A once-in-a-lifetime book.......2006-05-06
The insight, sensitivity, and nobleness of character found in these pages would be notable if they were found in the words of a novel. The fact that they also serve as a historical record and the loving tribute of a devoted widow make them profound. The challenge offered to the reader by the example and set by Jim Elliot further enhances this book to palce it among the very finest I have ever encountered.

Shadow of the Almighty is by far the best biography I have ever read!!! It has been said that "You will be the same today, except for the people you meet and the books you read", I have found this to be very true in my life.
I feel you can glean so many spiritual nuggets from this book. From raising kids, praying for them, allowing God to use them, the importance of eating healthy and exercising, the value of education and when education is taking the place of God and true knowledge of Him....
Reading this book, almost makes the movie End of the Spear seem shallow. Unless you know the history of these men's lives before they went into missions it is easy to be disillusioned and think that a group of over zealous guys decided to go and reach the savage Auca Indianans, which is not the case. It was an absolute calling of God on each of their lives that God had been preparing them for most of their lives (at least this is the case with Jim Elliot). Even Elizabeth Elliot, Jim's wife, had the calling on her life. They were spiritually, intellectually, and physically prepared. Yes, they were a group of young, good looking, and fun guys, but they also were spiritually mature beyond their years and they knew their calling.
Elizabeth Elliot began compiling journal entries and letters of Jim's immediately after his death to begin the writing of Shadow of the Almighty, while the hurt and sting of her lose was still fresh! You will not find regret, resentment, bitterness or anger in her writing; only a life devoted to God even unto death. So while the book focuses on the life of Jim, remember it was his newly young widowed wife who wrote the very words contained within its pages.
I guess what so impresses me about this book, is that it is more than the retelling of Jim's life. Throughout the book are original writings of Jim's, you see what makes his heart beat, his passion, his frustrations, his surrendered obedience, his incredible faith. You will see God's sovereignty, His hand, leading and weaving Jim's life and death.
The story begins with his childhood, and continues on up to his death. Really his story still carries on today. How many people has Jim's life impacted even now 50 years later? While in college ,Jim at one point lets His grades suffer a bit so that he can focus on earning the Degree of A.U.G. (Approved Under God). I am so impressed with chapter 3, here you will find a handsome, athletic, intelligent young man keep his focus on the Lord in an atmosphere that pulls most people away. At this point he doesn't even take his parents advice, if it is not what he is hearing from the Spirit. His obedience to Christ makes him a true leader among his classmates.
Following is a journal entry of Jim's, it show the wisdom and insight he had as a young man. "No one warns young people to follow Adam's example. He waited until God saw his need. Then God made Adam sleep, prepared for his mate, and brought her to him. We need more of this 'being asleep' in the will of God. Then we can receive what He brings us in His own time, if at all. Instead we are bloodhounds after a partner, considering everyone we see until our minds are so concerned with the sex problem that we can talk of nothing else when bull-session time comes around. It is true that a fellow cannot ignore women-but he can think of them as he ought-as sisters, not as sparring partners!"
The life of man totally committed to the will of God.......2005-10-21
This is my absolute favorite book of all time. In an age when I struggle to find like-minded people around me, Jim Elliot encourages and inspires my heart. In an introduction recently added to the book, Elisabeth Elliot says it all. She describes how HUNDREDS of young men over the years have come up to her at conferences or book signings and told her "that book changed my life." God answered Jim Elliot's prayer that he would be "A testament to the value of knowing God." It's so amazing to me to think how God could use this one man to reach so many people. Great book. If you are a young guy like me and wanting to live earnestly for Christ, you've got to read this book.
Living for God.......2005-06-24
All too often people remember Jim Elliot as one of the 5 who were killed trying to take the message of Jesus to a stone age tribe. This book shows that Jim Elliot was more than that one event. In the book you see that he lived for God to the same degree that he died for God. A reader of this book will see that they too can live a totally dedicated life for God. This book is a real apathy killer.

