Book Description

HISTORICAL GEOLOGY: EVOLUTION OF EARTH AND LIFE THROUGH TIME teaches students basic geologic principles as well as how scientists apply these principles to unravel Earth?s history. Wicander and Monroe present a balanced overview of both the geological and biological history of Earth as a continuum of inter-related events. These events reflect the underlying principles and processes that have shaped our planet. The authors also explain the historical development of these basic principles and processes, and their importance in deciphering Earth history. Three major themes?time, evolutionary theory, and plate tectonics?are woven together throughout the book. These themes help students link essential material to enhance their understanding of historical geology.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars strong explanation of evolution.......2006-02-17

The authors give a strong explanation of biological evolution, from its earliest unicellular origins to the present. Much fossil and DNA evidence is summarised. Including recent findings in fossil digs from the 90s.

They point out that many so-called missing links are not. For relations between genera, families, orders and classes, the intermediate forms ("links") are often present in the fossil record. Amongst the cases cited are the origins of whales and sea cows.

More generally, the book has numerous instances where transitions found in fossils are explained in terms of limbs or bones developing, or suchlike, so that you can clearly see how one fossil is the evolutionary ancestor of another later fossil. As in the early fishes. Where those who developed jaws with bones were then more able to hunt other fishes; a strong evolutionary advantage. While the move onto land is shown in fossils that had fins with muscles. This allowed for propulsion above water, where the original advantage was to let the fish move around under water, in mud or vegetation.

Geology is also emphasised. Often giving rise to various ore and petroleum bodies found today. Plus plate tectonics is shown to account for the continental drifts and the breakup of Gondwanaland.

      5 out of 5 stars Good job.......2007-09-10

Got it a week before school started, which is about two weeks before the school bookstore shipped me my other textbooks. Thanks for that. Also, it was at a better price than the school bookstore tried to sell it to me for. An all around good buy and purchasing experience.

      5 out of 5 stars Good book.......2007-02-13

The book is very user friendly and explains Historical geology in a learning way

4 out of 5 stars Great text .......2007-01-19

This most recent edition includes an updated planetary system as well as an improved structure of the geologic time scale. It is, however, ridiculously expensive when compared to the older edition. In my opinion,I do not believe that it is worth the added cost.

4 out of 5 stars Best Reference Book available on a Neglected Opening.......2004-01-13

This book is well thought out. It contains a number of well annotated games in virtually every sub-variation of the Philidor defense.

I played the philidor defense in tournament conditions over a period of about two years at the 1700-1800 USCF level. I found that players of the white pieces were not well equipped to handle the positions over-the-board with clocks ticking.

Frequently I was able to equalize (or even much better) fairly early in game.

I agree with the comments of the other reviewers in this regard.

The philidor may appeal to both stodgy, positional wood-pushers, and very agressive players as well. For example the philidor counter-gambit (1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 d6 3. d4 f5!?) is razor sharp and requires very accurate play (for both sides).

For the type of player that thinks Nimzovich was brilliant (a.k.a blockade, restrain, etc. etc.) the Hanham variation would appeal the most. (1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 d6 3. d4 Nf6, etc.).

This is a good book on a very underrated opening. It could be used as a way to develop an very effective (and relatively low maintenance repertoire against 1. e4).

                          5 out of 5 stars Excellent book.......2002-08-06

If you open with 1. e4, e5; 2. Nf3, you may not be prepared to play against 2... d6. Also, if you are like me you may conclude that your opponent is a wimp, a novice, or both. You may be in a for a shock, as in many variations of the Philidor, black comes out looking better than he does against a Ruy Lopez. This is because white players know how to get through the Ruy opening, but often have to figure out their way against the Philidor over the board. I find that this book is really essential, and is very well-done. In many ways, I recommend this book to all chess players, because there is something so basic to chess theory, and easy to understand, about the Philidor, that it pays to study it. Plus, you will find many great 19th century games to review which include this opening. Kosten does a great job making this work entertaining, alive, with his suggestions and recommendations. A fine job by Batsford. Good bibliography and index as well. All in all, a great book.

