Seeing the Miracles that Lie Beyond the Pain.......2006-09-01
We all know people who have survived seemingly insurmountable tragedy. We wonder at their strength, their ability to continue living through circumstances that would stop most of the rest of us dead in our tracks. For these types of individuals, one common denominator is frequently faith, which can often be an inspirational stepping stone for others.
Of Moose and Miracles (CMJ Publishers, May 2002, paperback, 175 pages) is the story of a family whose faith helped them through what is surely one of life's greatest heartbreaks: the death of a child, Kraig Frick. Written by Marion Lee, the story that unfolds before us is told in the voice of Karyl Frick, Kraig's mother. In Karyl's words, we meet her son, the youngest of seven children and learn of his fatal diagnosis.
Lee's book has the feel of a compelling religious novel, but its impact lies in the fact that this is a real story that happened to a real family. With compassionate empathy, she gives voice to a mother's love, pain and ultimate triumph over what surely is any parent's worst nightmare. The Frick family is a shining model for any family facing personal difficulties. Their ability to find the miracles present in Kraig's life and passing offer tremendous hope and encouragement.
Of Moose and Miracles is a quick read, but an incredible learning experience.
inspirational read.......2005-11-13
A story of triumph over sadness. We all face sadness in our lives and many times do not know how to deal with it. The story of the Frick family offers much hope when confronted with adversity. It has been said that we do not choose WHAT we go through but we do choose HOW we go through it. "Of Moose and Miracles" is a beautifully written book illustrating one family's choice that led to many miracles. A MUST READ!!
Of Moose and Miracles.......2002-11-02
This is one of the most amazing books I have ever read! I laughed and cried with the Frick family. Everyone, no matter your denomination or degree of faith, feels the true presence of God in their lives when they read this book. I can't wait to read it again!
Of Moose and Miracles.......2002-10-04
This story is one of sorrows, hopes, and many graces. It a testament to one family's faith as they face the loss of their youngest member. It is a beautiful story of a faith community growing ever larger coming together with prayers, faith and love.
It a story of many graces and miracles.
A child shall lead........2002-07-22
Life has a randomness that contains both good and bad elements, and the story of the Frick family embodies both. The bad for this family is the tragedy that befalls their youngest son Kraig, a vibrant independent child, who finds himself afflicted with an inoperable brain stem tumor. The good is the strong belief the family has in their faith and how this helps them deal with this unthinkable event.
The presence that Kraig has in his short life upon the people who come to know him is incredible. And, in his death, this presence is carried on through a Franciscan priest who gains courage and strength through Kraig to accomplish things beyond his own limits.
This is a story of courage, joy and adherence to belief that will stir readers' emotions, and help them deal with their own obstacles in life. Steeped in religion, the story is told in a very comfortable manner by author Marion Lee. She has a way with words that allows readers to believe they are sitting across from Karyl Frick as she tells the story of her son.
Lee brings to life the events surrounding this family in such a way that the reader lives along with the joys and sadness of this spectacular family.
Let us hope that we don't have to wait another twelve years to be show another story from this excellent author.

A refreshing new take on everything BOND..........2003-05-27
My pal (who's also a Bond fanatic) recommended I buy this book. And he was right on the money. Author DiLeo slices the thick Bond topic with a refreshingly different serrated knife. And doesn't apologize for his candid and sharp opinions regarding the series -- yet always manages to entertain and enlighten us with his abundant knowledge and love of BOND. Great book! Pick it up!
Interesting Reading for Bond Fans.......2003-03-08
Di Leo's book, THE SPY WHO THRILLED US, for me, made interesting reading. Sure, there were some debatable items, but anytime I pick-up a book, and an hour later, I'm still thumbing through it, it (the book) has passed my test. I thought that his opinions were not "heavy handed," and quite frankly, I agreed with most of them. And unlike the Bond "Encyclopedias," et. al. publications, this one wasn't so dry that it put me to sleep.
If you're new to the movie series, or just like them, this will be a welcome addition to your bookshelf. It also would make a terrific present.
awesome.......2003-01-29
I loved this book! Author DiLeo is obviously a Bond fanatic like me and his enthusiasm and love for 007 is evident in every word. The book features the top 5 moments in almost 50 different categories ranging from best villains to best gadgets to best stunts and everything else in between. I had a great time comparing my "top 5's" with the author's. This book must be on the shelf of any true Bond fan.
A book for fans to debate.......2003-01-29
It is basically a book of DiLeo's opinions but the beauty of the book is all the fun you can have with other Bond fans comparing your opinions with his. You might disagree or agree and the discussions go on from there. In some cases I couldn't believe his picks and in others I agreed totally. In any case another Bond fan and I had a great time going through the entire book.Try it you'll like it!
Terrible.......2003-01-21
This is a truly terrible very childish book. It reads like the worst fanzine (which is not to deride all fanzines, where many are much better written than this amateurish book). All opinions are very subjective with nothing put into any kind of context.

