Book Description
He was an industrialist. An economist. A medical humanitarian. A media pioneer. An educator. A moral reformer. A botanist. And a Christian missionary. And he did more for the transformation of the Indian subcontinent in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries than any other individual before or since.
Many know of William Carey. Some know about the specifics of his work and ministry. But few understand the profound contemporary significance of his life. Few realize how much we owe the increasing globalization of Christianity to the silent revolution he initiated. Fewer still are aware of his legacy of sensitivity to the variety of issues confronting true gospel witness in any culture.
This biography about the central character in the story of India's modernization and transformation will help you understand Carey's impact. But
The Legacy of William Carey is more than a biography. It is a charge to all Christians to respond in kind within our own cultures, and to use Carey's example as our model for taking the light of the Gospel into every corner of society. If we follow in his footsteps, not only will lives be bettered this side of heaven, but hearts will be changed for eternity--and entire cultures transformed for Christ.

more a tease than a substantial essay, by design.......2006-04-28
The book was a gift, towards the ministries of mercy class i am reading for, as such it moved to the top of my TBR list.
It's a quick and breezy read, writing informally and meant to inspire and motivate more than a deep discussion on the topic. It's a collection of 5 essays, the first 3 by Ruth and centering on the place of women in Indian society and how important Christian was in their freedom for Hindu bondage, with particular attention paid to the issue of sati, or widow burning on her husband's funeral pyre. Chapters 4, and 5 are by Vishal and center on the crucial elements of Carey's Christian vision and how it made India's modernization possible. Chapter 5 is, by far, the best chapter in the book, i'd recommend reading it first. The book is suitable probably to the junior high level of reading and would make an acceptable Sunday School text on either missions, Carey himself or the entry of Christianity into India, this is it's nature target audience.
It touches on a number of significant theological themes but doesn't dwell on them in any depth, that is not the book's goal. But rather a consistent theme emerges that Carey as the genius who brings Christianity to India is responsible for the modernisation and de-emphasis on Hindu religious elements that kept the people both poor and enslaved to idols. There is a secondary theme that is not explicitly developed, but is perhaps more interesting, that is this Christianization is under attack in India and has been since the 1970's by both Hindu restorationists and postmodernists who would undo the accomplishments and force India back into darkness.
I found the book an interesting, if shallow read, i see their passion for Carey and his work as well as their desire for India's cultural renassiance as it incorporates Christian elements in the place of it's Hindi ones. I see how ideas i've met in other contexts can be of value in analysis here, but the book left me with more questions than answers. Mostly to read something more difficult and expansive from Vishal's word processor. I've learned something about Carey, i didn't know his 1st wife went crazy in the mission field and was locked in her room for 12 years. But would be interested in learning more about the influence of Christianity in Hindu India in the 19thC.
Job Well Done!.......2000-08-13
Wonderful work done by two individuals who know the country of India well. Not only is it an accurate description of William Carey, but the history of India itself. I am currently reading it for the second time. It is full of alot if information about how truely the power of the Gospel helps set people free in spirit and industrialization. Great gift for those who are our Hindu friends!

Any book that can give voice to the voiceless should be celebrated. No one feels this more strongly than Wally Lamb, editor of Couldn't Keep It to Myself, a collection of stories by 11 women imprisoned in the York Correctional Institution in Connecticut. Teacher and novelist Lamb was invited to head a writing workshop at York Correctional Institution in 1999. His somewhat reluctant acceptance soon turned into steadfast advocacy once the women in his charge began to tell their stories. Lamb maintains that there are things we need to know about prison and prisoners: "There are misconceptions to be abandoned, biases to be dropped." However, as heartfelt as his appeal is, nothing speaks more convincingly in this book than the stories themselves.
