    Book Description

At the center of West of Then is Karen Morgan -- island flower, fifth-generation haole (white) Hawaiian, Mayflower descendant -- now living on the streets of downtown Honolulu. Despite her recklessness, Karen inspires fierce loyalty and love in her three daughters. When she goes missing in the spring of 2002, Tara, the eldest, sets out to find and hopefully save her mother. Her journey is about what you give up when you try to renounce your past, whether personal, familial, or historical, and what you gain when you confront it.

By turns tough and touching, Smith's modern detective story unravels the rich history of the fiftieth state and the realities of contemporary Hawaii -- its sizable homeless population, its drug subculture -- as well as its generous, diverse humanity and astonishing beauty. In this land of so many ghosts, the author's search for her mother becomes a reckoning with herself, her family, and with the meaning of home.

3 out of 5 stars Outside the tourist zone.......2006-12-21

Karen Morgan came from an "old kamaaina family," the kind Maile Yardley used to write about in The Honolulu Advertiser, with teas on the lawn and parties at the beach house. Her daughter Tara Smith introduces her 21st century world on the first page of this memoir as "junkies like my mother."
"West of Then" is out of the tourist zone.
It is not entirely clear why Smith wrote this book. Early on, we are led to believe that her mother disappeared and this is the story of how her daughter came back to Oahu to look for her: "One day my mother is sleeping under cardboard (at a pocket park in downtown Honolulu), the next she's gone. Really, really gone."
But that was 2002, and in the Acknowledgments, we discover that Smith has been researching the book since 1998. Also, we discover, to our surprise, that the disappearance was only temporary, that Morgan is "partying," and "still struggling" in Honolulu in 2004, as the book is published.
It's a bit of a con, like finishing a murder mystery and discovering that the secret was that there was no murder.
Or is this a public exploration of a daughter's double anguish? "I don't know why I think my mother is my responsibility, but I do."
Or a family history with the family's most obvious failure as its pivot?
Only alternate chapters are about her search for Karen. The others are about Smith's girlhood, the five generations of her family that founded and ran Kekaha plantation on Kauai and oddments of Hawaii history back to Captain Cook.
Whichever reason -- or all three and more -- "West of Then" combines the allure of watching a train wreck developing with snooping into someone's diary with a detective yarn.
The book is remarkably similar to the one James Ellroy wrote about his search for his murdered mom, "My Dark Places," and is also written in something close to Ellroy's Hemingway-parody style.
Ellroy's hunt was far darker. His mother really was murdered and he ended on the streets as a child criminal and addict. Smith's mother was -- as of this book's publication in 2004 -- in good enough shape to be refused admittance to Queen's hospital because she wasn't psychotic; and Smith and her younger sisters had a
tumultuous but successful upbringing. All, at least, got an education and are now functioning members of society, even if their mother isn't.
Still, reading "West of Then" is no fun. The reader hesitates to turn the page for fear of what comes next, but cannot forgo finding out.
Other than just being niele (one of the Hawaiian words defined in the glossary), a justification for reading somebody else's tale of misery could be for insight into the problem of addiction in Hawaii, of which we hear so frequently though not usually so frankly.
It's a political issue, after all. We're told that more treatment is the answer. Not for the Karen Morgans of Hawaii, it isn't.
She refuses treatment, preferring to live on the streets, supported by increasingly frustrated family, handouts, whoring and government handouts.
Forty-three million Americans may not have health insurance, but Karen Morgan does. You pay.
The kicker is that, although Morgan began using drugs as a teenager, and was so wasted she abandoned Smith when she was in her late 20s, she got clean for about 15 years while raising two younger children.
Smith writes, "My mother kept things together while my sisters were young. Mouths to feed gave her purpose. Who needed her now?"

    4 out of 5 stars an unforgettable story by a first-time talent.......2006-07-25

One can only hope that this is merely a hint of what is to come from the talented Tara Bray Smith. It's impossible not to be moved by Tara's struggles to connect with her estranged and wayward mother.

