This book is a great look at what life was like as a career military pilot from the beginning of WWII to the end of the Vietnaum conflict. Lots of good insights into what it was like to live in post-war Germany.

Book Description
From the fourth-grade girl who never gets invited to a birthday party because classmates think she’s “weird” to the geek who is terrific at math but is failing every other subject, quirky children are different from other kids in ways that they–and their parents–have a hard time understanding. They present a host of challenges that standard parenting books fail to address. Now, in Quirky Kids, seasoned pediatricians Perri Klass and Eileen Costello provide the expert guidance that families with quirky children so desperately need.
Klass and Costello illuminate the confusing list of terms often applied to quirky children–from Asperger’s syndrome and nonverbal learning disability to obsessive-compulsive behavior and sensory integration dysfunction. The authors also discuss various therapy options, coping strategies, and available medications. Most of all, they will help quirky kids lead rich, fulfilling lives at home, at school, even on the playground.
Customer Reviews:
No one I think is in my tree.......2007-01-07
When I was a little kid, so-called "quirky" kids were just called "weirdo-" or worse- and ostracized. Now, the subtleties of developmental disorders and learning disabilities are better understood, and the kids get a diagnosis. But we all know how inexact this still is. The difference between a kid with Asperger's, pervasive developmental delay, nonverbal learning disorder, sensory integration dysfunction or attention deficit disorder might have something to do with the child's unique blend of strengths and weaknesses, but might also have a lot to do with what doctor is doing the diagnosing and through what particular lens they happen to see the world that week. It's just the limitations of the science at this point, but the good news is that that isn't the most important part of the story. Forget the labels. Let's just figure out how to help kids make the most of their strengths and best accommodate or compensate for their weaknesses. The concept of "quirky" kids is a nice one for getting beyond the distraction of diagnostic labels. Drs. Klass and Costello defend the term in their introduction but pointing out that it's "not pejorative. In fact, it's sometimes a compliment." It suggests unusual characteristics, "challenging yet often charming."
Dr. Klass and Dr. Costello are not psychiatrists or child development experts. They are practicing primary-care pediatricians who are also parents. They appreciate the stress parents are under, and I think they strike the right tone in this book. Helpful, factual information is provided in a way that is mostly reassuring but also does not minimize legitimate obstacles. You don't want to patronize parents dealing with real issues, but overly anxious parenting is not in the best interest of the family either.
There are reasons to be optimistic. While there are kids with profound disabilities out there, the quirky kids, those who would have gone undiagnosed a generation ago, mostly end up okay. As the authors point out, "adults are infinitely more accepting than children and teenagers," and quirky kids often thrive when they find a suitable niche in the adult world, whether it be academics, computers, or whatever other vocation where they can pursue their interests.
So the goal is for parents to be educated. Not for parents to try and be experts, but for them to know the right questions to ask their children's doctors, to anticipate what types of situations will be particularly challenging for their children, to know how to talk about their children with relatives, friends, the babysitter. For parents to know that it doesn't make them bad parents if they get irritated and frustrated by their children at times. And for parents to remember to treasure their children for who they are, for the gifts and perspectives they bring to the world.
Between best-selling books and internet sites, there is no shortage of information out there for parents, but it is a mixed bag. For my money, this is the book I would recommend for parents of quirky kids looking for one reliable resource to guide them through their next steps.
Down to earth guidance for parents of quirky kids.......2006-10-30
No matter how much you love and admire your child, learning he is different and will likely have a more challenging life is heartbreaking. I have always loved and adored my quirky son and this book helped me better understand him. When he started learning his letters and reading all before the age of 2, we just thought he was precocious. When he recently started preschool and shut down, I realized there was more to the picture which led to a diagnosis of Asperger's. This book has such a loving title and attitude and yet sets a realistic tone for the challenges of raising a quirky kid. It covered almost every aspect I could hope such a book would cover (schools, playdates, puberty, etc.). My only complaint is that it gave short shrift to a discussion of tantrums and other disciplinary issues unique to raising a child with an Autistic Spectrum Disorder and how best to approach these in a loving but effective way. Nevertheless, an excellent resource for parents, teachers, grandparents and others who care for a quirky kid. Highly recommended.
Quiky Kids was helpful and hopeful.......2006-07-29
Quirky Kids was written by two pediatricians who have special knowledge of developmental delays in children. Their book is helpful and hopeful while being realistic. It breaks the news about the nature of children's developmental delays without scaring parents and it immediately offers many ideas of how and where to get help. Experienced parents' stories give hope and light at the end of the tunnel of diagnosis and treatment.
Having once been a "quirky kid"................2006-06-05
......I am here to tell you that your Asperger Syndrome teen WILL NOT BE DATING. If you think they will, you are in some MAJOR denial. One star deducted for this. If they ever have any relationships with the opposite sex (or same sex, if they are so inclined), they will be in their twenties at least.
As for the person who didn't remember any autistic kids growing up, the spectral disorders like Asperger's and PDD-NOS were not recognized and the kids were considered weird, different, or even retarded. I know a woman whose son is severely autistic and lives in an institution; he is in his 60s, so it's nothing new.
I do not have an official ASD diagnosis but have suspected for some years that I may have one.
That the doctors continue to recommend vaccinations was, IMHO, wise. If a relative had a documented reaction to one, yes, be hesitant and wait, but don't swear them off and risk serious illness or death because of the threat of something that probably won't happen.
An excellent book, well worth the effort...........2005-01-08
There are so many books out there devoted to helping the parents of "special" kids. Most of them, I've found, are either way too touchy-feely or too text-booky. You can usually tell within the first few chapters what particular agenda the author will be focusing on, and with a few exceptions (such as "The Out-of-Sync Child") I hadn't yet found one that really worked for me. This book, however, drew me in right away and kept me coming back at any opportunity I could grab. (Any book that can have me reaching for it during the few minutes it takes to cook fish sticks in the microwave, well, that's a big deal.)
My child is not just "difficult" or "spirited" - and he's also not afflicted in an "obvious" way (ie., on one of his good days, I doubt anyone would think something was amiss with the boy). He exists in that strange place where his behaviors, many of which are far beyond his control, just don't fit in with typical society...a true "quirky kid". This book addresses so many of the issues and situations that our family deals with on a daily basis (and those we will probably have to deal with in the future), and offers sensible, real-life suggestions. The authors seem to have a true understanding of what our kids go through, what the families go through, and where we might be able to make some changes for the better.