Those collected here are disturbing and horrific. They reveal, often in graphic detail, the worst kind of abuse: incest, drug addiction, spousal violence, parental neglect, or incompetence. They're also testimony to what social workers and health care professionals have confirmed for years--that those who populate our prisons are often victims first themselves. Thus, the telling of these stories serves as a form of therapy. They are also sad accounts of the brutalities many suffer, yet few discuss: "One day I figured out a dying little girl lived inside of me, so I threw her a lifeline in the form of paper and pen." Considering the degradation the contributors have experienced both in and outside prison, the courage, candor, and honesty with which they speak truly make these stories, as difficult as they are to read, "victories against voicelessness--miracles in print." --Silvana Tropea
Book Description
In a stunning work of insight and hope, New York Times bestselling author Wally Lamb once again reveals his unmatched talent for finding humanity in the lost and lonely and celebrates the transforming power of the written word.
For several years, Lamb has taught writing to a group of women prisoners at York Correctional Institution in Connecticut. In this unforgettable collection, the women of York describe in their own words how they were imprisoned by abuse, rejection, and their own self-destructive impulses long before they entered the criminal justice system. Yet these are powerful stories of hope and healing, told by writers who have left victimhood behind.
In his moving introduction, Lamb describes the incredible journey of expression and self-awareness the women took through their writing and shares how they challenged him as a teacher and as a fellow author. Couldn't Keep It to Myself is a true testament to the process of finding oneself and working toward a better day.

Never stereotype.......2007-09-11
After reading this book, we have to be reminded that not everyone in prison is a bad person, although all have done bad things. All of the stories were heartwrenching, but one of the most disturbing was Diane Bartholomew's. What she must have endured during her marriage to an physical, mental and sexual abuser. These stories were haunting and very moving. We all have a testimony, but these women shared them with all who would read them. Powerful reading.
Fantastic Book.......2007-08-29
I am an avid reader and belong to a book club so I have read many good books but this was one of the best. I liked the author's previous book, She's Come Undone, so I knew his work when I purchased this one. It was lengthy, 891 pages, but it carried me along until the last page was read. Good writing and good storytelling made this a powerful essay on human strengths and weaknesses.
People-stories and the humanity behind their writing (despite some official hounds of persecution).......2007-06-09
We need more often to be reminded that people whom we stereoptype/label/classify are actually persons, looking for their lives to be lived long after we (amateur social analysts, all) have made our judgments and assigned others to categories that we can either dismiss or simply feel superior to. Wally Lamb and his hard-working partners have brought us vibrant humanity between book covers. Real-life experiences in skillful language. Nice job!
Great Book Couldn't Put IT Down.......2007-05-15
I really enjoyed this book. It gave a lot of insight into the lives of imprisoned women before there incarceration and afterwards. Changed my outlook on those imprisoned not only by their incarceration but by their lives.
This book was absolutely amazing.......2007-04-28
This book was wonderful. Very inspiring, sad, and amusing at the same time. I would recommend it to anyone.

Learn how high impact leaders communicate.......2006-02-21
It is no secret that some leaders can inspire people to heroic levels of greatness, while others can not even stimulate individuals to the level of mediocrity. Some organizations can inspire fierce employee loyalty while others watch their top talent depart regularly. The author of this book argues that often the reason for these situations lies in the way the top leaders of an organization communicate with the rest of the organization.
The author of this book shares his insight as to how high impact leaders communicate. By sharing the stories of some remarkable leaders who use Powerful Conversations techniques to spread their voice throughout their organization, to instill trust and loyalty, and to effectuate deep and profound change when change is necessary, the author hopes to share:
· why you must always say what you will do and what you say;
· how to use the four-step Tower of Power to guide companies through Powerful Conversations that lead to action;
· how to really listen to people so that organizations hear their message and they know that you understand;
· how to create Agenda for change and implement it to create profound change within the organization.
The author shares the five competencies-focused drive, emotional intelligence, trusted influence, conceptual thinking and systems thinking-shared by all high-impact leaders.
Excellent Leadership Tool.......2003-11-24
Prior to reading Powerful Conversations: How High-Impact Leaders Communicate, I had anticipated a manual to the proper rules of conversation. However, this book turned out to be much more than a manual of sorts. Harkins not only provides ways to develop excellent communication as well as leadership skills, he also explains what powerful conversations are, how they are structured, and what types of impacts, accomplishments and outcomes they render.
