5 out of 5 stars Here's To Inspiration!.......2006-08-11

Hello. I recently sent this book to a friend who was preparing to go into surgery to remove cancer from his colon. Needless to say he was very apprehensive about the procedure and actually felt like his time on this earth had come to its natural end.

Last night, I got the great news that the surgery went well and my friend is resting comfortably. His brother told me this book helped tremendously and gave my friend the hope and inspiration he needed as he prepared for this dreadful cancer removal procedure.

There's nothing like direct, positive feedback. God bless my friend and here's too many more years of good living!

Book Description

From the best-selling author of Kitchen Confidential comes this true, thrilling tale of pursuit through the kitchens of New York City at the turn of the century.

By the late nineteenth century, it seemed that New York City had put an end to the outbreaks of typhoid fever that had so frequently decimated the city's population. That is until 1904, when the disease broke out in a household in Oyster Bay, Long Island. Authorities suspected the family cook, Mary Mallon, of being a carrier. But before she could be tested, the woman, soon to be known as Typhoid Mary, had disappeared. Over the course of the next three years, Mary worked at several residences, spreading her pestilence as she went. In 1907, she was traced to a home on Park Avenue, and taken into custody. Institutionalized at Riverside Hospital for three years, she was released only when she promised never to work as a cook again. She promptly disappeared.

For the next five years Mary worked in homes and institutions in and around New York, often under assumed names. In February 1915, a devastating outbreak of typhoid at the Sloane Hospital for Women was traced to her. She was finally apprehended and reinstitutionalized at Riverside Hospital, where she would remain for the rest of her life.

Typhoid Mary is the story of her infamous life. Anthony Bourdain reveals the seedier side of the early 1900s, and writes with his renowned panache about life in the kitchen, uncovering the horrifying conditions that allowed the deadly spread of typhoid over a decade. Typhoid Mary is a true feast for history lovers and Bourdain lovers alike.

5 out of 5 stars ANTHONY BOURDAIN DELIVERS.......2007-08-11

Anthony Bourdain provides a good, solid story, written in his fluid, irreverent prose. Too bad he says he'll not revisit this genre (non-fiction, historical), because he makes history fun to read. He puts Typhoid Mary in an historical and culinary context, as only he can do.

3 out of 5 stars Entertaining, But Lightweight.......2006-12-04

An entertaining urban historical of the infamous Typhoid Mary Mallon - the Irish cook with pestilence coursing through her ... um... bum. This one is a bit different because it's written by a chef who looks at Mary's life from the perspective of what it must have been like for a hard-working immigrant cook at the turn of the century, and he throws in a lot of details regarding the lack of cleanliness of the time which makes it a bit more understandable why Mary didn't tend to wash her hands after relieving herself, and thus prevent the spread of Typhoid Fever. Bourdain is decidedly sympathetic of Mary, when it's pretty obvious that Mary had a whole lot to do with bringing her misfortune upon herself... which makes you wonder: if Bourdain were offered some of Mary's trademark peach ice cream, would he have eaten it?

4 out of 5 stars Love Bourdain!.......2006-07-13

I really like Anthony Bourdain's writing style. It's conversational and unpretentious. This is a great book if you don't know the story of Typhoid Mary; however, if you are already familiar with it and are looking for something in depth with lots of details, this might not be perfect.

I'm looking forward to reading more from Bourdain.

5 out of 5 stars The Best History Books are NOT Written by Historians.......2005-03-10

It just goes to show what someone with some desire to learn and a talent for writing can do. Tony Bourdain proves it yet again with his interesting and well-researched look at Typhoid Mary. Who knew she was a cook? I bet most people think she was a prostitute (I did). Bravo to Tony for having the ingenuity and the humility to do some top notch historical research here and produce a useful work of historical scholarship.

4 out of 5 stars Tasty morsel.......2005-01-30

This slender volume is a lot like the sumptuous meals that were popular among the wealthy turn-of-the-last-century New Yorkers: it's rich and overstuffed. "Typhoid Mary: An Urban Historical" by Anthony Bourdain is loaded with references to that milieu's passion for all things fancy, especially food, and how one woman, without intent or malice, sent a panic throughout it.

