Book Description
Since the Weimar era, German cinema has played a leading role in the innovation of gay and lesbian cinema, with the tantalizing sexual illegibility and gender instability of German films of the 1920s anticipating the queer sensibilities of the 1990s.
From such cross-dressing Weimar comedies as Viktor und Victoria to the transgender fantasies of Ulrike Ottinger, Monika Treut, and Hans Scheirl, this filmic tradition explores the unconventional erotic, its directors inventing a visual language that goes beyond the trivialization and sensationalism of mainstream representations of gays and lesbians. This cinema crosses the boundaries between such classifications as male and female, gay and bisexual, normal and pathological, insisting that such transgressions cannot be entirely tamed, regulated, or closeted. Previous scholarship, reading this national cinema as sociopolitical commentary, has tended to ignore what falls outside a realist, hetero-normative paradigm. In this book, the author aims to rectify this neglect by rewriting German cinematic history queerly.
She reexamines the Nazi movie star Zarah Leander via her gay fandom, showing how this actress haunts the drag performance of femininity in the films of Rainer Werner Fassbinder. She argues not only for the persuasiveness of the gay underground in the New German Cinema but also for cinema’s pivotal role in German gay liberation. Other topics include the queering of nationality in the films of Monika Treut and Rosa von Praunheim, the fetishistic medium of experimental filmmaking in the works of Michael Brynntrup and Matthias Müller, and the androgynous appeal of “dyke noir animation.” In conclusion, The Queer German Cinema juxtaposes the voices of several German filmmakers as they reflect on their art in terms of a counter-politics.

Book Description
This unique, all-inclusive guide provides complete instructions for building a sophisticated yet low-cost microprocessor-controlled radio transceiver, as well as smaller projects such as simple frequency synthesizer and spectrum analyzer. Readers will get hands-on experience with interfacing digital and analog circuitry, fabricating circuit boards, anticipating the real-world behavior of RF circuits, and more includes circuit-board layouts, parts lists, and schematic diagrams.
Customer Reviews:
Disappointed in the lack of DSP.......2004-06-06
I was hoping for a discussion of a truly modern transceiver, with digital signal processing. It isn't. It's a computer-controlled analog transceiver. It doesn't even have a good quantitative discussion of the noise floor of the receiver, or any discussion, at all, of computer-controlled modulations.
The organization and writing isn't that good either. The ARRL yearbook has better projects, more clearly written, with better assembly instructions.
Hardest book I've ever read!.......2003-03-28
Well actually that was War and Peace, with The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich coming in a close second. But if those had building instructions...... Excellent read, I was warming up the soldering iron before I got out of chap. 1. Needs more info on FM bands and the upper microwaves for reception though!
A half decent book.......2001-10-09
A good book, but not for beginners. I purchased the Circuit Boards from FAR Circuits and went gang busters. Found numerous mistakes throught the book. Some components are also very hard to find. The RF power transistors alone cost 100.00 US. Had to debug main oscillators and SSB oscillators as well. My friend and I have also redesigned various components to add stability. Randy's web site is gone ? So the updates and corrections are no longer available. If you know what you are doing and have access to RF generators, Scopes and the like, then this may be for you. Otherwise for a first timer there are some other kits that will be much better. (VE3SLJ). Reach me through RAC, or the Call Sign Database for questions.
END
Very informative, but unorganized........1999-09-30
This book has a ton of very useful and informativeinformation. However, much of the details are incorrect. The wholepremise of this book is to be able to build the project transciver in the book. There are a ton of mistakes. Schematic diagrams are often riddled with incorrectly labeled parts and do not match the circuit board layouts. This book needed to be throughly checked for errors and the corrections made. In spite of these short commings, I enjoyed reading and I'm concidering building the project transciver. I recommend buying and reading, just go slow and careful before attempting building this rig.