As someone who has suffered great personal family tragedy, I can honestly say that Tara "Tells it like it is." The image she creates of Hawaiian paradise and its appearance vs. reality reflects her own inner journey; Tara hopes to reach the "paradise" where she has the mother she wants (and still believes she can have) rather than the imperfect and troubled mother she actually has.

    Ultimately, this story is unforgettable.

4 out of 5 stars A Peek Into Another World.......2005-12-03

Book is well-researched - the history & descriptions of Hawaii. Overall, this book is a tribute to her mother, and I feel sorry for Tara, now in her early 30's. She has not ACCEPTED that her mother is a self-centered, immature, lying, thieving, irresponsible, promiscuous drug addict; Karen could care less about Tara and her sisters. Tara's own life is on hold - no husband or children - while she waits for Karen ("Still, I have hope for the living") to grow up. She needs to accept reality. I'm glad Tara gave us this peek into her world, and I hope she does well in her journalism career.

4 out of 5 stars A story of never giving up when the majority would have........2005-04-24

What I liked most about this book is the author's ability in describing people's manerisms. You could easily visualize her mother's ways. How any of Karen's daughters survived to become responsible humans, is a miracle. I also loved the history in the book. The ending was very anticlimatic, but then Karen appears to be the toughest drug addict ever. Very sad that she wasn't considered sick enough for a psyciatric hospital, despite the suspected knowledge that she was injecting herself literally anywhere she could...her feet and possibly her face. I also found it touching that three sisters all by different fathers, where able to stay close when the one person they have in common is such a lost cause.

5 out of 5 stars A book set in the "real" Hawai'i!.......2005-03-30

This book is one of the very best books set in Hawai'i that I have read.
As a long-time resident of Kaua'i, I read this book with recognition of just about everything described. There were no false notes of someone trying to write about "paradise" like a tourist brochure. Just the true life that most of us who live here, especially haole (caucasian) have experienced.

This author in her first book writes with such sensitivity about life in the islands, and in her family in particular,
that you feel yourself in whatever space she creates, whether it is a forbidden trip to the island of Ni'ihau, or a visit to her Gamma's Kahala beach cottage on O'ahu.
I highly recommend this book to anyone who loves the real Hawai'i. Such an enjoyable read I never wanted it to end!

This is a great option for any person who needs a last minute piece to place in church on a Sunday morning. The arrangements have their challenges, but the pieces are written to sound absolutely beautiful. It even gives you suggestions as to when during the service a piece would be most appropriate. I have used one of these songs already and cannot wait to use more!

The combination of card-playing skills, intuition and psychology that Bridge requires makes it one of the most fascinating and difficult of all card games. A specific element of Bridge that makes it unique amongst games, both physical and mental, is that it is exclusively a doubles game. This places enormous value on partnership understanding, tolerance and cooperation.

In this user-friendly introduction to the game, prolific Bridge author Paul Lamford provides newcomers to the game with a thorough ground in the essentials of play.

This is not a book, it's a booklet of 33 pages! The tips are simplistic and obvious and can be gotten out of numerous other time management books that are better. I was completely disappointed and would have sent the book back to Amazon, but it's not worth paying the shipping to do so. I would not recommend this book to anyone.

