Superbly assembled and thoroughly presented.......2003-09-12
Frank E Grizzard Jr, the senior associate editor of the "Papers of George Washington" at the University of Virginia, covers all aspects of the great Virginian's life in this superb book. Based for the most part on primary sources which are easily assessable at the end of each entry, the book has complete cross references and alphabetical table of contents. More than 200 entries are topped off at the end with 29 selected writings from Washington's papers that are arranged chronologically.
Here is a historian in complete command of primary sources and the literature of the period; indeed, the reader is in the hands of a master who knows his craft and his subject. If you have ANY interest in George Washington, this book is a must for your library.
Superlative Reference Tome about George Washington.......2002-08-28
Frank Grizzard has created the definitive biographical reference about George Washington that manages to grip the reader's attention from start to finish. Grizzard breaks the dry, disjointed bonds of the A to Z format by constructing a vivid portal through time in which the man, the players in his world, and the events of his age are brought to life in vivid, fascinating detail. George Washington: A Biographical Companion is accessible, compelling reading for most ages, and _the_ place to start before delving into the Washington biographies and collections of letters.
A Much-Needed, Invaluable Research Tool on George Washington.......2002-07-14
Frank Grizzard, associate editor of the Washington Papers, has written an invaluable research tool and a much-needed, single source of reliable information on the life and times of George Washington. The book contains about 200 informative essays on a variety of diverse topics related to Washington. Each essay is interesting, concisely written, and is chock full of information on the subject. In addition to being an outstanding reference book, it is also a great "read," and the browser will come away with a new appreciation for the character and achievements of the Father of Our Country. Highly recommend.
Presents a careful assessment of facts and history.......2002-06-05
Painstakingly compiled by Frank E. Grizzard, Jr. (Senior Associate Editor at the Papers of George Washington Editorial Project at the University of Virginia) George Washington: A Biographical Companion is a seminal and comprehensive reference. Written as a detailed supplement to straightforward biographies of America's first President, this impressive compendium contains numerous entries arranged in alphabetical order of the people places, and things that were important in Washington's life and times. Each entry presents a careful assessment of facts and history, and how they related to George Washington himself. George Washington: A Biographical Companion is first-rate, strongly recommended supplement to academic and community library American History reference collections.

Book Description
The collection of music printed before 1825 in the Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge, is one of the most important in the British Isles, particularly for its holdings of late seventeenth and eighteenth-century music. Many of the books are from the library of the Museum's founder, Richard Fitzwilliam, 7th Viscount Fitzwilliam of Merrion and of Thorncastle (1745-1816), one of the finest collections of later eighteenth-century music that not only continued to grow in the early nineteenth century but also survived intact. This in itself makes the collection a fascinating monument in the history of musical taste, which is here catalogued for the first time.

What a great concept.......2005-04-13
What a great concept. I had the opportunity to purchase this book while at I-Con in Long Island. I read it in one sitting, quite an accomplishment with an RPG manual. The layout is very impressive and very easy to follow. The are rules comnplex enough to allow for a realistic type of game play, yet simple enough to learn and follow. In short the rules do not get in the way of the game itself. I can't wait to play this.
All in all I would definately recommend this to anyone.