At first I thought the prims series was just some other strategy guide company,but I was wrong. With my buying of the Tomb Raider 1 strategy guide it was proved to be a great company. I don't normally write reviews, but I also rely on the reviews of others to help me with my selection.
As any other Amazoner, I normally find that the review section provides a balanced view of the quality of a book's contents and should help those considering a purchase. In this case, however, I can only assume they were written by the author/publisher. If they were written by real people, they are going to be in a lot of trouble if they actually try to go into business with this as their guide.
The book uses a story of a brother and sister being pushed into business together through twists of fate. The brother finds himself in the position of keeping his sister's dream afloat and, despite being successful as a city business broker, is unable to even pre-empt the most basic of business concepts.
Nice enough little story (had it been well written), but to use this as a vehicle only works if you're willing to get your hands dirty with real business mechanics and the DETAIL of running the business.
The most cringe-worthy element was the 'elusive saviour' who provided the wisdom. This was clearly the alter-ego of the author (or, in fact, the ego of the author) and would have been worthy of such an exhalted position in the story had he actually imparted any wisdom.
The information in this book could be summed up by the following:
1. Beware of a deal that seems too good to be true, as it probably is.
2. In any deal, not only work out what is in it for you, but also for the other person.
3. Work on your numbers. If you can't make the investment pay, then don't do it. Maximise the use of your premises for revenue generating activities.
4. Employ the best staff. Invest in your staff and treat them like humans.
Hardly rocket science.
All the knowledge in this book can be gained from even the slightest experience in the service industry and just an ounce of common sense.
There are many many many better books out there - don't kid yourself into thinking that the Spa industry is so special! Go look at pioneers in the service industry; try Disney, Virgin, even Starbucks. You'll find a better written story AND more ideas for your business (no matter what size it is or what you're doing).

This book captures the reasons why people choose to be in Spa Services. To find a book about Spa operations that teaches us in a life story form is amazing and very educational. Even for those not in the Spa industry the story line keeps you interested and might make you want to join the Spa industry.
Mr. Williams makes it easy to understand and to follow a very easy read for those of us that have very little time.

The author has taken very complex business strategies and woven them into a story that makes "The Reluctant Spa Director and the Mission Dream" an easy read. By doing this he has the opportunity to first outline the business problems before showing you the solution. The story line holds the readers interest and is well thought out.

This book is just ok. I wanted to read about marthas life and why she is such a rude and arrogant person in real life but this author takes it to a new level. He over dramatizes the whole entire book. This book would have been half the size if he left out his own fantay additions to the book. I am not a fan of Marthas and would never stand up for her but this author is better at fantasy than he is fiction.
Disingenuous and unkind.......2006-02-08
Chris Byron's schtick is to pretend to be a friend of Martha Stewart, but tell her story in the most cruel light. No friend would write a book like this. Hence, from the start one feels he is disingenuous while trying to establish his cred.
I am probably the one person in America who knows almost nothing about Martha Stewart, but Byron's account assembles such a string of digs that before long it gave me the feeling of being stuck in an elevator where someone had vomited. Why subject yourself to this? I skipped ahead a few times trying to find a different tone, but the guy continues his vicious ways while feigning disinterested storyteller, and I finally had to throw it down.
I do not understand this writer's motivations for such unkindness.
This book makes me wonder about the value of all such book. By what standard is a book considered a good book? Does it inspire us? Yes, it is well researched and well written... but so are so many others. This book is disrespectful to a fellow human being and for what purpose?
With so many other books in my reading pile, I have to skip out and move to the next.

Another book written by a man judging the success of a woman.......2005-11-15
I found this book to be informative in the respect that it was not a "tell all" but instead an attempt to deliver accurate information. However, while the author tells the reader that he is a neighbor and friend of Martha's he also gives a critical review of how her busness took it's toll on her personal life. The only reason this is done is because Martha is a woman and so is expected to devote time to her family and run an empire at the same time, Of course this is not something expected of her male counterparts, Just as asking Martha about her hysterectomy is not something asked of bussnessMEN. As for some reviewers here who state that she is everything they hate about women, thats a good thing because I don't think Martha is looking for a date from you anytime soon.
What this book does show is that Martha is able to overcome many problems to create an empire out of idea's that the old boy's network envy. Afterall, how dare Martha become one of the richest and most successful business woman in America by putting a value on what women do?

Yeah I see all these women defending Martha Stewart, because basically they think it's OK to be a mean bitch as long as it makes you a lot of money and gets you where you want to go. This is the lifestyle they aspire to, apparently, to be a bunch of greedy ballcrushers who enjoy the finer things in their spare time. Welcome to the evil side of women.
Anyway, this is a pretty good book. I liked "Just Desserts" better, but this book was written later, so it has additional dirt on Mothra, such as the time she deliberately injured a neighbor's gardener with her car. I would like to know if she is still terrorizing and abusing her employees after getting out of jail. It just makes me sick that a horrible, abusive person like Mothra would be so successful. I despise her so much. She is everything that I hate in women: aggressive, greedy, grasping, vicious, controlling - always must have everything her way. It makes me sick that women continue to buy her products. It shows me they don't care if she's a mean bitch. They probably like it. That's probably what her fans are. Not all women are bad, but I really hate the bad ones with a passion and I don't take any of their garbage when I meet them.

