have, investing them wherever and whenever most appropriate. If you are among those in need of expert guidance when making such investment decisions, Khalfani's book can be of substantial assistance. However, as she correctly insists, you must first understand the process...and then invest as much of your time and energy may be required before you make investment decisions.

        Book Description

All for the Union is the eloquent and moving diary of Elisha Hunt Rhodes, who enlisted into the Union Army as a private in 1861 and left it four years later as a 23-year-old lieutenant colonel after fighting hard and honorably in battles from Bull Run to Appomattox. Anyone who heard these diaries excerpted on the PBS-TV series The Civil War will recognize his accounts of those campaigns, which remain outstanding for their clarity and detail. Most of all, Rhodes's words reveal the motivation of a common Yankee foot soldier, an otherwise ordinary young man who endured the rigors of combat and exhausting marches, short rations, fear, and homesickness for a salary of $13 a month and the satisfaction of giving "all for the union."

        5 out of 5 stars Only A Boy.......2007-03-01

If you are interested in more than big names and big battles this book is well worth reading. Elisha Hunt Rhodes shares his experiences from his enlistment as a boy having never been away from home until his mustering out as a man having earned the rank of Col. He writes in an honest straight forward manner about every aspect of daily life. His strong belief in duty, sense of right and wrong and his ever important sense of humor show in everything he writes. He's an optimist that made it through the war with all these attributes intact. Thankfully for us he kept this diary so that we can understand a little more about life during the Civil War.

5 out of 5 stars Following the footsteps.......2004-11-25

It isn't easy to find quality diaries written so well from the Civil War sometimes; although this book will rank with in the top 10. Popularized and quoted often in Ken Burn's Civil War series on PBS, Rhodes' book about his life as a soldier come to life. Rhodes brings the excitement and patriotic fervor of being a new recruit in the 2nd Rhode Island Infantry early in the war. This patriotic spirit never dies through out his writing. Many times he writes about the daily hardships such as bad weather, sickness and death while always falling back on the duty to ones country and the saving of the union. Rhodes' duty carries him many engagements where death lingers around every corner. Battles such as Bull Run, Antietam, Fredericksburg and Gettysburg are just a few that this man witnessed and wrote about firsthand. Rhodes' was really an ideal soldier and loved the life. He started the war as a private and by the end of it was a colonel. Many people would benefit from reading this book be it a historian or beginner looking to further understand soldier life in the Civil War.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent diary of a Civil War Soldier.......2004-07-01

This is a very well written diary of a Civil War Soldier that enlisted as a private and ended the war as a Col. He does not go into great detail about battles but, he does go into detail about the daily life of a soldier. E.H. Rhodes writes a very easy to follow text. I highly recommend this book!!!!

5 out of 5 stars One of the best.......2004-06-09

I have an extensive Civil War Library, and, once in a while, read a book that stands out alone. I postponed things I needed to do in order to finish this as close to one setting as possible.
Elisha Hunt Rhodes was a 'soldier's soldier, and a patriot's patriot. His diary will take you through the hum drum of camp life and the heat of battle. It takes you through the good times as well as the bad times. Your emotions will swing with his. Through all, Rhodes was "All for the Union."
As I finished this book, I realized this must be the best eye witness account ever written.

        5 out of 5 stars A Civil War Classic.......2004-04-11

I purchased this book more than a decade ago after Ken Burns' series on the Civil War "discovered" Elisha Hunt Rhodes. I find the his words so compelling that I re-read this book at least once a year. As a self-professed Civil War buff, it continually amazes me that Elisha survived the carnage of four years of an absolutely brutal conflict with his optimism and values intact. Some angel was definitely looking out for him. Today, as America finds itself embroiled in another war, I take more than a little comfort in Elisha Hunt Rhodes' spirit and resilience.

                            Book Description

The concept of reproductive health promises to play a crucial role in improving women's health and rights around the world. It was internationally endorsed by a United Nations conference in 1994, but remains controversial because of the challenge it presents to conservative agencies: it challenges policies of suppressing public discussion on human sexuality and regulating its private expressions. Reproductive Health and Human Rights is designed to equip healthcare providers and administrators to integrate ethical, legal, and human rights principles in protection and promotion of reproductive health, and to inform lawyers and women's health advocates about aspects of medicine and healthcare systems that affect reproduction. Rebecca Cook, Bernard Dickens, and Mahmoud Fathalla, leading international authorities on reproductive medicine, human rights, medical law, and bioethics, integrate their disciplines to provide an accessible but comprehensive introduction to reproductive and sexual health. They analyse fifteen case-studies of recurrent problems, focusing particularly on resource-poor settings. Approaches to resolution are considered at clinical and health system levels. They also consider kinds of social change that would relieve the underlying conditions of reproductive health dilemmas. Supporting the explanatory chapters and case-studies are extensive resources of epidemiological data, human rights documents, and research materials and websites on reproductive and sexual health. In explaining ethics, law, and human rights to healthcare providers and administrators, and reproductive health to lawyers and women's health advocates, the authors explore and illustrate limitations and dysfunctions of prevailing health systems and their legal regulation, but also propose opportunities for reform. They draw on the values and principles of ethics and human rights recognized in national and international legal systems, to guide healthcare providers and administrators, lawyers, governments, and national and international agencies and legal tribunals. Reproductive Health and Human Rights will be an invaluable resource for all those working to improve services and legal protection for women around the world. 1 out of 5 stars A dishonest, misleading book.......2004-01-21

