Book Description
Many know about her husband, Robert E. Lee, and her great-grandmother, Martha Washington; many have visited the cemetery that now occupies her family estate. But few today know much about Mary Custis Lee herself. Chronically ill and often in excruciating pain, Mary raised seven children, faithfully witnessing to her husband for years before his conversion. She retained her dignity and faith throughout a fruitless, heartbreaking attempt to win compensation for the confiscation of her home and possessions. History is never more powerful than when it provides a role model for enduring hardship with sturdy and radiant faith. Mary Custis Lee is such an example.
Customer Reviews:
LOVED IT.......2007-05-16
THE BOOK WAS VERY WELL WRITTEN.MADE ME THINK I WAS LIVING IN THE TIME. I COULD NOT LAY THE BOOK DOWN,I EVEN GOT ON THE ARLINGTON SITE AND LOOKED AT SOME GREAT PICTURES OF ARLINGTON AS I WAS READING THE BOOK AND THIS MADE THE BOOK ALL THE MORE INTERESTING. GREAT AUTHOR.
What did he ever see in her?.......2006-11-05
I read this book in three days as it was very well written, but did not, in my opinion give a very favorable view of Mary Lee. It portrayed her as self-centered, and like her father, more obsessed with the Washington connection than with the Lee connection. It pictures him as madly in love with her, I just cannot figure out why? I think it is very telling that none of their daughters chose to marry. Already a huge fan of his, the book only reinforced my good opinion of him.
Facinating insight - well written.......2006-08-27
This books give the reader a facinating insight into a woman who is too often over looked in history. It is the story of a woman, who's family members were on the front lines of America's early history, and who was a loving and supportive wife to the famous Robert E. Lee. History is full of stories of his life, especially during the Civil War, but the reader of this book will find that his wife was courageous in her own right, and worthy of historical note.
After reading this wonderful book, I found two other books which were just and wonderful and insightful about the Lee Family. They were "Growing up in the 1850's", the jouranl of Agnes Lee, and "The Lee Girls".
Interesting and informative.......2006-04-18
I always find it interesting to read about famous people's lives, but especially about the people who have been behind the scenes so to speak and little is told about them. That is why I found this book so interesting. Robert E. Lee is well known as the civil war general who surrendered and the war ended, of course, but to read more about his wife and get an insight to his family life made it hard to put the book down. There are some basic history rehashed somewhat in this book, but over all I found the book very personable and engaging in letting me know something about this woman whom I had never really heard of before. It also will show readers that no matter how famous a person may be, all people have their troubles and sorrows- and a lot of how life turns out to affect you depends on your reaction to what has happened in one's life. If you enjoy anything about the Civil War, this book would be a definite must !
Wonderful biography of a remarkable woman.......2004-11-05
Mrs. Mary Custis Lee of all people seemed to symbolize the tragedy of the Lost Cause. Born to wealth and privilege, the daughter of George Washington's adopted son (and Martha's grandson), she could have married any young man, but instead chose soldier Robert Edward Lee. She was to follow him through war and peace, the births of seven children, a debilitating illness and the loss of her beloved home. Through all, she maintained grace and dignity and personified the gracious Southern lady. Highly recommend.

Customer Reviews:
Enjoy the story of Mary Custis Lee and her famous husband.......2004-11-30
This is an interesting biography of Mary Custis who lived in and inherited the estate that is now the site of Arlington Cemetery. She fell in love with and married Robert E. Lee, a distant cousin. The book follows their story as Robert earned his reputation in the American military and later became internationally famous as a great general in the Confederate Army. Mary suffered personal losses as a result of his decision to join the Confederate cause, including having to abandon forever her family's mansion.
Harnett Kane wrote many books about the Old South; this is the third one that I've read. It is suitable for high school students and adult readers alike. There's good information on the Lee family and of course on the American Civil War. I was impressed by Robert E. Lee's accomplishments before the Civil War, particularly his engineering achievements in St. Louis.
The true love story of a remarkable couple, this book reads like a novel while providing historical background and narrative.
Living with the Lee Family.......2001-04-02
Once you begin reading this book, you feel as if you are living with the Lee family. Harnett Kane as an uncanny ability to be able to make you part of history. The book is written from the perspective of before the War Between the States, during and after. What a wonderful way to get a true, historical perspective of life in the South, and the way it truly was in the Lee Family. I am a cousin of Robert E. Lee, so it was a wonderful experience to spend time with part of my family from the past!

