Book Description
A mother's true story of her first 18 years living with a retarded child. What held his attention most was the hum of the electric "singing" pole. Feel the heartaches that force a mother to accept her son's institutionalization, and the frustrations of making life better for him. Eleven personal photos and six poems are included in the text. One of the poems "Angels Unaware" was sung and recorded in the 1950s by Dale Evans (the wife of cowboy movie star Roy Rogers).

Book Description
This monograph departs from traditional studies of national cinema by accentuating the intercultural and intertextual links between Malaysian films and Asian (as well as European and American) film practices. Using cross-cultural analysis, the author characterizes Malaysia as a pluralist society consisting of a multiplicity of cultural identities. Malaysian film reflects this remarkable heterogeneity, particularly evident in the impact of the Indian and Hong Kong cinema.
Detailed analyses of a selection of Malaysian films highlight their cultural complexities, while noting the tension between cultural inclusivity and ethnic exclusivity at the heart of this cinema.

Di Baldassara Donato Maestro di Capella della Serenissima Signoria di Venetia in San Marco Il Primo Libro de Motetti a Cinque, a Sei, et Otto Voci Novamente Composti, & dati in luce (Venice: Gardano, 1599)
Book Description
In the past decade of rapid change in the world economy, Randy Charles Epping's
Beginner’s Guide to the World Economy has been the most reliable tool for keeping track of what's happening. The third edition updates the information in previous editions and explains many new concepts.
What is the new economy? What is globalization? Is the euro the final seal on European Union? How is e-commerce transforming our world beyond economics? What is virtual money, and does it have real value? How do social concerns and societal ills (drugs, poverty, AIDS, endangered natural resources) play a part in the rapidly changing world economy. What are multinationals, and do they signal the end of nationalism? These and many other pertinent issues are concisely addressed in the most accessible primer for those who want to be economically literate (and who doesn't?).
Customer Reviews:
Understanding at your finger tips........2007-09-12
If you want to understand the current issues about the World Economy, this is the book to buy. It does not cover the economic theory; there are other books for that. This one is easy and fun to read; especially when you hear the term in the news and understand them.
Best first book if you are curious about World Economy.......2007-06-08
This is an excellent book for a novice/beginner, who is trying to understand the basics and scope of the World Economy in plain english.
What the **** is a stock option?.......2007-03-05
Have you asked this question before? Or any innumerable other ones regarding business or economics?
Well, this is the book for you. Randy Charles Epping is not going to win the Nobel Prize for literature any time soon; but, he has produced an excellent book about what going on in the world economy. His non-jargon based explanations of everything from GDP to stock options to how the Federal Reserve works are enough to shine some light on the, often mystical, world of the Nightly Business Report. Epping answers 81 questions with succinct clarity.
While, I would not say this book is a must read, I would say that if you wanted to know what are this stuff was, you should pick it up.
Dictionary-like economics.......2007-02-02
Beginners's Guide to the World Economy is a good basic introduction to economic issues. The book is very easy to read and it is divided into 81 economic questions. I would say that approximately one third are devoted to economics, another third to financial terms and the final one to globalization (this was my favourite, as the author discusses real-life world economic problems). However, I found that the book tries to be too comprehensive and the depth for each issue is really scarce... but I guess that it is a great substitute for an economics dictionary.
An OK read only if you come to it clueless.....and it does have a bias.......2006-11-21
It seemed like a very good book when I first skimmed it, but when I started to read it I found that it has some very basic info that I just wanted to skip over.
I guess in all fairness, the table of contents is written in a very detailed manner and the book is broken down into something like 81 basic questions. (and the table of contents points to each of them, even when some are only contained on a single page)
The book was amazingly pro-globalization, and I found very little in the way of warnings about it. That's fine, I know there are people who feel globalization is the end-all....but the discussion of Web Based internet companies seemed a bit dated....I guess the book was last edited on 2001....so the crash was probably not happening or so fresh that they were not able to understand it yet.
The discussion of New Economy companies starts out sort of funny to me....trying to somehow describe why "these are different"....but ultimately ends by saying that some say they are no different.....which is more true than not.
I did learn quite a bit from some of the questions and answers....so the book was good...but only if I used it as a reference book of sorts and "skipped the stuff I knew".
Book Description
Long regarded as an underground classic for its gritty and unabashedly erotic portrayal of the Beat years, Memoirs of a Beatnik is a moving account of a powerful woman artist coming of age sensually and intellectually in a movement dominated by a small confederacy of men, many of whom she lived with and loved. Filled with anecdotes about her adventures in New York City, Diane di Prima's memoir shows her learning to "raise her rebellion into art," and making her way toward literary success. Memoirs of a Beatnik offers a fascinating narrative about the courage and triumphs of the imagination.