Even if you fervently disagree with the party bias they tout proudly and often, you probably concur that Democratic political consultants Paul Begala and James Carville know what it takes to craft a winning strategy. In Buck Up, Suck Up... and Come Back When You Foul Up, the two lay out 12 of the rules they developed while separately and jointly masterminding some of the hottest political races in recent years. And with entertaining and enlightening behind-the-scenes anecdotes drawn from both effective and futile experiences along the campaign trail--most notably their work with Bill Clinton during his two presidential terms--Begala and Carville present a practical course that can be followed in business as well as politics. "If the audience you're trying to reach is smaller than the one hundred million voters we spend our time trying to reach," they write, "we believe these lessons are even more important because your target audience is even more sophisticated, even more interested, even more up-to-the-minute."
At first glance, some rules appear blatantly obvious ("Don't Quit," "Turn Weakness into Strength") and some intentionally controversial ("Kiss Ass," "Know How to Recover When You Really Screw Up"). But, in their explanations, the relevancy and potential application of each consistently comes through. For example, in "Frame the Debate," they note how Ronald Reagan controlled the agenda in his 1980 challenge to Jimmy Carter through early attacks on the incumbent's most unpopular policies--showing precisely why "military strategists know that most battles are won ... by the side that determines where, when and how an engagement is fought." Likewise, in "Know How to Communicate," they bring five tips (tell a story, be brief, be emotional, be unique, be relevant) to life by explaining how their use aided campaigns for Hillary Clinton, Tony Blair, and others. The result, while perhaps too profane for some and definitely not Republican-friendly despite its grudging acknowledgment of a few masterful GOP performances, is nonetheless uniformly readable and genuinely practical. --Howard Rothman
Book Description
The political strategists who directed the Clinton campaign's War Room reveal the lessons and secrets from their hard-fought battles -- and how to use these highly effective strategies for success in business and everyday life.
James Carville and Paul Begala have waged political war all across America and on three continents. They've won some of the most spectacular political victories of the twentieth century and lost a few campaigns too. Along the way, they've learned a few lessons. Some sound simple, like "Never Quit," some comic, like "Kiss Ass," and some are more complicated and nuanced, like "Strategy Ain't Tactics." But each lesson contains tried-and-true wisdom, illustrated with colorful stories from long political experience:
Find out how Carville's mother used a bass boat to "frame the debate" in
selling encyclopedias.
Learn the War Room tricks for sharpening your message and delivering the perfect sound bite.
Discover what success secret Hillary Rodham Clinton and Tom DeLay share.
And much more.
Whether you are a senior executive or a secretary, a political junkie or the president of the United States, the rules to live by can be found in Buck Up, Suck Up...and Come Back When You Foul Up.
Customer Reviews:
Left a bad impression .......2007-06-29
It has been quite some time since I read this book and my review may not be fair since I have lost respect for Carville due to his poor speech at the Speaker Series. Yet, my impression now is that the book was simplistic with few insights. Except for a reinforcement of common sense there is little need to read this book.
Marketing for Marvels and Mavens.......2006-11-04
This is a must read for anyone who fancies themselves as a marketer. Common sense-based practicalities prevail in this quick, sharp and witty read.
There is just too much mediocrity masquerading as best practices. Here are two masters of communication who cut to the quick and leave an indelible impression.
Like a great caramel, this is a sticky, rich experience.
Reviews by Nan Kilar and Bobby Miller.......2006-04-13
This is a book by authors who put reality before party. Still, I don't know who Carville thinks he's fooling when he describes George W. Bush as a buffoon; he knows better. Bush is playing a part that was scripted by some of the best scriptwriters in the business. And he's giving an academy award performance.
These two authors are right about one thing for sure. The Moral Majority elected and re-elected a man who epitomizes the word Christian. With the blood of thousands on his hands, the missaporation of billions of tax dollars and a tongue that has told one needless lie after another, George W. Bush arrogantly parades around apparently proud of the fact that he has become the second most hated man to live in the last two hundred years. He appears unconcerned about tossing away a unique opportunity to represent America at her best instead of at her very worse. I cannot hate Bush for pitying him.
"Three great forces rule the world: stupidity, fear and greed." --Albert Einstein
Yawn! More of the same dribble........2006-01-21
You'd think these guys would run out of ignorant statements and wildly inaacurate predictions. Not these two.
With a combined I.Q. equal to that of an orange dish rag, Begala and Carville offer nothing new, nothing interesting, and nothing compelling. Neither have for years.
If it were not for the accidental presidency of a piece of white trash named Willie Clinton, both of these guys would be flipping burgers.
I really liked this book, certain chapters especially........2006-01-19
My wife gave this to me for Christmas. I loved it! It's not perfect, but some of the chapters are gems: strategy vs. tactics, how to communicate, and frame the debate. Those chapters alone are worth the price of admission! They're not very precise or technical, but that's the beauty of this book. They've honed it down to the simplicty on the OTHER side of complexity. That takes genius. It also helps that my politics happen to line up nicely with theirs.