Book Description
REMEMBER THE KIDS who just didn't fit in when you were a child? Maybe they stood too close or talked too loud. We called them hurtful names and they never understood why. Clinical psychologists Stephen Nowicki, Jr. and Marshall Duke call these children dyssemic, and have some ideas about how to help them. Dyssemic children do not comprehend nonverbal messages in much the same way that dyslexics do not correctly process the written word. Nonverbal language plays a vital role in our communication with others, and children who understand or misuse it may face painful social rejection, which becomes a part of their lives for the rest of their lives. In Helping the Child Who Doesn't Fit In, Nowicki and Duke reveal the range of dyssmia that may affect a child and show parents and teachers how to simply assess the extent of a child's problems. Simple exercises at the end of each chapter offer guidance for educating yourself and your child nonverbally.
Customer Reviews:
A good resource for teaching children social skills.......2004-12-17
This book explains how to teach a child better social skills. Unlike most books on this topic, "Helping the Child Who Doesn't Fit In" actually addresses social skills (e.g., don't stand too close). The other books I've tried either teach manners (e.g., please & thank you) or teach your child to obey house rules (e.g., pick up toys without being told). Thats all well and good, but it does nothing to improve your child's social skills!
This book gets 5 stars from me (excellent quality) because it (1) clearly explains several key aspects of social skills, and (2) lists a variety of effective ways to teach these skills to your child.
Take it with a grain of salt.......2004-12-06
Consumers of pop psychology books should always keep in mind that much of the theory and practice of clinical psychology is more an art than a science. The suggestions made in mid-twentieth century marriage or parenting books seem bizarre to modern eyes and there is every reason to believe that many of theories we hold today will seem equally antiquated in fifty years. Thus any good psychology teacher (and yes I'm one of those), trains their students to question the factual basis of psychological claims. You must always ask what evidence there is for a theory and how else that evidence might be explained.
Unfortunately the authors of this book make no effort to distinguish between hard facts and their beliefs and suppositions. In fact, they never bother to tell the reader how they reached these conclusion. Many of their claims would take decades of research to substantiate but they never allude to any such work.
Worse yet, several of their arguments fly straight in the face of well-established facts. This is most clear when they compare the acquisition of verbal and nonverbal communication. The authors argue that the knowledge that guides verbal communication is explicitly taught in school, while the knowledge that guides nonverbal communication is not. The implication seems to be that this lack of instruction might account for many children's difficulties with nonverbal communication.
I would hope that anyone who is ever taken an introductory psychology course could see the flaws in this argument. First, while cultures with formal schooling teach grammar in school this explicit instruction plays no role in children's ability to speak their native language. Children follow the rules of their native languages for many years before they are taught grammar, people in cultures without formal education speak grammatically, and children with language disorders do not learn to speak grammatically by attending English classes, instead they typically fail to develop an explicit knowledge of grammar because they lack the intuitions on which such theories are built. Second, the authors argument provides no explanation for why some children struggle with nonverbal language. In fact in places they seem to hint that this failure reflects a lack of experience and tutlelage, a suggestion which contradicts almost everything we know about the emergence of abilities which are typical of a species.
I bought this book as a parent looking for ways to help a child. So the problem that I had to face was whether these flaws in the authors' knowledge and reasoning, really affected the credibility of their suggestions for remediation. I think they do. First, the authors' belief that most skills are explicity taught appears to have shaped the kind of interventions that they suggest. If they had experimental evidence that these interventions worked, I could ignore the flaw in the theory but since they don't, I'm left to evaluate it based on plausibility. Second, I was left little faith in the reasoning or observational abilities of anyone who could make errors that are this obvious.
I will say that the book is written in a very friendly and straightforward style and it offers many ideas for activities that parents could easily implement. If you buy it, I'd suggest that you treat it as you would a set of suggestions offered by another parent or family memeber, rather than assuming that there is any "science" to back it up.
Truly Helpful.......2003-12-16
One of the many virtues of this splendid book is the insight it offers into the ordinary dilemmas that many children face each day and the wise insight it offers for parents and teachers who wish to help the child who lacks social skills. Its practical and sane wisdom draws upon ample psychological research, making full use of a broad range of empirical studies, yet the authors make this book accessible to readers without any background in psychology. What strikes the reader is the genuine sympathy the authors display both for the child in difficulty and the parent or teacher who wishes to help. This is a truly humane book.
Practical Advice.......1999-12-23
This book addresses reasons for kids who cant make friends because they are unaware of non verbal 'rules' between kids. They just dont catch on. The authors list about 6 clear areas to address that can be gone over with children to help remedy that. Each section has about 2 pages of suggested activities to try . I liked that while many other books offer psychobabble, this book goes into another dimension -of body language and actual body presentation. Real and practical stuff. I didnt like that the book felt as though the important information wasnt quite long enough for a book so it was padded to make it thick enough to be commercially viable. I'd bet this and their other book could be combined into one really worthwhile book.
Understanding problems of non-verbal communication.......1998-09-30
Gives understanding of the problems faced when someone does not have the ability to "get" non-verbal communication. Most of us know instinctively, by body language, what others are trying to convey. Not so with children and adults on the autistic spectrum. This book explains it all and better yet - gives concrete examples and exercises that you can do with your child at home or suggestions for the professionals to use in a school setting.

