5 out of 5 stars Walking into the Wind, reviewed by ML Chandler.......2002-05-28

Although written as a journal, Walking into the Wind is more than a diary. Through the days -- good and bad for Barbra with lupis symptoms lurking in the background -- we find a woman who decided to look for silver linings. She demonstrates God's grace to see beauty, be inspired, find hope and enjoy wholeness, whether "well" or not.

Those whose life journey includes physical and/or mental challenges will discover in this book new ways of loooking, new ways of thinking, and perhaps, the Giver of all life itself.

5 out of 5 stars You won't put it down.......2002-03-07

What a wonderful, candid book! Barbra Goodyear Minar so transparently shares her experiences about living life in spite of dealing daily with chronic disease. Since I don't live with the challenge of a chronic disease or disability, I wasn't sure how the book would affect me. In truth, it is a refreshingly wonderful view of living a great life in spite of challenge. We all face challenges, living life as imperfect beings in an imperfect world. But we can, no we must, choose everyday to get up and move forward when we've been knocked down. It is our choice whether to live in joy with a positive attitude regardless of our circumstances. Barbra shares her journey, both the joy and the struggle, in a refreshing, candid manner that is encouraging and relatable. You can see how, despite her significant health challenges, her daily habits of walking with God, choosing joy, getting up when knocked down, going forward instead of playing the victim, have produced great fruit in her life. I have been encouraged to re-examine my attitudes and habits, to choose joy and be thankful despite any circumstance and to seek a closer walk with God. A great read!

5 out of 5 stars Living Over the Circumstances.......2002-02-18

Barbra Minar's latest book will not disappoint those who have come to know and love her work. In Walking Into the Wind, she again shares her heart in every paragraph. Using her own journal entries and correspondence with friends, she reveals her day-by-day struggle as a wife and mother dealing with the effects of the disease that invaded her body on her honeymoon. Chapter after chapter we watch her achieve victory over the depression that often accompanies chronic illness. When my own daughter was diagnosed with the same condition, Systemic Lupus Erythematosus, we found great comfort in the shining optimism of one who had been there. Chronic illness seems more widespread than ever, affecting friends, neighbors and members of our extended family. I'm grateful to this author for a book I can recommend to help and encourage them. Walking Into the Wind is an inspiring read for anyone, but especially one challenged by such an illness.

In an October 2000 article, "Flash 99% Bad," usability guru Jakob Nielsen wrote, "About 99% of the time, the presence of Flash on a website constitutes a usability disease." Flash 99% Good: A Guide to Macromedia Flash Usability is a new look at the good and the bad of Flash today. Authors Kevin Airgid and Stephanie Reindel, a developer/designer and information architect, respectively, counter that, with a knowledgeable implementation of Flash, "form and function can coexist." Let's face it, there's a lot of indulgent Flash out there, and whether you're the client, the project manager, or a member of the creative team, you may want to read this before you start your next project.

The book is not really a how-to; it's more like a critique (or harangue) accompanied by screenshots (in color), personal asides, and interviews (for example, Adries Odendaal of the entrancing Wireframe Studio and even Kevin Lynch, Chief Software Architect at Macromedia). Topics include knowing your audience, creating clear navigation (including a usable "back" button), providing workable content (for example, enabling a print feature, bookmarking, Flash forms), accessibility issues, and the future of Flash. And there's a chapter-long case study of one of Airgid's designs (iconideas.com), which makes interesting reading. Makeovers are always fun.

The book is stridently opinionated. For example, they write, "Designers naturally rank color, shapes, and typography above information flow, usability, and download time." (If you're a designer you may "naturally" bristle at that remark!) Oddly, these reductive comments make the book more interesting, like a line drawn in the sand--you want to see how they prove themselves worthy of painting such blatant stereotypes.

