Book Description
Powerful testimonies of Evangelicals who became Catholic These eleven personal conversion accounts are unlike any you've ever read. They're packed with biblical, theological, and historical proofs for Catholicism. Each year thousands of atheists, Evangelicals, Mormons, Fundamentalists, and Pentecostals are being surprised by Catholic truth and these converts tell you why. In his foreword Scott Hahn described his reaction to "Surprised by Truth":
"While reading each of these incredible journeys I laughed, cried, grunted affirmations, and basically relived my own journey into the Catholic Church. I heard echoes of my own struggles in their words. I relived the anguish I experienced on that lonely and sometimes frightening path of conversion, and I relived the deep, abiding joy of coming home. But enough, Read these stories. They're prayerful, heavy-on-doctrine, evangelical, scriptural witnesses of people who discovered that what they had once thought was the most 'unbiblical' church is really the Church of the Bible."

Maybe you will be surprised.......2007-05-01
Conversion stories are always enjoyable to the faithful but generally short of convincing to the committed detractor. But, the fact that our minds are generally closed does not mean we cannot know that our minds are closed and attempt to give each witness his or her due attention. Give it an open-minded hearing and enjoy the enthusiasm of a fresh understanding and respect for scripture and fellow believers. Serious Protestants and Catholics alike are bound by the love they preach to share with each other. But how can one share if no one listens? Listen and be renewed with their stories. You too may be surprised by truth.
wonderful.......2007-04-11
this book was wonderful for me to read. It reconnected me with why I am Catholic. If you have any interest in why people are Catholic even if you have no desire it is a good book to read. I think that there should be more understanding as to why people choose the faith they do. This book does that.
Good for a shot in the arm.......2007-03-31
Conversion stories are always a fun read, when one is reading the stories of those who convert to their own faith.
Of course, when the conversion is one away from one's own tradition, that is another thing entirely.
However, fair is fair, and evangelicals have been publishing and telling conversion stories about how people were "saved" from the Catholic Church since the beginning of their movement some 400 years ago. It is remarkable therefore that some would criticize these humble and powerful stories of people who "swam the Tiber" in the other direction as "triumphalist" (whatever that word means) or inappropriate. Yet that is exactly what many evangelicals have done regarding the renaissance in Catholic apologetics that has occurred over the last 20 years.
However, in my opinion, this renaissance is neither "triumphalist" in a negative sense, nor inappropriate. For, in theology, the only way to get at the truth is to use the time honored tool of philosophical reasoning when discussing Divine Revelation. That means making arguments from Sacred Scripture. Arguments invite counterarguments. Reformationists reject the authority of the Church to settle arguments when they get out of hand, or threaten unity. Therefore, we will continue to argue with each other, even while we often work side by side in the trenches fighting things like abortion and so called "gay marriage."
This book clearly shows that ideas have consequences, especially when those ideas are religious ones. Every person whose story is in this book is someone who had the courage to not only challenge received "dogma" but also live their life in a way in conformity with their ideas, regardless of the consequences.
Luckily, these brave individuals were not building their houses on the sand of their own understanding, but rather on the rock of Jesus Christ and the teachings of His Church.
This book and its companion volumes are a great tool when one needs the support they provide. They are also useful for explaining to reasonable non-Catholics why people would find the Catholic Church a place to call home.
I struggled with whether to give this book series 4 or 5 stars. As collections of conversion stories go, these are excellent. However, conversion stories are monologues, not dialogues, and are therefore less interesting to me than a good discussion of various theological issues. I feel good editing and inclusion of other ideas (perhaps a commentary?) could have addressed this weakness to some degree. However, fair is fair, and most other faith traditions (especially Fundamentalist Protestantism) don't extend the same intellectual courtesy when discussing the conversion stories of those who chose to leave the Catholic Church.
At the very least, these books prove that the Catholic faith is compelling, and reasonable. I, of course, believe it to be true. However, until He comes again, I fear that debate will continue. When we are Christian it will be a good discussion. When we fail, it will be shouting match. Such is the Christian experience post the reformation.
Pretty Satisfying Answers to Tough Questions.......2007-03-23
These stories get to the point on the toughest questions that I've always wanted answered by Catholics and provided me with answers that are more satisfying than what I've traditionally heard from protestants on these issues. (Actually, anything would be more satisfying than the answers I've been given relating to James 2:24.) The authors of the stories represent a good cross-section of denominations, but since there are so many, I've already started reading SBT 2.
Truth plain and simple!.......2007-01-11
I have read and re-read the Surprised by Truth books, and always seem to learn something new. The converts to Catholicism in these books include former Protestant ministers, which is always so interesting to see how someone so steeped in Protestant doctrine comes to the fullness of truth. This is a very good read for anyone who wants to learn more about the Catholic faith by reading personal testimonies of others.
Book Description
A unique reflection by a psychiatrist on his former marriage to a patient with Borderline Personality Disorder, and the disturbing effects on the relationship.
Borderline Personality Disorder has levels of prevalence, social dysfunction, health care utilization, and chronicity that make its public health significance similar to that of other major psychiatric disorders such as schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, or major depression, yet it has not received comparable attention. The Courtship Dance of the Borderline is an important statement that will enhance public consciousness about a disorder that is universally recognized and widely discussed within mental health circles. Never before has Borderline Personality Disorder been so intimately explored and detailed from the perspective of a spouse. Now a psychiatrist recounts his relationship with a sufferer of the condition, and the complex issues that arise in the relationship.

