"Mrs. Wattles, there is never an easy way to say this. There's been an accident. Your daughter was killed." The author's story is one of grief and the struggle to resume life after the loss of a child. Mandy, a recent high school graduate, had spent the last 30 days trying to regain her life. She had just completed a recovery program for addiction when the two-car accident took her life. How does a parent accept death of a child who has just shown renewed excitement and hope in life?

For Mrs. Wattles.......2006-05-24
I was a student of Mrs. Wattles' English class back in the 90's. I was also a friend of Mandy's.
I try to read this book at least once a year to remind me of the importance of family and why I should live each day as if it were my last. I have battled addiction for years and this book has helped, and still continues to help me immensely!!
I plan on sharing this book with my son in the coming years. He is now 10 years old.
Today, I ordered a copy as a gift for a lady who I work with. She lost her teenage daughter in a car accident a few short years ago. I am hoping this book will touch her heart, as it has mine - and will somehow bring her a sense of peace, knowing that she is not alone.
Mrs. Wattles, thank you for writing this book. You remain in my thoughts and prayers, yesterday, today, and always! Much love to you!

Grief Therapy.......2002-03-12
"Today I Smile," offers each of us a glimpse into the raw pain of dealing with the death of a loved one. Readers experience the havoc drug addiction creates for the no-longer-denying-addict and her family. "Today I Smile," is insightful and offers hope to all in the midst of dealing with addiction or the loss of a loved one. I applaud the author's courage at opening up her experience with her daughter's addiction and the grief that raged at her daughter's untimely death. God Bless You, Diane....
A Story That Stays With You.......2002-01-02
I just finished reading "Today I Smile." I was struck by the author's honesty in telling a painful story. This is a well written story that allows the reader into the author's life. I felt as if I knew Mandy. I wanted to hug Kelsey and Diane. I highly recommend this book, for anyone that has lost a child, or for anyone that has a loved one involved in drugs. The story is told without self-pity, only with love and a need to share. There are many important facts that are written for all parents.
This is a "must read."
Insightful Book.......2001-12-27
My greatest fear is losing my son or daughter, and this book was not only heartwrenching, but insightful as well, delving into young people and the continual problem with drugs and addiction. Excellent book, especially for parents or teachers of our young ones.
Evelyn Horan/author/Jeannie, A Texas Frontier Girl Book One.......2001-12-21
An important and timely read for parents and those involved with children and young people. We must all be aware and alert concerning the dangers to the unwary in our present time. A sensitive and moving story. A must read for everyone!

Worthless.......2004-09-10
As a practicing attorney and filmmaker, I found John J. Lee, Jr.'s book to be practically useless. While the table of contents is impressive, his discussion of each topic is cursory and usually limited to a couple paragraphs of very broad and general language. The limited industry data provided is dated and the few documents that are provided, mostly arcane excel spreadsheet forms, are so specifically tailored to extremely large studio multi-picture deals as to be useless to anyone other than a major studio executive without legal counsel (unlikely) or a first-time producer of a multi-million dollar feature and a large legal budget (again, not likely ) or an accountant. For your money and time, there are much better books and materials out there that provide good, solid practical advice and information for independant filmmakers and attorneys alike.
Those who do not produce films give seminars and write books.......2003-12-09
From the appendix the book is based on a lie. He first states all of the forms that are presented on the CD. He claims the AFMA International Multiple Rights Deal Letter is on this CD! It most certainly IS NOT! All of the rest of his forms, which are for the most part, pretty much irrelevant are there, and presented in a very outdated fashion. The information in the book is logical and methodical and is a sensible approach to producing films, but I am certain he has never done so. He has a 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, priority approach to financing and distribution which is seldom the way in which situations transpire in the world in which films are produced. His book is a text book world for students in a class room, as is his world best served "giving" his seminars, then in actually producing films. The book certainly disseminates a wonderful amount of options and fully exlores them all in detail and accuracy, in a way that breaks incredibly complicated information into simplicity which is terrific and most appreciated. This is by far my favorite book on film producing. But I purchased the book for the CD and that agreement and he did not honor that agreement or his word, therefore, I have no respect for him or his publisher.
5 Stars.......2003-04-12
If you're not a [professional] or a rich kid then you had better know what you're doing. Read everything you can find.
Excellent "Business Side" of the business book........2002-12-12
Make no mistake, this is NOT a book about producing a film or running a production. This is a great book about the 'business side' of the film business.
Lots of information on how prodco's are set up, figuring out distribution (although nothing about going the direct-to-video route) deals.
No matter what kind of production company you are setting up you will find information of use in here but it's not about production planning from the sense of scheduling or day-to-day running a prodco.
Highly recommended!.......2000-06-29
I recently took the producer's business seminar offered by John J. Lee Jr. Not only is he an exceptional speaker, but the material within the book is truly amazing. For new producers like myself, the book gives the reader a wealth of information on the film business. For those of you who are interested in the seminar, I would also recommend that. Its worth every penny!