"Ye Gods, old man--don't do it!" you're bound to shriek on page 1 of this hilarious travelogue, on which the author lists the hazards that may befall him--vipers, cholera, crocs, ticks, tuberculosis, malaria, rabies, and 1,700 types of parasitic worms among them. After all, portly, over-the-hill London Times literary reviewer Redmond O'Hanlon hasn't done anything more aerobic than flip the pages of a book for decades; he wasn't even a Boy Scout. It's hardly reassuring that his colleague, poet James Fenton--who had the big idea to trek in Borneo--was a Boy Scout. He hated it, and besides, aged, balding Fenton, whom O'Hanlon describes as rather worm-like, sounds like he's a likely lunch for a swooping black eagle.
But on they trod--with the much-needed help of three Iban natives and an unseen, though oft-quoted river god--through jungle, across rivers whose height may rise seven feet overnight, and via native villages (where they often have late-night parties), with one goal in mind: seeing the fabled Borneo rhino. Fenton is nearly swept away in a whirlpool, they subsist on jungle-worm gruel, and ripping off sucking leeches is a near-daily occurrence, but cultural and natural insights and adventures abound in this rip-roaringly funny and deftly written travelogue that will have you chortling out loud. --Melissa Rossi
Book Description
The story of a 1983 journey to the center of Borneo, which no expedition had attempted since 1926. O'Hanlon, accompanied by friend and poet James Fenton and three native guides brings wit and humor to a dangerous journey.

publishing/printing madness.......2006-08-08
received above book; correct cover, but inside is another book by name of 'the glass key' by dashiell hammett. tried to contact you by various means, to no avail.original packaging long gone. how do i go about getting the book i ordered???
Would I or would I not travel with these two?.......2006-04-25
Yes and no. Yes, because these two old British stuffies set off on this journey just the way most "inexperienced" travelers would -- by the seat of their pants. No, because I think I would like a better idea of cuisine before I went.
This charming narrative of two British amatuer travelers inspires humor and awe. Of course they get into all sorts of problems and handle them with dry wit. But they also give stunning and lyrical descriptions of the people and the places they visited.
This was a living travel adventure without a tour-guide in sight.
Best of all, our intrepid souls showed respect and genuine affection for the native peoples they met. I didn't see any bigotry in this book -- except that which they found in themselves and discarded with ease.
Readers should be warned that many of the descriptions of the cultures they visited are very vivid and weak stomachs may not enjoy the unflintching pictures the story evokes.
Humorous Travelogue into Jungle of Borneo.......2006-03-27
This twenty-five year old tale of two Brits being transported by their faithful guides into the deepest jungle of Borneo is amusing and interesting.
Redmond O'Hanlon and the smoking (as in smoking) James Fenton (improbably) the Queen's Poet Laureate embark on a journey to discover the highest mountain of Borneo and hopefully the white Rhino, possibly an island dweller and certainly unseen in decades.
O'Hanlon takes a whimsical approach to this travelogue. The stars are his faithful tribal guides and the locals he meets as he journeys up river and away from modern life. Particularly enjoyable are the village stops where he and his crew are (usually) met with feasts, libations, dance and the occasional memory from the local chieftain's female relatives. The clash of cultures provides many funny moments without slipping into condescation.
Although there is a lot of discussion of birds and waxing about the various properties of rushes, finches, yellow-bellied-sap-suckers and the like, the book is informative and interesting with the occasional chuckle thrown in. Altogether an enjoyable arm chair trip.
All Around Great Reading.......2003-10-02
If a book has Redmond O'Hanlon's name on it, buy it. While reading this book, when I wasn't laughing out loud (and I never laugh out loud) I was enthralled with the subject matter. I hate to compare writers, but think Paul Theroux (but not mean), David Quammen and throw in a little Tim Cahill for good measure and you come close to Redmond O'Hanlon. I've read a quite a few travelogues and Redmond O'Hanlon represents the very best of the genre.
Off to see the lizard........2003-09-30
Long before Bill Bryson set out to take his walk in the woods, London Times' literary reviewer, Redmond O'Hanlon, and his friend, poet James Fenton, trekked deep into the heart of Borneo in search of a rare, albino rhinoceros, accompanied by three Iban natives, Dana, Leon, and Inghai. Romping through jungles, traveling by river, and doing the seven-step disco in late-night villages, the two aging academics tried their best to avoid 1,700 different species of parasitic worms, snakes, wild-boar ticks, leeches, amoebic and bacillary dysentery, yellow and blackwater and dengue fevers, malaria, cholera, typhoid, rabies, hepatitis, tuberculosis and crocodiles. O'Hanlon writes with a naturalist's eye for detail, noting the various birds, insects, trees and critters he encountered along the way. Equal parts travelogue and memoir, and with a generous measure of Monty Python-like humor, INTO THE HEART OF BORNEO relives O'Hanlon's 1983 quest into "the heart of twilight, the home of 'old mankind'" (p. 129). For me, life couldn't be much better, sitting in a Boulder coffeehouse, reading about O'Hanlon's adventures in Borneo.