Walker's a Little too Self-pitying.......2007-05-30
When a young med school student ("Walker") decides that a young, attractive woman who had just attempted suicide needed love, he was correct. "Michelle" needed love, but she more desperately needed help. Like many borderline females, Michelle is unbelievably sexy, impulsive, full of rage, childlike, and incredibly needy. Because of his misguided and naive attempts to save her, her rage, self-doubt, and hate mushroom. Walker is overmatched and Michelle's unrelenting suicide attempts and physical attacks nearly destroy him. The story is gripping; but, worse, it is pathetic. Walker makes little effort to understand Michelle, to participate in her therapy, or to get her to see a better psychiatrist. His "love" is weak and amounts to nothing more than fearful placating. I don't know what horrified me more, his limitations or her rage. Walker unabashedly places the blame on Michelle - who was too mentally ill to controll her behavior. A far better book is Rachel Reiland's account of her recovery from BPD, "Get Me Out of Here." Rachel's psychiatrist is an astounding physcian and healer. He never allows Rachel to manipulate or intimidate him -- and he is committed to making her well. Where Walker leads the reader to believe those with BPD are forever consigned to hell, Rachel's psychiatrist leads her to heaven.
Surviving a relationship with a borderline personality.......2006-12-04
Please note that this book is now being published under a new title: The Siren's Dance: My Marriage to a Borderline: A Case Study by Anthony Walker.
In the story you will meet a young doctor who gets caught up in a whirl wind romance with a young beautiful patient after a suicide attempt. He is deeply attracted and fascinated by her but completely unprepared for the full force of the dark side of her personality. The book offers no solutions but if you have anyone in your life who you even suspect of being borderline personality then you should buy this book.
Even though the case of borderline personality described in this book is mild I still think that the book is an excellent example of the general behaviour of the borderline personality and the affects on those that love them. This book will help you understand the common behaviours of borderline personalities. Buy this book and know that you are not alone and that you are not to blame.
The book is absolutely invaluable in helping you realise that you are not alone. Many people feel very alone when in relationship with someone who has borderline personality simply because they can not talk to anyone about their relationship because other people can not relate to the behaviour of a borderline personality because it is so far removed from reality. Here at last you will find someone who understands what you are going through and can "talk" to you through this book.
Borderline personalities are often in denial about having borderline even after receiving a diagnosis they will usually vacillate between blaming you and complete denial and only very rarely evening admitting that they even have a problem. If you suspect that someone in your life has borderline but you are not sure then buy this book and find out. After reading this book you will be know if the person in your life has borderline or not because the `evidence' presented in this book is simply overwhelming.
Excellent Book on BPD.......2005-11-02
Excellent book. I'd highly recommend it to anyone who had a relationship with someone with BPD. I had the misfortune of getting involved with a woman with BPD and almost lost my sanity. These people are like children, following their impulses, having no sense of a stable self. In my experience the woman with BPD changed from one mask to another, depending on whom she was with. At times she was very sweet like an angel, then at other times she would turn into a raging monster. She had numerous affairs and she lied about them. She appeared happy at one moment and then she'd get really depressed. She'd also accuse me of things I haven't done. Getting immersed into the world of someone with BPD can be a real nightmare. I'm glad that there are books like this, helping people to identify it. People with BPD appear interesting, charming and exciting until you get too close. Then they react with rage and accusations. And I had to deal with all sorts of lies and manipulations, becoming more isolated and depressed. I hope this book helps others understand what BPD really is and help all involved in the healing process.

