          Book Description

I No Longer Dance reveals an athlete's devastating physical and emotional struggle of enduring a painful and crippling disease.

The author, Alice Randall Cocca, suffered from degenerative disc disease, D. D. D., for almost 10 years before her untimely death. D. D. D. robbed her of the passion, "the absolute fire and zest", she once had for living.

Her poetry lays bare the incessant pain and ravaging emotional loss that changed her life drastically. This is her story. Her voice speaks to us on paper. As we turn the pages, we, too, "feel the pain, the severity of her tears, the agony of her walk; the pain that never went away."

          "So here I am
          Crying
          Dying in pain
          My body
          My soul
          BLEEDS
          Hear my spine cry"

            Book Description

Are Jim Carrey, Robin Williams, and Eddie Murphy the celluloid compatriots of Ronald Reagan, Margaret Thatcher and Tony Blair? This book argues that the rubber faces of '80s and '90s comedy films, helped to transform us into the flexible, self-managing citizens beloved of the new right--and its successors. Through its sustained look at the box-office comedies of the last two decades, Comic Politics provides a critical introduction to key approaches to comedy. It tests the usefulness and limits of psychoanalytics, Bakhtinian and postmodernist theory against comedians and comedies from Woody Allen to Wayne's World. The book includes a look at animation and computer enhanced comedies.

                    5 out of 5 stars Good Book.......2007-04-08

I'm an intermediate level options trader. I bought this book for the trade adjustments, and it definitely delivers. I was weak on how or what trade adjustments to make. Reading this book has definitely changed the way I trade. I now have multiple strategies for locking in profits, and repairing loosing positions.

This book isn't for beginners, it's really for intermediate level options traders. I think everyone will learn something from the trade adjustments in this book. Definitely worth the money and time to read it.

5 out of 5 stars solid options review.......2007-02-16

An excellent coverage of the strategy of option trades including a solid presentation of the fundamental trades. Particular presentations on what to do with a trade that is going bad is most helpful. You will find yourself making detailed sketches the risk reward plots on the side to fully understand the details of such positions as a bear call spread. It gives a depth of understanding that enables you to trade independently.

5 out of 5 stars Learn it from the masters of options.......2006-03-08

Dr Jabbour is a master in this field. I had the pleasure of listening to some of his presentations in different seminars. This book sums it all. I encourage all who are interested to advance their knowledge in both, the theory and practice of options trading, to read this book.

3 out of 5 stars The same idea repeated many times.......2005-07-15

I was quite dissapoined when I read this book. My high expectations of it didn't materialize. I cannot recommend this book to anyone who is serious about option trading since it does not discuss greeks and how you can balance your portfolio with them. If you spend time and research components of option pricing and greeks this book becomes just a common sense repeated a hundred times.

4 out of 5 stars Good book to learn but not to make money.......2004-09-20

Is there a difference between learning and making money? As a professional trader my main goal now is to find practical ideas that make money. During my first year of trading , my goal was to learn as much as I can about the business of trading regardless of how profitable the information is. As I gained experience I started weeding out concepts and techniques that are not profitable.
My experience in trading has proven to me that simple concepts applied effectively work best especially in options. In this book most concepts while understandable are elaborate option strategies with frequent position restructuring to adapt to the market. While it is always good to adapt, frequent changes cost you commissions and reduce potential profits.
In addition success in option trading highly depends on the traders ability to assess the short term movement of the underlying stock using appropriate technical indicators. It would have been of great help if technical indicators used in assessing stock movements were combined with option strategies .
AS an example. let us say you are interested in selling a covered call on your stock. The most important peice of information is not how much premium you will make if the stock moves down by a certain amount by expiration and what position changes you will need to make if the stock goes up or against you. What you really need to know is whether the stock is about to reverse down, if that is the case you sell the call and plan to buy it back when the stock falls to a certain support level as indicated by your Stock technical trading system. If not then selling the covered call is a bad idea no matter what the P/L chart says.
If you are an academic type person, a professor, college student or someone who wants to learn , this is a great book and that is why I gave it 4 stars. If on the other hand your goal is actually to make money , you need to look to other books. One I found useful is"generate thousands on your stocks without selling them" by Elias.where the concepts are less academic and more geared to making money.

