I was disappointed in this book because, although the picture on the cover looked more crossword style, the puzzles were all crucigram style. The questions were very hard and several were related to Mexico, which I know little about.

Ignore the cover-and the book.......2006-02-05

The cover suggests that these are conventional crossword puzzles. Actually, each page has perhaps twenty words in a grid that is 90% black squares. Understandably, it takes a greater knowledge of the language to have many interlocking words, but this is silly.
In addition, the words don't seem chosen for any particular purpose in learning Spanish. For example, one clue written in Spanish contains the words Shirley McClaine and _____ La Douce. Great for people who remember the old movie with a French title, but filling in IRMA doesn't seem all that helpful for any likely audience.

The ideas and activities in this book were varied and somewhat adaptable to a variety of audiences and meetings. I am always looking for fresh ideas to use in my presentations and workshops and this book has become a valuable resource and also sparks new ideas in myself.

Icebreakers Only.......2006-07-09

If I had the opportunity to flip through this book in a bricks-and-mortar bookstore, I wouldn't have bought it. I was looking for ways to communicate business and organizational lessons through the use of games and activities. This book is just a list of icebreaker activities without providing any of the "meat" of the lesson the activity should have delivered. Providing references for those of us seeking said content would have helped to fill that gap.

Many of the activities require visual aids. It would have been nice for the publishers to provide graphics to go along with these---perhaps a registration key for a website to download the visual tools? I would be far more likely to use the activities (and, of course, credit the authors) if the tools were easily accessible and not burdomsome to create.

I have every confidence that the book meets its intended purpose and the authors have done a good job. However, I don't feel that Amazon.com is presenting the book for what it is. I also believe the publishers could have done a better job of supporting this publication to make it truly useful to the purchaser.

In general, if you are completely at a loss for how to get people interacting with one another at a meeting or training session, this is a good "creativity sparker" to get you thinking.

Another "Big Book" that doesn't deliver.......2002-11-22

I took a chance and purchased five selections from the "big book" series. I titled a previous review "The Big Book of Disappointment." Too bad. I ought to have saved it for this publication.

Chapter two of "The Big Book of Business Games" is titled, "How to Use This Book." My suggestion? As kindling or compost. In the book you will find 54 activities. The nine dot problem and the human knot are examples of the many common activities found in countless other books.

You'll also find suggestions for "presentation boosters." One "booster" example: Display two flip charts. On one ask what things were valued about how the meeting was run. On the other ask how future meetings might be improved. As part of the description you are reminded to "tear off the flip charts and return to your office. . .celebrate your success and change something needing improvement." In the book, the previous activity actually merits a two page description.

Applying their exercise to their book, I'd say I valued very little if anything. How might future books be improved? Provide NEW activities or suggest creative variations for the countless recycled exercises. Also, be certain the content is relevant to a business audience. A skilled facilitator will find a way to successfully use most any of the activities in this book. However, a skilled facilitator is also likely to have a number of better selections in her bag of tricks to choose from.

Once again if the price entices you to purchase this book, I'd suggest you keep exploring. You will find a number of resource books available on Amazon.com that are significantly better.

The big Book of Business Games.......2001-11-30

Basically from the contents, it can be said to be a very practical book that any manager can use to liven up meetings and more importantly to get the members of the team to come together.
These exercises can be fun and purposeful for the the users and I think I would really like try out some of the great ideas put forth.I run meetings and workshops for my staff and certainly could use the ideas from the book.

Great for the Price.......2000-02-19

I've used a number of the games in this book and found they've helped me achieve my goals with the team. They stimulated converstaion and team building. One game I found particularly useful was the "Tie that Binds" in visually demonstrating how interdependent we are as a team. I found this book a real bargain and a good book for getting started at using games within meetings to build teams, emphasis concepts, and introduce topics.

The story started with a great suspense. I wanted to know what he (the Intern David) had done, who was he and what was about to happen when his pager beeped. I really like the author's style, the way he told his story. I just borrowed this book from the library but I ended up buying one for my collection. Its that good! I will be recommending it to our bookclub. Lots of emotion in the story.

The ending was sad and I kept thinking what went wrong with David. Was it parenting? Or was it David himself. The story, the way it was told, left a lasting impression in my mind.Cold Eyes

A portrait of the addicted person.......2005-12-10

My first up-close experience with drug addiction occurred several years ago at the hospital where I work. The scenario was remarkably similar to that described by Dr. Verghese. A bright, warm, wonderful nurse anesthetist succumbed to addiction despite having attended a rehabilitation program.
In recent weeks a family member has shared with me the frustration of living with an addicted spouse: the lies, the denial, the missing money, the worry about finding a lifeless body in one's bed.
The Tennis Partner is not an optimistic portrayal of addiction, but it is an accurate one. I recommended it to my sibling, and to anyone else struggling to understand the addicted person.