Good, but could use more details.......2007-07-07
This book was very informative on many levels. It had excellent advice on the broad questions concerning performance reviews. How often should employees be reviewed? What style should you use? How can you deal with particular types of people? I felt it could have used more information on how to deal with specific people (the passive types in particular). Also, there isn't really an introduction to the appendices, they are just thrown at you. A section on how to setup and test/refine an evaluation form would have been very helpful.
Overall, excellent book (especially as an introduction), but not thorough enough to stand on its own in creating an employee evaluation system.
Clear View of Murky Personnel Evaluation Process.......2006-03-22
This practical guide is a must-read for anyone who conducts performance evaluations - especially for those new to the process. Step-by-step, it explains why you should evaluate employee performance, how to set up a program and how to conduct the evaluations. The appendices alone are invaluable. Author Glenn Shepard provides nearly 60 pages of useful, hands-on materials. Appendix A is packed with words and phrases that will enable you to be specific about your observations of employee behavior in areas such as attendance and workplace safety. Appendix B provides five performance evaluation forms that demonstrate a variety of evaluation techniques, such as using essays or assigning numerical values to weighted descriptive scales. Appendix C includes several self-evaluation forms organizations can use as models. We recommend this book to managers, supervisors and human resource professionals who must develop workable, legally sound employee performance evaluation systems.
Invaluable Advice on Effective Communication .......2005-09-02
Perfomance reviews are such an important yet sometimes difficult task for every manager. This practical guide gives you clear and specific ways to communicate an employee's performance. I found the sample phrases and words to be particularly helpful in finding new ways to get my point across. Easy to comprehend and packed with valuable information,Glenn's book turns the process of performance evaluations from a "dreaded task" to a productive and effective opportunity to communicate with your employee.
Artful Evaluations? YES!.......2005-07-26
Glenn Shepard shows you exactly what to do and what NOT to say if you've never had to do a Performance Evaluation before. This book is a definite must-have for every business office. When you are done reading this book, you will have mastered the art of constructive performance evaluations and still have a valuable employee in your company! Not only will your employee be valuable, but with Glenn's help, your employee will become "invaluable". I guarantee it!
Performance Reviews are a GOOD Thing. .......2005-07-26
Of course I always hated doing them. Glenn tackles this issue head on as usual and arms managers with the technique and even sample phrases to get us going in the right direction. He reminds us in his frank, no- nonsense way that we must use this tool to give honest and open feedback (good or bad) to our employees.
Thanks, Glenn!

The history of the intensely secretive Soviet space program makes a riveting backdrop to this lucid biography of the dominant figure in that program, Sergei Korolev (1907-66). A brilliant engineer and superb organizer, Korolev also possessed the cynicism and political cunning necessary to get his work done and protect his staff from a government so paranoid he was forced to work in anonymity, known only as the Chief Designer. The author, himself an aerospace professional, interviewed many of Korolev's colleagues in Russia and brings to life both his enormous achievements and his earthy personality.

