I couldn't put it down..........2007-07-26
I read this story only a few weeks after losing my own newborn daughter to a severe heart defect. I was amazed at the many similarities between my experience and the author's. I guess it was helpful to know that someone else has experienced this pain and has survived it. The story of Gabriel will always be close to my heart.
Healing words.......2006-12-23
I received this book from a friend at the MISS Foundation after finding out some very difficult things about my son and realizing that he was going to die. Amy's words were so touching and so amazing. There were so many times I had to put the book down to cry because I'd been feeling just the same as she was in the book. It was as if she was reading my mind. Every one who is going through a difficult pregnancy or has lost a child should read this beautiful tribute to a child that will always be loved as every bereved parent has that same hole in their heart where their child should be.
A great review of the most difficult choice ever,.......2006-12-05
This is a great touching read if you are able to accept other people's difficult choices and explaination of that choice. If you making decisions about an HLHS child, this may not be the read for you. It is an inspirational story of dealing with this difficult decision; but it is not a theoretical review of the choices involved.
Being the brother of an individual who has had to go through a decision like this, I was touched and inspired by the story. However, I would never recommend this book to my sister. Read with an open mind while thinking of the personal story at hand. It is one of inspiration and courage. No one wants to have to make a decision like this and the way this situation was dealt with was inspirational no matter your own personal opinion.
So Comforting.......2006-04-06
I was 22 weeks pregnant when we discovered that the precious daughter I was expecting had Patau's Syndrome - a wicked and terminal chromosomal disorder.
Someone recommended Waiting with Gabriel to me and I was overwhelmed by how keenly the author articulated the breadth of my emotions through this hardest journey. While reading it, I often felt like Amy Kuebelbeck was writing from within my own mind.
This book became a beacon of support for me and I continue to refer back to it to help give all my feelings and thoughts clarity, and to remind myself that we are not alone in our sadness. It's also become the book I pass to my friends and family, so that they can have a more intimate understanding of the steps in this never-ending journey of parental love and loss.
Waiting with Gabriel is at the very top of my list of the most significant books I have ever read. It is a must read on so many levels.
No Hope.......2006-04-05
In haste I purchased this book, thinking it was about parents who gave their child a chance at life, needless to say, I was mistaken. If you are looking for an excuse to not fight for the life of your child this book is the answer, but if you are looking for hope, comfort and strength then look elsewhere. As a father, who has been blessed, with a child with a CHD, specifically HLHS, I was saddened to see these parents not give their child a chance. Stay away from this book.

Customer Reviews:
The Real Yzerman.......2006-03-03
Yzerman by Douglas Hunter is a revealing portrait of how an individual star player becomes a champion by transforming his game to a more defensive all around skilled player. He sacrifices his personal time to achieve team-based success and improves the players and organization around him. The book is packed with detail on the draft and how the organization built the team around him. Yzerman gets in depth on how the star changed from a goal scoring all about points man, to the captain who would do the checking or dice in front of a puck. Hunter talks about his off ice experience that Yzerman has throughout his career.
Douglas Hunter has never met or even talked to the famous Stevie Y while he writes this book and probably from my take on the book never even saw him play. As I read Yzerman I found the book was very bland. It was hard to keep reading and picking it up because it was just packed with detail and a bunch of nonsense that had really nothing to do with Yzerman too much. The book just doesn't grab your attention the way watching Steve Yzerman play does. That kind of took the excitement from the book. Yzerman is a great star today and he doesn't really show off his talent but just makes hockey look so easy. He sacrifices his body often and will pass before he ever shoots. I think the book kind of takes away Steve's relaxed playing style. I wouldn't really recommend this book unless you're a die-hard Yzerman fan or a detail wiz.
Absolutely Terrible.......2006-01-23
Let's see, what can I say that might actually be helpful. Let me preface this by saying that I'm a die-hard Detroit sports fan, and have been ever since I moved to Michigan in 1984. I love the Tigers more than anything, but Yzerman is my favorite athlete of all time.