Being able to communicated effectively is critical in today's corporate world. Harkins reminds us of some of the most basic skills that most of us don't even consider to be as important in communication as they actually prove to be. Skills such as the ability to build trusting relationships and listen carefully to others.
However, not all the techniques discussed are as basic. It does indeed take practice to become a master of powerful conversation. Harkins provides six tools which can be used to enhance your communication and leadership skill in order to ensure greater success. I found Tool 1: Planning, Conducting, and Measuring Powerful Conversations, to be an excellent guideline for the preparation and implementation of powerful conversations. This tool also provides a series of simple but very relevant questions that you can ask yourself to determine what type of outcome resulted from your conversation.
Harkins also includes a self-scoring sample of the Leadership Assessment Instrument (LAI) to help you gain insight into your own leadership abilities, which I found to be extremely helpful.
Overall, I found this book to be very beneficial and would recommend it to professionals, students, and anyone looking to enhance their success.
A piece of the jigsaw.......2003-07-15
The title Powerful Conversations: How High-Impact Leaders Communicate led me to believe that this book was primarily concerned with interpersonal communication. I found, however, that it is largely focussed on the ethics of leadership and the philosophy of emotional intelligence as applied to big business. The book is of high calibre in this respect, and for this reason I gave it 4 stars. But if you are looking for a hands-on manual on communication you will need to look elsewhere.
Anyone who is sufficiently motivated to read this book will no doubt be already aligned with the basic philosophy of trust, openness, honesty, and clarity. The challenge lies in implementing such a philosophy. No doubt Harkins takes a more practical approach in his corporate training programme, and it would be a very large and expensive book if it were to contain such a programme in full. However, I find it frustrating that Harkins spends far more time explaining why than he does explaining how. Some methodology is woven into the text, but on the whole, the presentation focuses largely on principles and attitudes.
All of these elements, of course, provide a necessary foundation for any system; after all, rote behaviours are largely unsustainable. But there is also a need for clear directives on the progressive action steps that need to be taken. The book must serve exceedingly well as a door opener for corporate clients, but the owner/operator of a small business will not find definitive steps that he or she could progressively implement from the book alone. I should add that I am not advocating the rigid paint-by-numbers formula that some other motivational books follow.
What I most question is Harkins' representation of trust as a primary focus, rather than as an outcome of deliberate and conscious process. Trust, far from being a subjective quality only, is an objective competency that employees as well as their leaders must progressively develop and demonstrate. For example, in his book, Leadership, Rudolph Giuliani describes the functioning of his mayoral team with great frankness. In so doing, he demonstrates clearly how trust is not assumed at the beginning; it is developed over time and established through frank and honest appraisal of each team member's verbal and practical input. I miss this in Harkins' book.
I have nevertheless reserved a place for Powerful Conversations on my bookshelves. But to round out Harkins' perspective, I have added books like Rudolph Giuliani's Leadership, Jim Loehr's & Tony Swartz's The Power of Full Engagement, Dorothy Leeds' The 7 Powers of Questions and Meryl Runion's Power Phrases. Together, they make a mighty team.
Insightful!.......2001-04-24
When you talk, do people listen? Communicating effectively is essential in the business world. It is the first step in the path toward leadership. While other business books discuss leadership as a whole, this one focuses in on one of the most basic - and often overlooked - prerequisites to leadership: excellent communication skills. While most of the suggestions presented in Powerful Conversations seem like simple common sense, the book does get you to focus on critical points that you probably take for granted, like building trust, preparing in advance for potentially touchy conversations and actually listening to what other people say. In addition, it offers some helpful conversational strategies and pointers for determining when your meeting is heading south. We [...] recommend this book to executives in leadership positions, who will be reminded to brush up on their conversational style and delivery, and to business people and students looking to talk their way to the top.
Excellent guide for impactful conversations and leadership.......2000-02-25
This book provides the necessary tools for leadership and impactful conversations. It provides real-life technologies and tools for leaders at all levels of the organization. Inspiring and educational, this book should be on the shelf of all emerging and current leaders.

