Reality Transformed: Film and Meaning and Technique
ASIN: 0262195011 |
Book Description
Although Alfred Hitchcock, Orson Welles, and Jean Renoir do not pontificate about "eternal verities or analytical niceties," as Irving Singer remarks in Three Philosophical Filmmakers, each expresses, through his work, his particular vision of reality. In this study of these great directors, Singer examines the ways in which meaning and technique interact within their different visions.
Singer's account reveals Hitchcock, Welles, and Renoir to be not only consummate artists and inspired craftsmen but also sophisticated theorists of film and its place in human experience. They left behind numerous essays, articles, and interviews in which they discuss the nature of their own work as well as more extensive issues. Singer draws on their writings, as well as their movies, to show the pervasive importance of what they did as dedicated filmmakers.
Hitchcock used his mastery of contrived devices not as mere formalism divorced from content, Singer notes, but in order to evoke emotional responses that are meaningful in themselves and that matter greatly to millions of people. Singer's discussion of Hitchcock's work analyzes, among other things, his ideas about suspense, romance, and the comic. Singer also makes a detailed comparison of the original Psycho with Gus Van Sant's recent remake. Considering the work of Welles, Singer shows how and why the theme of vanished origins -- "the myth of the past" -- recurs in many of his films, starting with the Rosebud motif in Citizen Kane and continuing much later in his little-known masterpiece The Immortal Story. Expanding upon Renoir's comment that his own films were "always the same film," Singer studies his entire work as a coherent though evolving search for contact and "conversation" with the audience. While recognizing the primacy of technique, Renoir used cinematic artifice in the service of that humanistic aspiration.

Filmbuff's pleasure.......2006-03-05
Do not be worried by the title if you are unphilosophical. The book is a lucid and enjoyable discussion of the different styles and attitudes towards film-making of three fine directors. Worth the attention of filmbuffs.

Book Description
Renoir on Renoir, is a comprehensive collection of essays by, and interviews of, the legendary film-maker Jean Renoir, who created such classics as The Grand Illusion, The River, and The Rules of the Game. Renoir’s career in cinema, which stradled the transition from silent film to the talkies, has influenced a subsequent generation of film-makers. Between 1954 and 1967, Renoir was interviewed by such eminent film-makers and theorists as Jacques Rivette, Francois Truffaut, and Jacques Becker. The interviews were originally recorded and published in the distinguished Frnch film review Cahiers du Cinema, as well as shown on French television. They are an engaging account of Renoir's deep commitment to his chosen profession. Providing additional information on his ideas and theories on screen writing and directing, Renoir’s essays also include lively anecdotes of the genesis and evolution of each of his films. Renoir on Renoir will be appreciated by students and critics of film, as well as anyone who would like to know the behind-the-scenes stories of some of the masterpieces of French cinema.

Book Description
Creed's story is indeed an inspirational one. The group of rockers originating from Tallahassee, Florida, made an indelible impression with their debut album, My Own Prison, released on the independent Wind Up Records label. Creed dominated the rock charts and made history when all four singles from this freshman album captured the number one position. Their success is all the more genuine because it was done without the backing of huge corporate dollars or the hype of a glitzy media campaign. With the release of their sophomore album, Human Clay, the Florida foursome continue to gain respect from critics and fans alike who praise them for their passionate live performances and poignant heartfelt lyrics. Read all the exciting details of a band whose faith and belief in their musical dream pulled them through their bleakest hour and propelled them forward to the peak of the musical charts. An accomplishment Creed achieved their way - without apology.

One for the outhouse.......2001-05-22
If you have access to internet and a library don't waste your money on this book. For those who don't have such, this rates fine for reading in your backwoods outhouse. Singer Scott Stapp puts great emphasis on seeking for truth and though these writings contain a good amount of "What If" situations to generate a sense of living in the moment, SO much is repititious speculation. One point disturbing to me was the fabrication of what Mr. and Mrs. Stapp experienced in the birth of their son Scott. We big fans know that Preacher Stapp is Scott's stepdad. Scott's birth father left when he was a preschooler. (People magazine, March 2001.) Seek and ye shall find, fans. But don't look here.
Blah Blah Woof Woof.......2001-01-17
I LOVE Creed so don't get me wrong here but... this book is horrible, 1) and foremost it isn't endorsed by Creed 2) the book is not written well, and 3) you can't figure out what is true or false. I didn't like the way that Creed was compared with bands such as Pearl Jam and the Doors. The fact of the matter is if you like Creed, watch VH1's Behind the Music: Creed, it's much easier to understand, and you know that Creed agreed with it.
The Answer to the "religion" question and so much more..........2000-12-07
For my favortie band this book was very interesting and informative. Yes, at times the book seemed bald and ther was not much detail, but overall I learned a lot about Creed that I could not find out from VH1 Behind The Music or searching on the internet.
Yes, it would have been better if Creed had endorsed this book because maybe I would have bought it sooner. I wish that Scott Stapp, the cutie lead singer, could have written a chapter in it but sadly he was not able to.
I had no idea of how bad the sickness was, resulting from too much touring and not enough rest, and the fact that Hilaree and Scott are NOT married anymore.
The best band onstage and the best band ever...Creed are REAL rock stars!!!
Ehhh.....I dunno...isn't endorsed by Creed..........2000-11-17
I've read a lot of stuff about this book, and there are a LOT of discrepancies. I have also heard that this is not authorized by Creed or anyone haveing to do with them....so I don't know how authentic the facts are, since no one in Creed has verified them.

