Book Description
Born in Scotland, Philip Gray is now a journalist living in Canada, but in WW2 he found himself captain of the crew of a 'mighty Lanc', operating with 186 Squadron as the RAF took the war right into the heart of Germany. Both Gray and his crew felt they were in charge of the undisputed king of the skies, but danger lurked around every corner and on every mission.
In an engaging yet frank style, Gray reveals the true relationships between himself and his team, and between the team members themselves. He also searches his own soul as he struggles to survive in love and war.
Customer Reviews:
I would recommend this to anyone.......2003-07-21
Although I have not actually had a chance yet to fully finish reading this great book, I would like to say that I have met Philip Gray personally at the Toronto Aerospace Museum on the Canadian Forces Base (CFB) Downsview.
Having talked to Philip several times, I can say that he remains very sharp minded, and can tell you all kinds of interesting stories from his colorful life.
It's very rare to meet someone who has such excellent recall of times nearly 60 years in the past.
If you're ever in Toronto, you should drop by the museum, and get to see the restoration (in progress) of a Lancaster bomber. Philip is around quite often to give you a personal tour.

Book Description
Helping Your Child Overcome an Eating Disorder is comprehensive, practical, and filled with scientifically based strategies for parents of children with bulimia or anorexia, written by the directors of the Yale Center for Eating and Weight Disorders. Puberty and adolescence are difficult enough; adding an eating disorder makes it doubly difficult for the parent who may already feel overwhelmed. This guide shows parents how to talk with their children about this touchy subject, access the latest cognitive-behavioral techniques, deal with eating and exercise in the home, find a good therapist, and take charge of ensuring a child's recovery. The book explores issues like depression and anxiety and includes questionnaires, checklists for ongoing evaluation, and charts for monitoring and developing positive eating patterns. Each chapter includes case studies and a "Creating Solutions" section.

Better than much of what I've come across so far........2005-11-16
Bethany Teachman et al., Helping Your Child Overcome an Eating Disorder (New Harbinger Publications, 2003)
I like the way this book is laid out; a good portion of it is in workbook form, for you to write down answers to the questions the authors ask you as they go along. It's also relatively easy reading, and clearly written.
As with, seemingly, most books on the subject of childhood and teen eating disorders, the authors tend to focus more on anorexia and bulimia than binge eating disorder, but not to the extent of some of the books I've either read or skimmed on the subject. And the authors do address the subject more in depth than a number of books.

Follow America's "chile trail"-from Louisiana to Texas to Baja, California-and sample a taste of some of the country's most famous and delicious chile concoctions. America's tastes are changing: salsa and hot sauce outsell barbecue sauce, ketchup and mustard combined!
Customer Reviews:
On the Chili Trail: 100 Great Recipes from Across America.......2005-10-22
Well presented work on America's uniqucipes from thee contribution to world of food; the chili pepper.
Cooking with chilis means a little more work for the cook, but Coyote Joe brings it all together. I liked the whole loin of pork roast (bone in) the best so far. Looking forward to cooking more receipes from this fine book.
Wish the publisher could have sprung for more color pictures to go with the recipes.
Book Description
Do-it-yourself car restorer Tom Benford walks readers through everything they need to know about finding classic cars, assessing their value, finding parts, deciding on replacement parts versus originals, and estimating completion time. From setting up the workshop to putting the finishing touches on the final coat of wax, this guide offers tips and step-by-step instructions for repairing everything from brake pads to door dings.
Customer Reviews:
Yes, I'm an Idiot.......2007-08-23
Not exactly what I was looking for, but there was certainly much I didn't already know. Great resource referrals! I wanted more specific, step by step instructions, but now I know where to get it from reading this. I did not waste my time or money.
One of the Best Starter Books.......2005-08-15
By far a really, really good starter book for anyone looking to see what it would take to get into restoring a classic car. If you know the basics; budgeting, tools needed, what car to look for this is not the book for you.
But for those who haven't even scoped the project this is a great starting point to layout your plan of how you are going to proceed or whether your should proceed at all.
A Good Beginner's Guide.......2005-07-24
If you already know a lot about Pitman arms, rag joints, pinion gears, and harmonic balancers, then this book is probably not for you. After all, the word, "idiot," is in the title. As the new owner of a collector car who hasn't much of a clue where to start, I found it to be perfectly suited to my needs and knowledge level. The information is presented in such a way as to apply to a wide range of vehicle types, which I especially liked, since my specific vehicle interests don't correspond at all with the author's. Most importantly, the author is a good writer and the book is enjoyable to read, cover to cover. (There are a few typos, which always surprises me.) Overall, a good value and a great introduction to the topic for beginners.