Book Description
Using iPods or portable CD players, millions of people take their music with them every day to modify their daily experiences. Encased in headphones, they listen to music for entertainment, but also use it, among other things, as a buffer between themselves and the world outside, and to manage their moods. What is it about music that makes it useful in different ways to so many people? Have people always used music in these ways, or only since the technology of the Walkman and then the mp3 player made music portable? In this wide-ranging exploration of how and why we use portable music, Andrew Williams sheds new light on the role music plays in our everyday lives. Portable Music and Its Functions will be of use to students and scholars of sociology and cultural studies as well as of musicology.
Book Description
Excellent reproduction of extremely rare catalog, originally distributed by important Grand Rapids, Michigan manufacturer of fine Mission-style furniture. Unusual pen-and-ink drawings depict 188 pieces, among them a large-arm rocker of bolted construction, fold-down tables and desks, bookcases with leaded glass doors, library and octagonal tables, chairs, settees, more. Captions detail woods, construction, measurements, finishes and prices.

Dover's mission furniture catalogs.......2000-04-15
While Charles Limbert is less well known than the Stickley brothers, some of his furniture was, to the European eye, even better. Sadly, the line drawings of the original catalog are extremely ugly (see nos 79 and 80 which are reproduced as photographs on the cover, you would scarcely recognise them!). I did use this to build a glazed bookcase (no 306), which must be some sort of a recommendation, for I haven't used any of the other catalogs yet. And the book is very cheap!

Insightful frameworks for an effective PSO .......2007-05-27
This book is absolutely the best! It provides frameworks to structure and implement an effective professional services organization (PSO) for an IT product vendor. A product company PSO matures over time through various phases characterized by the types of services it offers. This book is full of practical yet winning strategies and tactics to maneuver the high risk waters of professional services. There are clear directions on how to manage key levers that increase profitability but it also sets realistic expectations. Although the book provides the `recipe' for a sample $100 million professional services organization, it lists all the necessary `ingredients' to cook up a PSO of any size.
I liked the fact that it is written in a style that is free of any jargon. Authors are professionals who clearly understand the industry from inside. My least favorite part are the diagrams and illustrations which are at best adequate but could be better. Highly recommend this book!
Building professional services in a product-based company.......2005-01-10
This is the absolutely best book devoted to building pro services organization in a product-based company. While there are a lot of sources on managing stand-alone pro services firm (i.e. accounting, law), this book addresses the common pitfalls in moving into services for product-oriented companies.
The book is easy to read, well organized, and packed with sound practical advice you can start applying right away, whether you're in delivery, sales, or marketing -- you'll be going back to it often.
You will sleep with this book.......2004-08-17
This book absolutely is the best book I've ever ready regarding professional services. They describe a pragmatic approach from their experience at SGI services. This book will take you through planning an PS organization, development of various groups, reporting strucutures, templates for tools to help you.
It's focus in on a PS organization of a product company but you can take much away from this book if you are purely a services organization.
What I like the most is that it helps you do begin to address the various challenges where other books gloss over these topics and leave it to you.
Excellent pragmatic approach.......2004-01-23
This book as become my day-to-day bible to managing a professional service division within our product-oriented company. If you have your objectives and strategy clear, this book will help you getting organized with the tactics.
Required Reading.......2003-07-19
This book is "just what the doctor ordered" for anyone trying to develop a Professional Services(PS) organization that is aligned with other functional groups and the overall mission of a product company. It also should be required reading for any leader moving for the first time from a stand-alone PS company to head up a PS organization within a product company.
I found it to provide easy to read, practical guidance on what the components of the PS organization should be, what the mission and profitability drivers should be, key organizational interfaces and how it should be measured.
Also, this book was reviewed, chapter by chapter, by all PS leaders as well as other functional leaders within the company, to develop a "lessons learned" document as part of a services strategic planning process. Invaluable assistance!