Too many errors and full of fluff.......2005-09-25
When a novel has errors it loses its credibility and I stop dead in my reading track.
On page 94 and 95 of the hardback copy, the couple goes to a laundry and proceed to fight. Suddently the laundry contains article from their apartment, which they demolish as they fight.
Mistakes continue on pages 127 where the author/doctor's younger sister, credited with the first college diploma in his family, died at the age of 22. Did he not receive a diploma?
Age-related errors continue on page 137.
AS far as its BPD content, the novel is fluffy.
It was like reliving my marriage.......2005-06-11
I have to start out by saying that I am not neutral with regards to borderline personality disorder. Like the author, I was married to a person who suffers from this disease. Reading this book was very eerie for me because it brought back a lot of memories and experiences which I had mostly managed to forget. For me, the biggest take-away was being able to hand the book over to a friend or family member so that they could understand just a bit what it was like to live with a borderline -- the spiraling descent into madness, and the slow crawl out. The author had the advantage of clinical training and expertise and was STILL drawn into a relationship which, at the very least, derailed his career for a couple of years. Your average person on the street is much less well equipped to deal with mental illness. If you are stuck in a relationship with a borderline, giving this book to friends and family may help them to understand how you got into this mess and why it is so hard for you to get out. If you are the parent or sibling of a loved one who is clearly enmeshed in a bad relationship or marriage and can't seem to get out, this book may help you understand why.

Rocky Rocks.......2003-09-11
This is a great book. It tells or shows a lot of information on the movie and the play. It gives you some of the script, some of the words to the songs, and among other things. This is a fabulous book, well, if you like The Rocky Horror Picture Show.
A Great Book!.......1999-09-17
It's a great book, it tells about the stars and everything
Practically everything you need to know.......1999-06-18
This book is great.I couldn't put it down.It is divided into 4 chapters (it was great when it all began, superheroes, I didn't make him for you and music/lyrics) Although a bit dated, it is still great for fans of the stage show and movie. The photos and b/w pictures are great and there are also cast biographies and descriptions of the characters Buy it today! (even though it's out of stock!)
Useful but SEVERELY out-of-date........1998-11-18
This book is good for someone looking for basic information about "The Rocky Horror Picture Show", but most if not all the information on the "Rocky Horror Experience is severely out of date.
The pictures are very good, but be careful if you want to use them as a reference for costuming. There are several transposed images, most notably the photo of Riff and Magenta in their "spacesuits".
Good book - some great pictures, but not too much new........1998-02-02
This book has great pictures, including some of the shooting scripts, but doesn't necessarily tell you anything that you don't have online. If you want a text compendium of info from RHPS, this is a great book.

Within just a few years, The Rocky Horror Picture Show grew from an oddball musical to a celebrated cinematic experience of midnight features and outrageous audience participation. This study tells the extraordinary story of the film from initial reception to eventual cult status. Uncovering the film's non-conformist sexual politics and glam-rock attitude, this volume explores its emphasis on the theatrical body (tattooed, cross-gendered, flamboyant), and its defiant queering of cinema history.

Acceptable, basic.......2005-04-11
The title is misleading. Obviously, there are no secrets in this book. It is just a good introductory summary on small business / self-employed tax savings.
If you plan to run a business from your home, this book is a good, basic, simple introduction. However, it does not add much from the several IRS publications. Even some examples are the same encountered in public documents. But the book puts it all together for you. It even lists the relevant IRS publications and tells you how to obtain them.
The book brings simple information although it is not always successful in presenting it in a simple way. The book is acceptable and deserves 3 stars, but you should check other books before investing your time on this one.
If you want a simple overview, this is the book for you. However, if you want a more detailed book, you may try "Working For Yourself: Law & Taxes for Independent Contractors, Freelancers & Consultants" by Stephen Fishman. I did not read it, but found its table of contents at Amazon and thought it was much more detailed and well organized. It is 2 or 3 times larger and seemed a more serious book.