Classic clothes, quick techniques, and goof-proof patterns add up to a perfect wardrobe for the busy sewer. No matter what your size, you can create a wardrobe with designer details by following the expert instructions of sewing star Sandra Betzina.
Customer Reviews:
What? No patterns included with the book?.......2006-03-22
No Time to Sew is a great addition to a sewer's library. I had heard about it at an online list and decided I needed it. It is well illustrated, with plenty of tips and short cuts. The instructions refer to Betzina's own patterns that were originally included with the book. However, this edition, or the one from Amazon.com did not include the patterns.
since I had to purchase the patterns from another source, at added expense, I should have shopped around, paid full price and gotten the patterns.
The book is good for what it's worth, but has little value without the patterns
No patterns included........2005-10-15
I have just received the book which I bought "new" from Amazon -- but no patterns are included. Since techniques are based on the patterns which should come with the book, without them, the book is not useful.
I called Amazon and explained that I need only the "patterns". They sent me another copy of the book. Again, without the patterns.
Would some one at Amazon look into this please? This book is of no use without the patterns!
Since I liked the book, I later ordered the patterns directly from the Sandra Betzina site.
No Time to Sew: Fast and Fabulous Patterns & Techniques for Sewing a Figure-Flattering Wardrobe.......2005-08-29
This has proved to be a really useful book, lots of hints and techniques I haven't encountered before that have made my finished garments much better. As a self taught sewer this has been a great resource. I will be buying more of Sandra Betzina's books.
Patterns not included.......2005-07-03
I bought the book with the understanding that the patterns were included, and they aren't so why purchase a new book when you still have to pay for the patterns. That is the reason I'm returning the book.
San Jose, CA
Brand New Book from Amazon, But No Patterns???.......2005-06-04
I only just received my brand new copy from Amazon, and have been scratching my head. I read all the other reviews about making sure to buy a new copy - - - NOT used - - - because of the supposedly included patterns that the book is based on. I don't quite understand. I should have gotten patterns with this book - right? It's brand new, with the price to prove it! Not from Amazon Marketplace or used, NEW. WHERE ARE MY PATTERNS???
I can't use the book without the patterns --- if there were minus stars, that's what I'd give this book - because they sold it to me with the understanding that the patterns would be included - so minus the patterns equals minus stars.

Book Description
Far from being passive elements in the landscape, plants have developed many sophisticated chemical and mechanical means of deterring organisms that seek to prey on them. This volume draws together research from ecology, evolution, agronomy, and plant pathology to produce an ecological genetics perspective on plant resistance in both natural and agricultural systems. By emphasizing the ecological and evolutionary basis of resistance, the book makes an important contribution to the study of how phytophages and plants coevolve.
Plant Resistance to Herbivores and Pathogens not only reviews the literature pertaining to plant resistance from a number of traditionally separate fields but also examines significant questions that will drive future research. Among the topics explored are selection for resistance in plants and for virulence in phytophages; methods for studying natural variation in plant resistance; the factors that maintain intraspecific variation in resistance; and the ecological consequences of within-population genetic variation for herbivorous insects and fungal pathogens.