In doing research for any book, a competent author would usually have pages and pages of notes. Through careful editing, only the most important and relevant details would actually be placed in the book itself. However, in this book, Hunter's laziness is evident. It looks as if he conducted maybe 7 or 8 interviews for this book, and in order to fill space, inserted every mundane detail of every interview into this book. The bibliography is shamefully short. Hunter even has the audacity to use information from his book about Tim Horton and insert it into this book to try and fill space. What does Tim Horton have to do with Steve Yzerman? Nothing. I'm not even going to start on the factual inaccuracies.
In addition, the narrative is lost and directionless. Hunter keeps the narrative jumping around in time, going off on tangents that don't contribute anything but waste the reader's time. Hunter also fails to provide details of Yzerman's on ice career, aside from cumulative season statistics. This makes me think that Hunter did not watch Yzerman play much, because anyone who saw Yzerman in his prime would want to describe Yzerman's electrifying play. There isn't even any satisfactory mention of Yzerman's Game 7 overtime winner against St. Louis.
Bottom line, it looks like Hunter was churning this out to try and fill the vacuum in the market for Yzerman books. Do a couple interviews, surf a couple websites, write a crappy book, make a quick buck. This book is very poorly and lazily written; it might be the worst thing I've ever read. And I read a lot. It is a disgrace to Yzerman, books, authors, and humanity. Do not buy this book.
Check your facts!!.......2005-10-26
I was ecstatic when I saw a book based solely on Steve Yzerman was finally being published. I was completely misguided. This book wasn't about Steve Yzerman the person/hockey all-star, this book was about all the things that happened around Yzerman over the last 3 decades. I was also horrified that the author never even interviewed Yzerman. Makes me think I should write a book. I know Gerard Gallant would talk to me and I know that I would remember that he coached the Summerside Hemphill Pontiac Western Capitals who won the Royal Bank Cup in 1997. Which leads me to the comment that not only was this book a huge disappointment because it gave us nothing about the real Yzerman, but it was replete with errors. Essentially it is wrong to have this book in the non-fiction section of the bookstore because most of the information is so inaccurate that the novel is fictional. Don't waste your money.
Good but Not Great.......2005-01-17
I read Hunter's book on Scotty Bowman and thoroughly enjoyed it. Likewise, "Yzerman" is a good book told by this strong storyteller. The factual errors (noted here in other reviews) brought the breezy read to a screeching halt for me, but it didn't prevent me from liking it and sending my copy on to friends. If you're a Detroiter (or a transplant) you'll enjoy the look back on Yzerman's early days with the Wings - which went largerly unnoticed thanks to the Tigers surge in the standings. The factual stuff is the only reason I give it a four-star and not a five. I highly recommend the Bowman book.
An Echoing Of Sentiments.......2005-01-13
I was about to write a review as soon as I finished reading this book because I was so eager to put something else on the page because of the two unfair and extremely negative reviews. DON'T PAY ATTENTION AND I DON'T KNOW WHO FOUND THEM HELPFUL PLEASE!!! The book is a Masterpiece and for a more thorough explantion please refer to the other five star review they said it perfectly. Thank You Douglas Hunter for this work I LOVED IT!!!
Masterpiece all the way. STEVIE Y ROCKS!!!!

Terminator 2 Judment Day.......2003-12-10
Terminator 2 Jugment day was writen by: James cameron and william Wisher and Editor: boobie chase. this story is a good for people who are into action. this story takes place in Los Angeles 2029 were machine took over the world and sent a machine to protect John Conor form the terminator in the present day in 1984. the machines sent the terminator to kill John conor so he won't grow up and be the leader of the human race and defeat the machines. the last termenator killed 20 people before it was destroy, now his target has change and it's no longer sarah conor but its her 10 year old son John conor, now they have to fight for the human race.