Other reviewers have noted Alston Chase's biases, though it took my wife the zoologist to point out just how dishonestly he supports them. He claims that nature is subject to drastic change without human intervention and that simple ecosystems are no more unstable than complex ones. He gives as examples (on page 108):

                                  - The elephants in Tsavo National Park, whose population exploded when it was established, so much so that the elephants ate almost all the vegetation. He doesn't mention that vast habitat destruction took place outside the park, as well as uncontrolled poaching.

                                  - Moose and wolf populations on Isle Royale, which do indeed very wildly. But that's as simple an ecosystem as you can get short of ferns in the sunlight: one predator, one prey.

                                  - Peruvian anchovies and Maine menhaden, whose populations crashed in the 1970s and 1960s. He doesn't mention that they were being fished unrestrainedly.

So all his examples show either the effects of human intervention or of a simple ecosystem, proving just the opposite of his claims.

Additionally, he claims that only six bird species have gone extinct in North America and Europe since 1600. My wife can name five that have gone extinct in North America just since 1914. And that's not even counting the passenger pigeon, which was once the most populous bird in the world, now extinct thanks solely to human activity.

After that, it's impossible to believe anything Alston Chase says, which means there's not much point in reading this book.

                                  2 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2002-07-08

While the author does an admirable job of thoroughly outlining one particular version of the history of the ecological/conservancy movement and of the fallacious assumptions in the popular spiritually-overtoned meanings of "ecology" and "ecosystem" within the USA, obvious flaws in this book include the lack: of evidence for his own assertions, of positive elements in the history, of any alternative suggestions to the efforts he critiques, and of any acknowledged culpability for man due to man's science-enhanced unnatural fecundity and destructiveness or man's innate avarice.

1 out of 5 stars Chase This One Away.......2001-11-28

I found this book to be fraught with factual errors, and was most notable for the omissions of inconvenient facts. This book is intended to give us the picture of a gentleman who is a moderate, and a voice of reason against eco-terror, but instead what I found was a thinly disguised argument in favor of clear cutting - but the author cannot even remain consistent with that argument, as most of his examples of sustainable systems are drawn from areas where selective cutting has been practiced. Many of the misrepresentations that are evident here are easy to spot if you are willing to research the vast array of literature available on this subject, but the majority of his audience is not going to be able to take the sort of time to thoroughly research both sides of the question. Don't waste your time.

While I do think there is a bit of a right slant to this work, some of the factual information given did seem to make sense, and was information I was not aware of before.

This book lost me on some section, and others had me riveted. Over all I did enjoy my experience and felt I learned alot.

1 out of 5 stars Correction to previous review.......2000-07-13

My review below had some words excised by some unknown computer demon. Here are the last two paragraphs in their entirety.

These errors, perhaps indicative of a need for greater skill among Houghton Mifflin's editing staff, would be excusable were it not that Chase seems to extend the same careless lackadaisy to allegations more serious than the spelling of a name. He asserts as fact the idea that Earth Firsters called the family of a logger killed on the job to say "he had it coming." What's his source for this allegation? Interviews with two unrelated timber industry advocates. Maybe such a hideously insensitive call happened and maybe it didn't, but Chase couldn't be bothered to corroborate the assertion - by asking the family, for instance - before stating it as bald fact. At another point, Chase castigates environmentalists who sabotage logging equipment as "destroying property of people who make far less money than they do." Oh, really? Did Chase survey those green miscreants and obtain their W-2s for the year? Or is the assertion like so many others in the book: unsupported assertions that bolster his prejudices?

I'm all for criticism of the environmental movement, and I almost always enjoy reading books by people I disagree with. But it's one thing to have an ideological axe to grind: it's another to slam that axe so carelessly to the grindstone that it won't cut fog. The two or three good points Chase makes about modern environmentalism are lost in that fog. Chase should have known better.