Customer Reviews:
'Not Porn?' No, but not for prudes!.......2006-11-25
No, it is not porn...but it is definitely not for prudes!
This book gave me a gorgeous, ripe, sensual snapshot of the life and the times of Diane DiPrima and the subculture in which she existed.
The writing sometimes lacked, but overall - it's a juicy peach with a bittersweet aftertase.
Read with one hand free........2005-08-30
This book was loaned to me by a friend who swore that I would have to read it "with one hand free". While the story is very erotic, and the sex scenes are very real and compelling, I would not wholly agree with that statement. This, in part, is due to the fact that love scenes between men and women no longer do anything for me sexually. I prefer erotic writings between two women, and, though there were a few added to this book to spice things up (for me anyways) there were definitely not enough to arouse me to free one hand.
The story, however, is well written. It was an easy, delightful read, one that I polished off in two sittings. It catalogues the life of a young writer coming into her own sexuality, seizing whatever moments of transient, sensual bliss that she comes across. This book is somewhat autobiographical, cultivated from Di Prima's own experiences as a college drop out who, annoyed with the system of 1950`s education, decided to instead pursue writing full time. The main character in the story parallels her life to such a degree that the author had even named her heroine "Di Prima". The character Di Prima also flits about in the underworld of 1950's New York, inhabiting skeevy, infested pads with multiple people, coffee houses, book stores, parks, smoked out bar scenes, forests, fields, and (on one occasion) a country farm. Where the truth is obscured in this bohemian world of sex, drugs, and (pre) rock and roll is only up to the reader's decision. I know little about Di Prima myself, so I like to look at this as a fairly inventive, fictional piece of writing.
This is definitely a worthwhile read. I must admit, were I more inclined to heterosexual love scenes, I would have, indeed, read this with one hand free, seeing as how in every single chapter is a different, vivid description of one of her many sexual encounters. If you are inclined to beat writing, this is a canon of that genre. If you are a fan of erotica, how have you not read this one yet? Read it in a room, alone, or with a partner. It will get your juices flowing, if you pardon the pun.
Memoirs of a Beatnik.......2005-07-17
As someone isn't easily shocked by sex, this book was engaging. I found myself hoping to find happiness within "one" of her sexcapades. However, if you are interested in an easy read, with graphic details. Enjoy. Don't be offended.
Not porn? Important to read?.......2005-06-07
Sorry, but this is both an unimportant work, and pornographic (when every chapter revolves around one sex scene, I think it is safe to accuse a book of being pornographic). Understandably, it has been written that this book was intended to be exploitative, and di Prima wrote it because she needed money. Great. I hold nothing against writers doing what they need to do to make a living. If I recall correctly, Stephen King got his start writing articles for Playboy. With all that said, however, I think it is also important not to hold a book to unrealistic expectations, simply because of the author. Porn, porn, porn. Let's see: chapter 1, sex with Ivan. Chapter 2, recollection of the first time she had sex with Ivan. Chapter 3, sex with Robin (a man in love with Ivan). Chapter 4, Sex with Tomi (a female friend). Chapter 5, Tomi has sex with Tomi's brother. Chapter 6, Sex with 4 other women. Chapter 7, sex with Tomi's father Serge. Chapter 8, sex with young Jack and some guy with big ears while runaway girl watches. And so it goes, through all the chapters. So, if you're looking for a "spank" book, then check it out. If you're looking for a book about the beats from a woman's perspective (as it is boldly proclaimed on the front cover), look somewhere else.
Disappointed.......2004-11-18
I was disappointed with this book, but that could very well be my own fault because of the expectations I took with me when I first started it. I had picked up this book in hopes of finding the female version of On The Road. I wanted a female artistic rendering of the period and art and philosophy and what her thoughts were on what she went through. Instead I found a mediocre telling of sexual encounters. I understand that sexual freedom was a big part of the Beat experience and I certainly have no problem with reading about that aspect of Di Prima's life, I was just disappointed that she basically made it appear that her role in the whole Beat movement had nothing much to do with art or philosophy, but more to do with being a sexual object. Isn't that what women fight against these days?
I'm willing to admit that my own prejudices and opinions and desires are a big part of what made me not like this book. I guess I would suggest that you read it with an open mind and without a lot of great expectations. The writing is ok but not great. The stories are a little on the boring side. There isn't a lot of introspection or thoughts on life and politics and poetry. It seems more to me that her editors told her sex would sell and they cut everything else of any interest or importance out of the book. So to me, the book is far too shallow to be something I'd recommend to anyone else.