Book Description
This book presents a collection of papers that give a comprehensive description of the major areas of research on the interactions between plants and their pathogens. State-of-the-art knowledge about research on microbial avirulence genes and plant resistance genes, about pathogenicity factors and signals for establishment of infection, about elicitors and intermediates in the signalling pathway, and about the genes involved in plant responses to pathogens and environmental stress is reviewed.
The different topics covered show that modern tools of plant cellular and molecular biology are now available to investigate very significant models of plant-pathogen interactions and to identify the molecular determinants of the two partners that trigger defence responses, the signals involved and the mechanism of their transduction, the spatial and temporal regulation of defence gene expression in relation to the spread or localization of the pathogen.
The first trials to exploit these results for enhancing plant resistance and crop field by biotechnology are presented. The book is a main reference source for research scientists and advanced students.

Book Description
Art Tatum defined the limits of the possible in jazz piano. Gunther Schuller called Tatum's playing "a marvel of perfection.... His deep-in-the-keys full piano sonority, the tone and touch control in pyrotechnical passages...are miracles of performance." Whitney Balliett wrote "no pianist has ever hit notes more beautifully. Each one--no matter how fast the tempo--was light and complete and resonant, like the letters on a finely printed page." His famous runs have been compared to the arc left against the night sky by a Fourth-of-July sparkler. And to have heard him play, one musician said, "was as awe-inspiring as to have seen the Grand Canyon or Halley's Comet." Now, in Too Marvelous For Words, James Lester provides the first full-length biography of the greatest virtuoso performer in the history of jazz. Before this volume, little was known about Tatum, even among jazz afficionados. What were his origins, who taught him and who provided early pianistic influences, how did he break into the jazz field, what role did he play in the development of other jazz players, and what was he like when he wasn't playing? To answer these questions, Lester has conducted almost a hundred interviews for this book, with surviving family, childhood friends, schoolteachers, and the famous jazz musicians who played with him or knew him. Lester creates a memorable portrait of this unique musician and of the vibrant jazz world of the 1930s and 1940s, capturing the complexity and vitality of this remarkable performer. Tatum, who was virtually blind, suffering between 70% and 90% visual impairment, emerges as cheerful, fun-loving, energetic and out-going, with none of the demonic self-destructiveness that seemed to haunt such jazz greats as Charlie Parker or Billie Holiday. He often joked about his blindness, but did not like it mentioned as a handicap and preferred to pre-plan his entrance to the piano in a club, rather than have someone lead him there. He was simply inexhaustible and had a life-long habit of staying up all night after a gig, usually seeking an after-hours club in which to listen and play until daybreak. Lester also reveals that Tatum was generous with younger players, but his extraordinary technical brilliance often devastated them. No less a talent than Oscar Peterson remembers that after first hearing Tatum, "I gave up the piano for two solid months, and I had crying fits at night." And Les Paul remarked that after hearing Tatum for the first time, he quit piano completely and began playing guitar. Perhaps most important, Lester provides a thorough, knowledgeable discussion of Tatum's music, from his early influences, such as stride pianist Fats Waller, to his mature style in which Liszt, Rachmaninoff, Debussy, Waller, and Earl Hines all became grist for his harmonic mill. From unexceptional origins in Toledo, Ohio, Art Tatum evolved into a world-class musician whose importance in jazz is comparable to Louis Armstrong and Charlie Parker and whose command of the piano captured the admiration of Horowitz and Paderewski. Too Marvelous For Words is the first full portrait of this extraordinary musical genius.
Customer Reviews:
A Difficult task for the biographer........2007-07-26
I was disappointed although I don't think the fault lies with the author. He faced an uphill task as he notes with fading memories and a lack of cooperation with the family and other sources. Nor were the usual diaries or letters available. Although the matter is apparently in some dispute, there is little doubt that Tatum was legally, and for all practical purposes, blind. He was not likely to leave a written record behind.
It was a sadder story than I anticipated. Reading between the lines, its hard not to conclude that alcoholism killed him. His family most likely wanted no part of this project because they didn't want to dredge all that up again.