Woman Sage.......2007-05-01

Peace Pilgrim - Review by Trish New, author of The Thrill of Hope and South State Street Journal.......2006-12-13
From 1953 until 1981, this lady walked more than 25,000 miles carrying in her blue tunic her only possessions. For nearly three decades she crossed America bearing the simplest of messages: this is the way of peace--overcome evil with good, and falsehood with truth, and hatred with love. Peace Pilgrim talked about peace among nations, between people and the most important, inner peace. "I talk to groups studying the most advanced spiritual teachings and sometimes these people wonder why nothing is happening in their lives," said Peace Pilgrim. "Their motive is the attainment of inner peace for themselves--which of course is a selfish motive. You will not find it with this motive. The motive, if you are to find inner peace, must be an outgoing motive. Service, of course, service. Giving, not getting. Your motive must be good if you work is to have good effect. The secret of life is being of service. ... I've met a few people who had to change their jobs in order to change their lives, but I've met many more people who merely had to change their motive to service in order to change their lives." She talks of purification of thought, motive and desire and relinquishment of self will, the feeling of separateness and the attachment of material things. She says, "No one is truly free who is still attached to material things, or to places, or to people. ... It's all right to use them, that's what they are for. But when they've outlived their usefulness, be ready to relinquish them and perhaps pass them on to someone who does need them. Anything that you cannot relinquish when it has outlived it's usefulness possesses you, and in this materialistic age a great many of us are possessed by our possessions. We are not free." And about trying to control people she says," Anything that you strive to hold captive will hold you captive--and if you desire freedom you must give freedom." Peace Pilgrim speaks of relinquishment of negative feelings. She says of worry, "Worry is not concern, which would motivate you to do everything possible in a situation. Worry is a useless mulling over of things we cannot change." She says no one can hurt you psychologically unless you let them. It is a choice. She says of her steps toward inner peace, "There is nothing new about this. This is universal truth." She says she speaks of them in everyday words in terms of her own personal experience with them. She speaks of living in the highest light you have and you will receive more light. She said the higher self and the lower self war against one another. The higher self has been given names by religious leaders as inner light or the indwelling Christ. When Jesus said, the Kingdom of God is within you, he was referring to the higher self. She said Jesus was called the Christ because his life was governed by this higher governing power. She speaks of the oneness of all creation and oneness with that which many call God. She states that the struggle is over when you will to always do the right thing. She says if your life is overcrowded, you are doing more than is your job to do in the total scheme of things.
She says if your life is overcrowded, you are doing more than is your job to do in the total scheme of things. Submission to good is to be plugged in to the source of universal energy. Peace Pilgrim states that she took no money for speaking and if money was mailed it was used for printing materials that were given away to people seeking the truth. She says you cannot obtain truth by buying it. Nor should it be sold. "Those who have the truth would not be packaging it and selling it, so anyone who is selling it, really does not possess it," she says. I suspect many of the later gurus like made themselves rich from reiterating her concepts with a more sophisticated twist. Friends of Peace Pilgrim give this book away free of charge.

Her Life and Work are Compelling Right Now.......2004-07-03
Peace Pilgrim walked alone and penniless "as a prayer" more than 25,000 miles across America to inspire others to pray and work for peace. Her message was simple-"This is the way of peace: Overcome evil with good, falsehood with truth, and hatred with love." Her 28-year pilgrimage started in 1953. She would not tell you her real name this silver-haired lady with penetrating blue eyes "Peace Pilgrim" is the only name she wished to carry. And she would not tell you the years that she had spent in this world although a friend said she was probably around 80 when she died in a car accident in Indiana in 1981 on her way to a speaking engagement. After walking 25,000 miles, which took her until 1964, she stopped counting the miles. Although she mostly slept under the stars without a sleeping bag she never had another headache or pain or cold once she started her pilgrimage. Carrying in her tunic pockets her only worldly possessions: a comb, a folding toothbrush, a ball point pen, her current correspondence she vowed, "I shall remain a wanderer until mankind has learned the way of peace, walking until given shelter and fasting until given food." She talked with people on dusty roads and city streets, in churches, colleges, to civic groups, on TV and radio discussing peace within and without.