MEMOIRS OF A BEATNIK
Manufacturer: The Traveller's Companion
ProductGroup: Book
Binding: Paperback
ASIN: B000H47YUI |
Book Description
Everyone knows a dittohead. In addition to being devoted listeners of Rush Limbaugh, they're also loud, judgmental, and sure they're always right. One of the most common phrases you'll hear them use is "if you only understood politics you'd be a Republican." And from abortion to gay marriage to national defense to fiscal policy, Rush details for them how it only works the Republican way.
Confessions of a Former Dittohead is the true story of how one average American turned away from the lies and distortions of Rush Limbaugh and the Republican Party to become a Liberal Democrat. Originally a diary on the popular website Daily Kos, this amazing book follows red-stater Jim Derych on a personal journey from the heart of conservative darkness to the light of liberalism, as he shares his observations and techniques with a progressive audience in the hopes of winning the battle over what George Lakoff describes as "framing."
In addition to showing how the accumulated experiences of his life-a friend who had an abortion, a gay college roommate, his time spent in the Young Republicans-turned him away from the Republican Party, Confessions also discusses the major political and social issues of our day-abortion, gay marriage, social security, evolution-in order to show how "dittoheads" think, and what liberals and progressives can do to change that thinking.
An incredible personal and political story, Confessions of a Former Dittohead is the most important political book of the year.
Jim Derych lives and works in Tennessee.

Former Dittohead Still a Megalomaniac.......2006-07-22
Condescending is too weak a word for this blog-become-book.
Boasting about no longer being a mindless idiot after 13 years is difficult. Crowing and patting yourself on the back at the same time is a real trick.
What the author is really revealing about himself is naked opportunism. There's no new insight or information here, just a desire to be applauded by his new political compatriots. It will not surprise if he suddenly, in another 13 years, discovers he's been duped again, and writes: "Confessions of a Former Kossack".
Read a couple of his bloviated blog entries to get your fill and save yourself 11 bucks. Or wait a couple of months and pick it up in the remainders bin.
There's Hope for Everyone Else.......2006-06-26
Derych tells us that he'd let Rush Limbaugh lie to him for 13 years - now he's repented and wants to vent. No longer believing in the infallibility of Rush, the Republican Party and Fox News, Derych now has the ability to accept facts that contradict their views.
"It was the complete abandonment of anything remotely resembling intellectual honesty that brought the change," according to the author. Much of the conservative view is based on ignorance; therefore, knowledge is the antidote. "Confessions of a Dittohead" follows Derych's experiences and thinking through abortion, gays in the military, Iraq, economic impact of Bush, Reagan and Clinton tax actions, and polls showing Bush supporters knowledge of Iraq fact much less than Kerry's.
Then we get a number of author insights. Derych suggests not calling Bush a liar (very difficult to prove, and brings about an immediate shutdown of any dittohead's senses), but instead simply a lousy boss (cronyism, "big-government" spender) - much more likely to reach agreement. Claims (by Rush, et al) that this country was founded by Christians are wrong - as evidence, he provides examples from the writings of John Adams, Benjamin Franklin, Ethan Allen, and Thomas Paine. Concluding that because Paul Ehrlich's 1968 "The Population Bomb" predictions didn't occur (yet), therefore global warming won't either (Rush) is stupid. As for the President's Social Security plan, the author's experience as a CFP suggests that most of us are poor investors and the freedom of choices offered would not serve us well.
Interesting and informative; also hopeful - if Derych (and I) can move from wrong (right) to right (left), so can most anyone else!
Amusing, but weak........2006-05-26
The author strikes a few funny notes amid a sea of generally flat prose. But overall, the reader is left with the impression of someone who's bragging about simply switching the people he lets define his views for him. I suggest a funnier title and more revealing approach to take (and I do mean this sincerely, if it's done well) is "Confessions of a Born Follower."
Up from the Depths of Dittohead-Dom, with JOKES!!!.......2006-05-24
Revealing his slow ascent up from the depths of Dittohead-dom, Jim garnered a huge and enthusiastic audience from his debut diary on the behemoth political blog, Daily Kos. We kept asking for more, Jim kept obliging us, and some smart reader pointed him out to IG Publishing.
He came out of the closet, so to speak, but that wasn't the real reason he got the response he did. He would have been welcomed, certainly, as many other recovering kool-aid drinkers have been, but there was something bigger at play.
