5 out of 5 stars A wonderful read.......2004-10-01

This is one of those books that, once started, you just don't want to put down. Heartwarming to the end. Jan seems to have captured the soul of her family in this book. I enjoyed it thoroughly.

5 out of 5 stars LOVE TO READ!!.......2004-09-14

I laughed and cried my way through this intimate, compassionate portrayal of a family's love and deep devotion to a wonderful father. I believe it was a divinely inspired gift to Jan Groft, from the Lord and her father, to write this moving testimony to God's saving grace and mercy. Those who read it cannot help but be touched and drawn closer to a faith that completely trusts in the outcome of God's plan for their lives.

5 out of 5 stars "A Fantastic Book" .......2004-09-13

I am an avid reader. I couldn't put this book down. What a wonderful tribute to a wonderful father. It brought back happy and sad memories of a family, and what it means to lose a beloved parent. Everyone should have a father who shows us that laughter is the best medicine in the world. Jan Groft is now on my list of favorite authors.

Story of a battle with cancer and the added fight with our HMOs and medical bureaucracy told through the medium of emails. This is a history of the my wife's struggle with our failed medical system, the battles with bureaucracy and her brave fight to get the treatment she needed from the specialists and institution she wanted. I want to show that, in order to get the type of treatment you deserve and need: you have to do battle every step of the way; you have to take charge of your own treatment and monitor it every step of the way; you need an advocate to stand and fight with you and for you; and, you need the support of your spouse or significant other, family, friends, employer and the community as a whole. I hope to show bravery of a wonderful woman and the support she got from everyone, the battle she fought. And hope that this will encourage others in her position to take charge of their own treatment with fortitude and courage.

    Book Description

What are movies? Once derided as senseless entertainment, they have gradually assumed a place among the arts. Raymond Haberski traces the trajectory of this evolution throughout the twentieth century, from nickelodeon amusements to the age of the financial blockbuster.

Haberski begins by looking at the barriers to film's acceptance as an art form, including the Chicago Motion Picture Commission hearings of 1918-1920, one of the most revealing confrontations over the use of censorship in the motion picture industry. He then examines how movies overcame the stigma attached to popular entertainment through such watershed events as the creation of the Museum of Modern Art's Film Library in the 1920s and battles between movie critics Pauline Kael and Andrew Sarris in the 1960s.

Kael and Sarris's arguments heralded a golden age of criticism, and Haberski focuses on the roles of Kael, Sarris, James Agee, Roger Ebert, and others, in the creation of "cinephilia." Described by Susan Sontag as "born of the conviction that cinema was an art unlike any other," this love of cinema centered on coffee houses, universities, art theaters, film festivals, and, of course, foreign films.

The lively debates over the place of movies in American culture began to wane in the 1970s, and in provocative and insightful prose Haberski places the blame on the loss of cultural authority and on the increasing irrelevance of the meaning of art. He concludes with a persuasive call for the re-emergence of a middle ground between art and entertainment, "something more complex, ambiguous, and vexing-something worth thought."

    5 out of 5 stars It's Not Only A Movie.......2001-10-01

Within the last century were developed different art forms based on new technology. No one had ever before heard a radio play, and television, well, let's not get into a discussion about whether that is art or not. But the same discussion about movies has been going on for a long while. It even seems to make a difference as to whether you regard them as "movies," "film," or "cinema." Let's use movie, for that is what Raymond J. Haberski, Jr., uses in _It's Only a Movie!: Films and Critics in American Culture_ (University Press of Kentucky). If you like thinking about movies, rather than just sitting for some entertainment, and are interested in the American history of film criticism, this is a book you will enjoy.

That movies are an art form is a proposition that has been long debated. It would seem to me that if one simply considers the films of theatrical productions (like, say, _Rope_ or _A Long Day's Journey Into Night_), it becomes very easy to answer the question in the affirmative, but none of the players in Haberski's volume seems to have performed this exercise. But even if we allow that such efforts are truly art, does that make _The Mummy Returns_ art, too? I would say yes, but perhaps a better answer is "Who cares?" Even so, there are lots of people who have cared about the issue, from the beginning of the movies. The first critics of film recognized that movies were taking up a space in culture somewhere between fine art and mindless amusement, and movie criticism has hovered in discussion over where they should actually go ever since. Haberski gives a fine summary of how critics looked at the silent movies, and how (when the Supreme Court decided they were products, not free speech), criticism was used in formation of censorship boards. It has an excellent chapter on Theodore Dreiser's attempt to get his novel, _An American Tragedy_, filmed in what he thought was a proper fashion. Dreiser took Paramount to court; like critics if the time, he wanted studios to "get serious" about art uncorrupted by commerce. He lost. Here is also an excellent summary of the famous Sarris / Kael feud over "auteur theory."

