The incredible strength of human will........2003-07-09
Mr. Kiba spins his incredible story of being shot down in the dead of winter with a group of airmen over North Korea during the Korean War. He was captured along with the other surviving airmen and taken into communist China as a political prisioner. The Chinese believed Stardust 40 invaded their airspace so the prisoners were not afforded the rights of normal POWs. With incredible detail he recalls his 2 1/2 years of starvation, interrogations, cruelty and "re-eduacation" by his chinese captors. He in detail remembers dates, recalls sightings of his co-captives, the trial where he was found to be a war criminal and the groups eventual release long after the war was over. I find his will to survive amazing as he fights to control even the smallest aspects of his life. The story is a true inspiration and is a great reminder that "Freedom is not Free". Kiba continues to fight for the rights of POW's up to this day. It's just sad his story took 50 years before it was printed.
Book Description
Dr. Richard Cattell became a major influence on hundreds of surgeons from throughout the world who came to the Lahey Clinic to study under Drs. Lahey and Cattell in the fellowship teaching program; many of these surgeons contributed material in this book. Dr. Cattell achieved recognition on a different level when he saved the life of England's Sir Anthony Eden, who had undergone gall bladder surgery that was botched. Richard B. Cattell was raised in Ohio and attended Harvard Medical School, where he impressed one of the faculty members, Dr. Frank Lahey, who invited Cattell to join Lahey's proposed clinic after his residency. Lahey's then-novel clinic concept grew and expanded, and Dr. Cattell was his surrogate son and successor. Mary Elizabeth Cattell ("Ginny") Dunmore, Dr. Cattell's eldest child, graduated from her mother's alma mater, Smith College. She specialized in preschool education, teaching and directing a nursery school for 25 years. She skillfully blends the story of her father's achievements around the globe with his private life with his beloved Agnes and their five children in their Newton and Duxbury, Mass. homes.

Customer Reviews:
Very helpful for those stressed with all that junk in your brain..........2007-08-16
I am 13 yrs old, and about to enter a BIG, very competitive HS, so you know how hard that can be. I was getting very worried about my memory, about how I immediately forget why I entered the room, etc., then i saw this book. I thought, well, let's see how this helps. As being a top notch college, I knew from first sight that this Harvard book would be good, but I never expected it to be so understandable at the same time. I took their little tests in the book and found a dramatic change. So just now, this book will really help.
There is a lot you can do to maintain your memory.......2006-05-13
If you are interested in this book, you are probably over 50 and are concerned whether your occasional memory lapses are normal or early symptoms of something serious. This book does an excellent job at fleshing out the difference between the two
However, the author explains there are two schools of thoughts. Some neurologists view memory deterioration on a continuum directly related to age. These view Dementia and Alzheimer's as almost inevitable if we were to live an extremely long life. A supporting statistic is that 47% of individuals 85 years or older do have Alzheimer's. Other neurologists do differentiate between normal aging and disease. They don't view Alzheimer's as inevitable.
The author advances many steps you can take to preserve your memory. Most of those are lifestyle driven to maintain a healthy cardiovascular system (eat fresh produce, avoid saturated and trans fats, take vitamin supplements, do lots of aerobic exercise). Indeed, what is good for the heart is very good for the brain. Brain fitness depends greatly on how well it is irrigated by blood vessels. The author also mentions behavioral steps to preserve memory. Those include becoming an active lifelong learner, remaining engaged in hobbies and community. He also mentions steps to improve your memory including using a PDA to log in daily schedule and using mnemonic techniques to remember grocery lists.
The book also reveals not so well known info. He shares a very long list of prescription drugs that do affect cognitive function. He also indicates that heart surgery, cancer, and cancer treatments can impact memory. He also indicates that vitamins C & E combined are as effective as prescription drugs in lowering the risk and managing early symptoms of Alzheimer's. He also does an excellent job at differentiating inherited risk vs genetic risk. It is not the same thing. You are at greater risk of getting Alzheimer's (AD) if your mother had it only if you also carry the gene Apolipoprotein e4.
Realize that there is much dissidence on the subject. We don't understand a whole lot about the brain. Experts have contradictory but equally well supported opinions. The author suggests that beyond doing all the right things you probably cannot delay onset of AD for long. Leading prescription drugs can manage and defer serious symptoms for just about 6 months to a year. Meanwhile, other specialists (Shankle & Amen authors of "Preventing Alzheimer's") maintain you can defer AD by as much as 6 years if you take care of symptoms early. Additionally, they contrary to this author, state that AD has a strong inherited risk component (this suggests that the inherited risk is correlated to the genetic risk).
Only by reading several books on the subject can you wrap your brain around it. Nevertheless, there is consensus that good living and learning is the best you can do for both your body and your brain. Besides the inevitable intellectual dissonance associated with this subject you still get confirmation of what to do to optimize your brain.
An easy read, well written book.......2005-11-02
This book is an easy read and is well written. I follow the research to a certain extent in this area and the book is very upto date. I read it in one day. The title can be misunderstood (Reason for 4* and not 5*). The author actually only provides little information on optimizing memory - I would suggest you read some other book like 'super power memory' if you are looking for that. This book will only give you an overview of training your memory and not specifics. However, if you want to learn how physiologically it happens and just learn about brain and memory in general this book is really good. You may want to omit chapters 7-8 if you are not really interested in learning about diseases/disorders affecting the brain.
Harvard Medical School Guide for Optimal Memory by Nelson.......2005-05-12
This book has classic methods for achieving optimal memory at
any age. The authors describe the following:
- how to control hypertension
- the benefits of a formal exercise program
- reducing alcohol to enhance memory
- optimal sleep
- managing stress
- Vitamins B and C and their role in memory management
- reduction of medications as a condition precedent to mental
wellness
This book contains important discussions on how to avoid or reduce classic Alzheimer and dementia-like scenarios in the later years. The volume is worth the price charged for the value of
the information contained. This book has optimal medicinal
and alternative medicine approaches to the subject of memory
management in mid-life and beyond.