And they manage that with lots of advice, some of which you'll adopt in your own work, some of which you'll scoff at, and some of which is already moot with Flash MX (for example, aspects of accessibility design). Flash 99% Good offers experience-backed insights, plenty of personal pet peeves, and expert interviews. You may not always agree with what they prescribe, but they'll make you think twice before you whip up your next Flash brainchild. --Angelynn Grant

4 out of 5 stars Why aren't all software books like this?.......2002-05-07

Great work! With my burgeoning experience in flash programming,
the authors have hit the nail on the head when it comes to relevant solutions to some everyday problems I've encountered while working on my own flash projects. The book is well laid out, easy to understand - and STRAIGHT TO THE POINT! I would recommend this guide to any flash user who needs good workaround solutions for their designs. (Cool cover, too!)

          4 out of 5 stars A book I really enjoyed.......2002-04-29

I've been waiting for a book that dealt with usability as it relates specifically to Flash for a long time now. I manage a web development team and am constantly having to address the issue of "should we or shouldn't we use Flash for this project...". While a good majority of this book simply confirms what I think I already knew, there are many parts of the book that bring up some really good usability-related points that I just hadn't thought of. I'll be using this book as a reference to refer back to when future issues arise on when and how to use Flash in our projects. Overall, I really enjoyed reading this book.

5 out of 5 stars Very nice, easy to read and understand.......2002-04-28

This book was an easy read, and very straight foreword. The examples helped me understand many of the mistakes I have been making in my own work. I was disappointed the book didn't come with a CD-ROM, but the book web site more than made up for it.

2 out of 5 stars not worth reading.......2002-04-12

this book really isn't worth buying. I am student in web design and have used flash on occasion. If you have never used flash before I recommend this book but for everyone else it doesn't tell you anything you don't already know. It's a small book for a heafty price, it could actually be cut in half because they repeat everything 3 or 4 times.

          5 out of 5 stars Bravo!.......2002-04-05

Flash 99% Good: A Guide to Macromedia Flash Usability is very helpful with navigation and design. The authors have made the book extremely readable...professional, but not so "techy" that a reader's interest is lost. Personal interviews target situations and thoughts that many have experienced. Summaries and fast facts at the end of the chapters provide valuable information in a clear, concise manner.

It's in an easy to read format. There are traditional games as well as lesser known games which are just as good. It's an absolute must for Youth workers and Teachers.

I bought this book this weekend and started reading it. It was in a nice display of "recommended" reading at the airport book store in Singapore. Having been in both IBM and E2open (Supply Chain software) and now Agere Systems.... no doubt in my mind - the value is clear. Implementation is complex with competing solutions and agendas. Issue is even in the same industry you have too many competing solutions. I noticed CAPS has been pushing the same themes. I liked the way you put it together and got it published.

I am currently focused on building a Supply Chain which is geographically located with the supply base. This is a huge advantage as Value Chains can not overcome the timezone - same day impact. The core advantages of key supplier relationship management are also local and can not be overcome by distance. If we can automate human behavior in these management sytstems the value chain will really gain speed.

5 out of 5 stars "Very good value": Book review from the "SCM Review".......2002-12-05

The title is a bit misleading: the book is about a lot more than redesign. Specifically it looks at the many processes and technologies associated with supply chain management. The subject matters covered run the gamut from the basics of supply chain management to supplier relationships to the fast-changing B2B landscape. The premise of educators Handfield and Nichols is that the more effectively you integrate these activities the more value you create across the supply chain. . . . The bottom line is that the pluses far outweight the minuses. The authors have a knack for explaining a range of supply chain concepts and techniques clearly. Just as important, they reinforce the discussion with real-life examples. Every major topic is introduced by a case study that sets the context for the discussion to follow. One final observation: From a cost-benefit standpoint, Supply Chain Redesign represents a good value in today's market. Very few books these days present this much worthwhile supply chain information for such a relatively low price.

I went to Jean Harris's high school in Cleveland, OH. Naturally, she was the biggest celebrity alumni ever produced and everyone knew and followed her story from murder to prison. Now that she's out of prison, and being that it's nearly 30 years later, maybe Jean feels differently about her actions. I feel differently about this than I did years ago. But her book now makes me just as angry as it did when I first read it years ago.

Jean Harris grew up as a young lady of privilage from an old fashioned world that seems like some distant fairy tale. I picture a world of cotillian balls, white dresses and gloves, cocktail parties, butlers, etc. She married and taught school for several years, eventually divorcing and becoming the head of an exclusive girls' school in Virginia. She becomes involved with a man named Herman Taunower, future author of the Scarsdale Diet and her victim in a botched murder / suicide.

