A STUNNING BOOK.......2000-07-03
As one of the critics says; this i s indeed a pageturner... However, there are numerous faults facts in this book. Among them includes that the film IT`S A PLEASURE was a Fox film. Wrong, it was produced by International and released by RKO. Several critical comments on her films are stolen from among others Leslie Halliwell, a notable filmcritic and the ONLY bible for moviebuffs until internet movie database came along. Stories of Sonja and Tyrone are also way over the top; the talk they had in the dressingroom - how did Leif Henie and Raymond Strait get hold of t h a t? Leif was still in Norway at the time. However. There are several items that distinguish this biography; the stories by Sonja`s secretary Dorothy Stevens in particular... It is true that in creating the ice-skating star Sonja Henie, her father created a monster. But in the long run Sonja suffered from it. She was never taught to be a normal person. And indeed: She gave Norway a place in the sun and donated with her third husband Niels Onstad the Henie-Onstad ArtGallery near Oslo. U should visit it if u came to Norway. All of Sonja`s medals and trophies are in a well-guarded room and photos etc from her films are displayed in a huge basement. It must never be forgotten that she gave our nation a great deal - indeed giving the community of Bærum a home for retired people. U WILL see this reading this book that she was a trouper - a woman who was taught to fight and be competetive. And everything she tried her hands on - became lucrative.
Hell on Ice.......1999-10-30
I know and have known quite a people who worked with Sonja or were as close a friend as she would permit and this book seems to confirm all that I've heard over the last 40 years. I met Sonja in 1963 in Pittsburgh at the opening of the Pittsburgh Arena. Despite all her shortcomings as a person, there was something about her that fascinates me as a skater and as a person. Anyone interested in skating should read this book.
Facinating book!.......1998-12-30
For those who loved to watch Sonja Heine, this book is a must, showing her amazing rise to fame, volatile temperment and unbelievable perserverance. You won't be able to put it down from start to finish.

Book Description
Talent Management Systems addresses the transformation Web-based technologies have brought to workforce acquisition and management. It examines proven and leading-edge best practices, and what tactics and strategies organizations should employ to remain competitive in this arena. The book is part practical, offering advice on how to institute best practices in e-recruitment and talent management, and strategic, discussing trends and state of the art technology and practices that should be adopted or avoided.
"We're at the brink of the next global battle in the war for talent, and companies with a firm grasp on today's technologies, and the best view over the horizon, are positioned to win. No one understands the intersection of talent and technology better than Allan Schweyer and, as this book demonstrates, no one tells us the story as clearly as he. This is an essential read and an important work in the now-critical discipline of human capital management."
—Michael Foster, CEO, AIRS, and Author of Recruiting on the Web
"Allan Schweyer has been on the leading edge of recruitment technology since the dawn of the Internet. In many ways the Internet has created more confusion than solutions for the world of recruiting and talent management. It has certainly made things more complex. HR professionals and even company presidents have become desperate for clarity on the future of talent management-Allan Schweyer's book provides that clarity and establishes him as the authority on web-based hiring and talent management. No major implementation decision should be made without this invaluable guide."
—Graham Donald, President, Brainstorm Consulting
"Talent management has suddenly gone from being a nice idea to a core business function. No one knows more about this new function, and the technologies that make it possible, than Allan Schweyer."
—David Creelman, Senior Contributing Editor, HR.com, and Independent Human Capital Analyst
"Once again, Schweyer has produced the best writing in North America on this subject, which I've covered for fifteen years."
—Bill Kutik, Technology Columnist, Human Resource Executive
"As corporate executives quickly come to the shocking realization that the global workforce-and how that talent is managed and developed both locally and globally—will almost unilaterally determine their future success in global markets, few workforce experts have bothered to provide business leaders with a useful compass and map for the next chapter of workforce management. Mr. Schweyer generously and eloquently provides the talent compass and workforce map for the first pragmatic steps of the new global journey."
—John Chaisson, CEO, Global Workforce Solutions
Customer Reviews:
Outstanding! Awesome!.......2004-07-07
My title for this book review may seem a bit out of the ordinary, but so is this book. If you're thinking about buying it, you're probably hesitant because of the unusually high price. Forget the high price issue. If you are an executive, a company owner, or a human resource professional, this book has more value-per-page than practically any other book you'll read this year.