Montessori: A Modern Approach
ASIN: 0452279895 |
Book Description
Maria Montessori is important background reading for parents considering Montessori education for their children, as well as for those training to become Montessori teachers. The first woman to win a degree as a Doctor of Medicine in Italy in 1896, Maria Montessori's mission to improve children's education began in the slums of Rome in 1907, and continued throughout her lifetime. Her insights into the minds of children led her to develop prepared environments and other tools and devices that have come to characterize Montessori education today. Her influence in other countries has been profound and many of her teaching methods have been adopted by educators generally. Part biography and part exposition of her ideas, this engaging book reveals through her letters and personal diaries Maria Montessori's humility and delight in the success of her educational experiments and is an ideal introduction to the principals and practices of the greatest educational pioneer of the 20th century.
The new introduction to Maria Montessori: Her Life and Work by Lee Havis, executive director of the International Montessori Society, discusses the changes that have taken place in Montessori education within recent years.
An updated appendix of Montessori periodicals, courses, societies, films, and teaching materials.
A revised bibliography of books by and about Maria Montessori.

A Montessori school trustee (and parent) says thumbs up!.......1996-06-25
This is the book that opened Montessori's theories and achievements to me in a way her own writing never managed to. The Standings are not unbiased, having worked with Dr. Montessori --- but they do an excellent job of weaving Montessori's life story with her teaching discoveries and methods.
If someone is interested in learning about the Montessori method, and can only read one book, this is the one.
There is another biography by Rita Kramer that looks good, but I haven't gotten to it yet. Good luck!

Book Description
The distinguished political philosopher James Tully addresses the demands for cultural recognition that constitute the major conflicts of today, such as nationalism and federalism, the claims of Aboriginal peoples, feminism, linguistic and ethnic minorities. Tully's survey of four hundred years of constitutional practice shows that neither modern nor postmodern constitutionalism can adjudicate such claims justly, and in Strange Multiplicity he instead develops a post-imperial philosophy of constitutionalism capable of bringing peace to the twenty-first century.
Customer Reviews:
Richly textured ... brilliant.......2001-12-21
One of the most compelling contributions to contemporary political philosophy to have emerged in the last few years. Anyone interested in the 'multinational' problem, or the burgeoning multiculturalism debate, will find this of particular interest. Tully tries neither to lead us to water, nor to compell us to drink. What he offers is a refreshing and poignant aperture through which we might assess some of the more burning issues of our day...
A tour de force.
Enter the conversations.......2001-11-16
Here's the crucial plot elements: I have a partiality for this book. Not a full reciprocity and symetry of understanding.
Is the author rephrasing the abhorent failure and fraudulent design that have failed to fit the mould, have been and continue to be disastrous ?
For a reader who promises a lot, tully's plume brings the little ways of reasoning that actually bring peace to the conflict. Please, rephrase what i read and see if you agree: Let's carry out this philosophical investigation.

