I read with intererst the story of the Del Buono family as they fought for services for their son/brother. Barbara obviously has tremendous faith courage and strength. Her husband and children, esp. Mary, are also amazing. As the mother of a brain injured son I also am caught in the maze of TBI--and it is not pretty. Barbara has done a good job describing nursing home situations. Even though Nick's nursing home experience was years ago conditions in these homes, at least in Indiana, for TBI survivors has not changed enough. Reading this book has helped give me the strength to continue to fight for services for my TBI son.

I am a nurse and work in a hospital. I ordered the CD version of Chicken Soup for the Nurse's Soul to give to a nursing unit to show my appreciation of their work. But before giving it to them, I listened to the CD. These stories are so touching that most of them brought tears to my eyes. They certainly help nurses remember the reasons we chose nursing as a career in the first place. The CD allows for a quick listen in the break room and several people can listen at the same time. A great CD. Looking forward to another publication on this topic. Thanks

The trend in science education today (long overdue, IMHO), is for hands-on. The closer the student can get to some form of manipulation of whatever they're studying, the better they'll learn the material. Gone or going, thankfully, are the days of the 'sage on stage' teacher who stands at the head of the class dispensing nuggets of wisdom for the students to eagerly gobble up (not that there was EVER that much eager gobbling going on...).

Hence, in many contemporary classrooms, there is move away from the color-the-worksheet-on-the- life-cycle-of-the-tadpole technique, and an introduction OF a real-life tadpole into the classroom itself (which, arguably, has GOT to be more interesting).

So, OUT go the pictures of worms and grasshoppers, and IN come the real insects themselves. One problem: what to do with the lil' nippers (the animals, not the students) once the science lesson is over. In the past, most classroom animals and insects have either been released on the playground or given a "burial at sea" in the staff restroom after school is done for the day.

Not necessary now, thanks to Mr. Dunlap. Covering a VERY broad spectrum of living creatures, from ants and worms to much larger creatures like mice & turtles, Mr. Dunlap not only informs the reader how to humanely "reintroduce" the specimen into the wild, he also provides the reader with some even MORE important information: how to keep the animal/insect ALIVE while it's IN the classroom (what heating elements are best for what type of lizards, e.g., what moss is best for earthworms). THIS may, for some classrooms and students, be the major selling point of the book--how best to keep Timmy's prize salamander he found during recess alive during it's week in residence in the classroom without it getting sick or dying.

While written primarily for teachers and classrooms, it is by no means ONLY for these environments. Families with children who are curious about the natural world (and who frequently collect little "pets" from the back yard or garden--I had a friend who's 3 year old had a pet slug for two days) will find this book not only useful, but very educational as well.

A much needed resource book for schools looking to add animals to their classrooms. Easy to read, but not dumbed down. I enjoy to biting satire found throughout the book. Like: You don't want to breed (this animal) you just think you do.

This noteworthy book addresses its narrow topic with accuracy and effectiveness. Wood's growth, structure, and properties are treated in full. The book explains, in great detail, the techniques for taking wood samples and preparing them for examination. Precise keys for identifying most woods used in furniture and construction are provided. The vivid photography, as well as diagrams and tables, are perfectly integrated.

I've had this book for almost 2 years and it is the best I've seen. It is very well written and very thorough. It begins with an explanation of the structure of wood at the cellular level, in some cases, in rather great depth. There are chapters on techinques for obtaining and preparing wood samples as well as a description of some of the necessary instruments (hand lens, microscope etc). The sections on identification are divided up into softwoods, hardwoods and tropical woods. I will agree that the section on tropical woods is not as deep as the other two sections, but I would say its in proportion to the chances of you happening up on a piece of rare tropical wood and having to identify it. I have sucessfully indentified dozens of woods using this book. Be advised that a microscope is definately needed when using this book, in my humble opinion. It doesnt have to be a megabuck model, but 100-250x would be very helpful. I would highly recommend this book to anyone wanting to go beyond the "if its brown, its walnut, if its white its maple" level, and get deeper into wood identification. ID-ing a chunk of wood is very satisfying and this book makes it possible!

