An Incredible Life.......2002-05-19
W.A. Swanbergýs book opens with perhaps the most notorious chapter in Sicklesýs long life, the killing of his wifeýs paramour in the shadow of the White House and the first use of the temporary insanity defense in American jurisprudence.
I expected the remainder of this book to be anticlimactic and was gratefully disappointed. Swanberg is admittedly an exuberant fan of Sickles, perchance affording him more credit than his due, but the amazing facts of his life seem to deserve more attention than other historians have provided. A man of obvious contrasts, Sickles was a Tammany Hall politician who made it his duty to bring down Jay Gould and his cohorts because he loathed their corruption. The confidant of many presidents who presented his prostitute/mistress to the court of Queen Victoria and the Civil War General who is given equal credit for winning and losing the battle of Gettysburg.
Though somewhat dated, especially in itýs respectful treatment of someone who doesnýt always deserve it, there simply isnýt a more entertaining or complete depiction of Sickles incredible life.

Operating on the Frontier: Memoirs of a Pioneer Neurosurgeon
Frank Turnbull Manufacturer: Harbour Publishing ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback ASIN: 1550171372 |
Book Description
When Frank Turnbull came from Toronto to join the staff of the Vancouver General Hospital in 1933 as a brain surgeon, he automatically became Chief Neurosurgeon because he was the only one in the province. When he retired at 81 he was among BC's most distinguished physicians, in sharp contrast to his early years, when regular physicians considered neurosurgery something of a pseudo-science on the outer fringe of serious medicine. Turnbull shudders now to think of the operations performed before the advent of antibiotics or decent anaesthetics, but marvels at the advancement he witnessed over six decades of practice. In his book he relates many fascinating stories about his encounters with the mysteries of the human brain, as well as dealing with the larger issues in the development of modem medicine.

Old quilts, a treasure.......2002-01-14
When you quilt you also want to read about quilt history, and among alot of great books on the market Pieces of the Past by Nancy J. Martin is a treasure.
Nancy J. Martin knows what she is talking about when she talks about quilt. A quilter and collector for years she is one of the women in USA that knows most about both old and new quilts. She and her husband were the founders of That Patchwork Place, a "book paradise" for quilters.
Pieces of the Past has three parts. The first part is about history of qults patterns, colors and fabric in the United States. The second part, written by Martin's friend Marsha McCloskey show us how to make contempraru quilts, and the third part is a pattern collection of many traditional quilts.
This book is helpful for both new quilters and more advanced ones. It is filled with photos of old and new quilts, and is a treasure for every quilters home and book shelf.

It's your hormones.......2002-08-23
Martin included contributions by doctors, M.D. or PhD, who have done the research and clinical work to prove this book is on topic and more helpful than the majority of 'women's books' out there, including a popular female M.D. I get the feeling she doesn't know the difference between natural and synthetic progesterones...which don't have the same effects...and the synthetic has nasty side effects.
When your hormones are balanced you don't need meditation, and you discover your 'toxic' relationships that contribute to your hormone imbalance are easier to 'detoxify.' When you feel good, those around you feel better too.
A good starter book for someone who is now experiencing female 'problems' and wants a real answer instead of useless medicating and surgery. Don't miss checking out constributors, Dr. Peat and Dr. Lee's personal websites. In that order.
InnerSelf.com review.......2001-12-30
The author speaks from experience and years of being immersed in the findings of natural hormone research. The information she presents is based on studies by MD's, as well other noted authorities. She also lists resources to assist women in correcting deficiencies that occur before, during, and after menopause, using natural means and botanical hormone replacement therapy.
The book takes a look at circumventing osteoporosis, the risk of cancer, progesterone deficiency, estrogen, hormones from food sources, anemia, cholesterol, miscarriages, and more.
It's a woman's "mini-bible" as it addresses most of the concerns for the health of our body as women -- synthetic vs. natural; breast cancer; menopause; and various other "female-related" physical challenges.
The appendix section offers addresses for sources of natural progesterone, a recommended reading list, resources for cancer patients, and ways (and comparisons) in applying hormones.
The Estrogen Alternative is a very informative book, helping to give women back the power to make their own decisions without having to depend on a medical doctor to impose decisions that may not be in keeping with the woman's way of life. It's a great book for you as a woman, and it's a great book to give to the women in your life. Power is in knowledge and this book presents a lot of both.