Mr. Boudain, a very successful chef in his own right, is the perfect chronicler of this saga. His sympathy/empathy for Mary (Typhoid Mary) Mallon is evident throughout the text. (His final gesture of burying a gift at her grave was very moving.) He understands Mary's territorial sprayings in the kitchen, and how she felt that no one had the right to prevent her from working in it. And although he feels for her, he is not callous to the havoc and tragedy she created.

There is also a little bit of a detective story here. And I enjoyed the juxtaposition of the first time Mary was tracked down and the last time. The limited range of the book is the only drawback. I felt as though I had read something that was part of a larger work. In gustatory terms, I felt I had eaten a tasty main course with some side dishes, but was denied the appetizer and dessert. Again, Mr. Bourdain's final farewell to Mary at the gravesite was moving, but sort of abruptly ended the story. But I'm nitpicking. "Typhoid Mary: An Urban Historical" is a wonderful diversion.

The book has decent coverage of duplicate strategies and conventions like weak twos, but nothing earth-shattering. There are two different editions - ACOL and Standard American, so make sure you get the right one.

"The Five Keys to Value Investing is practical, insightful, and a great roadmap to not only value investing but how to make money in the stock market." — Joel Greenblatt, Managing Partner, Gotham Capital

"Jean-Jacques has written a great how-to guide for both beginning and experienced value investors. He skillfully draws on the canon and legacy of the great value investors, such as Graham and Buffett…a terrific addition on this time-tested methodology." — Eric T. McKissack, Vice Chairman, Ariel Capital Management/Ariel Mutual Funds

Investors left to pick up the pieces of the shattered stock market are rediscovering value investing the time-tested technique based on assessing and buying businesses as opposed to "picking" hot stocks. The Five Keys to Value Investing provides a methodical framework for using value analysis to uncover investment opportunities based on their business strengths, and building a solid portfolio of stocks that is destined to provide superior long-term returns.

Written by a professional value investor who worked for the best, The Five Keys to Value Investing explains how to answer the four basic questions of value investing:

. Dennis Jean-Jacques, who made his name as an investment analyst working with legendary value investor Michael Price, presents in the form of a clear framework a time-proven value investing strategy for identifying well-run companies, then investing only in those that are undervalued. Find out here how today's best value investors: Obtain insights and information from a company's financial statement Buy strong, growing companies at a significant discount to their true values Identify and capitalize on events destined to spur stock price appreciation Accomplished value investors pay little attention to the ebb and flow of the stock market; instead, they concentrate on the intrinsic worth of a company. The Five Key Steps to Value Investing introduces you to the tenets of value investing. It then provides you with the hands-on tools and long-term confidence you need to construct a portfolio of solid, low-maintenance, and high-value stocks--each bought at a substantial discount to their true worth.

              Customer Reviews:

              5 out of 5 stars Strong buy.......2007-01-18

This is a wonderful book on the principles of value investing. The author does a fantastic job putting together (in a very understandable way) some of the most important tenets that every value investor should uphold. The book starts with "The Mind of the Value Investor" - which I believe to be the book's most important chapter. Here, Mr. Jean-Jacques describes what many successful practitioners believe to be the most critical attribute to becoming a good investor... and that is emotional intelligence. After examining the book a great detail (my copy is dog-eared, highlighted and well marked up), I would consider the following sections to be most important:

              -- All of Chapter 1
-- Business Quality Red Flags (in Chapter 2)
-- Assessing Value: Tools to Consider (in Chapter 3)
              -- All of Chapter 4
-- Identifying the Opportunity (in Chapter 6)
              -- Appendices A, C and E

What I did not like about the book was the length. While it what not as lengthy as some books of this type might be, "The Five Keys to Value Investing" should have been much more concise in the breadth of topics and concepts covered. Also, the examples were good but were too many in number while using analytical concepts that might be a bit too philosophical for non-professional value investors, like me. However, on a lighter point, the analogy between the game of golf and value investing in Chapter 6 was very insightful and much appreciated (it was the only light moment in the entire book!!)