Book Description
This book explores the role of the US Navy Hornet units in the northern Iraqi campaign. These units were the first Navy Reserve unit to be mobilized since the Korean War, and their attacks were launched from carriers off the coast of Turkey. The conflict for these squadrons was very different from the campaign fought in southern Iraq: they worked almost exclusively with clandestine Special Forces teams from the US Army, Marine Corps, Navy SEALs, British and Australian SAS and Kurdish guerrillas. First-hand accounts accompany the indispensable role these units had in the battle to liberate Iraq.
Customer Reviews:
Hornets over Iraq - The Saga Continues!.......2006-10-14
Tony Holmes scores another direct hit with this account of Navy Hornet drivers in combat over northern Iraq during Operation Iraqi Freedom.
The Hornet's air war over northern Iraq was totally different in nature than that waged by F/A-18 units committed in the south. These Hornet units supported Special Operations Forces and Kurdish units tasked with pinning down Iraq divisions heading south to aid their comrades. Close air support was the name of the game for the Hornet units deploying from carriers Harry Truman and Theodore Roosevelt.
As with part one of this set, Holmes' text benefits from the unparalled access he had to Hornet pilots who flew over Iraq. The book is chock full of combat stories that put you right in the cockpit.
The text is complemented by dozens of photos, most in color, and five pages of F/A-18 side-views by Chris Davey.
If you enjoy fast movers in action, you'll want to get this book - and the others in the series.

Rich in details.......2007-08-26
This is one of the very best World War Two aviation books I have read and glad to own. Very detailed covering entries by country of manufacture. The first third of the book contains the color plates with a normal size male pilot drawn to scale in every color plate for size comparison to the aircraft. What a neat idea! The rest of the book is the line drawings with all the technical specifications of the aircraft, again by country of manufacture. This book from 1977 is more detailed and better researched then some newer books claiming to be complete WW2 Combat Aircrat directories. This book is a must have for any WW2 aviation enthusiast, especially if you want in depth rich details and specifications of the aircraft in service during this period.

Product Description
Two 18 year old cousins flying as rear-seat radio-gunners in dive-bombers chase a Japanese kamikaze plane into restricted enemy airspace and trigger an event that radically alters the outcome of the war.
Book Description
In Search of Stability: Explorations in Historical Political Economy ponders the issue of how Western industrial societies overcame major challenges to political and economic stability in the twentieth century. Successive essays ask: what ideological messages did American influence transmit to Europe after World War I, then again after World War II? Did Nazis and Italian fascists share an economic ideology or impose a unique economic system in the interwar period and during World War II? How do their accomplishments stack up comparatively against those of the liberal democracies? After 1945, what was the relationship between concepts of productivity and class division? How have the major experiences of twentieth-century inflation arisen out of class and interest-group rivalry? Most generally, what has been the representation of interests in capitalist political economies?

Book Description
* The first book to examine the application of the Precautionary Principle -- the most important and controversial approach to biodiversity and natural resource management worldwide
* Comprehensive case studies from Australia, New Zealand, the USA, East and Central Africa, India, the Philippines, Vietnam, Argentina, Uruguay and Fiji, including marine environments and forests
* Written by top practitioners in association with the main international conservation organizations
Great uncertainty typically surrounds decisions and management actions in the conservation of biodiversity and natural resource management, and yet there are risks of serious and irreversible harm for both biodiversity and the humans that rely on it. The Precautionary Principle underlies all international conservation efforts and entails acting to avoid serious or irreversible environmental harm, despite lack of scientific certainty as to the likelihood, magnitude, or cause of harm.
This book, the first to examine the application of the Precautionary Principle to conservation, analyzes how it has been applied in the
management of biodiversity, including the impact on forests products and aquaculture, as well as wildlife and livelihoods. The book also examines how power, equity, and science intertwine in the Principle. Evidence is drawn from a vast range of countries and the book provides guidelines for applying the Precautionary Principle in all international contexts for the conservation and sustainable management of biodiversity and natural resources.