Book Description
Resource management in the United States is undergoing a fundamental change. Traditional sustained-yield approaches that focus on commodity-production and human resource use are steadily giving way to ecological approaches, often referred to as ecosystem management, that have long-term ecological sustainability as their primary goal. To achieve that goal, ecosystem management emphasizes socially defined goals and objectives, integrated and holistic science, collaborative decision making, and adaptable institutions. Political considerations are an essential component of ecosystem management, yet its socio-political context has been largely ignored by those studying and writing on the subject.
The Politics of Ecosystem Management is the first book to focus entirely on the political challenges facing ecosystem management as it moves from theory to practice.
The authors examine:
- the history of natural resource management in the United States
- the theory behind ecosystem management
- potential inconsistencies and contradictions in the themes of ecosystem management
- political philosophies that undergird traditional resource management
- alternative political principles inherent in ecosystem management
- opportunities and barriers for achieving collaborative ecosystem management
The Politics of Ecosystem Management considers the sweeping and profound changes that will be required of the American governance system-its political philosophy, institutions, notions of citizenship, and politics, as well its resource management practices-if the shift to ecosystem management is to be realized. It is a lucid and accessible volume that represents a vital contribution to the literature for students, researchers, and professionals involved with any aspect of developing and implementing ecosystem-based approaches to resource management.
Customer Reviews:
Invaluable for those concerned about fish habitat.......2000-01-19
This book provides a functional, usable set of guidelines to consider when working on fisheries habitat and stream rehabilitation problems. Although it is oriented towards the American environmental processes - EPA etc, the background concepts and information should be required reading for everyone who is involved in both environmental monitoring and assessment, and those who are involved in trying to bring back stream habitat that has been lost.
Useful for a much broader audience than originally targetted. For instance Community Stewardship groups here in BC have found it most useful.
Informative, thorough, and interesting.......1999-02-27
A very informative, thorough, and interesting coverage of the topic. Very well written and an enjoyable read. I especially liked the presentation of the "chapters" as "premises."
Advocacy is one theme of this book, but I didn't find that objectionable. As a former professional in the regulatory field, I think it is important for people with opinions to express them!
This book is really a must-read for people working on any aspect of biological monitoring of aquatic systems.
Excellent strategy & advice; slightly one-dimensional.......1998-12-11
Karr & Chu provide compelling arguments for the inclusion of reasoned biomonitoring efforts in Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) of aquatic ecosystems. This is long-overdue. Their desire for biological relevance above and beyond statistical significance is also laudable, reminding me of a dear mentor's constant advice: "But what do the numbers *mean* biologically??" It is an extremely well documented book as well, providing ample resources for further scholarly investigation of related topics. I laud their eagerness to create biological relevance and move beyond standard statistical distributions by brute biological common sense. Their approach is clearly robust, time-effective, and biologically relevant - an excellent combination for real-world environmental management decisions! I do, however, find the authors' quite one-dimensional focus on the use of single "multimetric indices" to be limiting in the practice of aquatic EIA. (Multimetric indices are sums of individual indices, each measuring a different ecological factor.) I fear that the same mathematical machinations which make Karr & Chu's methods robust may also make them insensitive to subtle biological changes. They might contend that robust management considerations render subtle biological changes irrelevant; I would argue that subtle change over time can be at least as powerful as quantum, near-instantaneous changes. The author's methods are also constrained by the fact that the a significant effort is expended in calibration, which may be fine and justified for future studies, but may be of little help for projects currently "in-hand." In conclusion, I would definitely recommend this book as a required read in aquatic biomonitoring strategies, but I will continue to examine my data in more statistically conventional ways as well as through multimetric indices --- I'm not likely to throw out the entire old toolbox for the addition of one new tool, after all, and all the multimetric indices in the world won't do a jot of good without sound experimental design practices.
Thoughtful and inspiring yet a bit too one dimensional.......1998-12-03
Karr & Chu write to inspire improvement in biological assesment protocols; no doubut I agree with them on this goal. They also remind us all that the "proof of the pudding" is in the biological relevance of the statistical analyses which we undertake to perform this task. Again, no problem. I do have suspicions re: their rather singular fixation on univariate compression of data to the IBI format to the extent that any & all multivariate data treatments are avoided. I would strongly recommend this text as a starting point, but would equally strongly recommend that you *avoid* considering it a definitive Bible for these assessment processes. An apt ecologist who is conversant with contemporary techniques of biotic quantification should perhaps be able to come up with some more multivariate and flexible metrics in addition to those suggested in this text -- although their tables of "what works where" are very helpful starting guidlines for pragmatic issues of what variables to measure in the field. Excellent documentation if you want to go after the references found in the bibliography. Wonderfully aggresive attitude re: preserving our rivers & engaging style -- I read most of the book this afternoon just because it's so engaging, which is pretty high praise for a textbook. If you also happen to be involved with biomonitoring efforts, please drop me an email as I'm working remotely via the 'Net & wold love the comraderie & discussion -- Eric entfolks@mwci.net