Scientific Curiosity.......2006-11-06
This book is meant for the reader who himself possess some knowledge on electrical theory, mechanical ability and the desire to further his knowledge about Nikola Tesla's inventions. Even tough the book addresses some events about the scientist life the narrative is very concise with a quick overview on these occurrences which have been covered extensibly and in detail in other books about Nikola Tesla. I recommend this book to those readers interested in the classical turn of century approach to electrical devices and their applications. Diagrams, plans and the accompanying legends and information abound for those with this interest in mind.
Lackluster.......2006-04-30
The author gives a decent overview of some of the most interesting inventions made by Tesla. Sadly, it only shows patent diagrams, and no other pictures of Tesla's inventions.
Chapter 9 seems pretty fanciful. In it he references about three other books for his evidence, but the books he cites are not scholarly sounding. I've come across them before in book stores and quickly skimmed them, which is why I have that impression.
Fantastic Synopsis of Tesla's Fantastic Inventions.......2006-04-17
This book by Nikola Tesla is a good recount of all of his inventions and an overview of them, however the detail is somewhat lacking. It has almost all of his inventions and ideas in it, but there is very little explanation and detail describing them. This can be good when trying to get a good overview of what Tesla accomplished, however if you are trying to get detailed and informative information about these I recommend going and getting a better source after this book because it is nothing more than a good introduction to the nature of his inventions and patents. If you have any background in the field of electricity than these sketches and brief overviews will be no problem to you and you will understand them, but if you have no background than understanding the nature of these will be quite difficult. Nonetheless, this book was still really fun to read and study, the relaxed nature of it allows it to be a fun book to read and learn from without reminding you that it is still a book. Overall, I would say this is a good book to have, especially for the price, the overview it provides is incomparable and it serves as a great introduction to Tesla's life.
Virtually Useless.......2005-04-26
Please do not waste your time with this book.
Yes, it does have many of the "Fantastic Inventions" of Nikola Tesla in it, but there are only pictures of the patent drawings with no explanations offered.
Some facts are present. Some outright fables are present also.
In summary, Mr. Childress cobbled together this book and seeks only to divest you of your money. You won't learn anything of substance.
Instead, purchase and treasure, "Wizard: The Life and Times of Nikola Tesla" by Marc Seifer. See my review for this book.
this book is..........2003-02-15
i was given this book read it and was sad telling my best friend who understands my fascenation with tesla how bad this book is do not buy this book. if you have access to a collection of patents by tesla so much the better.

Book Description
These pieces of cloth and metal symbolize the daring, bravery, suffering and loss of men who flew in deadly aerial battles for democratic freedom. Eagles Recalled, Pilot and Aircrew Wings of Canada, Great Britain and The British Commonwealth 1913-1945 has already been hailed as the definitive work written on the subject. Designed in a comprehensive form, complete with issue dates, this publication of original and authentic insignia will appeal to curators, cataloguers, historians, collectors, as well as veterans. It contains more than 800 color, and black and white photographs and is supplemented with uniform illustrations. Much of the material contained in this publication has never been seen before by the general public. The author has also made new historical discoveries presented here for the very first time - he has accessed private collections, photographed rare museum acquisitions, and received support from historians in seven countries over a period of some ten years. This work brings to readers a detailed and comprehensive study of the brevets issued to aviators who fought with Great Britain in World Wars I and II. Warren Carroll has been a collector/ researcher for over thirty-five years and is a member of the Organization of Military Museums of Canada. He is considered one of the leading authorities on Canadian and British Commonwealth Air Force insignia., over 800 color and b/w photographs, 8 1/2" x 11"

A well researched and illustrated book.......1999-07-25
This is a well researched and illustrated book. A very worthy study of Canadian and other Commonwealth aircrew insignia. The author obviously has a wide experience in researching and collecting in the subject and the coverage of particularly Canadian insignia is excellent. As an Australian, I found the treatment of Australian aircrew badges is very good as he consulted appropriate Australian museum authorities. The only criticisms I have are minor. In dealing with naval aircrew insignia, the author gives the impression of not understanding the rather complex British wartime treatment of 'temporary' naval personnel - they were enrolled in the Naval Volunteer Reserve, with different rank lacing on uniforms to regular officers e.g. 'wavy' stripes as opposed to straight stripes on the uniform sleeve. As almost all Commwealth navy aircrew were temporaries, they wore the wavy stripes. Although illustrations of these appear in the book, this explanation is not given. The other, more humorous (hardly a criticism) is the illustration of first world war Royal Naval Air Service Flight Lieutenant E. Stoneman on page 45, in his uniform, together with a lady who looks very much like his mother (or a close relative as facial features are similar). She, of course is dressed in female attire of the time. Our ever exact author specifically identifies the Lieutenant as the person standing on the left of the photograph! As I said, very minor criticisms. A very good book on the subject
Book Description
The purpose of this text is to introduce concepts for studying relationships between states and markets. The economy and the state are thus analyzed as networks of relationships between principals and agents, each occupying a particular position in the institutional structure. The book then analyzes systematically the effect of the organization of the state on the functioning of the economy. It isolates the conditions that trigger government's positive or negative responses to the economy.