She does a good job of laying the ground work for the crime. Being in such a position as head of a private school she was under constant pressure and working very hard to keep the machine running. Her relationship with Taunower was codependent and seemingly tempestuous. They were engaged to be married early in the relationship, but they both backed off, settling for a lifelong non cohabitational partnership. They seemed far from happy, despite their understanding. Herman was not faithful to her, and he made no secrets about it. Yet, Jean seemed to accept this. Her job took a lot out of her, and Herman was prescribing pills for her to keep going and calm her down. Soon she was hooked and had to keep going to him for more.

The straw that broke the camel's back for her was a combination of things. She had run out of pills, couldn't get a pharmacy to fill them, and had a discipline situation at her school. A few students were busted for pot, and she had to do something about it. The anger from the student population and conflicting sides was tearing her apart. And although she was well aware of his infidelity, she seemed to focus all her anger onto one of the "other women". She saw his office assistant as a trophy wife type, a bimbo not worthy of a man like Herman and not her equal. Read her suicide letter, about how she made references to "her t--- all frosted with chocolate" and things. Jealousy. That's all it is.

Killing Herman? Well, all I can say is that she shouldn't have done it. If she really wanted to kill herself, she would have done it. And she didn't have to do it in front of him. SHe would have gone off someplace and done it on her own time. I think she intended to kill him then herself. Otherwise why didn't she just DO IT? Instead she couldn't bring herself to do the deed to herself.

As for her time in prison, it's deserved. She killed the man, she should serve the time. But, we all know that prison isn't a pleasent experience. You are stripped of your dignity and privacy for the crime you committed, that's the price you pay. She made use of her time, educating and working while behind bars, instead of rotting away.

Now that she's been out for many years and left to spend her remaining years in seclusion away from the public eye and out of the slammer, maybe she regrets her actions. Free of her addictions, free of her jealousy, free of the man who caused all the problems, she probably has a different perspective. My mom said to me "a lovely lady like her shouldn't have been put away like that." I say "Well she shouldn't have shot the guy, she committed a crime." I hope her woman scorned routine was worth it, as she lost several productive years.

Jean Harris'"Stranger In Two Worlds" is a remarkable document of an upper middle class woman's experience in a state prison. Her descriptions of the circumstances and characters are colorful and tragic, and yet full of unexpected humor. She describes her fight to retain her dignity and gain dignity for young mothers in prison by founding an in-prison day care center so that inmates may remain connected, in a positive way, with their young children. I would recommend this book to anyone interested in the justice system, the prison world, or women's rights.

I was outraged at the anti Blaik, anti Army football theme of this man's book, always referring to the football team as "Brave Old Army Team". It's obvious a man with an axe to grind cannot write an objective book. I can define this book in three word's. This Book Stinks!!!

Army football would never be the same after the cheating scandal of 1951, which saw 37 players (83 total plus many firsties who got off the hook) expelled from the Academy, including Blaik's son. Blaik, under pressure from Douglas MacArthur, stayed on and rebuilt his shattered team. (Hear that Blackwell, rebuilt his shattered teams.) In 1958, Army led by Heisman award winner, Pete Dawkins, was undefeated. Dawkins would go on to become a national hero in Vietnam, as would another West Point football hero, Bill Carpenter, the so-called "lonely end."

Blackwell would have you believe that this was a "Football Scandal" Remember this Blackwell: A famous plaque at Michie Stadium bears a quote from Gen. George Marshall: "I want an officer for a secret and dangerous mission. I want a West Point football player."

Leave it to a "journalist" to opine, speculate, and exagerate an exceptional glitch in the Long Grey Line. Peee-uuu. Hold your nose.

4 out of 5 stars Great read for Flavor - but mistakes aplenty.......1997-09-10

The story gives one an accurate gut feeling of what it must have been to be a cadet 50 years ago - the presures of time, the constant stress. For this alone the book reads well.

However the book is replete with many errors - factual errors. It identifies one cadet as an arrogant plebe who "refused" to play the West Point game feeling that he could get away with things because he was a football star. This individual entered the Academy after the cheating scandal events related in the book.

