The Archaeologist was a Spy: Sylvanus G. Morley and the Office of Naval Intelligence
ASIN: 1901965066 |
Book Description
John Pendlebury (1904-41), the `Cretan Lawrence', was shot in the first months of the German occupation of Crete while organizing bands of guerrillas to fight the invaders. Not a professional soldier, Pendlebury was chosen for the task because of his intimate knowledge of Crete, its people and language, acquired through his years of archaeological experience on the island. As Curator at Knossos, successor to Sir Arthur Evans, his athleticism and taste for adventure has taken him all over the island in search of ancient sites. Pendlebury's passion for the ancient world also took him to Egypt, where he was Director of the excavations at Tell el-Amarna, city of the heretic pharaoh Akhenaten and his queen, Nefertiti. At Cambridge in the mid 1920s he won a Blue for athletics, competing with contemporaries such as Lord Burghley, and a first class degree in Classics and Archaeology.
In this, the first biography of John Pendlebury, Imogen Grundon constructs a vivid picture of a brilliant and charismatic scholar-hero, whose life was lived, and ultimately lost, by an ideal of romantic chivalry.
Imogen Grundon is an archaeologist, based in Oxford, who has excavated at Knossos in Crete and Tell el-Amarna in Egypt, as well as elsewhere in Greece, the Near East and Europe.

Psychiatrist and author of On Death and Dying Elisabeth Kübler-Ross has long been considered an expert on the terminally ill, and she is credited with bringing the hospice movement to the United States. Now retired after a series of strokes, and, at 70, facing her own death, she has written The Wheel of Life: A Memoir of Living and Dying, a highly personal memoir. Besides telling her unusual life's story, this book is also a startling treatise on death. Recounting her research with the dying and with those who claim to have "returned" after dying, Dr. Kübler-Ross also writes eloquently about her belief in the afterlife.
Book Description
On Life and Living
Elisabeth Kübler-Ross, M.D., is the woman who has transformed the way the world thinks about death and dying. Beginning with the groundbreaking publication of the classic psychological study On Death and Dying and continuing through her many books and her years working with terminally ill children, AIDS patients, and the elderly, Kübler-Ross has brought comfort and understanding to millions coping with their own deaths or the deaths of loved ones. Now, at age seventy-one facing her own death, this world-renowned healer tells the story of her extraordinary life. Having taught the world how to die well, she now offers a lesson on how to live well. Her story is an adventure of the heart -- powerful, controversial, inspirational -- a fitting legacy of a powerful life.
Customer Reviews:
Moving story of what makes life so worthwhile!.......2006-05-18
Heard THE WHEEL OF LIFE by Dr. Elisabeth Kubler-Ross, the author
of the classic ON DEATH AND DYING . . . here, facing her own death
at age 71, she tells the moving story of her life and what makes life so
worthwhile.
It is love!
As she notes, "I have never met a person whose greatest need was
not love."
She then concludes with a powerful final statement, saying, "It is very
important that you do only what you what you love to do. You may be
poor, you may go hungry, you may live in a shabby place, but you will
totally live. And at the end of your shabby days, you will bless your life
because you have done what you came here to do."
It seems that doing so will make dying easier. Or so it can be
hoped!
Ellen Burstyn's narration added to my enjoyment of the book . . . in
addition, I liked that there was an introduction by the author.
Where is my item ?.......2006-03-13
I never received my product. I only purchased this product as it was of very sentimental value to my mother, however I was bitterly dissapointed to find the product was lost in transit. I would love to say amazon made every effort to find my product, I personally could not believe this to be true. I do appreciate the jesture of a full refund, but I can honestly say I feel totally dishartened by the whole ordeal. I only purchased from amazon as I knew the item was difficult to locate but to pay almost 13 dollars for it to be lost is in my opinion both unacceptable and extremly unsatisfactory. I shall not purchase from amazonm in the future.
An honest Memoir.......2006-03-12
Those who grouse & are dismayed at the second half of the book perhaps have not traveled far enough on their own spiritual journeys yet to understand. I found the book, like all her works, thoughtful, insightful & honest. Having worked in hospice nearly 30 yrs, in part due to Dr. Kubler-Ross, I can honestly say that in hospice you see many things that are beyond the scope of everyday life. The more I see of human Spirituality in hospice paitents & their families the less judgmental I tend to be.
A good book.......2006-01-25
It is definitely a book worth reading. For a week or so, it actually inspired me to go to med school. (I quickly gave it up when I picked up Sam Walton's Made in America, and applied to business school) The author has a very interesting view of death, which is in my opinion, why people think the second half of the book is a little wacky. You don't have to agree with her, nor believe in everything she says. Despite all the wackiness, it's still a good book.
Good Start - Wacky Finish.......2005-03-16
I just finished this book, and am sorry to say I was just shaking my head by the end of it. The beginning was fine and interesting, following her journey from childhood to medical school. Something went wrong in her life when she was in her 40's, and that's when the story got wacky. It was probably the California life-style of the 1970's and all the garbage about channeling the other side, etc. I wanted so badly to plead with her to go back to her family and raise her children instead of running around the country searching for who knows what. It really was quite flaky as she told of spirits having long conversations with her. This poor woman was seeing and hearing things that were not there. She seemed so lost spiritually, and it sounded as though she was estranged from her family. I do not discount her work with the stages of dying, this was an important contribution. But if love was the most important thing of all, that goal seemed elusive to her. Very sad.