Excellent guide.......2006-03-07
This is a really nice but quite demanding book, specially if used for working alone since many derivations are omitted. Nevertheless, it is very clear in the substantive exposition and motivation of each formal model. I find it very helpful as a guide for a full semester course in Political Economy both in Economics and Politics Programs.
Great Little Book.......2004-12-04
This is a short-but-sweet little primer on contemporary scholarly thinking on political economy. It is based on the author's class lectures, with each chapter having a list of supplemental readings for those who wish to learn more. This book, if supplemented by some of listed readings or a "core" text on political economy, such as Mueller's Public Choice III, could serve as a good base text for an undergraduate or graduate-level class on political economy. The book is amost ideal for teaching.
Amazon.com
The authors make the case, after serious study--including Rathje's archeological analysis of landfills over the years as the director of the Garbage Project--that recycling, while not a bad thing, has limits and will not truly solve the problems of waste production and resource depletion unless other patterns of consumption and use are changed. The key, in so many words, is to use less stuff to begin with!
A concerted effort to reduce consumption coupled with the creative reuse of materials are truly the only long-term solutions. Readers are given a wide range of simple activities that will help reduce the use of raw materials and resources, such as turning down the heat before a party (allowing the guests to generate their own heat), buying highly concentrated forms of products like juice and detergents to minimize packaging, using Web pages to post notices rather than flyers, and simply leaving unused hotel amenities for the next guest.
Although they give an extensive list of practical suggestions, perhaps the authors' main service is to encourage a way of thinking about resources that translates into significant lifestyle choices with a consciousness of resource use, thereby permitting the reader to devise his or her own simple techniques and strategies to use less, waste less, reuse materials, and conserve raw materials and energy in their own creative ways. This is a very practical book filled with tips and techniques, but it is also a very hopeful book, showing people how to work in a daily way to conserve resources and help the environment. --Mark A. Hetts
Book Description
Q: What do all of the previous civilizations that practiced recycling have in common?
A: They're extinct.
Let's face it. Recycling has its limits. But so does our Earth. As environmentalists Robert Lilienfeld and William Rathje explain, the answer to our twenty-first century garbage crisis is both simple and practical--use less stuff. At the office: Donate or sell old office equipment
At school: Post announcements on a school Web site
In the great outdoors: Bring magic markers to your picnic so guests can label their cups and plates
And many more!
Start a war on waste and help save the planet!
Customer Reviews:
Novel approach.......2003-12-02
The authors of the book argue that as good as recycling is, reducing the amount of resources we consume is even better. The second half of the book is mostly ideas on how to do so.
Unlike most of the "cheapskate" books out there, with silly ideas such as "take the bus instead of driving", "don't shower every day", "become a vegetarian", and "replace your lawn with a rock garden"; the authors suggest that reducing consumption doesn't mean reducing your standard of living or changing your life.
The novelty of this book is that seemly environmentally unfriendly advice such as "go ahead and run your car with A/C", "throw the 10lb worth of paper away instead of driving your car to the recycling depot", "buy prepared convenience food instead of fresh produce if you don't have the time", and "buy smaller packages instead of bulk if you can't use it all" is actually more ecologically friendly than their sacred cow alternatives.
Overall, this book is enjoyable because it suggests lifestyle ideas that will maintain or increase quality of life, while still being good for the planet.
Great Ideas and Entertaining Reading.......2000-01-19
Check out this different approach to the subject of environmental awareness. The authors do a unique job of educating and influencing while providing you with good, easy-to-implement ideas, and entertaining perspectives. I've used ideas from it in my day-to-day life, shared learnings with others, and used it as a tool in my work with corporate America in the area of reaching employees with the whole life approach to environmentalism...at work and at home. This book goes far beyond recycling to looking at our earth from a sustainable development perspective -- a perspective we'll all benefit from considering.
