Book Description

In 1994 William Ritter's adult son committed suicide, sending Ritter and his family on a journey no family wants to take. Part of Ritter's own process of healing the loss of his son was to preach about it occasionally from the pulpit. This book is a collection of the sermons he preached, the first one just three weeks after his son's death, and the final one nine years later. Through them, we get a glimpse of a father and a family struggling honestly with their pain and gradually—over the years—coming to grips with their loss.

Take the Dimness of My Soul Away will be a welcome companion to anyone who has lost a loved one to suicide, as well as to pastors and counselors who work with those who are grieving. Ritter offers no easy solutions, no rosy pictures, and no silver linings, but speaks honestly instead about the difficult emotions and confusion of this kind of loss, and ultimately, about a sense of hopefulness for the survivors of suicide.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars For All Who Have Suffered Loss.......2004-12-08

Although Reverend Ritter bases his book on sermons given after his son committed suicide, his words are relevant for anyone who is experiencing the agony of loss and at any stage of the journey. This small book is honest, powerful, comforting, and hopeful.

      Book Description

This book represents a new way of thinking about Australian cinema by asking where the origins of the new film lie. It begins by tracing the indebtedness of Australian cinema to the classical narrative style of Hollywood filmmaking, with its firm grasp of melodrama. Several films are studied in detail within this framework, including Picnic at Hanging Rock, Blood Oath, The Empty Beach, and Shame. The book continues by comparing the problems faced by "high" British cinema of the 1940s and 1950s with those faced by Australian cinema of the 1970s and the 1980s in the attempts by both countries to establish national film industries. Many parallels are drawn between the responses of British and Australian cinema to the overall dominance of Hollywood, despite the thirty-year gap between these two periods of filmmaking.

for games 3 to 5 very extensive and well detailed, with very few errors, however I felt prima cheated me as i needed the book for M&M2 and there is nothing in the book about 1 or 2 as if i remember correctly the book states they are so old no one has them any more (I have them on my C-128)

        1 out of 5 stars useless.......1999-08-19

It's really tragic that people want to make money with something like this - and even more tragic that other might actually shell out money for it.

1 out of 5 stars A joke or a great book depending on what you want........1998-06-16

I had ordered this book for hints and tips on Might & Magic 2, because, as the title says, it's the "Authorized Strategy Guide to Games I-V". But when I got the book, I soon found out that they put games 1 and 2 into a small TWO PAGE summary. There were no hints, no clues, no solutions, and there was NO HELP for either 1 or 2. So this book was USELESS!

GMAT scores are an important part of any graduate business-school application, so you need to perform well. Suzee Vlk, long time test-prep specialist and author of several Dummies books, can help. The GMAT for Dummies is packed with useful information and strategies to help you prepare for the test. The book includes advice on how to use the book efficiently (Vlk estimates you'll need 28 hours to work through it), review chapters for all three sections of the exam, and two complete practice exams. Two chapters focusing on the analytical writing assessment portion of the exam will help you write effective essays--and remind you that schools differ regarding the importance of this section. Vlk also offers special advice for "computer illiterates" worried about taking this computer-based exam. In familiar Dummies style, Vlk includes a handy tear-out "Quick Reference Card" with a summary of the most important information and a "Part of Tens" section with "10 Dumb Things You Can Do to Mess Up Your GMAT" and 10 relaxation techniques to use before and during the exam. With its witty writing and helpful icons in the margins pointing out important information, The GMAT for Dummies makes test preparation easy and relatively painless. --C.B. Delaney

5 out of 5 stars This new edition is completely different and much bettter!.......2007-02-27

The previous reviews must be about an earlier edition of this book because I thought it was an excellent study aid for the GMAT. There were no typos that I could see, and the material was right on relevant to the way the questions are presented on the GMAT test.

The book was easy to read and actually (gasp!) made studying for the GMAT enjoyable. The practice test seemed to be at the same level as the actual GMAT, not harder and not easier.

This is a great prep tool. Check out this new edition by new authors. You won't be disappointed!

4 out of 5 stars GMAT for Dummies.......2005-10-03

        4 out of 5 stars GMAT Dummmies.......2005-09-14

I think it is a great book especially when you had a lot of the material from highschool; I think it really breaks down the subject matter which is good because it is at your own pace. I recommend it!

4 out of 5 stars Great book, for what it is.......2004-01-26

This is a great book if you only take it for what it is meant to be: a starting point. I purchased this book to begin studying for my GMAT with no intentions of it being the only book I would use. The book does an excellent job of explaining the GMAT in general and does a great job teaching to the writing portion of the test. The math review and verbal review are good places to start, but unless you are very strong already in these areas, you will likely need another book to complement this one. I think this is an excellent book and is certainly a much better read than any of the other GMAT prep books I have used.