Haberski obviously cares for his subject. Painstaking research into this narrow field of endeavor is easily apparent in all his chapters. He has a sense of humor, and does not take these battles (or himself) with excessive seriousness, as his title indicates. There is a good deal to be enjoyed here by anyone interested in 20th century culture and film.

    5 out of 5 stars A great work from a great writer.......2001-09-12

This book rocks. I know its probably written for smart people, but even if you're not too smart, you'll like it. Very informative. This Haberski guy really knows his movies. He must have developed his love for cinema while at SUNY Albany, enjoying movies with his buddies at the campus cinema.

4 out of 5 stars Where have all the critics gone?.......2001-09-06

As a film critic for several online sites, I share with others of my
vocation a distress that while the public may be reading us, the
reviews themselves seem to be influencing only a few in their
choices of films. I like to say defensively that it is not the critic's
function to operate as a Consumer Reports guide, to send people
to the theaters or to guide them into settling back into their
couches. But the writing is on the wall; or, rather, the writing
should be there but it isn't: critics have lost much of the authority
they once had to influence the public. In a short book filled with
lush prose, Richard J. Haberski Jr. strives to tell us why critical
authority has declined albeit less rapidly than the current
NASDAQ chart, topping his tome off with a mixed conclusion.
On the one hand movies are such a joyful medium, the film world
may not really suffer for the breakdown in authority. On the other
hand, "It is sad that today movie critics appear powerless ot help
us discover the art of moviegoing."

Tracing a brief film history encompassing the impact of select
organizations like the National Board of Review on the movie
choices available to us, Haberski's book is most enlightening and
relevant (at least to critics like me) when it referees debates
among several major writers such as Pauline Kael, Andrew
Sarris, Stanley Kauffmann and Dwight MacDonald--writers who
have had often divergent viewpoints on such issues as the
importance of the director, the gap between the younger and
older audience, the relative values of elitism and democracy, and
most of all the big question of whether movies should even be
considered an art that justifies critical analysis.

Theory aside, the general public felt comfortable with the idea of
art until the dawn of the Pop era signalled by the ideas and
paintings of Andy Warhol. The book reaches a high point in its
examination of the Big Debate between the Andrew ("auteur
theory) Sarris--who believes that the director is the all-important
creator of a film, and the late Pauline ("It's Only a Movie!") Kael -
-who was known for toughness toward sugarcoated movies like
"The Sound of Music" and praised almost universally condemned
fare like "Bonnie and Clyde." Despite her staunch advocacy of
strong films, Kael amassed a large readership with her disdain
for pretension and love for good films whether or not they had
    "something to say."

"It's Only a Movie!" is a must-read for critics and would make a
sure-fire addition to the library of movie buffs everywhere.

      5 out of 5 stars A Unique Book.......2003-06-02

This book is the perfect antidote to the left-brain fixation of music pedagogy. In a series of beautifully written aphorisms (mini-poems), the author explores the nature and origins of music (from the Lullaby) along with its true purpose (to heal). A central part of the author's philosophy is that intention is more important than technique, and for this reason, potentially anyone can use music in this way. A truly heartening book that presents, in a totally original way, a new perspective on music and how we can use it.

      5 out of 5 stars Heart-inspiring, thought-provoking, delightful!.......2003-05-30

I have enjoyed many of the books of Dr. John Diamond, but there is something about this book in particular that makes me smile with pleasure. A handful of short essays sets up the context for Diamond's poems (or "aphorisms," as he calls them) on music - and each poem by itself packs as much wallop as a full-length essay! Perhaps it is the delightful concision of these haiku-like statements that brings such lightness and humor - and poignancy - to this book. It is a book for all who love music - and even for those who think they don't, for it is about creativity and relationships and family and so many topics. A good example of everything I am saying about the book is this excerpt: "Marriage therapy?/ Sing duets." What a world of thought-provoking, heart-inspiring power lies in such a lovely little "haiku."

5 out of 5 stars Well Designed Book!.......2005-07-26

I had to get this book for a Marketing class I had to take. The design of the book was awesome! I really enjoyed the Chapter video cases that provided current examples of the marketing concepts covered. The "marketing dictionary" section in the lower right hand corners made studying a breeze. Not only do the authors give examples of the marketing concepts and strategies with current examples, they also provide the "Marketing Miss" section, which points out real marketing problems, their outcomes and lessons learned. There is also a "'net Work" section in each chapter, where you can go only line and research marketing data! I enjoyed reading this book, so getting through two chapters a week wasn't a grind (unlike my management book... but that's another story).