Book Description
"I am looking through the bars of my hospital bed at the faces of my wife and my two children. I am forty-seven years old and I am dying. I have less than three months to live and will not see my children grown or my grandchildren born. I have cancer." Those words begin a journey through a labyrinth of experimental drug treatments, misdiagnoses, and seven operations. To keep their sanity through long month of hospital treatments, and unknown to one another, each of the authors began to write. This is their story. It is a book which takes the reader through the private thoughts and experiences of family members as each struggles to deal with the impending death. Unlike may books written in similar situations, this book reads like a suspense novel. Many situations are funny and provide insight into the human spirit's undying optimism. Surviving the Storm is a story of love and of strength in the face of death, all the while confronting the reader with their own personal ghosts and fears. It is, above all, a life line of hope in a sea of hopelessness.
Customer Reviews:
A MOVING GRIPPING STORY OF HUMAN STRUGGLE AGAINST ALL ODDS.......1999-03-29
I READ THIS BOOK FROM COVER TO COVER BARELY EVER PUTTING IT DOWN. IT IS ABOUT CANCER BUT IT COULD HAVE BEEN ABOUT ANY OTHER HUMAN STRUGGLE. IT IS ABOUT TWO PEOPLE, VERY MUCH IN LOVE, VERY BRAVE, AND VERY GIVING. NOT ONLY TO EACHOTHER BUT TO ALL OF THE OTHER MEMBERS OF THEIR FAMILY. THE STRUGGLE NOT ONLY WITH DISEASE BUT ALSO WITH TRYING TO PROTECT AND CARE FOR THEIR YOUNG FAMILY. TO SHELTER THEM AND AT THE SAME TIME TO INCLUDE THEM IN WHAT WAS HAPPENING WITHIN THE FAMILY. THERE ARE THE FINANCIAL REALITIES THAT ALL DISASTERS CREATE AND THERE IS ALWAYS THE STRUGGLE TO LOVE AND TO SURVIVE AS INDIVIDUALS AND AS A UNIT. THESE ARE PEOPLE TO ADMIRE AND TO GET TO KNOW. THEIR STRENGTH IS WORTH READING ABOUT AND KEEPING WITH US FOR FUTURE REFERENCE IF EVER NEEDED.
A realistic view of a families struggle with cancer.......1999-03-17
I found this book to be extremly moving and very well written. While reading this book I was able to experience the authors struggle with this deadly enemy that we all may face one day. I feel this account should be required reading for all families of cancer patients. It's also advised for all who enjoy a true love story. The best part was the happy ending.

The only business school guide that ranks M.B.A. programs

·recruiters’ top-ranked national, regional, and international M.B.A. programs
·the top schools for major industries
·an honor roll of schools by academic discipline
·detailed profiles of full-time programs
Each profile of the 76 top M.B.A. programs includes information on the school’s ranking, admissions process, test scores, the industries and companies most likely to hire the school’s graduates, and graduates’ expected first-year salaries. ·how to get hired, including the right skills, attitude, and work experience
·the debate over full-time vs. part-time degrees
·the booming executive M.B.A. market

Book Description
Waking Up American includes original work by women who are either American-born of at least one foreign-born parent or who immigrated to the United States during childhood. The writers explore what it means to feel caught between two worlds—neither wholly American nor wholly a part of another heritage.
Cultures represented include the Philippines, Germany, India, Mexico, China, Iran, Nicaragua, Japan, Russia, and Panama, among others, and are often juxtaposed with a bicultural reality, having been raised by parents who simultaneously embrace and question American values. Essays trace themes of rebellion and conformity, pride and uncertainty, sexuality and sense of self, and a heightened awareness of what it means to be "other."
These narratives examine the part cultural identity plays in creating strong, independent, hyphenated American women whose experiences are part of what makes the United States the intriguing cultural amalgamation that so many diverse peoples are proud to call home.

While this is a great topic, the content is very uneven. The stories range from well-thought out and well expressed to superficial dash-offs.

Book Description
This interesting and insightful book examines the life of one of America's least favored presidents with a sensitive and objective eye. Herbert Hoover's career followed a pattern familiar in the history of the United States: humble beginnings surmounted by hard work and tremendous ambition, wealth, public service and, eventually, the presidency. From his Quaker youth he acquired morals and values that he would preserve throughout his entire life. These values ultimately created an unbridgeable gulf between him and U.S. citizens as he confronted the Great Depression soon after taking office. There would always be little comprehension between the president and the people who looked to him for leadership. He died unpopular and isolated, disowned by his own party, embittered by the lack of understanding, and convinced that the burden of blame for the depression had been thrust on him unfairly. This volume seeks to shed light not only on the man and his career, but also on the evolving nation that rejected him.
Customer Reviews:
Disappointing.......2003-09-25
I'm reading a bio of each President and was actually excited to get to Hoover. I figured he couldn't be nearly as bad as his reputation and there might be some insight as to how he was so successful in most of his life, but failed so miserably as president. Alas, there is not. The book seems well-researched, but there is a stunning lack of personal detail. Almost nothing other than Hoover's offical writings are cited. No anecdotes from friends. No personal correspondance. Before he went into government, he spent most of his adult life overseas. Surely there would be some interesting tales from those adventures, I thought. None. If you have to do research on Hoover, I suppose this is a fine place to start. However, if you're a bio fan and looking for some insight into the man and the times, don't bother. To be fair, such a book may not exist or even be feasible with Hoover. This one definitely isn't it.