2 out of 5 stars Too light in content to be useful.......2003-01-27

Quite frankly this is a difficult test. Typically the ... For Dummies books do a great job in giving information on a subject. This book treats the subject matter too light. The publisher did not catch the many errors in mathematical formulas, and if this is your only reasource, your not going to do well. The first two chapters that explain basic information about the test, do an excellent job. The book looses ground quickly at that point and in the end does a poor job in preparing you for the exam if this is your only source of studing for the exam.

        4 out of 5 stars SmallBizBargains.com gives it a moderate thumbs up........2003-10-05

As mentioned in other reviews, this is not the reference that will substitute for doing an MBA program. However, for those of us that need a quick reference to a variety of topics, this book fits the bill. We at SmallBizBargains.com often refer to it when giving simple advice for basic business issues. It definitely covers a broad range of topics - from Accounting and Finance to Marketing, and even Negotiation Skills. Again, not for the advanced academic, but a good resource for a lot of basic information.

2 out of 5 stars Does not cover basic cocepts from an MBA program.......2002-07-15

I have an MBA and I was looking for a basic reference book that would cover some of the information that I had learned. This book does not cover two of the most basic concepts that every student learns during their MBA program: NPV & IRR (net present value and internal rate of return)

I recommend "the complete idiot's guide to MBA basics." That book covers more of the calculations that one learns during an MBA program.

Another thing to note: the above-mentioned books should only be used as a quick reference book. If you really need to understand a concept, then you need to find a subject matter book for that topic. For example, there is no way to truly understand the 5 p's of marketing by reading 3 to 5 pages. You need to grab a marketing textbook and read couple of chapters that cover the 5 p's of marketing. Then, you can use "idiots" or "dummies" books as a reference guide.

5 out of 5 stars Great business resource - One of the best!.......2001-07-06

I suspect that trying to jam everything you ever wanted to know about business but were afraid to ask is a difficult task, even when you've been given 400 or so pages to complete your task. One thing I know for sure, the authors of The Complete MBA for Dummies have done a far better job completing this task than any other business book I've ever read (and I've read a LOT of business books!). Kathleen Allen and Peter Economy really know their stuff, and it shows loud and clear on every page of this extremely well-written and comprehensive book. While the tone is humorous (fun, actually), it never veers onto the thin ice of sillyness that plagues other books of this type.

If it's covered in a typical MBA program, you'll find the topic you're looking for here: dealing with change, information technology, global business, strategic planning, management, leadership, motivating employees, recruiting and retaining high quality employees, building teams, accounting, finance, marketing, negotiation and much, much more. Lots more interesting (and up to date) than any textbook you'd ever buy in an MBA program, and far less cost. This book packs a heck of a bang for the 16 or 17 bucks you'll pay to buy it.

        Highly recommended.

4 out of 5 stars Agree with other about being over-rated.......2001-06-21

I find that there are some good points to be made within the book, but the overall rating is only about a 3.5 (I gave them the benefit of doubt with the 4 stars)

The only truly good information came in at the sales and marketing, but I have yet to see the idea of the customer is the boss in any business course (I have three degrees in business related fields). And I have never seen any manager or executive with this philosophy. Even here in the book I think they could have done this simple idea more justice.

I also have to say that I have read about 20 of the "For Dummies" books, and this one is in the bottom few for quality.

3 out of 5 stars Does not Live Up to the 5-STAR Rating.......2001-03-26

This Book is overly rated with 5 stars. So far, I have read the 10-day MBA, this book and the Idiot equivalent. I read these introductory books because of my job and before going into more advance books. I have found this book less useful than the ten-day MBA and the Idiot equivalent. Moreover, I believed that some of the chapters are long-winded. I will only give it 3 stars.

A good look at the life of a cowboy in Montana and Wyoming in the late 1800's. Not politically correct by any stretch. Not very well put together but a very interesting read.

4 out of 5 stars Review of "We Pointed Them North".......2006-08-29

Americans have been fascinated with our early "wild west" history and much has been written about it in books, movies and TV series. I think most of us realize that most of that "history" has been fictionalized in the interest of entertainment. I find it enlightening to read honest, unvarnished and first hand accounts of that early west and discover just what hardships were endured by the hardy folks who lived back then. This book pulls no punches with glorification, and includes the "down and dirty" events and roughness back then. But you surely put the book down at the end with an appreciation of the endurance, patience, humor, honesty and "make do" attitude of these early cowboys, cattle men and settlers. The book tells of actual associations with some familiar, historical characters, which is more entertaining than fiction for the reality of it. I would recommend this book to anyone who appreciates reading genuine, first hand "out west" history (and those who love a good yarn while doing it).