The Professional Chef, 8th Edition
ASIN: 0750679360 |
Book Description
The book seeks not to present a detailed history and discussion, but instead is intended to provide the student with an appreciation of the idea that all cuisines of the world have something unique to offer to a menu. The author strongly believes that foods of other nations (and even other areas of the United States) are too often given short shrift by culture-bound students and chefs, and that every attempt should be made to open their minds to the unlimited possibilities available. The word foodism is introduced to refer to biases against foods outside your culture.
* Draws on diverse culinary traditions including the Americas, Europe, Pacific Rim, Africa, the Middle East, and South Asia to teach students to appreciate that all cuisines of the world have something unique to offer to a menu
* Introduces the concept of "foodism," a bias that can impair a chef's creativity
* Offers comparisons in the history, evolution, and migration of food ingredients and techniques
* Includes a CD with recipes from around the world
Customer Reviews:
A Delightful Introduction to the Culinary Field and to World Cuisine.......2006-04-01
This delightful and enlightening book is well-suited as either a textbook or as part of your personal collection. The author's winning way and in-depth knowledge unite to bring you not only a solid introduction to the field, but also an appreciation for the diversity of the foods of the world. In fact, a dominant theme that permeates the book is that "The world is a collection of foods to enjoy", to borrow a quote from the book.
The author coins a term very early on. That term, "foodism", is defined as "prejudice against the food of other cultures", and the author makes a persuasive attempt to convince readers to free themselves of biases or preconceived notions they may harbor, either knowingly or unknowingly, against the food of cultures other than their own.
The book is well-structured for learning, with each chapter starting with a list of "Learning Objectives" and a "Chapter Outline". Each chapter ends with a list of "Selected Terms for Review", a list of "Review Questions", and a list of "Suggested Readings/Web Sites to Visit". The book also contains a glossary and an extensive bibliography.
The book comprises the following 14 chapters:
1. Overview of World Food and Foodservice
2. Keeping Your Customers and Employees Safe
3. Your Tools
4. Introduction to Culinary Techniques and Principles
5. Planning and Documenting Your Culinary Creations
6. The World of Stocks, Sauces, and Soups
7. Finger Foods: Appetizers and Sandwiches
8. Creating Salads
9. Creating with Meats
10. Creating with Poultry
11. Creating with Seafood
12. Creating with Vegetables
13. Creating with Dairy Products and Eggs
14. Basic Baking Principles
Finally, the book includes a recipe CD that spans 192 pages. But the content of this CD is more than just a recipe collection; at numerous points, it provides additional instruction above and beyond that provided in the text of the book. The CD is a very substantial complement to the book!
All-in-all, this book is highly-recommended as a worthy addition to your library!

Includes step-by-step instructions for 30 quilt blocks and assembly instructions and templates for six full quilts.
Customer Reviews:
lyrical, elegant and inspiring.........2005-05-14
From the lyrical title "Fabled Flowers" to the elegant designs displayed, Kumiko Sudo has demonstrated artistry and exquisite taste.
Combining techniques first used for paper origami the author/artist employs every trick using cloth & stitching to create divine quilt patches which are enhanced with the Japanese quilting technique known as Sashiko.
Sashiko quilting began as a means of reinforcing work wear, and also stitching layers of padding for the cloth armor of the Samurai. It evolved into an intricate and breathtaking art of fabric enhancement and is employed herein for detailing on the small squares constructed by Kumiko for this book.
30 quilt blocks are featured, in gorgeous colour and detail deliciously folded fabric in different flower folds from complicated Hydrangea to glorious Pomegranate and sweet Morning Glory. I lament only the lack of Peonies, as a personal favorite.
The guides for folding the origami effect flowers are realtively simple and easy to follow, while the detailing on the Sashiko quilting is heavenly inspiration!
All necessary templates are included at end of book as well as clear instructions for assembly.
These quilt patterns are much more applique than patchwork although some is included in the design - a little bit of everything for everyone.
Great inspirational book and definately worth the price.
As a extra snippet, a cute fable is included with every flower.