This was a suggested reading and workbook tool by my SES, I found the content to be easy to follow and enjoyable to understand and implement
The 360-Degree Leader Workbook.......2007-02-06
This is one of the best and most practical books that I've every read on leadership. It one of only a handful of books on leading up (your boss) and leading across (fellow employees). Most books are on leading down (those who report to the boss), but only a very small portion of any organization is in that position.
Best Leaders Book Out.......2006-12-22
Maxwell hit a home run and I recommend 360 Leader to anyone that wants to grow into a leader that God wants him to be. Both the book and the workbook are valuable.

"This is a story about a year when someone was sick, about a time when it seemed that the rest of the world was sick, too." So begins Harvey Pekar and Joyce Brabner's painful comic book autobiography centering on the year that they found out that Pekar had cancer; the year that also saw Operation Desert Shield turn into Operation Desert Storm. Drawing upon the many personal trials they faced, Pekar and Brabner create a portrait of a man beset with fears both real and imagined.
Book Description
It was they year of Desert Storm that Harvey Pekar and his wife, Joyce Brabner, discovered Harvey had cancer. Pekar, a man who has made a profession of chronicling the Kafkaesque absurdities of an ordinary life (if any life is ordinary) suddenly found himself incapacitated. But he had a better-than-average chance to beat cancer and he took it — kicking, screaming, and complaining all the way. Pekar and Brabner draw on this and other trials to paint a portrait of a man beset with fears real and imagined — who survives.
Customer Reviews:
Didn't feel anything after I finished reading it.......2007-06-03
I know there are some fans out there of Harvey, Joyce, etc. I liked the movies "American Splendor" (big fan of Paul G.) and "Crumb" and took a chance on this book. I started reading it a while ago but stopped. A month ago I found out I had a pituitary adenoma (a.k.a. benign, slow-growing brain tumor). While going through one of the piles of books on my floor this morning I rediscovered this book and spent the day reading it. I'm pretty much left with a "So what?" feeling. One of my best friends from high school had NHL at about the same tme that Harvey did. He's subsequently had several surgeries for brain lesions. Maybe I'm just not the "American Splendor" graphic novel type, but I can't recommend this book to anyone, even if they or a loved one has cancer. I thought the illustrations were pretty good in that they well represented the emotions of the characters.
Our Cancer Year Harvey Pekar and Joyce Brabner.......2007-05-15
If you can't love Harvey Pekar, you can't love anyone. He is a lovely man, with as many neuroses as the rest of us, who listens and watches and reports on the people and world around him. Although this is about a bout with cancer, and how a man and his wife and friends make it through, it's not depressing. You do feel as though you are with them -the graphic novel format makes this story easy to take in and digest. I might not have read it in a regular format, and it's something I'd be sorry to have missed.
I found the Pekar books to be like peanuts - I kept wanting more and more and hate to finish one - unless I have another ready to read. Harvey's 'comics" are the first graphic novels I've spent time reading, and I am hooked. The drawings add immeasurably to the story - a format I would like to see developed further in the future.
An extraordinary work!.......2007-02-16
If you like Pekar or you have seen a cancer fight play out, you will totally get this. And if you want to know what a cancer fight is like, with everything exposed, this is the book to get.
Since one reviewer mentioned R.Crumb, I will point out that Pekar said that Crumb was very impressed with what the artist of this book had done and Crumb said he couldn't have done better. The artist has done incredible work in transmitting the story.
This book is as real as it gets. Get it!
A better look at Joyce.......2005-03-30
Those of us who only knew Joyce from the American Splendor film will be impressed by her depth. Hope Davis as Joyce seemed sarcastic but shallow: sleeping all day, flying out to do some sort of activism, then finally latching on to a friend's little girl to fulfill her maternal instincts. And "Real Joyce" seemed content to smile and stay in the background.
There is little of that Joyce here. Whether you like her politics or not, she is can-do all the way. I was puzzled that Danielle is not in this book. Perhaps she's edited out for simplicity, or perhaps the film's timeline was idealized to bring her in during the cancer year.
I, too, was initially put off by the artwork, especially the asymmetrical and misshapen faces, but I came to feel that the drawing style supported the story well. They needed a little more white-out over the cut-and-paste spots, though.
I especially enjoyed the problems with Slim, having run into the same sense of entitlement with PTL contractors.
Learn to read the art as well.......2003-09-02
It's very important to emphasize here that Frank Stack's artwork is not "sloppy" or "crude" in any sense. He and Bill Griffith probably have the strongest straight-art chops of anybody doing comics now. But Stack isn't just technically accomplished. Once you learn to follow his deceptively simple lines, he's profoundly expressive in his impressionist manner. Especially dealing with the tough stuff in this story, he finds the exact unsentimental tone. If he was a more prolific storyteller (or had just a bit more vivid sense of humor) his work would be mentioned right with Griffith, Crumb, Sheldon, Williams, Woodring -- the likes of those. Barbner and Pekar's single finest stroke may have been choose Stack to do the art for "Our Cancer Year."