3 out of 5 stars The Father of Reformed Biblical Theology.......2007-06-12

Geerhardus Vos is known as the father of Reformed biblical theology (i.e. the discipline that seeks to do justice to the teaching of the whole Bible, Genesis to Revelation, redemptive history etc). Vos has been very influential to many people, and this is why I wanted to learn a little about the man. When one reads Goldsworthy, Clowney, Ladd, Ridderbos, Gaffin (and virtually all the guys at Westminster Philly), you know you are reading men who are standing on the shoulders of Vos. I am fascinated by these early Princeton and Westminster guys (Hodge, Machen, Warfield, Stonehouse, Murray) and Vos and Van Til in particular. B.B. Warfield regarded Vos as "probably the best exegete Princeton ever had." Unfortunately, Vos was not very well known by anyone. It seems as if he liked it that way. He was born in Holland in 1862, studied under the Hodge brothers at Princeton, and ended up doing his doctorate at the University of Strassburg. His dissertation was an exercise in Arabic textual criticism and the title was "The Struggle and Quarrel between the Umaads and the Hashimites." Don't ask me.
He is known for emphasizing that "eschatology is the mother of theology." He took the chair of biblical theology at Princeton in 1893. He married Catherine in 1894 and had 4 kids. He liked to take walks and write poetry (part of the book contains several of his poems). He went to a rural town called Roaring Branch for 26 consecutive summers. They had a house there, and he had it moved even further out of the rural town and his neighbors never remember talking to the man or his wife. Geerhardus gets an F for missional living. He seems to have been somewhat anti-social towards those he didn't know very well. He retired to Southern Cali in 1932. He died in 1949 and Cornelius Van Til preached from 2 Cor. 5.1. One interesting fact about Vos's life is that he was around and agreed with Machen who left Princeton to found Westminster Seminary to maintain orthodoxy. No one is sure why Vos stayed.
This book will be of little interest to most. The biography was interesting to me but it had quite a bit of info on Presbyterian denomenational controversey. I merely perused most of the letters except for some that were written to Machen, Warfield, and Bavinck. While this book may not ever make it to your shelf, I highly encourage the study of biblical theology, but you may not want to start with Vos. His magnum opus was 'Biblical Theology', with 'The Pauline Eschatology,' 'The Teaching of Jesus Concerning the Kingdom of God and the Church,' 'The Teaching of the Epistle to the Hebrews,' and 'The Self-Disclosure of Jesus' have also been highly influential. If nothing else, you may want to name your first son 'Geerhardus.'

4 out of 5 stars Excellent selections and critical notes.......2006-06-29

Geerhardus Vos (1862-1949) never achieved fame beyond a small circle of students during his lifetime. Given his brillance, his long career, his clear and prolific writings, his exotic name and his institutional affliation with Princeton Seminary (the most prominent theological school in America at the time) this is just staggering. Fortunately his pioneering work in redemptive-historical work and covenant theology has been rescued from obscurity after his retirement by those who have come to appreciate its value.

Several of Vos' published works remain in print and widely studied. But those who seek to understand the context from which such original work came have long had to consult thin biographical tidbits, mostly found in a handful of libraries. This excellent volume has vastly improved this situation.

The book falls into four sections: 1. A long (65 pp.), very well-crafted biographical essay by James Dennison (who does nothing to temper his admiration for his subject.) Dennison is probably a little more conservative and doctrinaire than Vos.
                          2. A 28pp. bibliography.
                          3. Typescripts of dozens of letter by Vos. They range from his days applying for admission as student at Princeton Seminary (1883) up to the retirement years in his 80s (some as late as 1946). The majority, however, are 1889-1897. Vos' correspondence displayed here include Warfield, Kuyper, Bavinck, Machen, Ned Stonehouse and an assortment of pastors and former students. Vos is articulate, cultured, lively and concise in virtually every letter. Here we see his wide ranging opinions on German, Dutch and English-language theological works (including early takes on Barth and Bultmann), his original exegesis, his Princeton politics, his warm support of Machen, Frank Stevenson, Paul Woolley etc. after they started Westminister Seminary in 1929 (just three years before he retired from Princeton), his difficult arrangements for Kuyper's history making Stone Lectures at Princeton Seminary, etc. He comes off as massively learned, but humble and likeable.