This boy is funny. Plus he's smart. Sometimes he breaks your heart with his insight into his younger self, as in Chapter 3, Amy's Story, where his knee-jerk condemnation of abortion meets the straightforward biography of a friend. Sometimes he makes you choke with laughter, as in the chapter where his "coming out" to his father as an ex-Dittohead is inadvertantly accomplished on a radio show Jim was sure his Dad would never hear in a million years.
Sometimes you want to crack him over his thick skull when he confesses his difficulty in maintaining a college friendship with a gay friend who also blew a lot of stereotypes Jim had. (That's the other thing he has that's absolutely necessary for such a book. He's brutally honest with himself (hello, looking at you Mr. Million Little Pieces and Ms. Opal Mehta).
He's also honest, yet gentle in many ways, with those who are still in Rush's thrall.
The book is divided in two parts. The first chronicles the steps on his path out of the morally murky smog of Rush-think. The second is a primer in how to approach the Dittohead in your life.
The second half read more haltingly. I think in part that's because my own brain resisted identifying with the ins and outs of Rush-think. That's the same thing, of course, that makes it difficult for me to engage die-hard Rushies successfully. Which makes the second part of the book even more important than the first. Kind of like broccoli, but tastier.
Jim is now on a signing tour with the book. If he's coming to your town (or you're going to Yearlykos or DemocracyFest), go see him and buy a book.
Shining a Light on Rush .......2006-05-22
As might be expected from the title, Confessions of a Former Dittohead sheds light on the Rush Limbaugh phenomena for those who already think he's an idiot. But the pleasant surprise is that it also presents some incisive arguments that could be used in a sincere attempt to convert those who think he's a hero. Should Rush fans actually read this friendly little book, its light and informal style might just make them think again. Derych is neither preachy nor condescending; mostly he's rather modest about his transformation. This isn't so much a tell-all confessional self-exposé as much as an honest mea culpa.
As Derych slowly became disillusioned by a series of events that continued to offer an alternative reality--facts that he couldn't easily dismiss--he started to listen more carefully and question some of the premises. As he did so, he discovered the duplicity of the arguments. One by one, his core beliefs went by the wayside.
Derych describes this transformation in a easy-to-read style, allowing the reader a glimpse of what it takes to undergo such radical change about controversial issues: abortion, gay rights, religion, and fiscal policy, to name a few. Derych's candor allows you to enter the mindset and follow the logic (or illogic). For those who are already on the left, it's an interesting read with some practical advise on how to talk to a Rush fan and score points in the process. For those on the right, if you can get them to read the book, they may be able to empathize and identify with Derych enough to start to chisel away at the façade of what Derych tags "the right-wing reasoning chip."
Derych takes each issue, pulls apart the Rush logic and explains how to crack open the door. As a professional financial planner, Derych is particularly strong on making his case in fiscal matters, including taxes, government spending and Social Security. It seems like arguing with facts would be self-evident, but to the `dittiot' (Derych's term for those who have lost all sense of reason and follow blindly), it is not. Derych argues that dittoheads must be force-fed with truth and he cautions that it is not an easy task mostly because dittoheads have been brainwashed to believe that the "facts" fed by Rush are true - no proof required. There is no critical thinking going on in the brain of a dittohead.
There used to be Republicans who could defend their tenets without resorting to falsifying and distorting information; they may have had a different perspective, but they weren't dishonest and they didn't depend on bogus claims. One could disagree, but both sides were arguing from the same reality. In the last couple of decades that has changed. Derych has made a big contribution to showing how that divide may be narrowed. Like the early days of the Gingrich movement, one small step at a time on a personal level where each cut bleeds a little and needs fresh air to heal. Derych supplies some fresh air.

Book Description
Boreal Shield Watersheds: Lake Trout Ecosystems in a Changing Environment brings together the work of a renowned international group of scientists who specialize in aquatic science and environmental management. They explore the functioning of Boreal Shield ecosystems, focusing on the lake trout, the classic coldwater species of northern glaciated lakes, using it as an indicator of environmental change and as a model to measure the effectiveness of management actions. This book demonstrates how boreal waters have served as a crucible for decades of environmental research into the impacts of nutrient additions, trace contaminants, acid rain, climate change, sport fishing, invasive species, and watershed disturbances. The text builds on this substantial research legacy and explores our ability to manage human interactions with ecosystems across the vast Boreal Shield ecozone of North America, and with other important ecosystems worldwide. It also provides models and new methods of assessing the risk to and the durability of ecosystems in relation to local, regional, and global human activities. Maps and descriptions of several important long-term monitoring sites and an atlas describing more than 3,000 lake trout lakes in the region are special components of the book.