                    Book Description

In Fifty Acres and a Poodle, Jeanne Marie Laskas described how she survived her first hilariously tumultuous year at Sweetwater Farm. Now she returns with a funny, touching, and personal new memoir of what happens after your dream comes true...

With a picture-postcard farm, a wonderful marriage, two mules, and a new refrigerator that spits crushed ice, what more can a girl ask for? That’s precisely the question Jeanne Marie asks herself as she and Alex settle into their new life at Sweetwater Farm. Two years ago they left the city behind for a life filled with the practical, often comical, lessons of living close to the land—and they never looked back. Yet when her strong-willed mom is hospitalized with a sudden and mysterious paralysis, Jeanne Marie rushes home to Philadelphia and her extended, sometimes chaotic, but always loving family. It’s there that she realizes what is still missing from her life: a family of her own. Now it’s a matter of bringing up the subject to her husband, Alex, fifteen years older and with adult children of his own, who seems terrified that she’s thinking of adopting a Chihuahua.

With warmth, wisdom, and unfailing humor, Laskas tells the poignant story of her search for motherhood—and what happens when a woman risks happily-ever-after for something even more precious. As she tends to her own ailing mother, Jeanne Marie discovers that the challenges and rewards of living with Mother Nature pale in comparison to those awakened by the nature of mothering.

The Exact Same Moon is filled with hilarious and heartwarming vignettes of people and a way of life you’ll be glad you met. From "borrowing" sheep to help mow the lawn and sitting in on the racy hay jokes at the Agway Equine Clinic, to befriending the notorious old lady who holds the water rights to their future pond, corrupting the neighbors with satellite TV, and learning the fine art of going a-calling, Laskas proves once again that laughter, love, and wisdom are truly homegrown.

5 out of 5 stars Read this aloud with someone you love.......2006-11-10

I read this book aloud with my husband. It was like reading a letter from a friend, sometimes laugh-out-loud funny and others wipe-a-tear sad. Although it's the story of moving from city to country life, it has relevance for anyone transitioning from one lifestyle to another. The situations are believable and the characters are funny and endearing. It's the kind of story that you know you'll miss when you reach the end. My husband has asked several times that I get the second book in what we hope will be a series by Ms. Laskas, so we can read aloud again.

4 out of 5 stars a less aggressive, but still enjoyable, second book.......2006-05-02

"The Exact Same Moon" is the sequel to "Fifty Acres and a Poodle" (however, you can enjoy it without having read its predecessor). In the first book, Jeanne Marie Laskas recounted her journey from single life in the city to married life on a farm. In this follow-up, she describes her mother's illness and her own realization that she longs for a child.

This book is not as good as "Fifty Acres and a Poodle". It lacks that book's purity of voice and breadth of consideration. It is a quieter, gentler story; it is clearly written by an older and mellower woman, one who questions everything in her life out of curiousity rather than confusion, and that makes this book less poignant than the other.

Still, "The Exact Same Moon" is more than worth the read. It's a lovely tale, well-structured although true, filled with amusing character sketches and interesting little thoughts. It's a pleasant book throughout, intelligent and well-written and occasionally illuminating. Anyone who enjoyed "Fifty Acres and a Poodle" should read it; anyone who hasn't read "Fifty Acres and a Poodle" should read them both.

5 out of 5 stars A gentle and touching read.......2006-02-02

This is the kind of book that makes you feel so good, you want to press it on your friends. The writing is gentle and thoughtfully paced, and she writes about the kinds of everyday experiences and feelings we can all relate to.

The first book is Fifty Acres and a Poodle, which I'd recommend reading first. In this second book, the author is surprised by her unexpected but profound desire for a child to love and to share her world with. Her adoption of a little girl from China is written about with tenderness and deeply felt joy.

I can't wait for the next installment.

