Book Description
The authors trace the development of one of the most well-known directors of the New German Cinema that flourished in the 1970s and early 1980s. Examining Wim Wenders’ career from his early film school productions through his mature works of the 1970s, this book also analyses the most recent works, as well as the themes and preoccupations that unite his oeuvre. As the authors note, Wenders’ works have been profoundly influenced by American films, especially the ‘road movie’ genre. His own work often features characters who are always on the move, in an attempt to capture a glimpse of their identity and place in the world. They also represent a generation of postwar Germans seeking to redeem themselves and the history of their country by turning to American popular culture, particularly its music and movies.

a treasure on Wenders.......2005-05-02
This is the only resource I've found that goes into great in-depth detail of the ideas and inspirations of Wenders. This includes films by other directors (John Ford for example,) their stories, their characters and how they inspired Wenders' stories.
Clarity and Insight.......1998-11-01
I am thoroughly enjoying this book for it's insightful look at a fascinating filmmaker. It not only gives a history of the artist, it goes through his major works to date giving clear-thinking and well-researched ideas for the reader to consider. I am particularly interested in the sections on Wings of Desire because it provides a viewpoint I haven't found in any other sources on this subject -- referring to the many Biblical and Biblical contrasts in the film. Overall, I would highly recommend the book to anyone who desires a more in depth analysis of his works and not simply a film review.

An excellent expression of the darkness hiding in all of us........1996-09-10
This book is an excellent suplement in the cyberpunk universe. It's descriptions of the Mythos are quite good although they do contradict Lovecraft in places, though none of these contradiction are very major.
The setting is a future earth where larg corporations have taken over and dark powers man can't hope to understand hide in the shadows. These powers will not be content to hide forever. They feed off the suffering of mankind in this dismal age. The major drawback of this world is that you really need GURPS CyberWorld (Which happens to be one of the best Worldbooks GURPS has ever done) to play it effectively. This is a departure from typical GURPS suplements in that it really isn't a stand alone worldbook. Overall though it is an excellent supplement and a must for anyone who loves Lovecraftian Horror and Cyberpunk.
Book Description
Comprehensive text with enough background material to refresh and reinforce earlier courses in corporate finance and enough advanced material to stimulate the most advanced learner. The predominant strengths of clarity, current coverage, and friendliness to learner and instructors continues in this new edition. Some of the areas where coverage has been expanded include corporate governance and reform, valuation, value based management, cash flow, and newly updated material on real options. The instructor's resources enable outstanding presentations and learning.

Cujo.......2007-02-11
I bought the recent 9th edition of this book, and on the contrary to the previous reviews, i have found the book very helpful (probably the authors made some big changes in this edition). It gave relevant and very good examples with mini real-life cases at the end of every chapter. One of the big advantages in this book is that it gives you answer keys at the end of the book so you can check your answers to end-of-chapter problems. Keep in mind that this is an advanced course textbook so it will assume you have previous "solid" knowledge of concepts like time value of money etc.
Terrible.......2006-10-26
Not worth the paper it was printed on and completely overpriced. If you are an MBA candidate you should save $145 to spend on other study guides.
Financial Book Review.......2006-03-17
I am an MBA student and had to use this book for my Advanced Finance class. It is the most usless book I have purchased for any MBA class. VERY hard to follow and it provides very complicated and unclear examples of how to solve problems or understand concepts. I also got the study guide which was more helpful than the book itself, but it also was horrible. I am not sure why professors choose this book. I used my other finance books and the Internet to help me get through the class, as this book was hard to read, not well organized and offered little help to answer questions that required financial calculations. You better be up on finance topics, statistics, and know all the little symbols because that's all the book provides you. It does little to help you apply real world solutions to "theoretical" problems.
Bad Finances.......2006-03-16
I am presently in a MBA program and have been forced to use this book for our intermediate financial decison class. I have found it to be of very little help and actually muddles things more than clarifying or explaining finances. I have bought 3 other financial books in order to understand the class, all of them better written and far cheaper. This book is terrible in its' semi-explanations of financial formulas. Trying to tie these formulas and examples into any sort of problem application is almost impossible. If you end up having to use this book for a class, you must be prepared to spend a lot more time and money in searching for books that will truly do the job right.
A tough way to learn advanced finance.......2005-02-28
I'm a finance undergrad and currently in an MBA program and had to use this book for my advanced topics in finance class. The book is a difficult read. Hard to mow your way through the subjects and come out feeling like you learned something. CD is only mildly helpful. I also purchased the study guide and it was just as poorly designed/organized/written as the book.
If you have to use the book for a class, plan on getting one of Aswath Damordaran's books to supplement it. Damordaran is just hands down a better teacher, author and makes finance fun again.