So, much of the story rests on speculation and supposition of the author. I think he exercises good judgment on most issues except the issue of Fats Waller's influence on Tatum's piano playing. One of the few statements Tatum had on the record was that his primary influence was Fats Waller. The author chooses Earl Fatha Hines as the more likely influence.
Well, I'm with Tatum on this issue. I hear Waller's touch, I hear Waller's whole piano sound. I hear Waller in the background. Of course, Tatum recasts the sound of stride piano in a new light, but there is a strong element of stride piano with more than a few tips of the hat to Waller.
This doesn't in any way diminish Hines as a wonderful and influential piano player. But, Earl HInes piano in the 1920's came out of the riffs and breaks structure used by the Chicago bands of that era, Armstrong and Morton. The runs that Hines played were really akin to the breaks a soloist in the 20's would play between two band riffs. He developed and expanded on that idea. I hear Hines in Teddy Wilson and Nat King Cole, not Tatum.
Tatum's piano is based on Harlem stride all the way.
With Tatum, the piano was his everything. Away from the piano, he was evidently a lost soul. I'm thankful that Norman Granz recorded Tatum in his last years and preserved his aptly named "Solo Masterpieces" for us to hear.
"God is in the house.".......2006-04-15
Art Tatum is considered by many to be the greatest jazz pianist who ever lived. Though blind in one eye and with limited sight in the other, he was gifted with perfect pitch and, through study and practice, developed the most advanced harmonic and melodic means of improvising on a song known (some musicians were afraid to play with him, knowing they couldn't keep up with his musicianship). He was born in Toledo, Ohio, and began playing piano at an early age, performing professionally on the radio by age 17. He went to NYC, the jazz Mecca, in 1932, and soon had every jazz pianist in the city in awe of him. He made a series of recordings for Decca between 1934 and 1941, often in a solo setting, many of which are still considered definitive performances. He also began working on fabled 52nd Street with a trio consisting of Slam Stewart (bass) and Tiny Grimes (guitar), which became a big success. In the 1950s, Norman Granz recorded Tatum in marathon sessions, some with guest artists, others in the solo format, that became a monument to his legacy. Tatum died in LA in 1956.
James Lester has written an entertaining and informative biography of the great pianist. He interviewed hundreds of musicians who knew or played with Art, and the excerpts from these interviews, which are interspersed throughout the text, are delightful. What impressed most musicians about Tatum's playing was his sheer musical brilliance and technical virtuosity. Nobody played MORE piano than Tatum. Lester also deals with the down sides to Art's life: his unstable marriage and family life, the incredibly heavy drinking (one fellow pianist who knew him reported that he believed it was "routine" for Tatum to drink two quarts of whiskey and a case of beer every 24 hours). But through it all Art Tatum produced some of the most remarkable jazz piano music ever heard. Lester's biography serves such a master well.
James Lester on Art Tatum.......2002-10-20
It's been about 10 years since this book was published. I've read it over and over more than 10 times.Lester never made any bones about finding new material about Art. He always admitted that he was just putting pen to paper about Tatum using known history, just because nobody else had seen fit to do so--- yet.
Lester loved that man-- as did anybody who was lucky enough to know him. I was one of the lucky ones. The book is a gem; it manages to get to the very essence of Tatum, the man. We all know everything about Tatum the brilliant super-pianist. Now you have the chance to read about Tatum, the boy next door.
...
A truly delightful portrait of a staggering genius.......2002-02-17
This is not an ordinary biography of an extraordinary musian: it is an excellent biography. It's the best jazz bio I have read, in fact. Concise, compelling, carefully crafted into a meaningful story about the greatest jazz pianist ever. The book is built on dozens of interviews with people who had entered or witnessed moments of Tatum's life. Lester quotes generously, nimbly weaving the material together to form a rich picture of an often elusive character. Tatum emerges as an absorbing, riveting figure. This is a must for all those fascinated with the origins and development of genius: innate or acquired? And for those fascinated with Tatum: unique phenomenon or "mere" virtuoso? There is much food for thought here.
The essential story of Art Tatum........2001-12-04
(...) Reading "Too Marvelous For Words" is true to Tatum's life. Jim Lester, he a trombonist, presents an exhaustive survey of who the man was. I've read and re-read the book several times; getting more enjoyment each time.