5 out of 5 stars Entertaining and touching.......2005-08-18

I always enjoy Ms. Laskas' columns and looked forward to this book. I was not disappointed. Humorous but realistically touching as she deals with issues another mother certainly understands!

4 out of 5 stars Quaint and homey!.......2005-08-08

This follow up book was cute, but a tad slow at times. The author talks about her life on the farm, like your chatting with an old friend. You think (and wish) you were there as well! I do recommend reading it and certainly hope the author comes out with another book!

I read this book several years ago. This is the best book on the rise of ansar/dervish in the Sudan. Rudolph Slatin was an officer in the Austro-Hungarian army that went to serve (ala mercenary capacity) in the Egyptian army. He served in the Sudan at the initial stages of the Mahdi's uprising. Witnessed the slaughter of the Rizighat tribe and was at the 1885 fall of Khartoum. He saw the inside of the Mahdi's terrorist state. His experiences are very telling in light of recent Islamo-fascist activities.

5 out of 5 stars Very exciting and entertaining. Couldn't put down........1998-03-31

Captive for many years by the savage Mahdi fanatics, Slatin lived through the false conversion to Islam and surrendered his defeated Egyptian military forces to the Mahdi's just prior to the slaughter of Gordon at Khartoom on the Nile. Escaping after years of brutal treatment, the story of Slatin's escaping the death arm of his captors is thrilling.

4 out of 5 stars Real Life vs Conan.......2002-03-06

As a comparison with Conan, Slatin's book comes out very well. It provides a colourful (Australian spelling) picture of life and adventure in 19th century Sudan. Slatin comes across as a courageous and honorable servant of the Khedive. He wins some remarkable victories. No doubt the concern he displays at the opposition getting their hands on modern weapons explains part of his success.
Unlike Conan, who seems to leap on every woman within sight or hearing, poor Slatin is continually plagued by the excess baggages that the Khalifa foists on him. Apparently, the sole really flourishing industry in the Sudan was the slave trade, and Khalifa Adullahi naturally had the largest harem. When the time came to clean out the surplus, he would bestow the excess on his (presumably) grateful offsiders. Slatin's description of the Abyssinian mother-in-law and other relatives who descend on him, scenting a new meal ticket, is well worth reading.
The main weakness is in the miscellaneous remarks. Obviously since the Khalifa didn't lop off Slatin's head, he wasn't quite as bad as these somewhat contradictory comments make him out to be. The general attitudes and even some of the arguments remind one of a 'more foreign aid/send in the peacekeepers' advocate. Of course, he wrote the book when an officer of Egyptian intelligence, with an obvious propaganda purpose in mind. Still, since the Khalifa's rule reminds one of a mixture of a religious cult, a totalitarian state and Osama Bin Laden, I wouldn't entirely discount what Slatin says.
Regardless of the above, for fans of Conan, I can recommend this as an exciting and entertaining story

The fascinating account if this Austrian Colonel who went to the Sudan in 1878 to serve with General Charles Gordon. He was appointed Governor of the province of Darfur and recounts many battles of his Egyptian Army forces against the dervishes under the Mahdi, incl the defeat of Hicks Pasha and his army at El Obied, his own defence and eventual surrender of Darfur. Captured by the Mahdi, he was to eventually serve him in a campaign in Abyssinia, and eventually escaped in 1895 after years of captivity. Ziauddin Sardar—author of more than 40 books on science, religion, and culture—is one of Britain's foremost Muslim intellectuals. Desperately Seeing Paradise is his frank, funny, impassioned account of life as a restless believer.

very thought provoking book. Mr. Sardar takes you on a long religious, political and spiritual journey which starts in the 60's and continues to current times. This world and Islam could be in a much better shape if we had more thinkers like him. loved the book.

                                  3 out of 5 stars Sardar's Searching for Panacea.......2006-10-13

What did this Sardar's book "Desperately Seeking Paradise: Journeys of a Sceptical Muslim" speak to me?

It told me that the problem Sardar is facing in his live as a religious man, and the problem is his own religion itself.