Good, not great.......2007-01-12
Some things I did not notice in reviews mentioned was that it is thin (small page count), black&white and has not as many pictures as I would have liked. But the dishes themselves are all wonderful. I just wish more time was spent on the production value of the book itself.
The Lhasa Moon Tibetan Cookbook.......2006-06-27
It is an excellent book! Also, its an easy to follow one!
Delightful Repast.......2003-05-28
I purchased this book about 3 years ago, and really enjoyed it. Being somewhat of a self-taught chef I readily buy new cookbooks. The book is well written and reads top-notch. The recipes are simple and DELICIOUS. The authoress includes a few personal ruminations from her past while a refugee in India. It doesn't take up a lot of shelf space and has a lot of practical tips. I was recently in San Francisco and had the chance to eat at the Lhasa Moon Tibetan Restaurant and meet the authoress. She is a delightful hostess and the food was fabulous and very affordable (and this was in San Francisco). Take my advice, buy the book, cook the food, and visit the restaurant!
Delightful and Delicious.................2002-05-07
............this cookbook opens with an introduction to Tibetan cooking that explains Tibetan cooking traditions, holidays, daily meals, common ingredients and the typical Tibetan kitchen, welcoming us to this wonderful and unique cuisine that Americans are so unfamiliar with. The cookbooks also contains several black and white photos of people in and around Tibet and quite a few drawings. The recipes are a pleasure to make and, if you get together with friends or family that enjoy cooking, spend a day making Tibetan momos (stuffed dumplings) together! There are recipes for chicken, beef, vegetable, spinach and spinach/cheese fillings. I can personally vouch for the chicken and vegetable fillings. Hubby and I really liked Tibetan momos!
This cookbook contains chapters on Soups, Appetizers, Momos, Noodles, Meat Dishes, Vegetable Dishes, Breads and Tsampa, Sweets and Desserts, Beverages, Cheeses and Chili Sauces and Pickles. We've enjoyed: Roasted Potato Soup, Egg Noodles in Beef Soup, Himalayan Chicken, Lamb Curry, Cabbage Stir-Fry, Eggplant with Potatoes, Steamed Bread, Sweet Yogurt Shake, and Spiced Tea. There are many more recipes that look very appealing in this cookbook and we are eager to try more, especially from the chapters we haven't delved into yet.
Honestly, this book has a few drawbacks, though. For my personal tastes, there are too many recipes that involve deep frying. Also, the authors make it clear that a fair number of recipes are either largely American inventions or American adaptations of Tibetan dishes. I wanted something a bit more authentic, but at least the authors seem scrupulously honest to tell us at each point in the cookbook where traditional Tibetan cooking has been violated. Overall though, I have enjoyed this cookbook and would recommend it despite its flaws.

