3 out of 5 stars SICKLES --MORE THAN INCREDIBLE.......2007-10-10

ONE BIOGRAPHER OF DANIEL SICKLES THINKS "INCREDIBLE" IS TOO KIND A WORD FOR THIS POLITICIAN/GENERAL. AS A GENERAL HE RANKS WITH MOST OF THE POLITICAL GENERALS OF THE CIVIL WAR--POOR AT BEST. THE MOST INTERESTING FEATURE OF SICKLES LIFE IS HIS POLITIAL AND PERSONAL LIFE AND THIS AREA SWANBURG RELATES VERY, VERY WELL. SICKLES TRIAL FOR THE MURDER IN LAFAYETTE PARK OF FRANCIS SCOTT KEYE'S SON FOR SEX WITH MRS. SICKLES IS THE MOST FASCINATING. SICKLES WAS SUCH A FOREMOST POLITICIAN THAT HIS DEFENSE ATTORNEY WAS THE ATTORNEY GENERAL OF THE UNITED STATES. HIS TRIAL MAY HAVE SET THE PRECEDENT FOR THE NOT GUILTY BY REASON OF INSANITY PLEA. THE BOOK OFFERS A VIEW OF THE POLITICAL MACHINES IN THEANTEBELLUM AND WAR YEARS, AND LEANS SOMEWHAT TOO FAVORABLY TOWARD DAN SICKLES. HOWEVER, IT IS STILL A BOOK WELL WORTH READING AND HAVING FOR PROFESSIONAL HISTORIANS AND THE READING PUBLIC.

5 out of 5 stars Human Rights Activist & Flagwaving Patriot!.......2003-11-26

Just wanted to note some of oft-ignored qualities of Daniel E.
Sickles.... Most folks want to focus on his alleged military
ineptitude in the Civil War (and at Gettysburg in particular) or
"The Trial of the Century," when Sickles was tried for murdering
his wife's lover. Sickles spoke in favor of the cause of freeing
Cuba from the yoke of Spanish colonial oppression in the years
after the Civil War, and he was always a patriot - at least he
favored the U.S. government instead of secession in the great crisis!

4 out of 5 stars An Incredible Life.......2002-05-19

There are few characters in history, let alone American Civil War Generals, as controversial as Daniel Sickles. That his story remains so obscure defies explanation.

W.A. Swanbergýs book opens with perhaps the most notorious chapter in Sicklesýs long life, the killing of his wifeýs paramour in the shadow of the White House and the first use of the temporary insanity defense in American jurisprudence.

I expected the remainder of this book to be anticlimactic and was gratefully disappointed. Swanberg is admittedly an exuberant fan of Sickles, perchance affording him more credit than his due, but the amazing facts of his life seem to deserve more attention than other historians have provided. A man of obvious contrasts, Sickles was a Tammany Hall politician who made it his duty to bring down Jay Gould and his cohorts because he loathed their corruption. The confidant of many presidents who presented his prostitute/mistress to the court of Queen Victoria and the Civil War General who is given equal credit for winning and losing the battle of Gettysburg.

Though somewhat dated, especially in itýs respectful treatment of someone who doesnýt always deserve it, there simply isnýt a more entertaining or complete depiction of Sickles incredible life.

5 out of 5 stars Sickles master politician!!.......2002-05-05

If Daniel Sickles doesn't represent the master politician in this outstanding book about him, I don't know what would. This book definately gets to the details about the man's polictical and military careers. Swanberg writes about Sickle's early polictical organizing in Washington, his affairs with women, family, constructing a New York brigade and leading it to battle. If that is not intriguing enough, Sickle's story is also covered when it came to killing the man who was having an affair with his wife and how Sickle's polictical clout sets him free from prosecution. As much as his personal and polictical career is covered, his military career is as well. Swanberg's coverage how he organized, fought and defended his positions regarding his III Corp movement at Gettysburg is excellent which seemed to only cloud this already controversial character. As I read this very informative book, I couldn't believe the amount of lies, deception and self-importance this man had. His master plundering of others and fouled attempts to mask his true character is wrenching yet fascinating at the same time. Swanberg captured me in this book and I couldn't let it down. I feel it is probably the best book on Daniel Sickles out there.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastically interesting.......2002-04-18

Daniel E. Sickles was born in New York City 20 Oct 1819, served three terms in the House of Representatives, and died May 3, 1914. This account of his life, tho it has no footnotes and no bibliography, is written in a breezy style that easily captivates. I was tremendously caught up by the story. It begins with the account of how Sickles killed Francis Scott Key's son on Feb 27, 1859, then goes back to the beginning and tells the whole fantastic, incredible story of his life, with lots of attention to his Civil War career, including his role at Gettysburg. As Horatio King wrote in Sickles' old age:
"I see him on that famous field,/ The bravest of the brave,/ Where Longstreet's legions strive to drive/ The Third Corps to its grave./ The fight was bloody, fierce and long,/ And Sickles' name shall stay/ Forever in the Hall of Fame/ As he who saved the day."
Sickles was a despicable character and yet his life is a fantastic saga. An excellent book.