The most informative peice of literature EVER!!.......2007-06-19

After my child was born via a very traumatic cesarean I ached to find more info about VBAC than the few statistics online. I read several books about VBAC, each informed me in their own way but I still felt like I wasn't being told the WHOLE story. Loaded with statistics, personal experience and an impassioned drive to inform these authors have compiled a book that taught me more in the first chapter than I learned in any other book I had read. It validated my feelings of grief, betrayal and anger but more so it left me feeling like I, myself, had done the research in that I felt TRULY informed. I HIGHLY, HIGHLY recommend this to EVERY pregnant woman, every woman contemplating a pregnancy and to every physician. Personally, I think this book should be mandatory reading for every med school student. A++++++!

VBAC highly over rated!.......2006-04-30

No book is a "bible" for any type of birth experience. But A+ for validation; for any woman desiring to VBAC and wants extreme statistics to feel more at peace with her decision.

Its good for a change to have a book that tells the real statistics and really encourages birthing mothers to have VBAC's. Its also good as a balance to the other books that are so pro cesarean and anti VBAC's and are scary and negative. Moms have their right to be well informed! Even if some people would say this book is biased toward only VBAC and ignores 'medical' facts its allright because women are so bombarded with negative scare tactics, and everyone 'informs' us how dangerous a VBAC is, so that book will be the counter balance!

Vital For Women and Men.......2003-08-15

I had been avoiding this book for years, having seen it at the library numerous times and feeling superstitious that reading it would cause me to have a cesarean section! Also, I felt like I "knew it all" when it came to the subject of how hospital interventions lead to unnecessary cesareans. I have taught childbirth education in the past and have had two unmedicated, vaginal births in a hospital environment. Now, I am so grateful I did read it. I tried to read it fairly quickly because I was so eager for the information; yet at the same time, each page offers such a wealth of insight--it requires time and patience. The book offers so many gifts.

I had many myths blown open. First of all, the words "uterine rupture" did indeed once summon visions of a belly literally exploding during labor, causing instant death to the woman and fetus. Now I know that that never happens. I also hadn't thought much about the pain women--at least some women--experience upon having an unnecessary cesarean section. My mother had had one and never referred to anything but gratitude that her obstetrician had saved her life and mine. Also, the one cesarean I was involved with--my one client as a doula who had one--was more disturbing to me and the father of the baby than the mother herself. We all knew it had been unnecessary, but for whatever reason, at least at the time, the mother felt very secure with the experience and did for the first few weeks postpartum.

As I read the words of pain, and then, victory, of so many women affected by this epidemic (which, unfortunately, has hardly changed since this book was written and has actually gotten worse) I experienced a new sense of compassion and understanding about why the VBAC movement is so necessary and powerful and why these doctors need to be stopped! I reluctantly acknowledge that the ultimate power lies in the consumer (it's much more exciting to imagine each of those OB-GYNs getting arbitrary episiotomies). I fear now that women scarcely think twice about the possibility of a c-section. Women have become so accustomed to the possibility that their bodies are unable to birth. It's very depressing. Frankly, it's mostly depressing for the dear little children who are born medicated and without the proper physiological and psychological benefits of a healthy vaginal birth.

What inspired me was the frank, bold way these authors were willing to tackle interventions. Some of them are obsolete now (actually, just one--the shaving) and forceps have largely given way to the vacuum extractor which was just coming into use back when this book was written. Yet all of the information holds true. One thing I fear is that doctors and nurses have become quite skilled at paying all the right lip service to our desires to birth naturally, yet have no true conviction or knowledge regarding a natural experience. Time and time again, I have experienced, both with myself and with my clients, that doctors and nurses know how to reassure us they will not intervene unnecessarily. Yet, they stand by with a knife (or scissors, or internal monitor probes, or any number of gadgets). More than ninety percent of laboring women in America have their vaginas sliced open with scissors! Why is this accepted as okay?!? (For whatever reason, it's not okay for women to get circumcised in certain countries, but here, they can get their vaginas cut up and sewn back together and that's all right. Geez.)