1 out of 5 stars Horrid. Useless. Ugly. Brought to you by Krispy Kreme.......2005-04-29

This was the textbook for my introductory marketing course. It has only provided one insight for me, and that is that business schools often find horrendous ways to teach.

The cover should be a warning for anyone considering this book. It's a big ad for Krispy Kreme. A box of Krispy Kreme donuts. A tray of their popular glazed donuts. A cup of Krispy Kreme coffee. The words "Glazed, Jelly, Chocolate-Iced, Custard-Filled." What is this book trying to do, teach us about marketing or make us crave sticky pastries? There's something wrong and disgusting about using an educational tool as a form of product placement.

It only gets worse inside. The book tries to make up for its lack of substance with bright colors, strangely designed diagrams and weird anecdotes in the margins that barely even relate to the topic at hand. Even worse are the constant display of ads with captions that struggle to justify why they're there at all. Certainly, promotions is a key part of marketing, but I can't help but get the feeling that the reason why these particular ads are included is because the company paid the publisher, not because they're good examples.

The only reason why I'm even keeping this waste of paper is to remind me of why I'm so disgusted with the attitudes endorsed here. Unfortunately, this isn't the only business class I've hated because of its poorly developed ideas and lack of objective proof. As such, I plan on focusing more on my psychology degree and dropping business - a person shouldn't have to endure this kind of frustration for the sake of getting an education.

If you're a professor, let me make this clear, THIS BOOK IS A VERY BAD CHOICE. I would only suggest you use it if you want your students to come to class, as they won't be able to glean anything intelligent from the book by itself. If you're a student who has to buy this book for a class, I offer my most sincere condolences.

          Book Description

Anselm Grün, O.S.B., famed Benedictine author and cellarer—supplies manager—of his monastery at Münsterschwarzach, offers brief reflections on aspects of the Rule of Benedict. He sketches the life of Benedict and reflects on how Benedict's instructions enable one to live constantly in the presence of God. Even the most mundane objects are signs of the presence of God. It is not merely that we focus our attention on God, but that we're aware that God always focuses attention on us, loving and encouraging us in all things. For example: he calls the cellarer to "regard all utensils and goods of the monastery as sacred vessels of the altar."

Grün also ponders how work is an aid to prayer and how the Benedictine vow of stability is essential to building community. Silence and the solitude that characterize the monastic are conditions for the possibility of genuine community.

Each chapter concludes with a brief reflection on the state of contemporary society and how the aspect of the Rule of Benedict treated in the chapter applies to the needs of today.

5 out of 5 stars Practical Ideas for Balanced Life.......2006-02-25

Anselm Grun, a Benedictine monk with a doctorate in theology, couldn't be more practical. To set the stage, he points out the similarities between Benedict's time and our own. Fifteen hundred years ago, Benedict responded to the continual changes of the day with a demand for "stability." Interpreting Benedict's rule, Grun suggests that self-imposed external order brings order to one's moods and feelings as well, rather than simply pushing them down.

Grun applies Benedict's message to the twenty-first century plight of feeling overburdened by work. Today, he writes, many wish to leave the world of work altogether, often a flight from both reality and God. But Benedict's rule and the rhythm of the monastery guide us toward managing work in the light of prayer. Grun provides well defined steps for dealing with irritations on the job, clarifying goals, doing one's best then "turning off" the world of work. Throughout the chapters on discernment, peace, and community, Grun follows the same format, connecting Benedict's writing with the modern world and offering concrete suggestions.

This is a valuable, easy-to-follow resource for individuals and small groups, who might find some surprises in the section on community.

5 out of 5 stars A comprehensive look at the 19th!.......2003-05-03

It is difficult finding books that cover single regiments with solid information that only pertains to the unit itself sometimes. Author Craig Dunn has put together a very comprehensive book that covers the birth of the 19th Indiana to final muster in 1865. I liked the fact that Dunn didn't dwell on only officers but brought the private soldier to life as short biographies and the details of their involvement were written about. Dunn covers early exhaustive marches, campaigns, camp life, politics and explains the many personalities within the 19th. Dunn backs his material up well with references and also many statistics are added that enhance this book tremendously. This book serves as a great resource tool in learning about the hard fighting 19th and I recommend it to many interested in learning about the tough regiment of the famous Iron Brigade.