Book Description
The events which led to the execution of Anne Boleyn, Henry VIIIâs second queen, in 1536 have traditionally been explained by historians in terms of a factional conspiracy masterminded by Henryâs minister Thomas Cromwell. Retha Warnickeâs fascinating and controversial reinterpretation focuses instead on the sexual intrigues and family politics pervading the court, offering a new explanation of Anneâs fall. The picture which emerges - placing Anneâs life in the context of social and religious values, and superstitions about witches and the birth of deformed children - changes our perception of her role within the court, and suggests that her execution (occurring only four months after a miscarriage) was the tragic consequence of Henryâs profound concern about the continuation of the Tudor dynasty.

Speculative but intriguing.......2006-03-13
I read this book several years ago but returned to it to refresh my memory after being referred to it as a source for Philippa Gregory's The Last Boleyn Girl. While some of Wernicke's assertions are speculative and her writing is a bit dry (especially if you're used to some of the more novelistic writing in popular history these days), she makes a lot of good points, corrects some incorrect assumptions that have been repeated ad nauseam, and generally emphasizes how much we DON'T know.
While there is no definitive evidence for her theory that Anne miscarried a deformed fetus in 1536, it certainly has plausibility and explains a lot of the mystery surrounding Henry's rejection of her and her precipitous downfall. On the other hand, Wernicke makes a good argument that there is virtually NO evidence that George Boleyn's wife was a principal witness against him in the accusations that he had committed incest with his sister, yet as far as I can remember this has been repeated as undoubted fact in just about every book on Anne I have ever read, fiction or nonfiction.
As other reviewers have said, while this book is definitely worth reading, it should NOT be the first biography of Anne that someone newly interested in her or her period picks up.
Interest theory, good writing, good overview of the court.......2005-09-17
The story of Anne Boleyn, doomed second wife of Henry VIII and mother of Elizabeth I, is well known, but the author is interested less in repeating the biographical facts and more in investigating her unintentional role in dynastic Tudor politics. Was she the victim of a Cromwellian conspiracy? Or, as Warnicke suggests, more the victim of circumstances in her inability to produce a male heir? It's certain that Henry was profoundly insecure about his family's hold on the throne, and that Anne, daughter of the earl of Ormond, was closely related to the Howard dukes of Norfolk. The earl, in fact, created a network of family connections in pursuit of his own dynastic ambitions that helped to doom his daughter. A first-rate study of family politics, and you don't have to accept her own conspiratorial theories.
intriguing theories, minimal evidence, tepid writing.......2005-06-07
Warnicke has done an impressive job researching the evidence that survives, and-- until her theories really get rolling-- is quite scrupulous at admitting where there are gaps. (Many readers may be surprised that there are periods of months during Anne's brief time as queen where not much is known about her.) But eventually Warnicke fills the gaps with her own theories: that the male fetus Anne miscarried in 1536 was deformed, that this caused Henry to think of her as a witch or sorceress, and that the men accused of adultery with Anne were all libertines or guilty of the new crime of buggery. These theories are not borne out by the limited evidence Warnicke examines, but she becomes so convinced of them herself that she starts treating them as fact and interpreting a wide range of events in light of them. (She seems confident, for example, that the allegedly deformed fetus was on Henry's mind at many specific points.)
It's sad that Warnicke's theses weren't subjected to more rigorous scrutiny before publication; given that several chapters originated as conference talks or journal articles, it calls into question whether the academic world has anyone listening as well as talking. Certainly no lawyer or scientist would consider this book's main arguments to be substantiated. By losing sight of possible counterarguments, Warnicke's careful work can seem no better than if she'd never consulted the original sources at all.
The writing and editing compound the frustration. In addition to some tortured syntax throughout, Warnicke sometimes belabors less controversial points (she states over and over that there was no formal faction linking Anne with Cromwell, for example). But toughest from a reader's standpoint is her loss of perspective that, even though we know how it ends, there is still a story to be told here. Hence she can write that Anne went to her lying-in chamber two weeks before the birth of "Elizabeth, her only surviving child." While every reader knows that this would become Anne's only successful childbirth, no one could have realized that in 1533. Jamming in the later facts removes any sense of the life being lived at the time. Moments like this add up to an approach to Anne that seems strangely lifeless: I suspect any readers who react positively to this work are bringing their own enthusiasm for Anne, and their own sense of her personality, to the book-- they aren't picking it up from Warnicke.
One specific irony: Warnicke's theory that George Boleyn, Anne's brother, had homosexual leanings, has already informed a popular novel and miniseries, "The Other Boleyn Girl." So this theory is on its way to becoming accepted as fact by people who won't realize that it's not actually supported by surviving historical evidence.
A bit dry but isn't that the English way?.......2003-08-17
Rise and Fall is a bit dry. It's a workmanlike text book but I enjoyed it. If you're coming to this book expecting romance, high drama and emotion go find another book. The author treats Anne like a politician or a warrior. She shows what steps Anne took and offers a theory as to why she took them and finally, the author shows why Anne fell. You'll probably enjoy Lady in the Tower or The Concubine better but if you collect Anne Boleyn books this is a worthy one for your collection.
Rather Dry...But an excellent choice!.......2002-07-27
This book is extremely well researched and accurate,I consider it to be the best biography I have read of Anne Boleyn to date. Yet be warned...it could be looked at by many as rather a dry text-book like read, and would not capture the imagination (or frankly attention) of someone unfamiliar with Anne's life.As the title suggests this book covers politics, and rather seriously I might add.So if you are looking for the first time for a biography of Anne Boleyn make this your second choice.

