Is a complete waste of time. It reads (and looks) like a bad copy of the National Enquirer, but in a better cover.

Amusing Handbook to Desert Dish.......2006-02-22
Expensive for a softcover book with only B&W stock photos, but still a fun resource guide for Desert afficianadoes. Not-too-dishy gossip about some of the celebs and celeb wannabe's who have had residency in Palm Springs, California...both past and present.
Author Johns obviously had some fun researching and writing this prosaic "Map to the Stars Homes" manual. Especially fun if you are a frequent visitor to the area or are planning a vacation there.
DULL, TRIVIAL AND SOPHOMORIC.......2005-11-22
Based on other reviews, PALM SPRINGS CONFIDENTIAL seems like great dish along the lines of Kitty Kelley, with well-researched chapters about sex and scandal in Palm Springs.
What Johns has produced, however, is more like a star map on steriods. Each chapter takes you house-by-house through a different old Palm Springs neighborhood, which could be interesting in the right hands. Johns does not have the right hands.
The result is a choppy, schizophrenic mess of mostly trivial detail. There's nothing here that you can't find in other, better-written books on Palm Springs. Johns's bitchy barbs combined with his sophomoric prose and unnecessary commentary on stars's films, music, and addictions make slogging through this slop a real chore. I find it hard to believe that Johns could be the editor-at-large of a grocery list much less PALM SPRINGS LIFE magazine.
Even more shocking is Johns's dark, homophobic tone when discussing gay celebritites, especially considering that the gay community practically runs Palm Springs. He carelessly tosses about phrases like "limp-writsed," "debauched," and "effeminate," completely oblivious to how offensive he is to anyone with a compassionate nature.
Johns's nasty tone -- whether discussing gay people or not, his amateurish style, and his inability to weed out superfluous detail make PALM SPRINGS CONFIDENTIAL an enormous waste of time and money. There are much better books on Palm Springs out there. Don't make the mistake of buying this one.
Great Palm Springs Movie Star Memorabilia!.......2005-09-06
Loved the book and it's many pictures and movie star history. Having grown up in Palm Springs, I found it especially interesting to read about the more glamorous side of a familiar town. Great book--well worth the money!
Shocking.......2004-11-11
Howard Johns book is a great eye opener. Before reading it I had never so much as heard of Palm Springs, and now I feel like I live there. He tells you which famous people live in which house all the way down all the roads in Palm Springs, so that if you want to, you could write to them and ask them for their autographs. In a way they're vulnerable now, having their addresses published in this book but i suppose when you move to a town like Palm Springs, with its reputation for scandal and overt sexuality, you don't really care about things like that. While some residents oof the town, past and present, were religious people, often a lot of them are not religious by any means, and there are any number of free-thinkers living there. It's a beautiful city with a stunning climate, and the real estate can be pretty pricey. People who love hearing the stories of other people's bargains will enjoy Johns' account of how Charles Farrell and Ralph Bellamy bought the whole Racquet Club and dozens of surrounding acres for the equivalent of a few beaded necklaces.
Some will object to Johns' continual prurience, and I was a bit taken aback when he referred to Marilyn Monroe going down on Johnny Hyde, but then again, if you pick up a book called PALM SPRINGS CONFIDENTIAL, you're just as implicated as he is, so get over it already. There isn't much of a narrative line either, just a visit to all the different houses and him telling you what old time stars and present day porn stars live in each one, but the dirt you'll hear will make the hair stand up on the back of your neck. It is like having someone with a wonderfully dirty mind stand behind you and whisper sexy suggestions into your ear.

This large well produced book is a great photo reference book on one of the great modern quarterbacks in the game of football. The photos in the book are crisp and vivid (many worth framing). Truly a must have for any serious Brett Favre fan. Would make an excellent addition to any comprehensive personal football library.

A sports biography book, in color, of the Green Bay Packers star quarterback, Brett Favre. He leads the team to victory in the 1997 Super Bowl. Very good book for students and teachers in grades 3-6.