5 out of 5 stars Great book about a good defence.......1999-12-13

I'm playing the Philidor for a couple of years with the advices of Mr. Kosten in his remarkable book. I NEVER get out of the opening with a disadvantage! Philidor is in my opinion one of the most underestimated defences and it is very well covered in this book. Even against very strong opponents (GMs and IMs ) i got good positions out of the opening. I have a rating about 2100 and limited time to study. The Philidor is the perfect weapon for me, and it might be for you.

                          4 out of 5 stars The defender's solution to 1 e4.......1999-10-04

Many of us for years played the Philidor with the aid of few analytical materials beyond Bent Larsen's charming "Why Not the Philidor" and some discussion of the Hanham variation in the general openings books. Tony Kosten's Philidor book filled some important gaps, and certainly should not have fallen out of print. This is worth tracking down through the out of print service, for those who enjoy defending and closing positions down and don't enjoy learning Sicilian and Ruy variations. With this opening and a King's Gambit system, one essentially is ready for 1. e4. This opening is no longer as neglected as it once was, but still poses a fun weapon for ICC and swiss players, as most of our amateur opponents know only the few "easy kill" variations, and are not able to navigate the opening against the most basic variations set out in this book. Mr. Kosten's style is easy and clear--this book's a keeper.

How to Sell Your Business and Get the Best Price for It provides a road map of suggestions, insights, and techniques that will help owners and entrepreneurs achieve success in selling their businesses. 4 out of 5 stars Food for Thought.......2005-09-21

This book is a plethora of information: Determining when it's time to sell, the role of an intermediary in selling a business, preparing a business and its people for sale, and most importantly--determining what the business is worth. The book also covers offers, negotiations, the closing and Lessons Learned. If you are the least bit analytic, by all means, consult this. There's good food for thought before you make a move to sell.

5 out of 5 stars Great insights, expertise, and clear guidance for all.......2003-07-18

Whether you're well-versed or not in the how-to of selling a business, everyone should find value and great expertise in this book. The author presents facts and anecdotes to take you through the process in a way that keeps you interested and inspired. If you are looking to sell your business, I would think this book is an invaluable tool. But even if you're not -- if you're someone like me, who is interested in the subject but has little practical experience -- this was a refreshing and enlightening read. I highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Great Step-by-Step Description of How to Sell a Business.......2003-07-15

This extremely well written book was very helpful in providing me with a discussion of the step-by-step process of selling a business. I particularly liked the numerous stories of first-hand experiences that the author cites to reinforce his discription of the entire selling process.

It is very clear that the book was written by someone who has actually worked hand-in-glove with business owners in selling their companies. He certianly understands the problems owners face in the selling procress and how to best deal with them.

3 out of 5 stars Good writer, but no paragon.......2006-07-08

I bought this book (for full price, should have saved $7 ordering through Amazon) at the Malibu Getty museum, initially to read after tiring before my wife of art-admiring. I read it the following week, and here are my impressions.

The book is very readable, Getty is to-the-point and clear, he wanders a bit, no surprise for an 83-yr-old writer, but maintaining a good train of thought and addresses the topics one would want to hear. The pictures bring some personalities to life, and the large print helps the pages speed by.

Some sections are fascinating, for example, the ways he dedicated himself to business at the cost of his five marriages, his hi-jinks as a youth, conversations with top leaders, Hollywood people and pesky hangers-on as the richest man in the world.

Other sections can be tedious. He often argues that he is not a hermit, not miserly, and had great relations with his parents. Much of this comes across as protesting too much, in fact, I tried to find an unauthorized biography to contrast with his official version, as I suspect some facts don't align with his narrative, but have not yet succeeded. He also assumes a superior vision across the realm of art and humanity, which I do not value as highly as his views on business.

My top gripe is the apocalyptic view of the world falling apart, mainly because there are fewer capitalistic businessman and more leftists than were dominant during his youth. The topic only comes up sporatically, although I thought of tossing the book midstream when his peculiar point of view went astray to the point of assaulting the concept of welfare and advocating capital punishment. He went so far as to claim (p. 172) that the US might well, probably before now, have to flush the unemployed out of the inner cities onto plots of countryside land to fend for themselves.

Overall, however, the book was worth reading, both as an historical document and as an engaging personal history that took a very strong and astute personality to write.

I felt kind of lame after reading this book, Getty really lived a full life. Reading the book, you feel like you're having a conversation with him about his life and what's on his mind. He seems very down to earth.