But, the problem with every religion is that they are nothing but faith mostly inherited down from parents to their children or society to their members. Their believe is the product of the brain-washed kind of cultural education. Sardar's experience is no difference, he is the victim of this kind of old way of educating, and at the same time he is exposed to the new or modern humanistic non-religious ideas. Clearly he is in a heavy conflicting minds. His journey in his book of biography as an intellectual was to find a panacea of apologetic kind for opposing to the right-wing Muslim Brotherhood or Ben Laden or Komeini or Taliban kond of Islamic ideas. Some how this apologetic way of accepting religion is reminding me to Erasmus's religious humanism.

Therefore in his book he also facing this question: how can Muslims keep the faith but also fit into the modern world? To the right-wing Muslem groups the answer is clear that they are desparately seeking for modern weaponry produced by the West in order to attact the West. But Sardar in this case is different -- I hope so!

5 out of 5 stars a refreshing, informative, inspiring book.......2006-03-11

As a student who is constantly searching for answers on the things around, i find this that not only does solves most of the questions but also inspires me a lot. When i came upon this book, i was having my "darkest moment". i was inspired by the likes of Ibn Rusyd, Imam Bukhari and Sardar himself on their quest for knowledge. As we know, knowledge is power and i felt really powerful physically, mentally and spiritually after reading this book

Another thing brought forward in this book is don't be afraid to question things as that is how Islam works. You have got to question things so that we can understand it fully and don't except things as black and white. We are to engrossed categorizing things as good and bad that we overlook that nothing is perfect; everything has its good and bad. Sure, we always SAY nothing is perfect but do we really acknowledge it?

the issue Sardar brought forward such as the iranian revolution, afghanistan and so on is such an eye opener for me. there's so much to take into, so much lessons to be learned and so much to be understand

this book really inspired me a lot and the questions brought forward made me really ponder hard... if anything that can make a difference, i believe this book really does

4 out of 5 stars Good "Infotainment" about Islam.......2005-12-28

The author relates interesting stories about his experiences with Islam and in the process he educates the reader. At the end of the book you will learn why Ziauddin Sardar is not satisfied with Islam anywhere as it is here on earth now (No, not in Malaysia and not even Turkey). But he does not give up. At the end of the story Mr. Sardar continues to work on reforming Islam for the modern world.
I subtract one star, because the author did not cover the Muslim aversion to charging or earning interest on a loan. I was looking for information about economic details like that, so important for modern society (for example the Saudis gave the author five million pounds to support his efforts on behalf of Islam -- did he put some of that money in the bank and if he did, was it alright for him as a Muslim to keep the interest he gained?) 5 out of 5 stars A very welcome book!.......2005-11-27

At long last, a book that presents the Islam of the optimistic, socially compassionate critical thinker! I'd always known that Islam was not the malicious, vengeful, monolithic bloc that it is often seen to be in the West, but I now know much more about what it IS like, at least through Sardar's eyes -- he illustrates its rich diversity of thought and practice, past and present, and teases out its complexities with elegance and deftness of touch, peppering it liberally with hilarious anecdotes from his many 'journeys'. As such, despite the gravity of the issues he and his friends wrestle with in such heartfelt fashion, the whole thing is both enlightening and eminently readable.

                                  Book Description

Thirty years ago in the attic of an old estate in Massachusetts, John Hanson Mitchell discovered over two thousand antique glass plate negatives. He was told that the photographs had been taken by nineteenth-century ornithologist and conservationist William Brewster, but as a result of a tip from a Harvard research assistant, he began to suspect that the images were actually the work of Brewster's African American assistant, Robert A. Gilbert.
So begins the author's journey. From the maze-like archives at Harvard's Museum of Comparative Zoology to the Virginia countryside and haunts of American expats in 1920s Paris, as well as the rich cultural world of blacks in nineteenth-century Boston, Mitchell brings sharp focus to the figure of Mr. Gilbert, a quiet, unassuming Renaissance man who succeeded as best as he could beneath the iron ceiling of American racism. Told with Mitchell's trademark grace and style, the fascinating story of this "invisible man" deepens our understanding of the African American past as well as the history of American photography.