The whole concept of talent management is undergoing major change. The whole field is in a state of evolution as a result of the economy, technology, new approaches to employment, outsourcing, the increasing use of metrics, the emerging strategic partnership of the CEO and CHRO, legal and ethical issues, diversity, and more. Talent management has turned into a jungle that seems to get thicker with every step we take.
With the increasing complication, this field becomes more difficult to understand-at the same time that more people and more companies are entering the arena. Somebody who knows what it's all about needs to write a guidebook that will explain the terms, dig into the issues, and make sense of all this. "Talent Management Systems" is that book. And Allan Schweyer, Executive Director of the Human Capital Institute, the leading comprehensive not-for-profit organization in the field, is the ideal author.
This book covers just about every topic you want to learn about in the talent management arena. The depth is appropriate for the reader who wants a solid overview with enough detail to "get" the picture...and be able to relate all the parts. My problem in reading it was overcoming my habit of turning down page corners. When you turn down almost every page, you eventually give up and realize that you'll probably use the index for reference and re-read at least parts of the book over and over.
In these pages, you'll find lots of best practices. That resource makes this book a valuable asset. Even more valuable, however, is the clarity of presentation as the author explains the terms, the processes, the benefits, and the interrelationships. It's all here. I was a bit concerned when I thumbed through the book and found precious few graphics. As I got into the text, I discovered I didn't need graphics. The illustrative nature of the words is quite sufficient to convey the messages.
The book is current, state-of-the-art. If you're in this field, it should be on your shelf-or better: on your desk. If you're considering any aspect of workforce recruitment, management, development, or retention as a career, read the book now. In fact, suggest that your university professor add it to the class reading list. Read the book before you talk with the prof, and you'll probably discover you know a lot more than the academic does! I've been in this field-and its predecessor fields-for over two decades. Remember, I'm the one who was turning pages down.
"Talent Management Systems" is highly recommended for practitioners, aspirants, and the teachers and mentors-who want to help their protégés, but also keep a step ahead of them.
Book Description
Frankie Saggio reminisces about the era of true wise guys like his Uncle Philly —a contemporary of Al Capone. After all, it was Frankie’s uncle who “taught him the value of a dollar and how to steal it from someone else.” Uncle Philly was from a day when being in a mafia family meant being bound by blood and honor, not like modern day families whose only concern is money. For Frankie, the only way to avoid the modern mob treachery is to avoid getting involved with any single mob family, working “freelance” for all five. Frankie can do this because he is one of the biggest earners in the business, pulling down millions and kicking a share upstairs to the bosses. Though he fights the decision, Frankie is tied by blood to the Bonanno family, Uncle Philly’s family, and current home to Philly’s murderer. Soon after joining the Bonannos, Frankie narrowly escapes an assassination attempt and is busted for a major scam. With little choice, and even less loyalty to the Bonannos, Frankie turns himself over to the Feds on the one condition that he will tell the feds everything, but will not squeal on his own relatives.

If your a mob freak like me any mob book is a great buy. This doesn't dissapoint. buy it, you won't be sorry.
Excellent Great Reading.......2005-11-10
I think that alot of the reviews are written by SAGGIO's old buddies,Whom I'd imagine aren't to happy about his book It's obvious that thing about John Gotti is a typo.
I think the book was great and have done some research on this subject and Saggio's the real Deal.
I've Enjoyed it greatly.
THANKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!
You've got to be kidding........2005-10-04
This book is horrible. I mean, whomever believes that John Gotti was underboss to Big Paul is not just ignorant of what really happend, they are plain out stupid. This book doesn't even have any insider info. It's just public stuff that everyone already knows. Just pure garbage. The author should be left in the street for writing this trash.
Phony baloney.......2005-03-08
This book is so bad it is funny. It's all made up! The "tell" is the stuff about Gotti being underboss under Castellano.
The real underboss was Aniello Dellacroce, and after him it was Tommy Billotti, who was killed with Castellano.
Real "inside story." Real ca-ca.
Badda bing, badda boom, badda bad.......2005-01-27
Bad bad bad are the only three things wrong with this book. The author can't even get straight that Neil Dellacroce was the underboss under Castellano and that Gotti was never more than capo. Castellano hated Gotti and wanted him dead, not underboss.
That's how full of it this book is. He or his ghostwriter couldn't get basic facts straight and obviously the rest is just made-up.