Disappointing.......2004-03-16
I bought this book mainly expecting spectacular photos of quarterhorses, as these were taken by Bob Langrish. I was disappointed, as there were no really special or spectacular photos, in fact, i've taken better. I can't even say the information was very helpful. If it's more info on the AQH, you want, buy another book. However, this book would be a nice first introductory book to give someone who has never heard of a quarter horse. It took me 10 minutes to read through it. The review says it contains "prose". No it doesn't. If it's prose you want, buy another book. I've also bought the Arabian Spirit book... just hope it's better.

If you are looking for a book that will tell you everything you want to know about making the perfect pants with good diagrams as well, this is it. I can't think of a single situation that it doesn't cover.
Thin but MIGHTY .......2007-02-09
This book may be thin in size but it is MIGHTY in the information contained. I'd taken a leave of absence from sewing and changed shapes in the meantime - older patterns didn't fit anymore. With the help of this book, I'm back in business AND have learned all kinds of things I wish I had learned years ago. Can't say enough good things about this very easy to understand, logically presented book. Way to go Lynn.
The Best Pants Book in the Universe.......2005-11-20
After not sewing for about 15 years, I decided it was time to make some nice pants. My body had changed and I had difficulty identifying the myriad fitting problems. What a disaster!!!! Of course, I had invested hundreds of dollars in wonderful material and there it sat. I bought this book and went to work. This lady knows her stuff. My pants are fab and I finally understand how to fit pants to my body. I encourage any sewer at any level of accomplishment to get this wonderful book. The language is clear, the drawings and photographs are explicit and specific and address the process of making pants in a modern way. Lynn, wherever you are, thanks for a great book.
The Best Pants Book.......2002-01-19
The "Easy Guide to Sewing Pants" is the only book you will ever need to have a great pair of pants that truly fits you perfectly. I had tried many different approaches over the years but never achieved the fit I needed until I bought this book. Ms. MacIntyre's diagrams for fitting problem areas are clear, easy- to-follow; and best of all, they work! Her step-by-step instructions on how to make design changes to your basic pattern will give you many different looks with having to go through the fitting process again. I was so excited when I made a style change to my pattern and didn't have to worry about whether they would fit. No more frustration!! If that's not enough, I also found Ms. MacIntyre's construction techniques to be absolutely the best and gave me very professional results. The "Easy Guide to Sewing Pants" is a "must" for any sewer's library.
Easy Guide to Sewing Pants.......2001-06-04
For fitting and making pants, I have found the "Easy Guide to Sewing Pants" an invaluable source. The book delivers a goldmine of information that really works. Ms. MacIntyre's meticulously thorough instructions are presented in clear, concise easy-to-grasp prose that I found a constant source of pleasure when I need to search for answers. This classy book sets high standards and is a cherished addition to my sewing library.