Wonderful--great addition to the collection!!.......2007-04-04
This is an AWESOME cookbook, I love the way the recipes are listed in the book, very easy to follow. The ingredients are listed in order to how they should be placed in the machine, there are instruction for 1, 1/2, and 2 lb loaves. The print is large which also makes the recipes easy to follow. I own her whole series of BM cookbooks because I like them so much!! Great variety also--if I have a certain ingredient that I want to use up in my cupboard, 9 times out of 10 I can find a recipe for bread that I can use it in!! Can't say enough good things about this cookbook!!
Books about Bread Make Bread.......2007-01-06
Ms. German experiments with whole grains and honey. Many ingredients are hard to find. Some recipes do not require wheat flours.
CAN'T.......2007-01-04
I WOULD LIKE TO GIVE A REVIEW BUT I HAVE NEVER RECIEVED THIS BOOK. I SURE WOULD LIKE TO HAVE IT.
Waste of paper and money!.......2004-02-10
After having wasted the ingredients to make *five* different recipes from this book, the results of the last attempt, along with the book, are going into the trash. No wonder this book was remaindered! Following the recipes to the letter, I have gotten dry, heavy loaves of bread that were nearly impossible to cut, let alone eat. I used all fresh ingredients, including yeast. When using the recipes in the book that came with my bread machine, I always get excellent results. Love the idea of healthy bread machine recipes. It would be nice if someone would write one!
A Must Have Bread Machine Cookbook.......2004-01-16
This is not only a great cookbook as healthy ingredients go, the recipies are simple and every one we've tried has come out wonderfully. We've made some of the best bread I've ever had with it. This is definitely a must have for bread machine owners!

Keep it close if you care for your fish health!.......2000-06-21
This book covers a wide range of topics in only a few pages. In fact it is pretty good for the beginner, and perfectly suitable for the advanced aquarist. You can learn how to get started and maintain your aquarium, as well as the basics about fish physiological mechanisms. And just when I was thinking this was just another first-step manual, I found a magnificent perspective of fish diseases, with helpful pictures, and detailed data on how to prevent, diagnose and cure a wide range of freshwater and saltwater fish diseases. But that's not all... In the end, I was quite amazed to find an appendix with lots of useful checklists and quarantine procedures in Fish Health Management. So, if you really care for your fish health, this book is a very good choice!

Disappointing - too short!.......2006-03-20
I ordered this book because I love to scrapook, and have a direct sales business with a scrapbooking company. I was looking for inspirational stories to share at my crops or in my newsletters, etc. . . The stories in the book are great, but there is only one per chapter, and there are not that many chapters in the book - maybe seven or so (I've already loaned the book, so I can't go back and look.) For the price, I was expecting more. My recommendation is to go to the library and check it out. It's not something you'll need to read more than once or need to reference often! There are much better resources to get sayings and Scriptures from, and there's not enough stories to make it worthwhile.
It will make you laugh and make you cry, but above all make you remember!.......2005-07-02
This book shares the joy of memories and what that means to so many who have taken up the hobby of scrapbooking. Pick up a copy of this book if you love scrapbooking and you won't be disappointed.

From the supplier: People trying to maximize their communications skills should bear in mind that there are four communication styles: aggressive, assertive, passive and passive-aggressive. The assertive style is the only one which will keep communication lines open and get a person's needs met. This style is open, honest and does not manipulate. People develop their communication styles as children but can change if they realize their style is negatively impacting their quality of life.