More than just a biography, this is also a history of the Soviet space program at the height of the Cold War. . . . Highly recommended."-Library Journal.
"For decades the identity of the Russian Chief Designer who shocked the world with the launching of the first Sputnik was one of the Soviet Union's best-kept secrets. Customer Reviews:
A must read.......2007-07-14
James Harford has done a great job in putting this book together. It has taken him many years to do this. It is a well written and a well researched book. This book tells the story of Sergei Pavlovich Korolev who was the Mastermind behind the Soviet space program. There are a lot of interviews with people who worked with him and new him. It gives you a really good look at this great Man. It also gives you a good history lesson of the soviet space program.
I would highly recommend this book if you are interested in the history of space. If you want some inspiration in life of what one man can do then this is a great read.
The other side..........2001-10-31
Go beyond the Propaganda with this book.
Massively documented, dense and well written, this book is a treasure to anyone interested in the space race, the men and women behind it, the politics involved, between nations, ideologies, and especially between individuals.
With "Korolev", you follow the rise and fall (to the Gulag), and rise(!) of the man that took on himself to beat the Americans, fighting against the Party, the lack of interest from his leaders, his enemies, and of course, some technological problems.
It's hard to comprehend what could have motivated anyone to work during this troubled era with such devotion and faith in his country, even after having been sent for no reason to Siberia for 7 years during the Stalinist Terror.
And yet, it's this period of space history that saw Sputnik, Gagarin, Vostok and Venera, as well as a number of "circus acts", as they said, that scared the USA about a possible "Communist Moon". It's also the Soviet space program that will create the most ingenious space technology ever built (read "Russia In Space" about the RD-180, or the NK-33 rocket engines, built in the 60's).
It's worth noting that the author never tries to revise history: facts, facts and facts, explained in their context. I am just waiting for such a book to be written on the US space program, the only country with China that still uses propaganda... After all, NASA has been created for the Moon race during the Cold War.
Great insight into the Soviet space program.......2001-05-22
This book is very well resarched and gives deep insights into the Soviet space effort unknown in the West. A must to read for anyone really interested in space. Before only the American side was presented to the public, while the Soviet side well hidden. Very interesting is the the fate of the N-1 Moon rocket. It is impossible to believe that the Soviets had not only one manned Moon program but two competing ones.
A review of Hartford's biography of Korolyev.......2001-05-09
Sergei Pavlovich Korolyev was the "chief designer" responsible for the development of the world's first intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) and artificial earth satellite (Sputnik 1). The authoritative biography of Sergei Pavlovich must probably await a translation from the Russian. More technical detail is required beyond what is available in Hartford's book. Still, the present volume is the best current study of Korolyev available in English. The book is more than adequate for a popular readership but will occasionally annoy the professional with errors like the one on page 255 where Hartford claims that the Soyuz reentry capsule is spherical and the orbital module is bell-shaped. The opposite is true. I also felt there was a bit too much speculation mixed in with the historical fact.
So that is what happened.......2001-04-18
I began to read as the space race started and I saw and heard stories about failed and lost Russian space flights. Now that the Soviet archives are so open it is wonderful that all of this information is gather in one book so I can see what is true and what is rumor and where so many of these stories came from. This book clarified so much of what I heard during the 1960s. I see an unflattering review here from The NY Times Review of Books by Alex Roland with a remark about information available from other sources. What a snob! First, I keep my eye out for technical books aimed at the general public I don't know of any other book that collects so much relevent information and also tracks down rumors (without getting into unfounded x-file-ish theories). Yes, if I'd made it my career to study aeronautics then this Korolev book might not so special. What might I read? Oh, here's a book "Atmospheric Flight.." by Mr. Roland. What a snort!