Incredible Principles and soon to be a major movie.......2002-11-28
The book--a true story--has incredible principles even though it is not well written. It was hard to put it down. The author showed how creativity could spring forth amidst horrendous cruelty, starvation, and isolation when military prisoners of war forsook their own selfishness and began help others. It not only saved their own lives, but because it gave purpose to their otherwise hopeless situations, an environment was fostered that gave true hope and purpose in their existing situations. TO BE RELEASED AS A MAJOR MOVIE DECEMBER 6TH 2002 IN LA.
The Gospel Lived Out.......2002-08-27
The book traces the transformation of the author's life and the life of the Japanese POW camp in which he was incarcerated. It is a beautiful book. The Japanese created an environment in which each prisoner lived for himself in a desperate struggle to survive. As a result, life was cheapened, prisoner stole from prisoner and many lost the will to struggle to live. Then, as if from no where, isolated acts of great courage and sacrifice arrested the camp's slide into hell. Men began to ask the question if there was some purpose to life beyond self. Groups formed to discuss the question. From that emerged groups who began serving others. The answer they discovered was that Jesus Christ had suffered much like they were suffering and yet was able to serve others and ultimately die for their sin. The camp was transformed. Men used their talents to serve their fellow prisoners. It is an incredible read.

What is religion?.......2002-06-20
I really liked the first half of this book. In fact I was saying to myself, "Boy, this is a GREAT book!" The second half I found boring.
I bought this out-of-print book because I had read the obit of Ernest Gordon and thus introduced to a bit of what occurred in the prison of war camp. It seems like if you get within an inch of death and manage to survive, then you get true religion. This phenomenon interests me and for some reason I like to read about a person's real experiences. I guess it lessens my fear of death. When Peter Sellers died and was revived, I recall that he said he would never fear death again. But when someone tries to extrapolate these experiences into some sort of philosophy it always -in my mind- seems to fall flat. The purpose of life is to get on with it, no matter how purposeless it seems, but near death experiences seem to help me deal with the getting on with it.

I was privileged to know the author of "Through the Valley of the Kwai", Rev. Ernest Gordon, for many years. Ernest Gordon died January 16, 2002. He has always been and will forever remain my hero. His story, first published in 1962, was republished in the 1980's as "Miracle on the River Kwai" and will enter its third printing February 2002 under yet another title, "To End All Wars". It is a powerful and moving first-hand account of how faith, love, fellowship, and the enduring human spirit transcended the unthinkable horrors and hatred of war and transformed the hearts and lives of men on both sides of the battle line. After recently attending Rev. Philippe Girard's book about the chaos and utter hopelessness of Haiti makes for mesmerizing but disheartening reading. It seems that for 200 years, Haiti has been plagued by voodoo-like bad luck. Haiti's slaves may have staged the first and only successful uprising against one of the most brutal (French) occupations, but this did nothing to improve their lot. But as Girard makes clear, international racism is NOT the cause of Haiti's never-ending troubles! Haiti's problems are directly due to the unspeakable ineptitude and corruption of political leaders who expressed utmost contempt for the very people they were elected to Govern. Papa Doc Duvalier may have been one of the most vicious dictators, but he was in fact just one in a very long line of political leaders who have systematically stripped Haiti of whatever potential it once had. Sadly, Haiti now seems forever destined to retain its status as the poorest, most desolate nation in the western hemisphere.
Girard splendidly details Haiti's history from colonial to present-day. He writes of Haiti's entangled and complicated racial history, the abdication of the French, the contempt that the remaining ruling class of mulattoes (of mixed race and lighter skin) had for their illiterate and ill-informed darker-skinned countrymen; the US occupations; the unrelenting exploitation, pollution and pillaging of land, resources and foreign aid; the brutal repression, violence and callous indifference of politicians to building an infrastructure that would allow the country to advance from an antiquated rural-based economy to one more modern and service-oriented.
I was expecting to receive a thick, heavy history book--one that is usually issued in high school or college, but I was pleasantly surprised to find that this book is a very SLIM volume and a very quick read, the better to showcase Mr. Girard's beautifully concise and lively writing style. I highly recommend this book to anyone remotely curious (as I was) about why Haiti continues to be the pariah of the carribean. "Paradise Lost" is a real page-turner, worth every penny and more!
Provocative and informative.......2005-12-23
This is likely to be the most ground-breaking book on Haitian (or even Third World) history in a long time. Refuting the tired "this is the white imperialist's fault" that is still the Haitian mantra 200 years after independence, Girard shows that the disastrous rule of Haitian dictators like Duvalier and Aristide is the main reason why Haiti is such a mess today.