Wonderful textbook for botanists and flora enthusiasts........2000-06-11

Customer Reviews:
The Bible on Chronic Fatigue!.......2000-08-31
This book is a must for all people who suffer with chronic fatigue and fibromyalgia. I read it slowly, trying to absorb each and every suggestion that was written.
Changed My Life (For the Better).......2000-06-30
My boss bought this book for me, and I thought it was going to be just another, "yeah, you have fibromyalgia and it's a real shame, this is how you cope with it", but instead, this book CHANGED MY LIFE! (Sorry for the run-on sentence). I had so much pain that some days I couldn't get out of bed. I would find a position that was minimally pain free and not move until I was better. It got so bad that I had to use a cane so I could get to work. But I read the book and I couldn't believe the case histories. But when the pain got so bad that I thought I would lose my job, I changed my diet (hey, what did I have to lose? ) and low and behold, within a week the pain was gone (I stopped taking pain medicine everyday), the "fog" lifted and I felt better than I had in YEARS! Another side benefit, is that I have lost weight! But I recommend this book very highly. I will also say that my doctors have pooh-poohed these results, but I firmly believe that what we eat, really effects how we feel. I just never knew how much!
A must have for the Chronic Fatigue/Fibromyalgia sufferer!.......2000-05-18
If you have or know someone who suffers from fibromyalgia (chronic muscle pain) or chronic fatigue, you absolutely must get this book. Don't waste one more minute, order it now. IT could save your life. Don't believe the naysayers who tell you that nothing can be done. There is plenty that can be done. Not all of it will work, but at least you now have a good place to get started, and techniques that have proven successful for others. Plus the book gives you excellent resources for finding the best doctors out there to get you well. Any questions feel free to contact me at srowe@nbn.net
A Book with HOPE.......2000-05-01
Anyone person suffering these illness, and has struggled with the lack of medical help, NEEDS HOPE. I felt this was truly provided in this book along with the information of Healing. Just reading this book, helped my depression of long term illness that no Dr. could see, touch or give me a Rx for. Getting older or gaining weight, being female did not cause these health problems. Seeing other accounts of similar problems has given me a place to start investigating just what is wrong with my health and so armed with this information, I think can be the first step on the path to wellness.
A must have for those afflcted, needing solid facts/answers!.......1999-11-05
After many hours of searching and reading, this book combines documented clinical facts and case studies. I too suffered with these conditions and have found this book and its treatments to produce positive results! I have been in the medical profession for 20 years and had to leave the field because of my condition, but until recently, have I put these practices to the test, and have found those that work for me. If you really suffer from this, trust me, YOU NEED this book. For those interested, please feel free to write me and I'll discuss with you my own treatment plan and results..

Customer Reviews:
good book, faulty premise.......2001-01-26
This book seems well researched and offers some new insight into the life of Maurice Ravel. However, the main premise of this book is the assertion that Ravel was homosexual. It is true that little is known about Ravel's personal life and it is also true that many fine biographies have been written about Ravel without delving into this subject. The problem is that Mr. Ivry offers little, in my opinion, to substantiate the claim. Still, this book offers much to Ravel fans. Besides, it really doesn't matter what Ravel's sexual preferance was. Mr. Ivry presents some interesting angles on Ravel's creative output. Though I have read at least 7 or 8 Ravel biographies prior to this one I still learned a few new things and for this I am grateful.

Book Description
In this enchanting story based on the famous opera L’Enfant et les Sortileges (The Child and the Spell), stunning illustrations and playful language will captivate young children while also introducing them to classical music. When Thomas’ math problems give him trouble, he lets out a wild tantrum, ripping apart his favorite book, knocking over his clock, and overturning his tea and cake. But when he plops down into his favorite armchair, the chair decides it has had enough of the boy’s bad behavior. It blows Thomas into a strange place in time where Thomas comes face-to-face with the very objects he just broke.