Look, this book is an absolute buy. No question about that. Readers just have to be a bit skilled in order the get the most out of this very informative and thorough work.

1 out of 5 stars Vague Formulas, Poorly Written, Not for Beginners.......2006-08-09

I am trying to be an amateur investor and this book didn't help. I was hoping for clear formulas for valuing companies, assessing risk vs. reward etc. The most valuable part of the book is when the author describes his own transaction as a manager, but he makes huge leaps over how he reaches his conclusions. I guess I needed someone to say "take this and add it to that", etc., and this book didn't.

5 out of 5 stars A good addition to your library.......2006-08-03

Interesting concepts and applicable... This book provides an interesting way to look at stocks. The author focuses on what makes the companies "tick" and outlines a few points to consider when considering buying shares of public companies. The five-point approach makes a lot of sense and can be a good foundation for an investment program. I am not sure however, if this book is for non-professionals. The author goes into detail with good examples, but he seems to forget his reader (the average, Joe... like me!). This book is a great addition to any serious investment library but I think one should read a few "beginner" books before picking this one up. This is clearly a value investing book for the experienced.

3 out of 5 stars Tedious and boring read, great principles.......2006-07-18

              Here are the five keys:
              1. Is this a good business run by smart people?(How has management performed in the past?)
              2. What is this company worth? (How does the actual book value of the company comapare to the market value of the outstanding shares?)
              3. How attractive is the price for this company, and what should I pay for it?(Are you getting a great price for the stock based on the value of the company, earnings per share,52 week stock price, etc.?)
              4. How realistic is the most effective catalyst?(Will something happen in the next year to cause the stock price to move to real value?)
              5. What is my margin of safety at my purchase price?( Are you getting a low enogh price that it can not drop much farther based on intrinsic company value?)

If you understand how to analize these keys save your money on this book, if not it can show you how.

This book also has great appendixes:
              Business assesment tools
              Analyzing wall street analysts recommendations
              The critical failing of EBITDA
Managements plan to restructure a company
              Descriptions of SEC forms.

It was a boring, clinical read, but had great keys hidden in it.

4 out of 5 stars Lots of useful detail.......2005-03-31

Mr. Jean-Jacques bares the nitty gritty details of where and how to look for information to value the companies, determining which techniques are applicable when, and arriving at a valuation range based on triangulation from multiple relevant frameworks. IMHO, he spends a bit too much time philosophizing -perhaps, this consistent mental framework is useful to value investors starting out afresh.

"I am a storyteller by training and inclination," writes the late Stephen Ambrose in To America, his final book. And what a storyteller. One of the most respected and popular historians of his era, Ambrose had a passion for making the events of the past both relevant and entertaining. In these pages, he touches on many of the subjects that he devoted his career to, including presidents Eisenhower and Nixon, the journey of Lewis and Clark, the building of the transcontinental railroad, and the citizen soldiers of World War II. He also writes about his own personal story and his role as a historian. In detailing a family camping trip to Wounded Knee (an outing which directly led to his dual biography of Crazy Horse and George Armstrong Custer) or offering tips on vivid historical writing (keep your narration in chronological order; keep the reader guessing; and never use the passive voice), he shares what it is like to reflect upon the triumphs and mistakes of the past and why it is so important to pass those stories on to the next generation.

In this brief yet satisfying book, Ambrose moves seamlessly from one topic to the next with contagious enthusiasm and unapologetic optimism. Along the way he points out the inherent absurdity of political correctness, and even takes himself to task for past biases and for sometimes failing to consider his subjects within the context of their own times and not his own. He does not shy away from writing about America's sins, both past and present, but Ambrose's undying faith in his country and his fellow citizens is inspiring. --Shawn Carkonen

                Book Description

Completed shortly before Ambrose's untimely death, To America is a very personal look at our nation's history through the eyes of one of the twentieth century's most influential historians.