Dennison's footnotes are concise and generally helpful (though in the case of one Seminary board political issue in the late 20s, Dennison fails to give us specific background information). There are some footnote errors, but pretty minor: Chicago Theological Seminary is confused with Univ. of Chicago Div. School at one point. p. 109 lists a Vos MS as located in the "Alumni Alcove" of Princeton Theological Seminary (which hasn't existed in ten years) -- its probably in the Manuscripts Collection of Prinecton Sem., or has a call number. Anyway, these and a few others are pretty minor blemishes on a generally careful and excellent work.

                          4. Four of Vos' poems.

Even a cursory review of this volume increases one's amazement at Vos' rather unassuming career. HOW? One explanation is that Vos only lectured outside the Princeton campus ONE time after accepting his teaching post there. He simply was not the churchman we would have expected, and as a result his influence was confined to his (often prominent) students and his readers.

P & R has done a really outstanding job packaging this book, as well.

Two great experts on the history of the Sudan coordinated a fine study of the only time a force of regular African troops were deployed to the New World. Taking place during the French intervention in Mexico, this is the story of a battalion of Sudanese infantry who fought against Juarez and his Mexican patriots.

Hill and Hogg start off with a look at the Sudan during the first half of the 19th century. Then part of an Egyptian empire, they explain why these soldiers would be sent to Mexico, and how this impacted on Egypt's foreign relations.

The work covers a wide range of topics, ranging from recruitment, training, deployment, and combat. Also nice is a look at how the surviviors played important roles in the failing Egyptian empire of the 1870s-80s.

American, French, Egyptian, and Sudanese sources are employed. An interesting work that will proabaly never be surpased. Sadly, it was Richard Hill's last book.

On the face of it, this is the story of unsolved arson at a high-glamour resort, a mystery packed with suspects that range from crusty ski bums to radical tree huggers to the resort's own corporate honchos. But underlying this entertaining true-life plot is a greater theme that is playing out across America. Here, tensions mount between the progress-minded shareholders of Vail Resorts Inc., environmentalists, and locals who simply pine for the days when they weren't priced out of having a meal--or a life--in Vail, Colorado. Elsewhere, similar hostility brews over conflicting interests in pricey tourist regions like Taos, New Mexico; the Florida Keys; and the Hamptons of New York. So while Powder Burn is an intriguing tale on its own, it also serves as a snapshot of our country as it struggles with its final growing pains. The modern corporatization of Vail Mountain is in direct contrast to its past, when a hard-drinking fellow could ride his horse into a bar and turn himself into local legend. Daniel Glick, a special correspondent for Newsweek, masterfully uses his reporter's eye for detail to deliver the spirit and breathtaking scenery of the Rocky Mountain West. He introduces personalities in rapid-fire succession, but, to his credit, the reader never feels overwhelmed or confused. The descriptions are so vivid--from the environmentalist tracking lynx paw prints through the snow to the vacationing company president staking out a Disney World pay phone as he receives updates on the 1998 fire's damage--that they remain fixed in the reader's mind as the story unfolds. It's a story that makes interesting reading for skiers, environmentalists, or anyone intrigued by the unfolding drama in our last wild places. --Jodi Mailander Farrell

                          Book Description

In October, 1998 an arson caused $12 million in damage at Vail, the country's largest ski area. A shadowy radical environmental group called the Earth Liberation Front claimed credit for what the FBI called the costliest act of ecoterrorism in U.S. history. But as it turns out, credible suspects were everywhere, since Vail was owned by a New York investment firm that had alienated a wide swath of Colorado's high country residents."Who couldn't have done this?" wondered a local sheriff's investigator. More than a clever whodunit, Powder Burn scrapes away the glitz of America's premier ski destination to reveal a cautionary tale about runaway opulance and rapid change in the New West. As the Denver Post put it, "Vail is a microcosm of the disputes over growth raging across the Rockies, and Glick's take on the fire helps to fan the flames." Packed with odd characters and paranoia, with beautiful mountains and despicable actions, Powder Burn is about corporate greed, the environment, a small town and a mysterious unsolved crime. As Vail celebrates its fortieth anniversary with a full season of hoopla and self-promotion, this book makes compelling reading for skiers, true crime enthusiasts, or anyone interested in the environmental, social, and political issues raised by the evolution of the new West.