5 out of 5 stars The Best Nineteenth Indiana Book.......2001-02-16

What a great book on the Nineteenth Indiana Volunteers of the Iron Brigade. The book was maticulously researched and documented. The best part about the book was that the documentation did not detract from the enjoyable reading. The pictures and roster were very helpful. I have personally read over 200 Civil War regimental histories and this one was my favorite. I have read two other books on the Nineteenth Indiana and found them to be lacking in documentation and in ease of reading. This book is the best.

I've had this book for about 5 yrs. and just got around to reading it. Dunn's book is very readable and informative, he blends fact with a strong human element. I look forward to more of his work

5 out of 5 stars Thoroughly Enjoyable Reading.......1999-12-14

This book was simply a pleasure to read. While it was well documented, the documentation did not grind the book to a halt. I would consider this more as an anecdotal history rather than a military history. The author puts a human face on a serious topic. I have now read all of the books in print on the Iron Brigade and the Nineteenth Indiana Volunteers and this one is the best.

5 out of 5 stars Best History of the 19th Indiana.......1999-12-10

As an ardent student of history I found this book to be wonderfully documented and accurate. I have read all of the books about the 19th Indiana and the Iron Brigade and found this one to be the best by far. I was so intrigued with the book that I visited the critical archives and libraries cited in Mr. Dunn's book to verify their accuracy. Each entry which I checked was quoted exactly as I found them. I have heard through some Civil War circles that there has been an attempt to impugn this book in an attempt to increase sales of the other 19th Indiana books. If so, this is sad. I have recommended this book to all of my friends.

            Book Description

This highly acclaimed book offers a complete political history of East Central Europe from World War II to the present. Return to Diversity, now in its third edition, introduces a new co-author, Nancy M. Wingfield, and has been fully updated to cover events up through the 1990s. It includes an account and analysis of the developments in post-communist regimes throughout the region, addressing the transformation of each country during the first post-communist decade. It discusses coalition politics, ethnic discord, and issues of democratic development. This new edition features additional maps and extensively revised reading lists to reflect the most current scholarship in the field. Unsurpassed in scope, in depth of analysis, and in fairness and objectivity, Return to Diversity is an invaluable resource for students of this regions history and politics.

            4 out of 5 stars tangled history.......2007-02-23

The tangled and often bloody history of eastern Europe is updated to include events after the end of the Cold War. Rothschild writes of the conflicting influences that drove events. Like the myriad nationalisms (Czech, Slovak, Hungarian, Serb, Croat...) that were often suppressed under the Warsaw Pact. During the Cold War, these could often be neglected by analysts. Yet later, some would erupt into open tension or outright conflict. The latter being the Yugoslav Wars.

The book's title alludes to this suppressed diversity of heritages and ethnicities. It also contains material about the Cold War that only became available after its end.

5 out of 5 stars Still the best survey of communist Eastern Europe out there.......2001-06-14

Rothschild's _Return To Diversity_ really is an outstanding classic (easily withstanding the cliched abuse of that label!). I have yet to see a better one-volume treatment of the postwar political history of Eastern Europe. Not that Geoffrey Swain and Nigel Swain's book is bad, just that Rothschild is richer and treats each country in more detail.

Rothschild does not deal with the Baltics or other republics of the former Soviet Union. He treats Poland, Hungary, the former Czechoslovakia, the former Yugoslavia, Romania, Bulgaria, and Albania in their respective sections in each chapter.

His introductory background chapters, one on the interwar period and an even longer one on WW II are excellent summaries, considering Rothschild has already written the classic on _East Central Europe between the Two World Wars_.

I used _Return to Diversity_ both as a student ten years ago, and recently to teach a course on the politics of Eastern Europe; I was very happy to find it still being published. Going back through it, I was amazed how consistently Rothschild treats each country on the topics of leadership politics, economic development, social relationships vis-a-vis each regime, the extent of opposition and civil society, and foreign relations. He did it so well that I was able to construct a one-page "grille" of essential, quick and dirty information to help students compare countries (after having them concentrate on two countries each).

Not only is this book perfect to catch students up on communist history in the most efficient way, I personally find it invaluable to verify basic facts and details quickly. Country specialists will, of course, need to look elsewhere for details for which surveys simply don't have the space.

The updated chapter on post-communist politics (presumably where most of Dr. Wingfield's contribution comes in) is good as far as it goes, but frankly, you'll find more thorough treatments of post-communist Eastern Europe elsewhere in more space than this volume has available.

Overall, this book is well worth the money and easily merits five stars. The style of writing may put some laypeople and students off, but the fact is that Rothschild writes very eloquently as an "old school" historian, and if it sometimes seems dry, it's because of all the information he managed to cram into it. I repeat, this book is the best survey of communist Eastern Europe out there, and will no doubt remain so for some time to come.