4 out of 5 stars A great read. Great stories........2005-03-13

I very much enjoyed this book. A very conversational style. The parts about Billy the Kid (a small portion of the book) seem a little out of place and forced, because they are not first person accounts, like the rest of the book. Those parts are interesting, just not as engaging as his first-person accounts. I enjoyed that he tells the reader that his motivation in writing is to make a few bucks!

5 out of 5 stars Another one for the "Lonesome Dove" bookshelf. . ........2003-10-10

This is an as-told-to memoir of the early years of a cowboy who grew up in Nebraska and drove cattle along the western trails, settling in Montana, where he worked for several cattle owners, all during the 1870s and 1880s. His story covers that brief period of time when the West was open range, before settlers began putting up fences. It's a story told in the 1930s by an old man to a woman from the East, Helena Huntington Smith, who had the presence of mind to capture his life in the printed word before his generation had passed completely (Abbott died in 1939).

Teddy Blue, as he was called, was something of a rip-tearer in his youth, living up to the wilder stereotype of rangeland cowboys, by his own account. On the one hand, there is the fierce recklessness of herding cattle, which through accident and various mishaps took the lives of many young men. And then there is his life in town, befriending prostitutes, drinking hard, shooting up saloons, and on occasion riding his horse indoors.

His favorite job is working as a "rep" for cattle-owners, going to the regular roundups where cattle were sorted and branded, requiring him to retain a vast knowledge of brands used on the range and other markings. For a while, he works for stockman Granville Stuart, who headed up a vigilante effort that significantly reduced the number of active cattle rustlers in Montana. Stuart eventually becomes Abbott's reluctant father-in-law, after the young penniless cowboy takes a shine to one of his daughters.

The book rambles back and forth in time as Abbott more or less free-associates for Smith. And while scholars may question the accuracy of his memory at points, he was easily one of the more widely known figures of the old West for his personality and antics, not to mention having befriended the likes of cowboy artist and writer Charlie Russell, as well as Calamity Jane, even crossing paths with Teddy Roosevelt. His story makes an enjoyable read and evokes with feeling those early "innocent" days of an adventurous youth lived when the West was young as he was. His admiration for the Cheyenne Indians is, he admits, unusual for a white man of the times. And though they were both the best and worst of times (e.g., the crippling winter of 1886-87), he shares with Charlie Russell a nostalgic belief that they were the good old days, the likes of which haven't been seen since.

I recommend this book to anyone interested in cowboying and the old West. It is full of stories and yarns, social history, frontier customs and mores that make that time come alive with an immediacy and intimacy that are seldom found in records of the period.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful stories. "Recollections of a cowpuncher.".......1998-09-30

Helena Huntington Smith took down Mr. Abbott's stories, organized them, added useful footnotes, and succeeded in her part "to keep out of the way and not mess it up by being literary." I have read a few other fine stories told by western men and women. None were better than these. If you are interested in the history of the west from one white man's perspective, this is an excellent place to find it. In several stories he mourns the destruction of the societies that were in the west before the european invasion. While he is clearly a child of his time, he is remarkably senistive (for his day). Altogether a fine book. I recommend it highly.

                          E. C. Abbott was a cowboy in the great days of the 1870's and 1880's. He came up the trail to Montana from Texas with the long-horned herds which were to stock the northern ranges; he punched cows in Montana when there wasn't a fence in the territory; and he married a daughter of Granville Stuart, the famous early-day stockman and Montana pioneer. For more than fifty years he was known to cowmen from Texas to Alberta as "Teddy Blue." This is his story, as told to Helena Huntington Smith, who says, "My part was to keep out of the way and not mess it up by being literary."

Reminisces of Forts Sumter and Moultrie

Abner Doubleday was an 1842 graduate of the U. S. Military Academy at West Point and a veteran of the Mexican War when he was assigned to Fort Moultrie in the summer of 1860. A Captain of Artillery, he served as second in command of the garrison at the historic fort when the curtain rose of the dramatic events leading to the outbreak of the war between the states. Doubleday also had the distinction of aiming the first cannon fired in response to the bombardment of Fort Sumter.