Just one big snow job, full of obvious lies and boring.

A Grand Old Tale of Desperate Battles on the Frontier.......2005-03-07
"Galloping Jim" Parker was one of the Old Army's (1865-1914) top soldiers. A graduate of West Point, he began his frontier service at the time when Custer and the 7th Cavalry were riding to their deaths at the Little Big Horn - and ended it only when denied service at the front in France in World War I.
In the interval period, Parker fought alongside Ranald Mackenzie in the cavalry battles with the Kickapoo, the Kiowa and Cheyenne; he saw the last Buffalo herds, went with Mackenzie to put down the Ute uprising in Colorado, and then rode south to join Crook and Miles in their campaigns against Geronimo.
Parker's life was a rich one - and he ended up a Major General in the Army. But it was one, if he is to be believed, of missed opportunities. For example in the campaign against Geronimo Parker writes that it was his troop that actually tracked Geronimo down - but allowed Lieutenant Gatewood the honor of cornering him and effecting his surrender. Gatewood of course received the credit, not Parker.
Parker's second greatest missed opportunity was in choosing not to serve in the Rough Riders due to an antipathy towards Leonard Wood, the commander of the unit. Wood actually asked Parker to help him form the regiment - and he would have been the ranking Army officer next to Wood in the regiment - or as he put it, Theodore Roosevelt never forgot a friend or someone who served alongside him in Cuba. Because of this decision Parker ended up training troops at Chickamauga camp until the Spanish-American war was over - and then briefly went to Cuba, and from there to the Philippines.
Indeed it is the chapters on Frontier service against the Indians and the savage fighting in the Philippines that covers most of Parker's book - along with vignettes of his personal life and those whom he served with - he is flattering towards Mackenzie and Lawton - less so towards Wood and Pershing. At the end, due to age and some unfortunate remarks about "chasing greasers" during the Villa Expedition, Parker was denied service in France when America went to war against Imperial Germany, although he briefly went over to the trenches to observe the fighting. Full of self-promotion, though honest, Parker bitterly concludes that although he was in excellent health, he was forcibly retired from the army at the beginning of 1918 after 45 years of service.
Despite Parker's occasional self-indulgent tone, his work is a classic tale of old army life. "The Old Army" is a worthy choice for the Custeriana buffs - even though Custer is only mentioned in passing, and for those who enjoyed works like "40 Miles a Day on Beans and Hay".

In the global search for culprits and causes in the rise of terrorism, former Israeli ambassador to the United Nations Dore Gold shines a spotlight on a nation many think of as a close ally of the United States: Saudi Arabia. As he explains in Hatred's Kingdom: How Saudi Arabia Supports the New Global Terrorism, Gold believes that the Saudi government is greatly influenced by the Islamist sect known as Wahhabism and, he explains, that influence has lead to Saudi support of terrorism in the Middle East, Europe, the United States and around the world. The historical portion of Gold's argument, where he traces the emergence of Muhammad ibn Abd al-Wahhab and the changing face of Saudi leadership, is admirably extensive and detailed. His modern research is a little more uneven, relying on statements by various Muslim clergy members, letters to the editors of newspapers, opinion pieces, and other evidence that is rarely damnable. Curiously, mentions of Israel and the long-standing Arab-Israeli conflict are much more infrequent than one would expect from an Israeli diplomat and scholar. But regardless of one's opinion of Gold's research or his alarming conclusions, the book offers something not often found in modern political nonfiction: a coherent structure, exhaustive research, and a clear and consistent perspective on the ongoing threat of terrorism. --John Moe
Book Description
Dore Gold, former Israeli Ambassador to the U.N. and internationally known Middle East expert, uses previously unpublished intelligence documents to piece together the links between the current wave of global terrorism-from the World Trade Center to Bali, Indonesia-and the ideology of hatred taught in the schools and mosques of Saudi Arabia.
Customer Reviews:
waste of time.......2007-05-10
Dore Gold has written a brave and honest book that, in previous civilizations, would have alarmed the populace and surely spurred them to action. All the evidence you need is right there in the appendices: photocopies, facsimilies, letters, what not. The case is airtight.
But what's the point?