Customer Reviews:
Comprehensive Textbook at Black Belt Level.......2007-03-28
I was surprised by the well balanced and complete coverage of the Six Sigma methodology from DMAIC, including managerial steps, all the way to statistics up through Design of Experiments. The all inclusive topics seem to parallel full Black Belt training. I would expect green belts to be offered selections from the book in a standard course. I would say no other book has this "textbooky" look and feel (that is not meant as a criticism). At the end of chapters find Minitab instructions including screen shots. The material is well written, hence understandable, hence I think this is one of the best overall introductions to the subject without slamming the reader with high levels of mathematical theory.
Six Sigma GB .......2007-03-13
I think this book is an excellent resource for experienced Six Sima managers. However, if you want to buy this book as a study guide for the SSGB certification test, or as an introduction to Six Sigma, it isn't going to help you out much. I guess my lowered rating is due to the fact that the book didn't meet my expectations as it was described on the Amazon site.
An Excellent Introduction to Six Sigma.......2006-07-20
This book was well worth my time and money! Being a Six Sigma beginer, I found this book to be easy to follow and comprehend.
Explained is the DMAIC process model, Voice of Customer (VOC), Voice of Process (VOP)and Design of Experements (DOE) in clarifying detail. Best of all, it includes step-by-step explanations of project experiments and the statistical analyses from the expereiments using Minitab 14!
Whether you want to learn the basics of the Six Sigma process (Chapters 1-8) and / or basic Six Sigma statistical tools and methods (Chapters 9-15), I highly recommend this book!
Note: Minitab 14 (Statistical software)is free for 30 days and the associated minitab-formatted excercise worksheets are down-loadable from the publisher's website.
Practical Six Sigma Guide.......2006-05-22
Six Sigma for Green Belts and Champions is a completely accessible guide for actually doing Six Sigma. It is a must read for anyone interested in Six Sigma management.
Accomplished promised ETA.......2005-09-29
The book arrived exactly on the day they told me it was going to arrive. It was worthwhile to save money buying through here rather than paying more through a bookstore.
Book Description
Extensive biography of jazz saxophonist Paul Desmond, one of the major jazz figures of all time, written by noted jazz critic Doug Ramsey. Large format (10x11"), hard bound with dust jacket, 372 pages, 190 photos, matte paper; complete with discography of all Desmond recordings.
Customer Reviews:
The Public and Private Lives of Paul Desmond.......2007-01-17
I've read the first 50 pages or so and I am really enjoying the book and the photos. I am a volunteer jazz DJ and I'm finding a lot of good information to use on my jazz show, "Jazztime with Don". The station is an NPR affiliate, KAJX - Aspen Public Radio. [...]
Take Five:The Public and Private Lives of Paul Desmond.......2007-01-04
A very interesting and complete biography of this brilliant musician.
It let us inside his very private life. He had a very wicked wit although
he was self deprecating.
A Treat.......2006-12-30
After reading this book from cover to cover, I thought that Matt Schudel's editorial piece was a bit harsh. The book illuminates Desmond's life far beyond what most jazz fans can glean from the meager pickings of liner notes. I would have to say that Desmond emerges from the pages as a complex, intensely private, humorous individual, with a personality that maintains the reader's steady interest. At times, the book doesn't flow all that easily and, though the layout is superb, there are many text boxes that are a challenge for the eyes. There are also copies of sheet music that will add content for those who read music and nothing for those who don't. On balance, I enjoyed the book and feel I was rewarded with a much better understanding of this unique talent. I found it to be an entertaining read. The quality of the book itself (i.e. the paper, the photos, the layout) is certainly worth the price.
Things you never knew about the greatest alto sax player ever.......2006-11-12
As a jazz fan all of my (long) adult life, I thought I was quite conversant with the lives of the jazz greats. Not so with Paul Desmond. This bio, the size of a coffee table book, superbly traces his life as a student of all musical genres, of his intense desire to achieve perfection in his own playing and in his compositions. It covers his early doubts regarding a career in writing rather than music; his periods of self doubt and introspection. A major revelation to me was that success might not have come to him or to Dave Brubeck if they had not discovered each other. They read each others musical minds on the fly making for some of the most delightful jazz ever.
And the book tells it all with many, many quotes from those who knew Paul well.
Take Five: The Public and Private Lives of Paul Desmond.......2006-11-04
I great book. I plan to keep it on my coffee table. It's more than about Paul. It's about Brubeck and the rest of the great musicians in that era-1950 to 1970 or so.

La Grande Armee.......2000-09-17
Guy Dempsey is one of the best uniformologists that is active today, and this assembly of the eyewitness drawings of Napoleon's Grande Armee in Hamburg in 1807 is superb. The prints are a valuable primary source, but they are brought to life by the author's authoritative narrative, which gives this little gem of a book double the value. Considerable expert research went into this book, and it is one of the best sources for what the Grande Armee looked like on campaign. The originals of the Otto Manuscript, from which these prints are taken, are in the Anne Brown Military Collection at Brown University, the unrivalled source for much archival material for the Napoleonic period in the United States. Mr. Dempsey has done us all a great service by reproducing these prints and by his careful, methodical research and narrative. This book is a must for the serious student of the period.
An essential source.......2000-01-23
The Otto Manuscript, containing a number of paintings of the soldiers of Napoleon's Grande Armee in the year of Friedland, was apparently painted from life by an amateur with an eye for detail. As a primary source, it is invaluable for its evidence of the actual appearance of the French army at the height of its greatness under Napoleon, and during a period when uniform regulations were altering the basic appearance of the soldier. This volume presents, for the first time, color reproductions of all of the plates, at a useful size, with commentary by the author. The reproduction is of excellent quality, and places this book on the "must have" list for anyone interested in Napoleonic uniforms.
The commentary is perhaps less consistently helpful. The author is apparently an amateur scholar and unfamiliar with the conventions of referencing sources. He also does not have a very good eye for detail, as in several places he makes observations concerning the paintings that are belied by a careful examination of the illustration. His views on the fading/discolouration of watercolor pigments do not reflect much familiarity with the chemistry and behaviour of those pigments, and so the comments regarding each figure must be treated cautiously. On the other hand, his introduction provides an excellent exposition of the history of the document and a cogent analysis of its reliability.
Despite these minor failings, Mr. Dempsey is to be commended for bringing these paintings to publication in a work of such a high standard.
Outstanding........1999-05-12
Little needs to be said. If this book were only a reproduction of these illustrations, it would be a bargain, but Dempsey's commentary provides a great deal of insight placing the illustrations in context and identifying anomolies and commonalities.

Book Description
Organic pollutants continue to be a major hazard in the environment. Often difficult to measure accurately and to deal with effectively, these compounds feature more and more prominently in courses on environmental toxicology and environmental sciences. This much needed book is a companion to the highly praised Principles of Ecotoxicology. It covers organic pollutants in greater depth and detail than has been covered in a textbook before. The first part covers issues such as: · chemical warfare · metabolism of pollutants in animals and plants · environmental fate, and effects within ecosystems This is followed up with discussion of particular pollutants such as: · organochloride insecticides · PCBs · dioxins · organometallic compounds · polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons · anticoagulant rodenticides amongst others The book concludes with coverage of ecotoxicity testing, biomarkers and bioassays and future prospects for improved assessment of the dangers these compounds pose. There is no other single, concise source of information on these compounds at a level suitable for senior undergraduates and postgraduates. Professionals working within the fields of environmental toxicology and environmental science will also find it a valuable reference.