      Book Description

When Frank Turnbull came from Toronto to join the staff of the Vancouver General Hospital in 1933 as a brain surgeon, he automatically became Chief Neurosurgeon because he was the only one in the province. When he retired at 81 he was among BC's most distinguished physicians, in sharp contrast to his early years, when regular physicians considered neurosurgery something of a pseudo-science on the outer fringe of serious medicine. Turnbull shudders now to think of the operations performed before the advent of antibiotics or decent anaesthetics, but marvels at the advancement he witnessed over six decades of practice. In his book he relates many fascinating stories about his encounters with the mysteries of the human brain, as well as dealing with the larger issues in the development of modem medicine.

5 out of 5 stars Health Behavior & Health Education, a good buy.......2007-09-30

Good book for a class on Health Behavior and Health Education Theories. Good for graduate level work. Theories broken into chapters. Each chapter has the theory history, significant time line for the theory, chart and descriptions of the constructs, and examples where research has used the theory effectively. Examples in book make use of the theory more understandable.

1 out of 5 stars Not a very appealing text.......2006-04-19

Chapters are disjoint at times, with no reference to similar concepts between them. Almost as if they were all written separately without any editing to tie them all together.

Information is presented in something less than an interesting manner - it's pretty dry!

Although I've just made one recipe from this book so far, I love this book. It is very easy to follow...and is GREAT for beginners like me. I had no idea what lemongrass looked like and this book provided the picture and info on it...ditto for kaffir lime leaves. The recipes in here are the popular ones at restaurants we all like.
The pictures in the book are gorgeous...each recipe has its own picture!(always a plus in my opinion)
P.S: I made the hot and shour shrimp soup....the aroma was something I've never across before.....tres exotic :)

5 out of 5 stars Opinions about quilting books. . ........2006-08-26

I took this book out of my library and plan to buy it. I think it's inspiring; I love the quilts and they make me think about ways to vary them. I enjoy the historical information. The book is a bit sketchy in its' isntructions in places. If one is a rank beginner, it might be frustrating. I'm an "endless beginner"; have never mastered finer points of patchwork and quilting and probably never will. Technical quilt piecing wizardry has never interested me.

I love Kaffe Fassett's books and this book, to me, is almost an American version of what he does; nothing really tricky, but good use of simple forms and materials to create impressive and generally bold quilts.

I've been looking to expand my collection of quilting books and find the reviews interesting; I suggest taking them all with a grain of salt. Everyone has their own taste. One persons' boring quilt is another persons' masterpiece.

            5 out of 5 stars Old quilts, a treasure.......2002-01-14

I have been a quilter for more than 20 years now. At first I taught myself how to cut fabric and piece it together, but in the eighties more and more books came on the market, and I could learn new techniques all the time.

When you quilt you also want to read about quilt history, and among alot of great books on the market Pieces of the Past by Nancy J. Martin is a treasure.

Nancy J. Martin knows what she is talking about when she talks about quilt. A quilter and collector for years she is one of the women in USA that knows most about both old and new quilts. She and her husband were the founders of That Patchwork Place, a "book paradise" for quilters.

Pieces of the Past has three parts. The first part is about history of qults patterns, colors and fabric in the United States. The second part, written by Martin's friend Marsha McCloskey show us how to make contempraru quilts, and the third part is a pattern collection of many traditional quilts.

This book is helpful for both new quilters and more advanced ones. It is filled with photos of old and new quilts, and is a treasure for every quilters home and book shelf.

This is a great book--lots of valuable information, pictures, and info and different species of bonsai. Practical.

            5 out of 5 stars outstanding.......2003-05-21

I think this book is excellent. Although the trees are native to Europe, most of the advice applies perfectly to people in temperate North America. Scots Pine, yew, spindle, beech, hawthorn, apple, willow etc... all species are covered in detail with info on training, pests, propagation, etc.... Definitely not just for Europeans, anyone in the Eastern U.S. and most of Canada will find this very useful. Great photos, too!