MY TRUTH LIES IN THE RUINS
ASIN: 142081317X |
Book Description
In the Shadow of My Truth is the second book in the series on Clan Douglas and Scotland's Wars for National Independence. The year was 1306; Scotland needed a revolution, a new king to lead her subjects to freedom. Robert Brus answered the call. James Douglas joined him. This is the true story of the Good Sir James, one of Scotland's most beloved knights. It is also the tale of a widow's struggle to revenge her husband's martyred end. Eleanora Lovaine Douglas inspired her three sons to greatness, instilling her husband's teachings and core values in her children; fulfilling her death bed promise to her loving husband, continuing the fight for Scotland to rid their homeland of Edward's tyranny forever.
Customer Reviews:
You won't soon forget the Douglas Clan.......2005-03-01
History comes to life and invites you to be entranced. "In the Shadow of My Truth" is the second epic novel by Deborah Richmond Foulkes in a series of three, that explore her family's history but also the great history of "The Good Sir James."
The legacy of William le Hardi, the martyred patriot of the first book, "My Truth Lies in the Ruins," is continued in the story of his sons, one of which is The Good Sir James himself. William's widow, Eleanora Lovaine Douglas, vows to fulfill her promise of continuing the fight for Scotland. She raises her sons to reflect the great values of her husband. The three grow up to be King Robert's greatest soldier and most trusted knight, a crusader knight and alchemist healer, and a dedicated squire in service to his older brother, Sir James. What's more is that they grow up to be an honor to their father and to Scotland.
The book begins in the year 1306 and follows to 1330. What it encompasses is a glimpse into the true history of the Clan Douglas and Scotland's Wars for National Independence. But the book holds so much more than that. Here you will see the majestic lifestyle of medieval castles with all the pomp and flourish, you will feel the points of swords in battle and see the death of soldiers all around, you will witness births, weddings and the crossings into the Otherworld. All in such a vivid manner that you will think you had experienced it yourself.
Deborah Richmond Foulkes spent two years in Scotland doing research and spent much time in the libraries of Harvard University and The National Library of Scotland in Edinburgh. I am quite sure that this is only a slight mention of the research involved, as this is the most authentic presentation of historical novel I have read. While this is so, the book reads so easily, so unlike a history book that you will forget that these are true stories and find yourself immersed in a very interesting tale. The plot runs smoothly while Foulkes' descriptive writing is flawless. You won't soon forget the Douglas Clan and will look forward to the next book in the series, "My Truth...A Mist in Time."
Review by Heather Froeschl.
Book Description
Stirner's The Ego and its Own (1844) is striking in both style and content, attacking Feuerbach, Moses Hess and others to sound the death-knell of Left Hegelianism. The work also constitutes an enduring critique of liberalism and socialism from the perspective of an extreme eccentric individualism. Stirner has latterly been portrayed variously as a precursor of Nietzsche, a forerunner of existentialism, an individualist anarchist, and as manifestly insane. This edition includes an Introduction placing Stirner in his historical context.
Customer Reviews:
Almost but not entirely !!!.......2005-11-29
To make this blunt and clear I have absolutely no problem with Max Stirners' philosophy (EGOISM). However, on one essential point Max Stirner seems to have travelled the road somewhat of nearly all 18th-19th century eurocentric racist. In PART FIRST: MAN, chp 2 Section 3 (THE HIERARCHY) Max Stirner unwittingly claims:
"The history of the world, whose shaping properly belongs altogether to the Caucasian race."
In conjunction with this racist statement by Max Stirner one is obliged to mention that Max Stirner himself wasn't certain about his very own claim concerning the historical development of the Caucasian. Max Stirner says:
"The historical reflections on our Mongolism which I propose to insert episodically at this place are not given with the claim of thoroughness, or even of approved soundness, but solely because it seems to me that they may contribute toward making the rest clear."
The reason I am writing this racial-review of Max Stirners' book is that I may point out to certain readers (African-Americans)that Max Stirner may seem like a racist but with further reading of his book it all becomes clear why Max Stirner presented his racial-analogue. Nevertheless, here is a weblink to a good article for African-Americans to read while also reading Max Stirners' book: [ http://www.nbufront.org/html/MastersMuseums/JGJackson/EthiopiaOriginOfCivilization.html ]
P.S.
I surely wish Max Stirner was alive to read the article up above. Maybe he would have changed his views concerning race.