Ambrose roams the country's history, praising the men and women who made it exceptional. He considers Jefferson and Washington, who were progressive thinkers (while living a contradiction as slaveholders), and celebrates Lincoln and Roosevelt. He recounts Andrew Jackson's stunning defeat of a superior British force in the battle of New Orleans with a

ragtag army in the War of 1812. He brings to life Lewis and Clark's grueling journey across the wilderness and the building of the railroad that joined the nation coast to coast. Taking swings at political correctness, as well as his own early biases, Ambrose grapples with the country's historic sins of racism; its ill treatment of Native Americans; and its tragic errors such as the war in Vietnam, which he ardently opposed. He contrasts the modern presidencies of Eisenhower, Kennedy, Nixon, and Johnson. He considers women's and civil rights, immigration, philanthropy, and nation building. Most powerfully, in this final volume, Ambrose offers an accolade to the historian's mighty calling.

In To America, Stephen E. Ambrose, one of the country's most influential historians, reflects on his long career as an American historian and explains what an historian's job is all about. He celebrates America's spirit, which has carried us so far. He confronts its failures and struggles. As always in his much acclaimed work, Ambrose brings alive the men and women, famous and not, who have peopled our history and made the United States a model for the world. Taking a few swings at today's political correctness, as well as his own early biases, Ambrose grapples with the country's historic sins of racism, its neglect and ill treatment of Native Americans, and its tragic errors (such as the war in Vietnam, which he ardently opposed on campus, where he was a professor). He reflects on some of the country's early founders who were progressive thinkers while living a contradiction as slaveholders, great men such as Washington and Jefferson. He contemplates the genius of Andrew Jackson's defeat of a vastly superior British force with a ragtag army in the War of 1812. He describes the grueling journey that Lewis and Clark made to open up the country, and the building of the railroad that joined it and produced great riches for a few barons. Ambrose explains the misunderstood presidency of Ulysses S. Grant, records the country's assumption of world power under the leadership of Theodore Roosevelt, and extols its heroic victory of World War II. He writes about women's rights and civil rights and immigration, founding museums, and nation-building. He contrasts the presidencies of Dwight Eisenhower, John F. Kennedy, Richard Nixon, and Lyndon B. Johnson. Throughout, Ambrose celebrates the unflappable American spirit. To America is an instant classic for all those interested in history, patriotism, and the love of writing.

5 out of 5 stars A debt to those who went before.......2007-08-27

I have loved many of Ambrose's books, but this one really brought home to me the debt we have to those who went before. He's not afraid to say someone is not absolutely perfect (i.e. Jefferson) or absolutely evil (i.e. Nixon). But what he does show is that the American way, with a sense of right and wrong, has prevailed up to the end of the 20th Century, and by implication, that sense of right and wrong need to be there for us to continue into the 21st Century.

Thank you, Mr. Ambrose, for this goodbye card to America.

5 out of 5 stars A great last book by a great historian.......2007-07-08

This is my favorite book by this author, which is saying a lot since I have enjoyed almost everything he has ever written. This particular book was written a couple years prior to when it died and it gives his honest reflections about America's history. I absolutely love this book. It's not a long read and it's so interesting since Stephen E. Ambrose was such a great historian. His reflections are honest and I agree with a lot of what he says. A great book.

4 out of 5 stars The last book of a great historian........2007-06-13

It is a shame Ambrose died of cancer. I looked forward to his yearly books in the nineties. Although his last book was clearly a very readable book, it is not his best. It is summary history of what he learned throughout his life. He states his dislike for Nixon, but also states that what he did in holding the country together demonstrated his abilities. His admittance of some of his mistakes shows a truly great historian and gentleman.

If you have read his other books, this is basically a rehash of all his other books. Since I have read many of his books, I did not learn much, but it was a pleasure to read his summary history. This was a quick read on a well liked and great author and historian.