This remarkable and memorable book recounts a very personal spiritual quest - lasting several decades - to discover, intuit and imagine the life of an African American intellectual (Mr Gilbert) who lived mostly in New England in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.

The book's interest is both historical and character-based; since it is partly factual and researched, and partly novelistic and invented.

The writing is beautiful: Mitchell is one of the best prose stylists around.

I have never come across anything quite like this book - it stays in the mind. It seems to have the qualities of a possible cult classic.

I liked Hanson Mitchell's book while reading it but afterward, sitting there looking out at my pond with its setting of wild birds, the book still warm in my hands, I felt that I had gone a long way with the author, only to be left with very little new information about the black photographer Robert Gilbert.

There is one stunner when the author is placidly re-reading Scott Fitzgerald's novel TENDER IS THE NIGHT, the story of Dick and Nicole Diver's Antibes summer and Dick's subsequent crackup. Suddenly Hanson Mitchell comes across a sentence about a black man in France who had made a fortune with a shoe polish recipe in Scandinavia, Jules Peterson. Like a flash he knows, deep down, that this passage must be referring to his quarry, the elusive photographer Gilbert. Such an identification is invaluable to Fitzgerald scholars, though I think Hanson Mitchell unfairly attempts to convict Fitzgerald of racism on the basis of his fictionalization of some events in Gilbert's life.

As he admits, Gilbert's daughter was alive when he began his quest to find out the truth about her dad, and yet he did not meet her. Unfortunately that leaves him pretty high on the ground when it comes to solid information. At the end of the day, or maybe I'm wrong, did we ever find out if Gilbert did take the photos attributed to Brewster? This book might have made a nice magazine article, but even so it would have been kind of threadbare. Instead Hanson Mitchell pads out his nothing with lots of charming mini-stories about Black Brahmins, birding, the lost generation, really anything that comes into his head.

The photographs are lovely and we must thank the author for attempting to contextualize them. As for the rest, it's like Grandma said, since the deaths of Henry Green and Samuel Beckett has there ever been a book published with a gerund-based title that was anything but second-rate>

5 out of 5 stars "Reimagined" -- because we'll never know for sure.......2005-03-01

Robert A. Gilbert (1870-1942) was probably the first African-American landscape photographer. Author John Hanson Mitchell sets out to prove this fact after finding thousands of glass plates initially attributed to William Brewster (1851-1919) , the first president of the Massachusetts Audubon Society. For it turns out that Brewster had a "factotum" -- Mr. Gilbert, an employee who accompanied him on photographic excursions throughout New England, and who actually took the photos and developed the images. The search for Mr. Gilbert begins.

Several interlocking histories emerge: Mr. Gilbert's life, William Brewster's life, the origins of the Audubon Society, the aristocratic circles of the Boston Brahmins, and the lifestyles of the Southern blacks who migrated north after the Civil War. Each chapter opens with one of Gilbert's b&w photos, giving us just a taste of his work. What a teaser! We want to see them ALL! Hopefully, MassAudubon will someday hold a showing of more of these wonderful bucolic scenes from the beginning of the last century.

Another underlying story here is the relationship of the researcher with his subject. Mitchell is the kind of investigator who knows that the answers he wants cannot be provided by the Internet or through interlibrary loan. Sometimes you just have GO and ASK. He may be a soft-spoken observer, but he has no qualms about going anywhere, doing anything, and talking to anybody who may be able to provide clues in his quest for the truth. His own re-creations of Mr. Gilbert's life take him from the valleys of western Virginia to the mountains of southern New Hampshire, from the streets of Boston to Paris. He watches, he listens, he analyzes. And he gets lucky in meeting a few folks who either knew Mr. Gilbert or at least knew someone who did.

This book provides a great escape into another life in another time. It's also noteworthy in its focus on an average African-American man who wasn't famous in his day, but did good work and should be given credit for it.