This is the one book every fan of Nelson Eddy and Jeanette MacDonald must have. Unfortunately most of Nelson and Jeanette's films aren't on DVD and they can be very difficult to find. With this book you can learn about every single one of the movies they made together and separately. Each film is covered in great detail from the plot to the songs to the behind-the-scenes stories. The photos in this book are stunning - many are full page and many I had never seen before. I don't think anyone who loves America's Singing Sweethearts will be disappointed with this book :-)
OK reference.......2003-11-24
This book contains a lot of factual errors about the films, and it is not particularly insightful about anything in particular. Its biographical and pictorial coverage is more complete on Jeanette's behalf than Nelson's. Then again, Jeanette did have the longer film career and a fortuitous association with the celebrated Lubitsch. All in all, for the price, it's a respectable buy. I bought it in hardcover for the pictures (some are beautiful, some seem strange choices).

My job brings me in contact with many F1000 executives who have responsibility for CSR/citizenship/responsibility/sustainability/etc and I read this book to broaden my view of the topic. I found it to be interesting in its format, content and point of view. I highly recommend it if sustainability is taking on a strategic importance to your business and you need to hold your own when discussing the finer points of it all with senior management and boards. Or, you are a senior manager and need to reach decisions about the role of sustainability in your planning. Read this book. You won't regret the investment of time or money.

This is the first book I read on the topic of sustainability and I found it to be very approachable. The concepts were easy to grasp and it was written/formatted to be part example, part theory. I'd recommend it wholeheartedly.
Great resource for corporate insiders.......2005-08-30
I've been looking for quite awhile for a book that provides support for introducing sustainability thinking into business planning in a way that might appeal to CEOs. I didn't find one until I found this new book by Bob Willard. (Note: Hunter Lovins provides a foreword).
Bob Willard claims this book fills a unique niche, and as far as I know he's right. And it's an important niche for readers who are trying to build a business case for sustainability.
The book is an easy read, which shouldn't be confused with a simplistic treatment of complex information. Willard organizes a lot of material drawn from a wide range of sources into a coherent and well-argued whole. He also includes a lot of well selected quotations around the topic.
His bibliography at the end of the book is also very good.

Reed, however, goes too far in trying to establish McClellan as the author of joint strategy for the war. Apart from the general conclusions, quite a useful tool for researchers and students of military history.

Rowena Reed's book stands first in a field of one as an analysis of (Union) combined Navy-Army operations in the Civil War. She may go too far in praising the strategic vision of McClellan, but her discussion of the strategy and tactics of combined operations is first-rate.
Definitive study; incisive; dramatic; accurate........1998-06-06
Not only is this the definitive study of combined ops in the CW, it is the definitive study of George McClellan, the grand strategist of 1861/62 and the only general in the war who maximized naval cooperation. Her insights are brilliant and her premature death is much to be regretted.

If you thought the big bad world was too big and too bad, "Unarmed Bodyguards" shows at least one way to fight back.
Numerous countries throughout the world regularly submit their citizens to arbitrary arrest, torture and execution in the name of anti-insurgency. A few of these, highly dependent on western aid, are particularly sensitive to the way they are perceived by the outside world. This sensitivity provides the possibility of preventing state violence simply by threatening to witness it and make it known internationally.
"Unarmed Bodyguards" gives a history of the newly emerging tactic of unarmed accompaniment, the practice of maintaining constant watch over threatened individuals. The authors detail the experiences of a number of organizations, in particular Peace Brigades International (PBI) and Witness for Peace, during projects in Guatemala, Colombia, Sri Lanka, El Salvador and Haiti. The collective experiences gained demonstrate the power of this technique as well as the potential pitfalls.
Personally, I loved this book. I found it inspirational. The research is methodical and rigorous, including particularly revealing interviews with key political and military figures in the events described. The analysis of the mechanisms of the technique is fascinating, clearly showing that the benefits are real and multifaceted.
If you are interested in learning more about the continuing struggle to fight state terror, you will enjoy "Unarmed Bodyguards".