The book misplaces events, places and dates. I recorded at least 21 such major errors. Eg. The PR spokesman for the Academy Sports Program was a man named Joe Cahill. The football coach in the late sixties and early seventies was also a Cahill. In the book they are misidentified as being the same individual.

One thing I miss in the book though is a good look at the Honor System and the pressures it put on the cadets. The thesis of this book is that the football coaching staff headed by Earl Blaik allowed the football team to pervert the honor system by emphasing winning. However there were cheating scandals at the Academy in 65 and in 77 that are well documented. Blaik in his reissued biography hinted at a large cheating ring that occured about 1956. None of these three cheating scandals can be laid to football's door. There is obviously something else that is operative at the Academy that lead to the cheating.

Dispite the errors this book is a good read - it really creates the flavor of being a cadet in an earlier generation

By the 1940's, West Point and football had become synonymous, with Head Coach Red Blaik wielding such enormous power as to distort the purpose of the institution and eventually to bring disgrace to the Long Gray Line. Winning, and the prestige it brings, became so important that organized cheating rings ran rampant and became almost casual, finally resulting in the expulsion of 83 cadets, including Blaik's own son.
Blackwell's very readable history of the scandal, based on interviews with those involved as well as official records, is also a good introduction to the life of the Point, and the history of college football.

                                              Product Description

In the early 1950s, the U.S. Military Academy at West Point stood tall as a bastion of national character, extolling the virtues of duty, honor, & country. The Army Team embodied the commitment to developing our country's strongest leaders, both on & off the gridiron. This book explores how America's deep-rooted obsession with college football & desire to win at all costs became a way of life for many of Coach Red Blaik's cadet-athletes. In Aug. 1951, big time football led to big time corruption when 83 cadets, most of whom were on the football team -- were expelled from West Point for cheating. The outcome of the scandal was to have a lasting impact on America's military.

                                                Book Description

The conventional wisdom holds that the president of the United States is weak, hobbled by the separation of powers and the short reach of his formal legal authority. In this first-ever in-depth study of executive orders, Kenneth Mayer deals a strong blow to this view. Taking civil rights and foreign policy as examples, he shows how presidents have used a key tool of executive power to wield their inherent legal authority and pursue policy without congressional interference.

Throughout the nation's life, executive orders have allowed presidents to make momentous, unilateral policy choices: creating and abolishing executive branch agencies, reorganizing administrative and regulatory processes, handling emergencies, and determining how legislation is implemented. From the Louisiana Purchase to the Emancipation Proclamation, from Franklin Roosevelt's establishment of the Executive Office of the President to Bill Clinton's authorization of loan guarantees for Mexico, from Harry Truman's integration of the armed forces to Ronald Reagan's seizures of regulatory control, American presidents have used executive orders (or their equivalents) to legislate in ways that extend far beyond administrative activity.

By analyzing the pattern of presidents' use of executive orders and the relationship of those orders to the presidency as an institution, Mayer describes an office much more powerful and active than the one depicted in the bulk of the political science literature. This distinguished work of scholarship shows that the U.S. presidency has a great deal more than the oft-cited "power to persuade."

                                                    Book Description

Long before Rachel Carson’s fight against pesticides placed female environmental activists in the national spotlight, women were involved in American environmentalism. In Women and Nature: Saving the "Wild" West, Glenda Riley calls for a reappraisal of the roots of the American conservation movement. This thoroughly researched study of women conservationists provides a needed corrective to the male-dominated historiography of environmental studies.

The early conservation movement gained much from women’s widespread involvement. Florence Merriam Bailey classified the birds of New Mexico and encouraged appreciation of nature and concern for environmental problems. Ornithologist Margaret Morse Nice published widely on Oklahoma birds. In 1902 Mary Knight Britton established the Wild Flower Preservation Society of America. Women also stimulated economic endeavors related to environmental concerns, including nature writing and photography, health spas and resorts, and outdoor clothing and equipment. From botanists, birders, and nature writers to club-women and travelers, untold numbers of women have contributed to the groundswell of support for environmentalism.