4 out of 5 stars good book of contrasting ideas on American history.......2007-04-11

Very good book of brief compilations by a premier historian. What I liked most about many of his brief writings was that Ambrose introduced many contrary, often undiscussed sides of various historical events in history. For those of you interested in reading in depth on many US historic topics, this is a good book to see the flip side of many of the "biased" teachings others may discuss on a topic. What mean by biased is the current school of thought on a subject. Many historians write of America's conquests of the continent as taking away and exploiting the native indians. Ambrose introduces another side through his dealings directly with many native Americans namely that the indains in which the land was taken from, had at one time taken that land from others. Another topics is many of present day hold our founding fathers in contempt of being slave holders. Amborse discusses that this was the norm of the time and some of the founding fathers did trouble over this issue. He continues to say in light of this issue, there were many great things these men did that should never be cast in a shadow. Many of his brief writings in this book will be kept in the back of mind as I continue to explore US history and contrast mainstream train of thought as I read further. Ambrose is also a great story teller often bring that personal touch to each subject which greatly helps the reader relate.

5 out of 5 stars After reading this book, you'll wish Ambrose had been your history teacher!.......2006-08-18

Heard the taped version of TO AMERICA: PERSONAL
REFLECTIONS OF AN HISTORIAN, the late Stephen Ambrose's
                last book.

It got me thinking that it's too bad that I never had him as
my history teacher . . . I enjoyed his enthusiasm for the
subject, as well as his optimism for this country.

He covers a lot of territory in this relatively short book, but
there was just enough on each topic (including several presidents,
the journey of Lewis and Clark, the building of the transcontinental
railroad, and the soldiers of World War II) to want me to continue
                learning more--always a good sign.

In addition, I perhaps most enjoyed his story on how he became
interested in the profession . . . and what he has learned from being a
historian, as well as the mistakes he has made along the way.

I also liked his tips on how to vivid historical writing that could
well be applied to other types as well . . specifically: keep your
narration in chronological order, keep the reader guessing and
                never use the passive voice.

Lastly, he made me realize that President Grant was a lot more
than just a great war hero, and that if weren't for President Truman,
World War II wouldn't have ended as quickly as it did . . . as "I tell
my students, thank God for Harry Truman for his courage and
                decisiveness."

                    Book Description

This collection of essays is a compendium of Herman Hattaway's writings from throughout his more-than-forty-year career. Hattaway is a captivating historian who always seeks to engage others in the study of history. He has made many important scholarly contributions to our understanding of the Civil War, including new information on the military use of balloons, the relevance of religion in warfare, and the nature of good (and bad) military leadership. This book will appeal to the many historians and others who have been influenced by Hattaway over the years. It demonstrates how he has evolved as a historian and brings to light many essays that were never before published or published only in obscure journals.

"All of Hattaway's work . . . is characterized by great scholarship with a kind of charming quirkiness."-George Rable

With Stephen E. Ambroses untimely death in October of 2002, America lost its most popular historian. He breathed fresh life into topics that remained obscure to the average person, and injected passion into the events from which history textbooks so often drained the drama. Ambroses final book is a stirring collection of reflections that covers such wide-ranging subjects as the Battle of New Orleans, the transcontinental railroad, Crazy Horse and Custer, sexism and racism, the authors personal ruminations on what it means to be an historian, and so much more. Throughout the book, Ambrose is candid while assessing himself, legendary historical figures, and the entire nation. Discussing the Vietnam War, the author recalls, I was a dove, not very active in the antiwar movement but very much an outspoken critic. Concerning Thomas Jefferson, Ambrose says, His writing showed that he had a great mind and a limited character. About Americans he believes, Weve made the world a better place and we will continue to do so. While occasionally a critical examination of American policy, past and present, this book remains primarily a celebration of the indomitable spirit that makes the United States a great nation. It is a deeply admired mans final gift to the country he so dearly loved.