From letters, memoranda and documents, Doubleday writes of his own recollections of the turbulent days of 1860 and 1861. "This Charming Story , by a then captain of artillery inside the two forts, is a memoir of merit because of the aura of its immediacy and intimacy." Nevins, Allen. "Civil War Books: A Critical Bibliography. Vol 1. Baton Rouge: LSU Press 1970. Pg.27

Abner Doubleday presents a unique account from the Union side of the events leading up to and including the bombardment of Fort Sumter in Charleston Harbor, which ignited the American Civil War. His first-person details from inside the garrison are hard to find elsewhere. He was such a staunch Unionist that he recalls being the only officer of the garrison in favor of the election of Lincoln. He continually protests against what he saw as the inaction of his own commanders and higher echelons. He felt that the Rebellion could have been nipped in the bud, had proper action been taken. From the foregoing, it should be apparent that sympathizers of the Confederacy will disagree with Doubleday on many points. I should point out that there is only limited evidence that Abner Doubleday had anything to do with the invention of baseball. He did, however, earn a Congressional Medal of Honor at Gettysburg.

Just the facts, Ma'am. Wouldn't it be nice if we could simply inspect the historical record and resolve the question of whether or not Tibet has traditionally been a part of China? Melvyn Goldstein, anthropologist and Tibet specialist, takes us in that direction in The Snow Lion and the Dragon.

The results? Not so fast. Like a scientist analyzing experimental data, Goldstein walks us through centuries of unending political struggle and battles of conquest. He shows us that Tibet first came under Chinese suzerainty during the Mongolian era and then for almost 300 years during the Manchu era. For the most part, The Snow Lion and the Dragon succeeds as chronicle of the power plays of two governments vying for control of Tibet.

But when Goldstein speaks of the Chinese government, what does he mean by "Chinese"? Does he mean the Mongols when they controlled the territory we call China and the Manchus when they did? Were these legitimate Chinese governments?

Although Goldstein is sincere in his objective methods, many questions such as these lurk behind the illusion objectivity. Ultimately, history is interpretation, and without admitting this, Goldstein lures the reader into a false sense of complacency.

The Snow Lion and the Dragon is a helpful historical summary for anyone who wonders how the Tibet Question has played itself out from the beginning up until 1997, but for an adequate examination of historical subtleties surrounding the issue, we must continue to wait. --Brian Bruya

                                Book Description

Tensions over the "Tibet Question"--the political status of Tibet--are escalating every day. The Dalai Lama has gained broad international sympathy in his appeals for autonomy from China, yet the Chinese government maintains a hard-line position against it. What is the history of the conflict? Can the two sides come to an acceptable compromise? In this thoughtful analysis, distinguished professor and longtime Tibet analyst Melvyn C. Goldstein presents a balanced and accessible view of the conflict and a proposal for the future.
Tibet's political fortunes have undergone numerous vicissitudes since the fifth Dalai Lama first ascended to political power in Tibet in 1642. In this century, a forty-year period of de facto independence following the fall of the Qing dynasty in 1911 ended abruptly when the Chinese Communists forcibly incorporated Tibet into their new state and began the series of changes that destroyed much of Tibet's traditional social, cultural, and economic system. After the death of Mao in 1976, the rise to power of Deng Xiaoping quickly produced a change in attitude in Beijing and a major initiative to negotiate with the Dalai Lama to solve the conflict. This failed. With the death of Deng Xiaoping, the future of Tibet is more uncertain than ever, and Goldstein argues that the conflict could easily erupt into violence.
Drawing upon his deep knowledge of the Tibetan culture and people, Goldstein takes us through the history of Tibet, concentrating on the political and cultural negotiations over the status of Tibet from the turn of the century to the present. He describes the role of Tibet in Chinese politics, the feeble and conflicting responses of foreign governments, overtures and rebuffs on both sides, and the nationalistic emotions that are inextricably entwined in the political debate. Ultimately, he presents a plan for a reasoned compromise, identifying key aspects of the conflict and appealing to the United States to play an active diplomatic role. Clearly written and carefully argued, this book will become the definitive source for anyone seeking an understanding of the Tibet Question during this dangerous turning point in its turbulent history.

4 out of 5 stars Good introduction by preeminant Tibet scholar.......2007-05-29

If you're looking to start diving into the mire of the Tibet Question, then this is the place to start. Don't rely on obviously biased materials from people with vested interests like the PRC or even the FREE TIBET campaign. They have agendas. Goldstein, however, is one of the best western scholars on Tibet. He knows Tibetan language and culture well, and this book is a very concise (read: incomplete) intro to the historical realities of the political dimension of Tibet today.

The book is short enough to not be daunting, and written well enough to hold one's attention and be understood thoroughly. No blathering about useless tangents and side points. I read it long ago, and it was a great jumping-off point to further research.