Best World War 2 Memoir.......2006-02-26
General Lucian K. Truscott's memoirs are the only WWII comparable to US Grant's. General Truscott commanded the 3rd Infantry Division in Sicily and Italy. He also relieved General Lucas in command of the VI Corps at Anzio. He then led the VI Corps to Rome and the invasion of Southern France. He ended up commanding the 5th Army during the Po River Campaign in Italy.
General Truscott is the grandfather of the fiction writer Lucian Truscott IV. In my opinion the General was gifted with far more literary skills. General Truscott was portrayed in the movie "Patton" as the officer who was ordered to make an amphibious end run around the German lines in Sicily.
General Truscott was probably the best all around Army or Army Group commander in WWII. If you read the Papers of Dwight D. Eisenhower he will know that Truscott was wanted by Ike to lead an army in Overlord, but he couldn't be spared from Italy. He was almost as aggressive as Patton, but without episodes of poor judgement.
His memiors are honest, modest and without self serving. An example is when the 1st,3rd and 4th Ranger battalions were almost totally destroyed in an attack at Anzio, another general intimated that they better come up with an excuse for General George C. Marshal. General Truscott said, "The responsibility is entirely my own."

Design with Nature (Wiley Series in Sustainable Design)
ASIN: 1559635738 |
Book Description
Ian L. McHarg's landmark book Design with Nature changed the face of landscape architecture and planning by promoting the idea that the design of human settlements should be based on ecological principles. McHarg was one of the earliest and most influential proponents of the notion that an understanding of the processes that form landscapes should underlie design decisions.
In To Heal the Earth, McHarg has joined with Frederick Steiner, a noted scholar of landscape architecture and planning, to bring forth a valuable cache of his writings produced between the 1950s and the 1990s. McHarg and Steiner have each provided original material that links the writings together, and places them within the historical context of planning design work and within the larger field of ecological planning as practiced today.
The book moves from the theoretical-beginning with the 1962 essay "Man and Environment" which sets forth the themes of religion, science, and creativity that emerge and reappear throughout McHarg's work-to the practical, including discussions of methods and techniques for ecological planning as well as case studies. Other sections address the link between ecology and design, and the issue of ecological planning at a regional scale, covering topics such as education and training necessary to develop the field of ecological planning, how to organize and arrange biophysical information to reveal landscape patterns, the importance of incorporating social factors into ecological planning, and more.
To Heal the Earth provides a larger framework and a new perspective on McHarg's work that brings to light the growth and development of his key ideas over a forty year period. It is an important contribution to the literature, and will be essential reading for students and scholars of ecological planning, as well as for professional planners and landscape architects.