              Book Description

Since the death of Stalin, the supposedly monolithic character of the Socialist states of East Central Europe has been subjected to serious and major challenges: from Yugoslavia in the late 1940s, from East Germany, Poland, and Hungary in the '50s, from Albania, Romania, and Czechoslovakia in
the '60s, from Poland in the '70s and early '80s. Written by one of the world's foremost authorities on East Central Europe, this informative study examines these challenges and their consequences in all their complexity, providing an extensive political history of the area from World War II to the
              present.
A sequel to Rothschild's highly acclaimed East Central Europe Between the Two World Wars, this up-to-date volume offers a country-by-country account of the widespread political malaise in East Central Europe. Rothschild provides an insightful discussion of the Solidarity movement in Poland, a lucid
analysis of Titoism in Yugoslavia, and a thorough review of Soviet policy toward the area under all leaders since World War II. In addition, he examines the acute or impending crises in countries such as Poland and Romania, and he assesses the problems that Gorbachev faces in managing the
              increasingly restive Soviet bloc nations.
Unsurpassed in scope, in depth of analysis, and in fairness and objectivity, Return to Diversity is an invaluable resource for anyone interested in this vital bloc of nations.

                  Book Description

Highly acclaimed and thoroughly updated, Return to Diversity, Fourth Edition, provides a comprehensive political history of East Central Europe from World War II to the present. An engaging and straightforward political narrative, the book is organized chronologically in a country-by-country format that students can easily navigate. Each section summarizes and examines the most important themes in Eastern Europe during the rise and fall of Communism. The text features balanced discussions of relevant political events, along with a detailed analysis of the causes and consequences of Communism from the perspective of post-Communist regimes. Nancy M. Wingfield has revised the fourth edition to incorporate social and economic history into the text's strong discussions of political history. She also provides expanded coverage of the resurgence of nationalism in the 1980s, the role of dissident movements in the shift to democracy, and the problems of Communism. To make the region's history even more relevant to students, Return to Diversity now concludes with a compelling look at the contemporary reintegration of the "new" and "old" Europes. Unsurpassed in scope, depth of analysis, and objectivity, Return to Diversity continues to be an invaluable resource for both professors and students of this region's vivid political history.

                            Book Description

The future of Earth's environment will be decided in Asia, home to 60 percent of the world's population and some of the world's fastest-growing economies. As an award-winning investigative journalist based in Bankok, James Fahn spent a decade grappling with the challenges facing the region's mega-cities, tropical forests, coastlines, and societies dashing toward modernity. In A Land on Fire, he shares his findings - the profound implications for global issues such as climate change, the loss of biodiversity, and the greening of world trade. He explores Southeast Asia's environmental battles through the eyes of the people fighting them, and recounts his many adventures while covering them. Whether chasing down log smugglers along the Thai-Burmese border, exposing the dumping of toxic mercury into the Gulf of Thailand by multinational oil corporations, or covering the controversy surrounding the filming of the movie The Beach, Fahn provides unique insight into the relationship between sustainable development and democracy, the crippling impact of corruption, and the environmental challenges facing us all.

                            5 out of 5 stars A terrific story.......2004-05-24

Jim Fahn details Thailand's uneasy embrace of globalization in the '90s with a Thomas Friedman-like awareness. He celebrates Southeast Asia's torrid economic rise, its bloody battles for democracy and its struggles for cultural self-determinism with an unflinching eye on the wrecking ball.

5 out of 5 stars Informative and entertaining.......2003-07-15

Fahn's personal anecdotes add color to his solid research about a country, its people and a culture he got to know well over many years. Personally, I thought it was refreshing to get information from someone who's actually been on the ground and seen a situation -- rather than from someone who draws their conclusions from someone else's study results. He includes info from a variety of sources, but not at the expense of first-hand knowledge. Also liked the way that he explained how he got some of his stories -- what a reporter has to do in a developing country, where corporate interests sometimes make it dangerous just to report on a problem.

5 out of 5 stars A Land on Fire is outstanding - rich in detail and readable.......2003-05-01

A Land on Fire is a superb book - informative, rich in detail, and readable. It traces Southeast Asia's environmental challenges through a treasure of engaging stories. In the narrative we meet all kinds of people - farmers, fishermen, indigenous leaders, eco tourism operators, loggers, government foresters, journalists, oil riggers. Woven tightly together with journalistic skill, their stories tell us much about the environmental crisis setting upon Southeast Asia.

Thailand is a country I have lived in and know well. From the first page to the last, Fahn shows a profound understanding of the country, a respect for its special qualities, and a passion for preserving its environmental heritage.