Fabulous Flowers.......2004-10-24
Another excellent book from Kumiko. Clear, precise directions and diagrams. The coloured pictures are worth buying the book for.
Best of Kumiko Sudo's books!.......2001-07-16
In this book, Kumiko has included the most fantastic flowers for applique based on origami, unique designs, and sushiko quilting designs. There is enough variety for even beginners, and several designs that are advanced or intermediate too. Her fabric choices are very artistic. With each design, Kumiko also includes her inspiration for the piece in the form of poetry or a story. This helps one to really feel a part of the design. There is room for much creativity. One can make a single square or a small quilt, or even full size if desired.
Inspiring, creative, lyrical, harmony through fabric art.......1999-04-21
The life-experience fables that accompany the creative expression of this fabric/quilt artist add to the wonderful texture of the final product. This book opens up new dimensions and levels of creativity using fabric as a vehicle and providing a serene pleasue for even the casual quilter. The directions are easy to understand. The patterns are complete. The process is great fun.
Applique with a unique look!.......1998-08-05
I love this book. I wanted to do something floral, I did want to do some applique, but didn't want to do a Baltimore album style quilt. This was the answer. It's beautiful, less work than regular applique, and very unique and visually interesing. I'm working on the hydrangea block.
The blocks are big (mine is 17 inches) and 3 dimentional. Some of the folded shapes are tacked down.

Book Description
Here's the gardener you wish you had next door, speaking from personal experience and offering expert advice. As Rita Buchanan writes, "This book has a mission--to inspire you to go dig up a part of your yard and plant a garden there. When that place is full, dig another spot and transform it, too. Keep this up until you're totally surrounded by fragrant flowers, tasty herbs, and colorful foliage. You'll never look back." The sixteen chapters cover some of the most popular subjects in gardening--herbs, fragrant plants, cut flowers, bulbs, and groundcovers--as well as some of the most challenging: planting under a tree, gardening on a hillside, growing flowers that survive hot summers, and choosing plants for winter beauty. Gardening leads in many directions, but they all revolve around growing plants. This is the book that will inspire you as it shows you how to get started.
Customer Reviews:
basic, but wonderful.......1999-03-25
I checked this book out of the library and could have kept it for 4 weeks at a time -- but I liked it so much, I decided to order it. The writing is very good, and it's so full of art and pictures, it's really fun to read. I already have truckloads of dense, verbose garden books (which I seldom actually read!) but this one is more fun than the rest. It doesn't replace the voluminous garden library we all want to have, but it is definitely worth its place on the shelf!
I think she's done it!.......1998-11-28
Rita Buchanan seems to have achieved her goal of inspiring me to "dig up part of your yard and plant a garden there." As a librarian, I purchased the book for my library. When it arrived, I took it home, and now I'm spending my a bit of my meager income to order a copy for myself. Experienced gardeners probably will find this too basic for their needs, but those of us who are timid but aspiring may find just the help we need. This is a very attractive book, with numerous color illustrations and photographs, and the text is both encouraging and stimulating. The try-it-you'll-like-it philosophy pervades and we are encouraged to take a deep breath, start small, but START and do SOMETHING!

Customer Reviews:
Sensible and Fun.......2004-12-27
I bought this book after the birth of my 2nd child...who was much more difficult than my 1st. I found this book to be fun, funny, and the most balanced approach to finding what's right for you and your spouse that I've read...and I'm a reader! Most books regarding childbirth and childrearing seem to feel the need to instill a lot of guilt if you don't follow what they recommend as THE way to do things. Lorilee Craker discussed different methods/schools of thought, as well as testimonials from women who had used the various approaches and why. No campaigning for one particular method, just an honest look at the options. Her treatment of the topics of body image and post-partum depression were the most sensitive and hopeful I've read. I buy this book for every new mother I know!
A helpful bit of comic relief for sleep deprived new parents.......2004-06-07
As a first time parent, I have been a little overwhelmed with all that is involved in having a baby. Reading Craker's book has been such a relief!
The book has a chapter for each of the first 12 months of baby's life. Each chapter begins with a letter that a mother has written to her child - they are heart-warming and moving. Then the chapter focuses on a few of the issues that occur/are appropriate for the respective months. Craker's wonderful sense of humor comes through on each and every page. She discusses everything from feeding baby, sleep (or lack there of!), to discipline. This is not a "how-to" book, rather it is more of a "from-one-mom-to-another" book. Rather than reading one chapter at a time, I read the book straight through. I laughed and cried, and then laughed some more. I highly recommed this book for new parents, it would also make a great gift!