Further reading on the subject would include some of Goldstein's other books like "A History of Modern Tibet", as well as Tsering Shakya's "Dragon in the Land of Snows" and Barry Suatman's collected volume "Contemporary Tibet" which contains some good chapters by folks like Robert Barnett and other Tibetan and Chinese scholars.

This is where the real information is. Don't start with biased material. By all means read that stuff, but start with something that will give you a relatively neutral picture first, then judge for yourself.

Probably Melvyn Goldstein could not write something irrelevant about Tibet even if he wanted to, but here he comes unexpectedly close. This booklet is based on an "occasional paper" and it feels. This said, it still worth reading, but some distracted and vaguely cynical remarks leave an unpleasant aftertaste.

Bear in mind that my background in Chinese and Tibetan history and politics is negligible. And that the fate of the Tibetan people is being considered. That said, this seemed at least a very readable account. I assume the historical facts in this book can be cross-checked for accuracy. As to Goldstein's analysis (done before 1998) of the future, he explored possibilities for compromise that, to date, seem not to have occurred. He also expresses concern about the possibility of further violence if an adequate compromise is not reached.

When looking into the Tibetan problem, I found primarily decidedly pro-Chinese or pro-Tibetan positions. Compromise may seem unreasonable. Since Goldstein appears to be trying to find a middle position, this book may be useful for anyone trying to get a less biased view of this issue. The presentation seemed clear enough that it could serve as an introduction to this issue, although it may well also be of use to readers with a more advanced background in this area. Goldstein seems to be primarily offering input and not conclusions, so whatever your position on the Tibet issue, this book may be informative.

There is no easy solution to an issue as complicated and intricate as the "Tibetan Problem". As much as I abhor the human right abuses in Tibet (which the author does too, apparently), I agree with Prof. Goldstein that the Chinese are really those who hold the trump card. I believe that if the exile government were to accept some sort of comprimise that will actually allow them to work INSIDE Tibet, their chance of achieving a genuine autonomy and preserving the Tibetan culture will be much enhanced, at least from a long term perspective. Important as the much publicized demographical change in Tibet is, one cannot neglect the elements of materialism that is continuously being brought into Tibet. As a friend of mine from China pointed out half mockingly, all that the communists have to do is to build more entertainment establishments to promote indulgence of sense pleasure among the younger generation. That in itself will be a huge blow to the preservation of a genuine Tibetan culture. Thirty years from now, if the exiled are still in exile, the situation will be grim. Time will be running out on a peaceful solution -- China will be substantially stronger, the nationalistic pride of an average Chinese will be stronger, the frustation of the Tibetans who support arm struggle will no more be contendable, and the Dalai Lama will probably no longer be there to represent a voice of peaceful struggle which will anyway have its credential debunked by then. As Prof. Goldstein pointed out, many opportunities for continuous negotiation had been squandered by misjudgement and misperception on both sides, I pray that when the door of negotiation is reopened, more subtantial results will be made.

5 out of 5 stars Goldstein makes clear the political realities of the Tibet Q.......1999-08-08

In our own time, Tibet has been a de facto province of China since 1951. Where was the moral character of the U.S Congress and the executive branch of our government when China began its pacification of Tibet? Goldstein gives the American public (at least those who bother to read serious work) a dose of morale corruption that our government lives by, and a sense of the complexity of international affairs, which we as a people, have always played a bit to lightly.

                                    Book Description

Water and land interrelate in surprising and ambiguous ways, and riparian zones, where land and water meet, have effects far outside their boundaries. Using the Malheur Basin in southeastern Oregon as a case study, this intriguing and nuanced book explores the ways people have envisioned boundaries between water and land, the ways they have altered these places, and the often unintended results.

The Malheur Basin, once home to the largest cattle empires in the world, experienced unintended widespread environmental degradation in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. After establishment in 1908 of Malheur National Wildlife Refuge as a protected breeding ground for migratory birds, and its expansion in the 1930s and 1940s, the area experienced equally extreme intended modifications aimed at restoring riparian habitat. Refuge managers ditched wetlands, channelized rivers, applied Agent Orange and rotenone to waterways, killed beaver, and cut down willows. Where Land and Water Meet examines the reasoning behind and effects of these interventions, gleaning lessons from their successes and failures.

Although remote and specific, the Malheur Basin has myriad ecological and political connections to much larger places. This detailed look at one tangled history of riparian restoration shows how—through appreciation of the complexity of environmental and social influences on land use, and through effective handling of conflict—people can learn to practice a style of pragmatic adaptive resource management that avoids rigid adherence to single agendas and fosters improved relationships with the land.