3 out of 5 stars Intriguing, but too much vulgarity and profanity.......2004-01-28

The book is interesting as an unsolved mystery, but everyone cannot be as guilty as they sound. I struggled a bit with the writing, and did not like all of the vulgarity and profanity. It did not add anything to the book, except to make me feel like I was overhearing conversations in a cheap bar. It was also apparent from the start that Glick does not like rich people (some peoople might call them successful). He could hardly talk about them in a civil tone. He used phrases like "Outrageous luxury", and "Trophyest of trophy homes."

Powder Burn was a GREAT book that provided me with the information that i needed to know about the mystery of who tourched vail. I learned some stuff in my political geography class about this that is what got me interested in it and made me read it. I recommend it to all people who like mystery books with a small twist of history.

4 out of 5 stars Rocky Mountain Whodunnit.......2002-08-08

Vail/Beaver Creek is probably my favorite vacation spot on earth in the summertime...about the only time of year I can afford it (and even then barely). This is a fascinating book, part history of Vail, part meditation on the issues surrounding growth in the affluent west (ie, how a resort for the rich and famous affects the locals and the environment), but largely a whodunnit surrounding the 1998 arson on Vail Mountain.

I wouldn't go so far at to call this a "Rocky Mountain version of "Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil' " - Glick's writing isn't that smooth and his character development isn't that deep. But I am fascinated by this part of the country and it's a good story that he has to work with. In the end he presents all the available evidence and lets you draw your own conclusions - probably the best way to end considering that the arson itself remains unsolved.

3 out of 5 stars Great Title, Great Epilogue.......2001-08-12

My room mate asked me why it was taking so long to read this book, and my reply was that it was hard to stumble through Glick's clumsy writing. My interest, however, lay in my previous residency in CO and my interest in the subject, so I struggled through the chapters (many with very clever titles). I lived near Telluride for several years, and watched many of the same actions take place as did in Vail, re: the disparity of money and living conditions and in the attitudes of the haves and have-nots. Environmental issues are just one of the many issues in combat with residents and eco-groups against many of these new conglomerate ski companies, some with owners based far from operations.

Glick does a great job with the interviews and investigation; but his long, run-on sentences left much to be desired. If I didn't have an interest in his viewpoint on the subject, I would have put the book down in the third chapter. If you want the gist of it all, just read the epilogue, which - IMO - contains the best information and most well-written part of the book. This, alone, is worth the money, as well as the information. I'll never drive past Vail again without remembering the issues and the personal stories in this book.

                          Long live the lynx.

Dan Glick writes an impressive highly interesting treatise on the 1998 arsons on Vail Mountain. This book not only covers the fires but also the money lust and greed of Vail Associates (VA) and serves as a political-social commentary on big business in small Colorado mountain towns. For Coloradans and residents of the Rocky Mountain west, those interested in current social activism, and money hungy Wall Street-ers this is a must read.

5 out of 5 stars An extraordinary and beautiful work!.......2003-12-18

The incredible nature photography and illustrations are reason enough to buy this book!

Life on the Edge... is a book like no other. It is both specific and thorough in its description of the plants, wildlife, habitats of California that are most endangered and does so in a in a visually stunning format. It provides life history information for each species, maps that represent species/habitat occurrance, strategies for conservation and recovery, as well as supplying references on each topic for further research.

The book elegantly simplifies the complex issues surrounding natural resource management in California. It also provides a well-written ecological, legal, and historical background to why our state's precious natural resources have become so imperiled. Life On The Edge is both a detailed reference guide and an impressive addition to the coffee table.

The book is intended for experts and lay people alike. But really, anybody who has a love and appreciation of California should own "Life on the Edge."

And did I mention the beautiful color photography...