The original edition of Kant: Political Writings was first published in 1970, and has long been established as the principal English-language edition of this important body of writing. In this new, expanded edition two important texts illustrating Kant's view of history are included for the first time, his reviews of Herder's Ideas on the Philosophy of the History of Mankind and Conjectures on the Beginning of Human History, as well as the essay What is Orientation in Thinking?. In addition to a general introduction assessing Kant's political thought in terms of his fundamental principles of politics, this edition also contains such useful student aids as notes on the texts, a comprehensive bibliogaphy and a new postscript, looking at some of the principal issues in Kantian scholarship that have arisen since the first edition.

This is the best affordable paperback collection of Kant's essays on politics and the philosophy of history. You get Perpetual Peace, Idea for a Universal History, Contest of the Faculties, The End of all Things, Theory and Practice, What is Enlightenment and several other essays. Hans Reiss' introduction is well written and illuminating as well. There is another, cheaper collection published by Hackett Publishing Co. (Perpetual Peace and Other Essays). However, it is smaller and less comprehensive than this edition.

This is a fairly extensive set of excerpts from Kant's "moral and political writings" including his views on war (possibly Providence's way to improve humanity as a whole, despite Kant's antipathy to it), freedom & its relationship to politics & business, relationships between pure reason & empiricism, the nature of causation vs. empiricism, the price of dignity, universal laws ~ Jung's archetypes, reciprocal causation ~ Jung's synchronicity, etc. There are many quotable phrases such as:
pp. 11-12: Men whose heads touch the heavens while their feet rest upon the lowly earth.
pp. 21-2: True wisdom is the companion of simplicity. [Occam's Razor]
                                        p. 132: Enlightenment is man's leaving his self-caused immaturity.

He also addresses knowledge & ideas: p. 40: In fact, this may pass as an infallible prophecy for all future time. Since, the human mind has speculated for so many centuries on countless subjects in so many ways, it is likely that for every new idea an old one can be found having some affinity with it.

science: p. 263: Scientific knowledge, critically explored & systematically introduces is the narrow gateway which leads to wisdom.

and morality: p. 465: Act in such a way that you could want your maxim to become a general law.

Friedrich describes his treatment of the original texts in footnotes. However, the text includes numerous Latin phrases (mostly not included in my phrasebooks) which are not translated herein. Further, writing in the 2nd half of the 18th century, some of Kant's examples, assumptions, & value judgments are dated. His style is somewhat convoluted & difficult (possibly due to German translated into English); one of the excerpts is something of a Christian apologetic; others are utopian & IMHO naïve. Overall, it demonstrates the brilliance of Kant as an original thinker--a man ahead of his time, & possibly of ours too.

                                          Book Description

Admired for its majesty and often feared for its strength, speed, and supposed aggressiveness, the grizzly bear was once unchallenged as the great apex predator of the American West. But by the 1970s, hunting and habitat loss had reduced its numbers in the lower 48 states to a mere 800 animals occupying just two percent of the bear's former range. Where the Grizzly Walks assesses the bear's current status and its uncertain future at the beginning of the 21st century. Focusing on the wildlife professionals who struggle to achieve a balance among the varied interests of government agencies, private landowners, politicians, and environmentalists, the author illuminates the enormous challenges in making sensible public policy for the management of a high-profile, threatened species--and one of the last great symbols of the American wilderness.

If you are interested in learning about what is going on in the area of grizzly management and habitat preservation, then this is a book for you. It is educational and mind opening to the plight of this great bear. The authors talks with all types of people involved with grizzles from environmentalist, researchers, ranchers and loggers. It kept me drawn in till the end and then I was sad there was not more. I read it in a day and think it is one of the best books in my large bear book collection.

5 out of 5 stars With diverse ways to save the majestic great bear.......2004-03-05

Where The Grizzly Walks: The Future Of The Great Bear by Bill Schneider is a straightforward presentation of the grizzly bear species and the tremendous negative impact humanity has had on it. In the 1970s, the lower 48 states had a scant 1000 grizzly bears living in just 2 percent of their former range. Today the grizzly populations strain the limited carrying capacity of their wilderness home compelling them to expand their activities into nontraditional habitats. Diverse ways to save the majestic great bear from the ruthless throttle of civilization are the prime focus of this involving and strongly recommended study.