Her pilgrimage covered the entire peace picture: peace among nations, groups, individuals, and inner peace-because that is where peace begins. She believed that world peace would come when enough people attain inner peace.
Since many of us are in deep despair about the human cost of the war in Iraq and Afghanistan the life and teachings of Peace Pilgrim are particularly compelling right now. The press continues to report the grim tally of American soldiers killed in action in Iraq-922 killed and 5,457 wounded. But there are figures neither the Pentagon nor the press talks about-the more than 11,000 American soldiers that came home disabled injured and sick in what the Pentagon considers non-combat circumstances. Nor do we know the number of Iraqi and Afghanistan soldiers and civilians deaths and wounded.
Peace said, "All present wars must cease-we need to find a way to lay down our arms together. We need to set up a mechanism to avoid physical violence in the world." We people of the world need to learn to put the welfare of the whole family above the welfare of any group. The means determines the end-only a good means can really attain a good end. Real peace is more than the absence of war: it is the absence of the cause of the war. Have as your objective the resolving of conflict not the gaining of advantage and live to give instead of get.
Peace said the cause of all difficulties is immaturity. If we were mature, war would not be possible and peace would be assured. In our immaturity we do not know the laws of the universe, and we think evil can be overcome by more evil. One symptom of our immaturity is greed, making it difficult for us to learn the simple lesson of sharing. Then there are symptoms of symptoms like access to pure food, water and air. You don't have to be very good at arithmetic to figure out that if the nations of the world would stop manufacturing implements of destruction, the conditions for a good life could be provided for all people. Immaturity leads to a negative mind for example, a military mind set usually has only military answers. The animal nature thinks in terms of using `the jungle law of tooth and claw' to eliminate all opposition. But this law solves no problems for humans; it can only postpone the solution, and in the long run it worsens things. All war is bad and self-defeating.
Peace suggests America established a Peace Department in our government. It would research peaceful ways to resolve conflicts, war prevention measures and economic adjustments to peace since America's economy seems to work more smoothly in a war or war preparation period. It would ask other nations to establish similar departments and come and work with us for peace. Communications among Peace Departments would be a step towards peace in our world. She said the military forces could clean up the air, the oceans and rivers or take on drainage projects to prevent disastrous floods and other such benefits for humankind.
Many people from other countries told Peace that they considered America the biggest menace to peace in the world because it is the only nation that used the nuclear bomb to kill people and there is no evidence that America will not do it again. Other countries do not always see our kind heart when they look across the sea.
Peace recommends a four-part Community Action Group in every town. The first meeting would teach and focus on inner peace, the second on harmony among individuals, the third on harmony among groups and the fourth on harmony among nations. The sequence would be repeated.
Concerning war Peace consoles "Remember that the darkest hour is just before the dawn." She explains, "There is within the hearts of people a deep desire for peace on earth. It is the job of the peacemaker to inspire out-of-harmony people from apathy, ignorance and fear." Knowing that all things contrary to God's laws are transient we must continue to pray, speak, and act for peace in whatever way we can; to inspire others we must continue to think of peace and know that peace is possible. As Peace said in her book, "One little person, giving all of her time to peace, makes news. Many people, giving some of their time can make history."
INCREDIBLE!!!!.......2003-02-25
I read this book several years ago and was stunned to think that such a remarkable person could have actually existed! Her friends have done a wonderful job of compiling the materials for this book. I have read and reread this book. I imagine I will wear it out before I am through. Her message was simple, her thoughts were clear. Her 28 year pilgrimage was awe inspiring!

Important analysis.......2002-04-22
There is an apparent contradiction between two verses in Psalms: "The earth is the Lord's" (Ps. 24:1) and "The heavens are the heavens of God, but the earth has given by God to human beings" (Ps. 115:16). According to the Talmud, the apparent discrepancy is cleared up in the following way: Before a person says a b'racha (a blessing), before he/she acknowledges God's ownership of the land and its products, then "the earth is the Lord's"; after a person has said a b'racha, acknowledging God's ownership and that we are stewards to see that God's works are properly used and shared, then "the earth has been given by God to human beings."