This isn't necessarily a quick read business how-to book though you learn a lot by reading it. You get his life story that includes details on his family, friends, business associates, charity work and art. You also get interesting stories about the famous people he knew, eg his friend the Duke of Windsor that met with Hitler trying to avert WWII. Also there are chapters lovingly discussing his parents, children, and even his 5 ex-wives. He also defends his reputation for being cheap, eg payphone in his mansion. You really get inside his head by reading this book. My favorite chapter is his random thoughts chapter he wrote on Thanksgiving day, less than a year before he died 1976.

5 out of 5 stars The Life You Want Should Be the Life You Live.......2006-01-08

This is Getty's autobiography, written in the 1970's not long before he died. One of the founders of Apple Computer advised me to read this book years ago, and so I did. I've studied many books on finance and business, but this was the first time I had read an account of a billionaire's life (and as I would later discover, the world's richest man).

Getty wrote this book to give the public a glimpse into his very private life; seemingly knowing he was about to die, that he did not desire to die such a secretive/reclussive man. Inside this book, you'll read about how he developed a strong work ethic at a young age -- working hard-labor in the oil fields that he would later own; sneaking out his parents car in the middle of the night to take girls out on dates (hah!); accumulating wealth and looking out for employees; laying everything on the line for great opportunities; the tragedy of his grandson's kidnapping; and a very nice retort for all those people who called him a stingy old man -- that all of his wealth/money was invested in his business.

Oh yeah, and you read about how he hung out with Hugh Heffner back in the day. His original books were published by Playboy Press, including my copy of his autobiography (an original 70's hardcopy). :-) Yeah, Getty lived the life I would like to be living now -- 'cept for all the divorces; poor guy just couldn't keep a lady around and it's depressing to read sometimes. And in a way, reading this book gives me inspiration for staying on track, aiming your sights on what's important in life and not letting go. Getty had a fun life and he was handsomely rewarded for it. Since reading Getty, I've seen the same drive in all the other Billionaires whose autobiographies I've read -- Branson, Dell, Schultz. And also Ray Kroc (although technically I don't think his stock was yet worth $1B when he died).

You will love reading this account of Getty's life if your aim is to: have fun in life, be wealthy, learn from others, have a personal mentor from the grave, accomplish great things, and read autobiographies.

                          Getty, thanks for sharing =)

Good book out of print Amazon copy received was in near mint condition. 351 pages,30 pages of photographs. Not as mean as he was portrayed yet it is evident the author was a bit vain. he is obviously an interesting read. You learn "what makes him tick". If you are looking for a guide to riches this is not for you but if you are interested in learning about the richest man of his time then read this.

Between 1890 and 1920 the US Army underwent profound changes in organization, function, composition and appearance. The Army was transformed from a small, blue-clad force whose primary weapon was the single-shot rifle, into a mighty host of men dressed in dirt-coloured combat uniforms, using automatic weapons, tanks and aircraft to fight enemies on fields across the world. This book details the Army's developments during its involvement in the Spanish-American War, the Boxer Rebellion and World War I. Particular attention is given to the evolution of the Army's uniforms, which are illustrated vividly throughout the book.

4 out of 5 stars Another fine overview ! (007).......2006-05-23

I freely admit to not having much of a knowledge of the US Army, especially before and during WWI, and found this book immensly valuable. Philip Katcher and Gordon Rottman have done a great job for both the casual and dedicated reader of this field, and Jeffrey Burn and Ron Volstadt once again provide some excellent colour panels. The authors take you from the era of naval pre-eminence that existed in the US in the late 18th century, to the Spanish-American war and America's involvement in ground fighting in the Philippines. This revealed large shortcomings in most aspects of the current US Army, everything from weapons all the way to the lack of a general staff.

After the stalemate of the Mexican conflict petered out, America found herself in WWI, and the authors explore all the difficulties faced in Europe by the American army and Marine Corp, especially the reliance on non-American weapons, and General Pershing's persistent aim of retaining the AEF as a single American army under American command. This view was not a welcome one for the French. Ultimately we learn of the timely American contribution in response to the German Spring Offensive, which helped turn the tide in favour of the Allies, and the emergence of a battle tested and confidant American army. With ample photos and the before mentioned excellent colour plates accompanying the clear and very readable text, this is a great introductory volume on the subject.

                                A top read!