Ayn Rand could have written this book........2005-08-30
But she didn't. Someone else did, nearly a century before anyone had ever heard of Ayn Rand. Yet somehow Ayn Rand got the credit for "originating" the philosophy in this book.
Perhaps Stirner's mistake was becoming an essayist instead of a novelist.
tossing away spooks.......2004-07-24
this is the most liberating book ever written, it frees the individual from such spooks as family, church, state, society, god. He was correct to note that feuerbach and the marxists were establishing their own religion, and this criticism applies to many of the secular religions of our day. He also destroys such chimeras as the 'social contract' and other nonsensical obligations.
Those rantings makes good eatin'.......2003-05-02
I'll dispense with the summary and just say that the book was interesting as a historical footnote. I certainly find it to be an awe inspiring book in its ability to inspire psuedo-anarchist rantings. Between this and Kropotkin's Conquest of Bread few books seem to have inspired so many middle-aged capitalists to forego their mid-life crisis Corvettes and dive into the selfishness of a fascism covered in the guise of anti-establishment philosophy.
Pesonally, I read it as historical precedent for the attack on systematic philosophies and a precursor to the nebulous nihilism of our day. As a left wing socialist 'kook', I found it to cast an interesting light on the internal war between our current passive, laissez faire nihilism and our more ideological desire to act (that was at least why I read it).
As any 'anti-whatever' book, it is more interesting to read then anyone who painstakingly creates a thoughtful thesis. Hegel may have been a genius but it certainly is less amusing to read then this or Nietzsche- that may be why we have so many undeveloped minds becoming anarchists or whatever, it's easy to read.
Interesting if abrasive food for thought!.......2002-10-03
"What is supposed to be my concern. First and foremost the Good Cause, then God's Cause, the cause of mankind, of truth, of freedom, of humanity, of justice; further, the cause of my people, my prince, my fatherland; finally, even the cause of my mind. Only MY cause is never to be my concern. 'Shame on the egoist who thinks only of himself.'"
In this, the first paragraph of his powerful book, Max Stirner sets the stage. His cause? 'Nothing.' His goal? To stop at nothing. In The Ego and It's Own (more literally translated to The Person and His Property) Stirner tries making the case for anarchism based on individualism, rebelling against the collectivist strand professed by Proudhon and Godwin before him.
When Stirner says he 'base[s his] cause on nothing,' what is meant. Simply, he takes nothing (even our supposed self evident truths like right to life) as givens. Everything is questionalbe; nothing immune. So really, this book is not for the squeamish. First, he takes apart religion for setting a 'transcendental' cause higher than the individual. Then he attacks the concept of the state- and socialism- for doing the same. Then he takes apart concepts of 'rights' becuase without a god to grant them and a state to inforce them, what right do I have to live if you kill me? To clarify, Stirner does believe in cooperation for each party's benefit; just not coerced in ANY way.
While Stirner is said to be a precursor to Nietzsche, there is no evidence that Nietzsche knew of him. In fact, the biggest influence he might've had (in print) is Marx's 300 page(!) critique of Stirner in his German Ideology. I've not read it, but it's clear that Marx has a lot to wrestle with.
Now for the subtracted star. Stirner, while being an egoist, is somewhat of an egotist. He repeats the same things many times and a reader would not miss much if she cut out 150 pages early. Secondly, and it must be said, Stirner is not profound because he is philosophically challenging. He is not; then again neither are most anarchists. He is profound because he has the gumption to say what no one else will. He even questions why it is considered bad to sleep with one's sister. Can we argue? Hmmm.... What are you staring at me for, read the book already!
Book Description
In The Story Handbook, contributors Tim Ahern, William Cronon, John Elder, Peter Forbes, Barry Lopez, and Scott Russell Sanders present us with the power of stories, narratives of people and places, and how those stories can advance the work of land conservation toward creating meaningful change in our culture.
As Trust for Public Land president Will Rogers writes in his introduction, "true success in our work means moving land conservation out of the `emergency room' of last-ditch efforts... To do this we will need to help create a fundamental change in how our society thinks about and treats land; we will need to nurture the flowering of a new land ethic. Stories may be our best way to get there."
Chapters include:
"Giving Way to the Story" by Peter Forbes
"Landscape and Narrative" by Barry Lopez
"Storytelling for the Media" by Tim Ahern
"A Few Earthy Words" by Scott Russell Sanders