This is an excellent -- and useful -- book for those who wish to use native trees for their bonsai. However, to get the best benefit from it, you need to live in Europe, since the 'natives' are from that continent.

Covering every key technique and style, plus cultivation, maintenance, and display, these right-from-the-beginning basics go from root to leaf to bud—the entire lifecycle of a tree. In large, close-up photos, see how they grow, and how to buy and propagate them from seed or cutting. Trim, shape with wire, repot, root prune, and do summer pinching. Most spectacular are the displays, shown in detailed pictures, with information on preparing them, including choosing a pot. Successfully nurture a micro-forest on a slab; a simple, but wonderfully effective raft planting; a dramatic tree with its roots wrapped around a rock; and other breathtaking bonsai.

One person left 3 of the same 5-star reviews on this book. This reeks of a person being a shill. I wonder if they are connected with the authors? I was thinking of ordering this book for my wife. I think I will pass now.

              4 out of 5 stars Very Informative.......2005-08-24

This book is very detailed in letting you know about the pros and cons of Progesterone vs. Estrogen. I found it to be very informative and actually am following the progeterone protocol and am having positive results. It was just good to know that what I was going though was not menopause but perimenopause and its not such a scary word once you know what it is all about. I would recommend this book to anyone interested in finding out the truth about what estrogen (estrogen dominance) can really do to you if you do not get the correct info. from the right sources.

              5 out of 5 stars It's your hormones.......2002-08-23

This book is one of my most shared title's to understanding your body and your hormone balance.

Martin included contributions by doctors, M.D. or PhD, who have done the research and clinical work to prove this book is on topic and more helpful than the majority of 'women's books' out there, including a popular female M.D. I get the feeling she doesn't know the difference between natural and synthetic progesterones...which don't have the same effects...and the synthetic has nasty side effects.

When your hormones are balanced you don't need meditation, and you discover your 'toxic' relationships that contribute to your hormone imbalance are easier to 'detoxify.' When you feel good, those around you feel better too.

A good starter book for someone who is now experiencing female 'problems' and wants a real answer instead of useless medicating and surgery. Don't miss checking out constributors, Dr. Peat and Dr. Lee's personal websites. In that order.

              5 out of 5 stars InnerSelf.com review.......2001-12-30

As more and more people become aware of the dangers of synthetic hormone replacement therapy, they turn to alternative health and natural remedies for solutions. Raquel Martin's revised and expanded edition of her book "The Estrogen Alternative" takes these concerns to heart and offers practical solutions for women whether it be for menstrual cramps and PMS, menopause, or just plain feeling "sick and tired".

The author speaks from experience and years of being immersed in the findings of natural hormone research. The information she presents is based on studies by MD's, as well other noted authorities. She also lists resources to assist women in correcting deficiencies that occur before, during, and after menopause, using natural means and botanical hormone replacement therapy.

The book takes a look at circumventing osteoporosis, the risk of cancer, progesterone deficiency, estrogen, hormones from food sources, anemia, cholesterol, miscarriages, and more.

It's a woman's "mini-bible" as it addresses most of the concerns for the health of our body as women -- synthetic vs. natural; breast cancer; menopause; and various other "female-related" physical challenges.

The appendix section offers addresses for sources of natural progesterone, a recommended reading list, resources for cancer patients, and ways (and comparisons) in applying hormones.

The Estrogen Alternative is a very informative book, helping to give women back the power to make their own decisions without having to depend on a medical doctor to impose decisions that may not be in keeping with the woman's way of life. It's a great book for you as a woman, and it's a great book to give to the women in your life. Power is in knowledge and this book presents a lot of both.

                      Book Description

An engrossing guide to the final resting places of Britain and Ireland's most famous, infamous, and legendary figures. ``Michael Kerrigan's engaging romp through the tombstones of Britain and Ireland is the inescapable conclusion to a modern preoccupation.'' The Scotsman Who Lies Where is the final chapter in the lives of Britain and Ireland's most famous citizens. It is also an intriguing companion to the world of the dead in all its quirkiness, character, variety, humor, and pathos. With tales from London, Edinburgh, and Dublin to the sacred sites of Glastonbury and Bardsey Island, and with visits to such famous graveyards as Highgate and the Necropolis of Glasgow, Michael Kerrigan reports on the deaths, last wishes, and burials of a vast array of notable figures down the ages. Michael Kerrigan's previous book is The Wit and Wisdom of Jane Austen. 424 pp 5 x 8 b/w photos throughout