This book provides detailed descriptions of US Army uniforms and orders of battle up to 1919, but talks little about the weapons and actions in which the troops were involved.

The text doesn't mention anything about the US actions in Arcangel or Vladivostok, the Central-American interventions nor the small actions in North-Africa. Instead, there are brief notes about the campaigns in Mexico, Cuba and China. It is more focused in uniforms and military dress regulations than in historical facts. Art plates are not of the same quality and detail compared with other Osprey M-A-A books. It was not what I expected...

                                Book Description

More than a thousand individuals of high net worth rose up to protest the repeal of the estate tax-Newsweek tagged them the "billionaire backlash." The primary visionaries of that group, Bill Gates Sr. and Chuck Collins, argue here that individual wealth is a product not only of hard work and smart choices but of the society that provides the fertile soil for succes. Weaving personal narratives, history, and plenty of solid economic sense, Gates and Collins make a sound and compelling case for estate tax reform, not repeal.

                                4 out of 5 stars Very Informative.......2006-08-19

I had to read this book for a political science class I was taking over the summer, and I am glad the professor chose this book because I learned a lot about the estate/death tax. This book puts everything into prospective, and explains the pros and cons of the tax. If your interested on how the estate tax works and why we need it read this book.

5 out of 5 stars Original Indigenous Economy has truths to help us grow........2005-03-24

This review is excellent but I believe that those of us who live in Turtle Island will develop unified systematic responses only when we begin to honour the heritage of First Nations. The common wealth of First Nations was brought about through inclusive and comprehensive accounting practices, which valorized the contributions of all community members. This primary accounting including women's and social work took place in the Production Societies of each community. This accounting unified ownership for all members of the Production Societies. Wampum and other string currencies were issued across the 36 Confederacies of Turtle Island. People not only voted with their Wampum but spent it as currency as well. Ownership was progressive from the early status of an apprentice to the weighted Wampum 'share' holdings of the elder. What is missing in our capitalist and socialist worlds is their unity. Both systems hold part of the puzzle. Both developed as institutional fragments of a once integrated whole. The wonderful thing being that First Nations still hold many clues to understand this ancient system from aroung the world. You can imagine the difference between a whole culture of economic justice and merely a complaint department in a crooked department store. While Gates and Collins book is essential, it is through cultural indigenous economic design that we gain the involvement to make a difference. Western authors tend to keep us in critical analysis but still divided. Douglas Jack, eco-montreal@mcgill.ca (514) 695-3845

This extraordinary little book packs a gigantic punch. I'd love to summarize it here, but as soon as you buy the book, get straight to Chapter One. It's enough to make you sick in the stomach.

Is America a "democracy"? After Ch.1 you really wonder. A sample from p. 15: Around the turn of the century, shortly before WWI, the top 1 (one) per cent of the population owned 56.4% of the country's private wealth - at the same time, the authors tell us, "the wealthiest 10 [ten] per cent of households owned 90% of all wealth." Now, think about it: 90% of Americans together owned a mere 10% of the country! (And most of the country's wealth was in private hands, because the government at all levels owned very little of value. There wasn't even a national park in existence!) That's neither justice nor democracy.

American society started to improve since then, especially after the introduction of income tax. But things have again gone in the opposite direction in the last two decades, so that "the United States is now the most unequal society in the industrialized world." (p. 14)

This fact is borne out in the UN Human Development Report 2002. (I was surprised that this authoritative publication is NOT cited anywhere in this book.) This report gives the "Gini Index" for each country, among numerous other data. The Gini Index is not something out of Aladdin: It "measures inequality over the entire distribution of income or consumption. A value of 0 represents perfect equality, and a value of 100 perfect inequality." (p. 197) Ranked are these selected countries in the industrialized world: Denmark (24.7 - the least unequal society), Japan (24.8), other Scandinavian countries (including Finland) at around 26, then Germany (30.0), then English-speaking countries like my own Canada (31.5 - the lowest in this group), Australia (35.2 !!), the UK (36.8 - hardly news, what with their queen and lords), and finally the United States at 40.8. (France, the host of the French Revolution, is a surprising 32.7.) For comparison, developing China is 40.3 (beats the US by a hair - but not for long), India only 37.8 (I guess only a couple of people can be called rich there), and Russia is the most unequal of all at 48.7.....but then Russia is now run by a mafia of ruthless moneylords, much like America a century ago, when men like Rockefeller and Al Capone ran all the shows. (Still it is better than the gulag and secret police. And anything is better than communism.)