The only area I feel slight disagreement with is the use of the term "purebirth" over "natural birth". I wholeheartedly agree that the definition of "natural birth" has become subject to a lot of unnatural definitions. But I feel it's important to reclaim the term as something that happens in nature, as animals birth, free of fear and free of meddling "assistance."

Currently, my hubby and I are expecting our third baby. We are planning a home birth and this book was very affirming of our choice. I'm so excited to have this little person. I hope women will begin to collectively awaken to the power of birth and the joy that results from being in the process, conscious and aware. It's so incredible.

A Necessity for Birthing Women and the People Who Love Them.......2003-05-17

I can see why this book has become the VBAC bible. The authors are brimming with passion and information. Yes, they are angry... and they have every right to be! They meticulously go over studies and statistics; they tell their own stories and the stories of other women who have undergone cesarean section; they address both the physical and mental/emotional/intellectual impacts of cesarean section and vaginal deliveries.. they leave nothing out.

They obviously advocate VBAC, and they should, as it is almost always the safer alternative. They may be telling you something you don't want to hear, but it is something you MUST hear.

They are outspoken, unafraid, and passionate about the safety and health of birthing women everywhere. This book is fabulous.

Just what I needed!.......2002-05-07

After having my first child by c-section in 1994, I knew I wanted more from my birth experiences. I got ahold of this excellent book and digested every word. My second child was born in 1997 by VBAC and it was the best, most healing experience I could ever imagine. I reclaimed my life, self-esteem, womanhood as I pushed her out. And the greatest thing was that she was a full pound and a half bigger than my first baby!! I love all of my children no matter how they were born, but I always encourage my friends who've had c-sections to get this book, believe, and give it a try. They owe it to themselves!! It TRULY changed my life as a woman, mother, and wife. My husband even read it and cried tears of joy as I pushed my second daughter out. WONDERFUL!!!

Ok book but...........2004-07-05

This book is ok. Being an art history buff, I did learn some facts I didn't know before. But to call this "100 Artists Who Shaped World History" is a real stretch of the imagination. A better title would be "100 Influential Artists". Also, some of the artists included seemed to be filler, just to reach the 100. Plus, I was disappointed on some artist left out, such as Christo and Sisquieros.

The book was thoughful and contained information and facts that inspired me to visit my local museums to view the actual work. I also purchased individual books containing the works of those artists I felt more attached to. Each entry was meticulously filled with fascinating materials that clearly detailed the life of each artist, including anecdotes, their reception in the art world, and was written in a manner that brought these artists to life. The author clearly made thses artists accessible to everyone and was extremely dilligent in her research to include a myriad of women and a variety of genres. Quite the compilation!!!!!!

Nicky kicks *ss with this one. Simply the best book about early rock and roll and who influenced the music we love. Lots of great stories about people you've never heard of. This book will make you go out and buy cds from Europe where much of the artist's music is available in public domain. Or maybe you'll be searching on Amazon. Either way, you'll love it! A great read from a great writer.

I agree with his main point -- in rock and roll, there is nothing new under the sun; everything truly innovative was done by someone over half a century ago (and there's a good chance they were drunk at the time). What Tosches does is tell these stories is a way that will have you laughing out loud and running to the CD store to pick up as much of this music as you can find.

The Rosetta Stone of Early Rock and Roll.......1998-04-26

The best book about the history of Rock and Roll I have ever come across. My goal is to find and hear musis by each of the artists featured in the book, including Ming & Ling, the Chinese Hillbillies, bless their inscrutable souls. The opening paragraphs in the chapter on Big Joe Turner are worth the price of admission itself.

Inspired tales of early rockers.......1998-02-27

Tosches captures the energy of a nascent musical form with wit and no small amount of fury. The Merman chapter alone is worth the price of admission, opening new avenues of appreciation. Seek this one out.