Unfortunately, few people have heeded this important lesson. The prevalent view today seems to be not that "the earth is the Lord`s" and that people have an important stewardship role, but rather that people have complete freedom to use and exploit the world for maximum profit. Largely because of this attitude, our world is currently facing many environmental threats related to acid rain, the greenhouse effect, ozone layer depletion, erosion of topsoil, destruction of forests and other habitats, pollution of air, water, and soil, and toxic wastes. It is significant that in its first issue of 1989 Time magazine, instead of choosing its usual person of the year, selected our endangered earth as "planet of the year".
In view of the above, one might wonder where organized religion has been while the earth has been so ravaged. In this context, Lewis Regenstein`s Replenish the Earth provides some extremely good news. It carefully documents that there are very powerful messages in all the world`s major religions and many minor religions on stewardship, conservation, and compassion for animals. Also, it discusses many examples of the recent surge of interest and activity on environmental issues in many religious communities, including Jewish communities.
While the book has material of value to people of all religions, and even to people who profess no religion, there are several sections that are of particular interest to concerned Jews:
1. The opening chapter discusses the message in the Torah (although that word isn`t used) and other traditional Jewish sources on conservation and kindness to animals;
2. The views of the prophets on sacrifices is considered;
3. There is a 38 page chapter on "Judaism: The Jewish Tradition of Kindness" that considers Jewish teachings on vegetarianism, hunting, caring for domestic animals, blood sports, nature and animals in worship, and wildlife conservation. The chapter includes Talmudic and current Jewish writings as well as several stories about Jewish heroes and their relationships with animals.
4. The book points to vegetarianism as being the diet most compatible with Jewish values, as well as those of other religions.
Mr. Regenstein is superbly qualified to write this book. He is the author of America the Poisoned and How to Survive in America the Poisoned., a book that was nominated for a Pulitzer prize. His articles have appeared in many publications, including The New York Times, the Washington Post, and the Atlanta Journal and Constitution. He is the Director of the Interfaith Council for the Protection of Animals and Nature in Atlanta, Georgia, an affiliate of the Humane Society of the United States, and vice-president of Help Our Planet Earth. Hence he has an extensive background on both environmental problems as well as religious views on the issues.
As is inevitable in a work of this scope, there are some statements that can be challenged. For example, contrary to Mr. Regenstein`s assertion, the general view of Biblical scholars is that the Biblical prophets condemned not sacrifices as an institution but sacrifices when carried out along with acts of injustice. His statement that through the prophets, "the Lord ordered that (sacrifices) be ended", would be questioned by many people. Also, he should be clearer in indicating that shackling and hoisting are not integral parts of shechita. (Jewish kosher slaughter).
These are relatively small problems in a book that superbly captures the essence of religion`s teachings with regard to nature and to animals. Such teachings provide one more reason why additional knowledgeable, committed religious people should get involved in increasing study and dialogue on connections between religion and the natural world. The realities of today`s environmental crises demand no less. Replenish the Earth is very helpful in efforts to continue dialogues on the important issues that it considers since it has quotes from many religious leaders, 30 pages of footnotes, and an index.
This is an extremely important and timely book. I hope that it will be widely read and that people committed to religious mandates to preserve the earth will see that it gets into the hands of religious leaders of all faiths, that it is widely discussed by religious groups, and that its message is brought to the attention of religious educators.
Broad coverage but not always deep.......2000-04-13
Broad encyclopedic study of Biblical references, but with little depth about social or historical forces that shape these. For example, I would have liked some discussion of the Victorian Naturalist or the American Transcendentalist. Addition there is no discussion about Creation Spirituality of Thomas Berry or Matthew Fox. Also I think the author has unwritten assumptions, about what is right, such as vegetarianism. I would have also liked some discussion of the common ethical issues in the cultures and religion and why the societies do not seem to match the ideals of their respective religions. There is still a lot of useful information, and some common threads in all religions, such as the needless suffering in animals and stewardship. This is probably not a good first book, for someone interested in the subject.