Getting rid of the estate tax won't help one bit. On the other hand, not repealing it in and of itself is just a small step in the right direction, hardly enough to stop the country from sliding down the slippery slope to a second Gilded Age. This book makes a very convincing argument why getting rid of the estate tax is truly a form of insanity the name of which is still not in the psychiatric textbooks. Bill Gates Sr.'s position is supported by his son (the world's richest man - mostly self-made). Warren Buffett, the world's second richest man (also self-made), disagrees with them only because he thinks the estate tax as it is does not go far enough. (He'd prefer to tax 100% of the super-rich's inheritance not given to charity.) This estate tax is absolutely, undoubtedly no "death tax" - as though everyone has to pay it, even the poor. Rather, it is really just "rich kids' tax"! Let's start calling the thing by its right name.

Andrew Carnegie is frequently quoted in this book, for good reasons. This mega-hero of the Gilded Age, who rose from abject poverty in a foreign country to become the richest man on earth, literally built America - with the steel from his furnaces, used in railroads and highrise buildings. He went even further than Buffett: "Any rich man [or woman, I assume] who doesn't give away his money to charity BEFORE he dies is a shame and a disgrace to society," as he said over and over. Carnegie certainly practised what he preached. (Before he died he gave away at least 95% of his worth, mostly to create free libraries for people too poor to have books.) Carnegie also believed in the estate tax: "Of all taxes this seems the wisest," in a memorable quote in this fine book.

At a time when many Americans worry about losing their jobs, when every citizen pays for the defense of the country, this is no time for the estate tax repeal - just so that the Forbes zillionaires own and control even more of the country while the rest have nothing or next to nothing. The supremely selfish, extremely greedy, totally irresponsible, unbelievably small-minded and short-sighted people who oppose the estate tax - and therefore dislike this book - hate and despise their fellow Americans more, and do more long term damage to America, than any Middle East terrorists because this kind of injustice (in Buffett's choice word) was what caused the downfall of Rome and is still yet another reason which encourages neo-Marxists everywhere.

This book is densely argued and extremely clearly presented. The 24 pages of sources in this slim little volume show the authors have done their homework, despite the omission I mentioned. Bill Gates Sr.'s authority is undeniable not only because he was already wealthy himself BEFORE his son became the world's richest human being (for at least the past ten years as far as I know), but also because he is himself a highly successful tax lawyer and in charge of one of the world's largest charitable foundations, the Gates Foundation. (One day it will be the world's largest.) If he doesn't know what he is talking about, I don't know who does. This book's Foreword is aptly written by the formidable Paul Volcker, former Fed Chairman.

I can't praise this book enough. It can go further though, as the public and private statements by Warren Buffett - a good friend of both Gates' - explain clearly why. Despite its admirable conciseness, this book can use a good general index at the end. (I want to be sure who said what when and why.)

5 out of 5 stars Must Reading for Every Member of Congress.......2003-04-06

Most controversial issues have two sides. The authors of this book present the arguments in favor of abolishing the estate tax in "the best light" by quoting at length and in context the abolition proponents' rationale. They then destroy these arguments by showing how and why they are based on false and often misleading "facts." They also make the case as to why an estate tax on those few accumulated fortunes which are, even under the pre-2001 law, subject to the tax is an important foundation stone of the American Experiment. I am not naive enough to believe that those who have made a career of opposing the estate tax will be swayed by the authors' book, but anyone with an open mind should be.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant. A must read for those who care about the USA........2003-02-15

This brief book strongly explains how society will benefit from keeping an estate tax on the wealthy. It explains how the estate tax allows America to be a meritocratic place where the best and brightest rise to the top and can make the most positive social change. It explains how charity giving will increase during wealthy individual's lifetimes if they know they face a big tax at the end. It gives a brief history of the estate tax and why it was introduced in the first place. It exposes the hypocrisy of Bush's estate tax repeal that expires in 2010. All in all, it provides a very concise argument why we must give back to the society which enabled us to have the potential to become wealthy in the first place. I never thought I'd be able to read through a book on tax law without putting it down. This book is brilliant.