Romantic Revolutionary, Indeed! .......2006-11-28
John Reed, Harvard Class of 1910, epitomized the best of the pre-World War I bourgeois radicals. Unlike the vast majority of his Class and class he cast his fate with the working people and oppressed of America at a time when the dominant left bourgeois movement- the Progressive movement- was busy applying band aids to the increasingly inequitable capitalist system. The radical movement is always in need, sometimes desperately in need, of intellectuals to tell its side of the story. Despite some exceptions, like Reed, the intellectuals then, as now, either stood on the sidelines or at most acted as `fellow travelers' to the movement. Reed on the contrary put all his energies into the movement. As a journalist he sought out all the radical hotspots of his time starting with his coverage of the Mexican Revolution, through the various workers' strikes of the 1910's in America culminating in his coverage of the heroic period of the Russian Revolution. His journalistic account of the Bolshevik seizure of power, Ten Days That Shook the World, stands even today as one of the best eyewitness accounts of that turbulent time in Russia.
John Reed's political development also offers today's militant leftists an insight into how the swirl of events drives the best militants leftward. Reed started out in the typically Bohemian milieu of New York City's Greenwich Village and imbibed its avante guarde cultural offerings and its pretensions. However, as the United States lurched into participation into World War I he grew stronger as an anti-war advocate and placed himself on the line to oppose that war. This was the great dividing point in the radical movement of the time. This separated the dilettantes and mere reformists from serious revolutionaries. Not an unusual political development, but an important one.
Under the influence of the Russian Revolution Reed led the left wing of the American Socialist Party on a program of opposition to the war and defense of the Bolshevik Revolution. When the left wing was forced out of the Socialist Party he formed a communist organization based on the centrally of the native American working class as the vanguard of the American Revolution. Opposed to that were left-wingers, mainly foreign born elements based on the various language federations of the old Socialist Party, who essentially wanted to act as cheerleaders for the Russian Revolution-and no much else. The result was the creation of two communist organizations that caused no end of problems both in America and in the Communist International. But the fights to lead the Socialist party leftward and later between the communist organizations are stories for another time, and worth separate space. Read this book for starters.
by the author of "The Dream of the Decade".......2006-03-10
The last full biography of Reed was published in 1967. The Lost Revolutionary was a Cold War attempt at character assassination. Apart from a psychoanalytical epilogue that dismisses his subject as naive, Rosenstone's account is remarkably fair. Reed, brought up in Babbit-style Oregon, was educated at Harvard and at 26 left Greenwich Village's burgeoning bohemia to cover the Mexican Revolution. His political awakening came just before he left for the land of Villa and Zapata, while covering a story on the Paterson silk strike. 'In Paterson,' writes the American biographer, 'Jack had smelled, tasted and felt the spirit of radicalism, and found it good.'
After Mexico and reporting from the Western Front, came romance in the shape of Louise Bryant the sole justification for the title of the book. All this time Reed was writing articles, plays and stories, but for all his worldly experience, they were mediocre against the work of contemporaries such as O'Neil, Yeats and Pound. Reed's greatness would be established by reportage published only a year before his burial at the foot of the Kremlin. Ten Days That Shook The World not only illuminates the trials of revolution, but also shows up the caprice of the winds of change.
An exceptional examination of an exceptional life!.......1999-05-07
An epic tour-de-force which examines the fascinating life of John Reed, the only American to be buried in the Kremlin Wall. An ecclectic mix of personalities - from Lenin to Gertrude Stein, from Lincoln Steffens to Teddy Roosevelt - pass thru the tapestry which was Reed's life, each having their own unique impact on the art which remains. From his childhood in stoic Portland Oregon to his years in Harvard and New York to his coming of age in Mexico covering the Villa revolution, Reed absorbed experience and reflected his concept of justice and equality in his writing. Each stop along the way was preparation for Reed's ultimate mission - to report on the earth-shattering 1917 Russian Revolution. The book "Ten Days in October" is still the seminal work on the topic, and this book delves into the evolution of Reed from middle-class dabbler to full-blown Socialist commentator. Mr. Rosenstone does the man justice - well-documented, fair, and without overt "gushiness". An exceptional read.
The book the academy-award movie "Reds" was based on........1998-09-04
This is the book the academy-award winning movie "Reds", starring Warren Beatty and Diane Keaton, was based on. An epic (but true)love story, you finish reading it in awe at how much life was packed by these people in such a short time.