A satisfying read despite inherent flaws.......2004-12-11

Whether or not you have a background in medicine, this book will draw you in and keep you interested. The only parts that may seem a bit tedious to run through are some of the tennis sequences. This may seem odd coming from a tennis player, but reading about tennis is like watching grass grow. However, the sequences do bring other parts of the book together, and they are tolerable.
My only other issue is Verghese's constant romanticizing of El Paso, neighboring Juarez, and their inhabitants. Having lived here for almost three years (*and* having worked as a physician in the hospital he mentions in his novel), I can promise you that the innocence, the bluster, and the graciousness of his side characters is almost completely fictional.
I don't think it would have detracted from the book to portray the city and the people more realistically.

My doctor is an amazing person - not just a great doctor. We spend quite a bit of time talking about life, not just doing the clinical stuff. He recommended "The Tennis Partner" to me and I put it off for about a year before I dove into it. It's absolutely amazing. The depth of the writing is superb and the story captivates you from beginning to end.

Anatomy of Addiction and Relapse.......2002-12-17

Dr. Vergesse has great powers of observation and uses them in a powerful way to record the demise of his young friend through cocaine addiction.

For persons (especially medical Doctors) without intimate knowledge of the power of addiction this should be very informative. For those with personal knowledge (especially medical Doctors) it should also be helpful.

Short but rich in details.......2007-03-08

This is the best synopsis of the Kosovo War and Operation "Allied Force" in particular that you can find, and despite the small number of pages it contains a wealth of information regarding the facts that led to the war, the military operations and, especially the reasons behind the NATO's decision to fight only by air. Great emphasis is given to the role (and mishaps) of Task Force Hawk deployed to Albania and why this contingent was troubled from the beginning. The authors state that Operation "Allied Force" succeeded beyond hope, edging on catastrophe, because it was waged without a strong ground element in place and without real intention to escalate with a ground invasion. They reveal also that NATO was planning for an invasion of Serbia itself through Romania and Hungary and that General Clark had asked for six full US divisions! The book also covers the post-war developments, like the KFOR synthesis, its mission and the problems it faced from the start. This is a very good book, but the reader who wants to go a little deeper on the subject should accompany this with B. Lambeth's excellent "NATO's Air War for Kosovo" also published by RAND.

Interesting but difficult to get through.......1998-12-09

I read this book for a course in social anthropology and while it is a detailed ethnographic monograph it is difficult to understand the language and it would help to know more about the history of the conflict in Northern Ireland before reading it.

A most facinating and informative book!!!.......1998-12-08

To read this book took more time and capacity than I had expected. Most of the students in my group choosed not to read this book, because of its reputation which was rather ambivalent. I decided not to give it up before I had given it a try, and I do not regret a moment... I have to admit that my frustration (but indeed my admiration too) grew during the reading. The theme is a complexe one, but the author has taken his therorethical fundation seriously. As a book most theoretically influenced by Michel Foucault and Friedrich Nietzsche, takes theese two philosophers out of the abstract theroretical discourse and add to it the empirically based reality of Northern Ireland. The manner in which this has been done is elequant; the mixing between the oral histories told by the informants together with the analytical parts in between. The book is absolute worth reading, and the insight one (hopefully) gets through Feldmans narration can be used on several arenas and in different academic diciplins, for my part in social science.

This is an absorbing account well worth reading. The oral history segments are fascinating and informative. The scholarly analysis, though insightful, is not meant for the casual reader. Students of Irish politics will like this book, but they may need a political theorist specializing in the body to help them understand the more involved analytical segments. Worth reading.

"Gian Democracies" is a powerful book. It explains and questions our need for perpetual economic growth-that over time can only lead to ecological disaster. It explains why our present economic system depends on such growth in order to provide jobs and keep our economy going. Our present economic system, fulfills the needs and desires of transnational corporations at the expense to the rest of us. It feasts upon the environment. The authors suggest changing our economic and governing system to a Gaian Democracy which would better meet the needs of individuals and be compatible with our planet. It suggests ways we can move in this direction. This is a good book. It should be widely read, and if taken seriously, could help turn us in the right direction for a sustainable future.