Honestly. Saudi Arabia has been exposed to death. As exposed as anything can be. Everybody knows the score. Even the most mentally impaired village idiots in the backwaters of the Kalahari know that the Saudis have been encouraging and financing global terrorism for years, denying it all the while. This isn't news: anybody who was going to do anything about the situation has already done so, or made up their minds not to.
What would have made the book better is if Gold had gone beyond the mere reporting of non-news into an analysis of why the situation is the way it is. In other words, what exactly are the forces that compel or enable the people involved, from the illiterate Sri Lankan navvy sweeping the streets of Riyadh all the way up to well-informed advisors in the highest levels of U.S. government, and everybody in between, to keep their mouths shut?
The bets have all been placed. Everybody's hoping they can just stick it out and make their pile before the whole thing implodes, praying all the while it won't splatter on them.
Excellent and Enlightening.......2007-04-25
Contrary to some of the criticism leveled toward this book, I found this author to be very balanced and fair toward Islam. For example, Gold identifies the aspect of Wahabi theology that justifies jihad toward non-Wahabi Muslims, such as Shi'ites and Sufis. By labeling the latter as 'polytheists', extremist Wahabi groups have justified violence toward these groups as well as desecration of sacred Islamic sites. Gold documents both historic and modern examples of this, such as the intrusion of Wahabi jihadists into the Balkans.
I found it valuable to learn the symbiotic relationship between the Saudi Royal Family and the Wahabi clergy and how the royal family gives the latter power and influence in order to maintain favor. Also, how oil money has funded the export of radical Wahabi ideology and the terrorist activities conducted by the latter. And paradoxically, because of Western dependence on oil, the money came from the very countries the Wahabi ideology holds in contempt!
Sometimes the book is dense and hard to follow but I think every member of government who has a role in international affairs should read it.
Sadly, in reading this and other studies, it becomes apparent that Western democracies ended up supporting many terrorist regimes in their attempt to fight the Cold War. Supporting the 'bad guys' just because they are against one's current enemies is a dangerous and risky strategy indeed and makes us look like hypocrites. Jimmy Carter referred to Khomeini as a 'holy man'. We supported Sadaam Hussein. Look where it got us!
Hatred's Kingdom: How Saudi Arabia Supports the New Global Terrorism by Dore Gold.......2007-02-24
An excellent, comprehensive discussion of the roots of Islamic terrorism.
A history buff gets shamed..........2006-07-30
I am embarrassed to realize the extent of my own ignorance regarding the Wahabi menace. As a lover of history and one who could draw a fairly accurate survey of the events that shaped the West during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, I was grievously unaware of the monstrous theology and murderous campaign of Ibn `Abd Al-Wahhab. One wonders how the terrors of the crusades could compare to the genocidal murder of "impure" Muslims by the fanatical armies of Wahab. One wonders still why the West fails to see the ever-present and growing threat posed by the Wahhabi poison which spans out from Saudi Arabia (our allies?) to infect Muslims around the world. This book is required reading for every American who feels the need to make some progress toward understanding why some Muslims cultivate hatred above all other "virtues." Want to know why supposedly godly people feel compelled to murder innocent women, children, and men? Want to understand why they have no difficulty murdering their own kinsmen and fellow Muslims? It's the poisonous Muslim heresy of Wahhabism. Where does it come from and how is it funded and propagated across the globe? Saudi Arabia is Hatred's Kingdom as Dore Gold has dubbed it. This book is a good starting place and a dreadful portent of things to come as long as Saudi Arabia is not held accountable. The Saudi mission to spread Wahhabism has been incredibly "successful" in Indonesia, Chechnya, Bosnia, America, and of course, Palestine where their PLO has become the center of a maelstrom of Islamic hatred. One stat that might be instructive for all those who think the extremists are a small minority is that 79% of Palestinian children state that they want to be suicide bombers when they grow up. It would seem the "extremists" are the few who want peace. If you think this is all an academic discussion for Americans consider that 70% of the Mosques in America teach the Wahhabi doctrine. Get this book and learn what those "friendly" neighborhood mosque-goers really think about you.
Good start, weak finish.......2005-11-29
I found the historical chapters of the book (up until about 1960) to be most useful section. As we pass into King Fahd's reign, the reasoning becomes much more speculative. Nonetheless, the author presents a plausible scenario. Careful documentation of the links between the major players is useful, and however you slice it, the latter chapters show the razors' edge the political leaders of Saudi Arabia must walk.