Highlight of Irish From Louisiana Fighting for Lee & Jackson.......2002-09-27
A very personal portrayal of a predominately Irish brigade from New Orleans fighting for the south. The enigma is that this regiment had the highest percentage of Irish in any brigade plus they were linked with the famed Wheat's Tigers plus they fought in Virginia during the entire Civil War. This is particularly impressive since New Orleans was captured so early in the war and the 6th Louisiana virtually became orphans in regards to State support. Much like the famed Kentucky Brigade. Gannon is a excellent writer that through intensive research provides flowing first hand accounts particularly from the brigade priest and Captain Ring. The high point of the book is the close up look at where the brigade participated in major campaigns and battles. They were a key part of the Valley Campaign, particularly Port Republic, the Seven days, Cedar Mountain, both Bull runs, Gettysburg, Early's Valley campaign including the threat to Washington and the disasters at Cedar Creek and Fort Steadman. The best gem in the book is the section on the capture of Rappahannock Station, which was an isolated bridgehead for Lee's army located on the north side of the river. This fascinating break down in strategy and command is very well focused and told in detail because the luckless 6th is one of the 3,000 troops that virtually get overwhelmed and captured in a sudden attack by large numbers. This little told event precedes Grant's arrival but seems to reveal problems in southern command caused by the lost of key officers and the strain of a long war on the Confederate supplies. The sadness of the brigade is captured as it is progressively whittled to only 50 odd survivors at Appomattox.
Irish Rebels pays tribute to all members of the Regiment.......2001-01-24
This book is a fascinating and intriguing account of the 6th Louisiana. While Gannon named his book Irish Rebels and covered the majority Irish members, he does give due to the Louisianians and other immigrants who made up the regiment. I was grateful to see this as my ggggrandfather was one of those members in a company from outside of New Orleans, Company C, the St. Landry (Parish) Light Guards and to see the action his unit took part in on paper was a great experience. It gave a story to my grandfather's participation in the War I never knew!
The Fighting Tigers of Ireland.......2000-02-11
I stumbled onto this book while researching my family history, and was absolutely taken with the story of these men. Gannon is a gifted writer with a reverence for his subject, respect for the facts and sources, and a warm narrative style. This book is a treat to read, and in doing so you will not only develop a personal interest in the lives of these brave Irish men, but you will understand how their lives impacted the nation we have become. Irish Rebels is a marvelous story, told by a master!
After 130 years, the Confederate Irish get their due........1999-04-07
As the author of this book, it is not my place to review it. However, I thought Amazon customers would be interested in what some published reviews have said about my book. Here are some quotes from reviews of Irish Rebels, Confederate Tigers, with the publication noted: "Irish Rebels, Confederate Tigers ....is a full-blown regimental history of a Confederate regiment that stands second to none in the Confederate Army. Raised in New Orleans, this unit fought from First Manassas to Appomattox Court House....IRCT is a first-rate regimental history...There is no published history of the unit so the author had to dig hard and long to come up with many scraps of material to put this work together. He writes a smoothly flowing narrative....you can get to know the men and care about them....It is one of the best this reviewer has seen in a long time."--Mike Cavanaugh, in Civil War News, April 1999.
"James P. Gannon, a former Wall Street Journal editor fascinated with the role of Irish immigrants in the Confederacy, takes his place with other distinguished military historians by adopting, and even improving upon, this classic literary form....This is careful history, backed by more than 100 pages of notes, individual biographies and source material....meticulous research...." --Duncan Spencer, The Washington Times, Aug. 29, 1988.
"James Gannon makes this unit come alive. The book is that rare work which combines the prose of a good novel with the solid research of a piece of classic history. Gannon is a former editor of the Wall Street Journal and the Des Moines Register. His journalist background is evidence on every page." --Gary Joiner, The Shreveport (La.) Times.
"Gannon's book is one of the best I have ever seen on the history of a Civil War regiment. The listing of members is a great research aid for any family historian. This beautiful hardcover volume...contains 388 pages with photos and illustrations and maps." --Damon Veach, The New Orleans Times-Picayune.
This is a fascinating account of the Irish in the Civil War!.......1999-04-02
James P. Gannon details a fascinating 6th Louisiana Volunteer regiment in this book. The men who served are detailed so that the reader comes to know each one. This is a great title not only for civil war buffs, but for genealogist's as well, as it contains a roster with details on each man. These Irish lads served the Confederacy with everything they possessed and their tale is served well by Mr. Gannon. This book makes fascinating reading and I highly recommend it! It's become an integral part of my Irish history collection!

Risk Society : A departure from Rational Risk .......2007-03-12
Ulrich Beck argues that industrial society that used to be known as the distribution of goods has now been moved toward distributions of risk and hazard named as risk society. In other words in the advanced modern world, the social production of wealth systematically goes hand in hand with social production of risks. Accordingly, the problems and conflicts of distribution in a society of shortages are over layered by problems and conflicts that arise from over-production, definition and distribution of scientifically and technologically produced risks, says Beck. Then He argues that science has changed from an activity in the service of truth to an activity without truth. Likewise the consequences of this reflexive modernization contain a tendency toward globalization and ignore the boundaries of nation states which lastly results in continuous global endangerment.
The book also describes the way that the general forms of social life has moved from traditional societies in the mid 18th century to early modernity in 20th century and lastly toward reflexive modernity in the late 20th century which individualism is widespread. No longer, unskilled and uneducated people required and instead of high value on long term loyalty to the corporate institutions of the 20th century a shift to the self as the primary agent (i.e. a shift to I) had taken place. To sum up, Beck gives a new identity to risk which long has been dominated by rational doctrine. Manufactured Risks which are at the heart of the Modern society have become a taboo. The modern corporations have build a "Family of Myths" among which the most important is the "Myth of Rationality".
risk society towards a new modernity.......2000-09-02
The Book consists of two interrelated theses. one reflexive modernization and other issue of risk. The concept of risk is directly bound to the concept of reflexive modernization. It shows how classical modernization is different from reflexive modernization. Risk may be defined as a systematic way of dealing with hazards and insecurities induced and introduced by modernization itself. The risk and hazards of today is of global nature of their threat to people, animals and plants .It results in global industrial pollution, contamination of air, water, foodstuffs etc. and also sickness ,death of plants, animals and people. Another dimension of risk is social transformation with modernity. There is a process of individualization deprive class distints but inequalities by no means disappear. There is a shift from the system of standardised full employment to the system of flexible and pluralised under employment.Risk of scientific development increases disproportionately faster than solution. With the globalisation of industrial society political system looses its function as modernization, technoeconomic system changes the realms of social life and on other hand political systens pre-supposes condition of the system.
Book Description
Environmental and risk issues are symptomatic of deep-seated social and cultural tensions and transformations in the fabric of contemporary societies. This major contribution to the study of risk, ecology, and the place of social theory in making sense of the environment helps us to understand the politics of ecology and the place of social theory in making sense of environmental issues. The book provides insights into the complex dynamics of change in so-called risk societies. In this volume, the issues of risk and environment are explored at three levels. The contributors offer a critical assessment of dominant institutional ways of thinking and talking about risk and counterpose these with more open, self-critical approaches. They explore individuals' sense of risk and its expression in collective insecurities and they show how political thinking and debate on risk and environmentalism has been, and can further be, transformed. Wide-ranging and accessible, Risk, Environment & Modernity contains contributions from leading scholars, including Ulrich Beck, author of Risk Society. It will rapidly establish itself as the key text in the field and will be required reading by students of sociology, political science, geography, and environmental studies. "This is the strongest edited collection on the relationship between modernity, risk and the environment to be published to date and it deserves a place on the book shelf of every one who takes these issues seriously. Perhaps more importantly this book needs to be read by everyone who thinks that existing responses will ultimately 'solve the environmental problem.' The editors present the collection as a slow manifesto capable of transforming the reductionism and realism they see dominating both natural and social scientific approaches to the environment. In twelve essays, organized into three sections, considerable progress is made toward this ambitious goal. . . . This is a book with an important message one can only hope that it is read and widely debated." --a prepublication review in Environmental Politics

Customer Reviews:
Better Trout Habitat: A guide to Stream Restoration and Mana.......2001-11-01
This book provides an in depth review of the methods and techniques used to provide habitat characteristics to a variety of streams. The writting style is excellent for both the lay reader as well as someone with a scientific back ground. However, it does not dwell on some fot the more technical details which requires a more technical level book to provide more indepth details. However, as a general manual to habitat resoration it provides an excellent background as well as the necessary caution needed when conducting these types of instream restoration projects.
Good Trout Habitat and Life Cycle Reference.......2000-06-07
This book offers a good variety of man-made trout improvement structures, but the current (2000) state-of-the art in trout habitat improvement trends toward a more natural, vegetation and channel reconstruction approach. This book provides excellent design guidelines and background information on trout and their life cycle, and perhaps the most useful part of this book was the author's ability to teach the reader enough about the habitat requirements of trout to allow the reader some latitude and innovation with their habitat improvement designs.
I personally enjoyed the workable, readable and philosophical approach to fish habitat improvement, and I believe that this book would be a good reference for anyone who wishes to improve trout habitat.
Remember, an ounce of habitat preservation is better than ten pounds of habitat restoration efforts! (Also, the information in this book will help the reader become a more effective trout fisherman!)