A pre-DVD-era movie gem..........2000-11-10
Before the T2 Ultimate Edition DVD came out, this book was probably one of the most exhaustive sources of information regarding the movie, along with `The Making of T2' paperback. It's basically the final draft of the screenplay along with production notes and anecdotes about each scene. There are also hundreds of mostly black-and-white stills that correspond to each scene as the script goes on. Also included are the many moments that were cut from the theatrical release, most of which, thankfully, has been restored in the Special Edition. This includes Sarah's dream with Kyle Reese, The Dysons at home, the garage head surgery, T-1000's "glitching", and several other notable omissions. And as you read the screenplay, you'll see that quite a few of the lines spoken in the film differ from what is written. Some of the final ad-libs and slight changes of premise are discussed in the scene notes, and the various reasons (if any) for the slight alterations.
The book also devotes a chapter to parts of previous drafts that included many scenes that were never filmed, mostly due to production costs, as well as notes and commentary about them. The most notable almost-scene is the time machine room, where the resistance sends Reese to 1984, and the second Terminator to 1994. Another abandoned moment is the T-1000 wreaking havoc at the Salceda camp (the trailer-park/junkyard-looking place in the desert) following the departure of the three heroes. This scene would've shown more T-1000 morphs and `gags'. Like the photos that correspond with the final script, the storyboards of these lost moments are shown along with the script to give you an idea of what each scene would've looked like.
I found the most interesting part to be the introduction by co-writer/co-producer/director James Cameron. He talks about the grind of completing T2 in just a year, and probably his most profound revelation about himself: that writing the script is his least-favorite part of movie production. I found this little revelation to be rather ironic, because I always felt that his scriptwriting ability is his strongest suit. Well, maybe not with `Titanic', but that's me.
Sadly, just about all of the stuff discussed in this trade paperback, and then some, has been incorporated into the Special Features disc of the Ultimate Edition DVD. If you've already entered the digital age of movie technology, this book is pretty much just a relic of the pre-DVD era.
`Late!
Fantastic detailing of excellent film.......1999-10-05
I really enjoyed Terminator 2. It had some great scenes that the movie left out - like scenes with Kyle in the future and in Sarah's dream. Also had more characterization because you could read what the characters were thinking. Would have liked to have had the scene where the "learning chip" is turned on put in the movie. Mr. Frakes described a poignant moment when Miles Dyson dies. Highly recommend this book to all T1, T2, and sci-fi fans. Enjoy!
A mind blowing screenplay.......1999-09-05
James Camerons follow up to the Terminator has recieved both critical acclaim and criticism. I for one, loved the first Terminator movie. Terminator 2 was a worthy followup to the series. The action, the drama, the message, it was all there. Sure, some of his was hammered home, but its such a fun ride, you don't care. The screenplay itself is remarkable. It contains commentary and scenes that didn't make the final cut. For all you how need a testement to Camerons genius, this is it.

Rolmaster Arcane Companion- What a book.......2001-02-26
To all Rpg gamers out there. This book is a must have for your collection. I presently do not own this book but borrowed a friend's and WOW. The Rolemaster game gets even better with this probably the last and never to be seen again Arcane Companion. The book has spell lists that have never been seen before and has its own spell failure tables that refect the danger of using such awsome power. This book is incredible, it complements your already owned books of Spell law and Arms Law for Rolemaster. If you don't have Spell law then this book stands on its own as a base list for many of the magic classes. This book brings in more classes with thier own magic lists than there was previous to this publication and while these character types use only Arcane spells some of the more common casting classes can use Arcane lists as well. This book is excellent, all one would need is this book and the main book and you have one wild game going. I highly recommend this book. I also say get it while you can because ICE, who makes these books is no more so buy while the product is still there or end up crying over your dice for lack of it. Play on...

Project Management made easy.......2005-08-12
This book was able to help me understand Project Management a lot easier. At the time i was doing a project management course, and the subject was very difficult for my collegues and I to comprehend. But as we read this book, we were better able to understand the subject a lot better. Thank you Amazon you have made learning a whole lot easier.
Thorough but dull.......2004-11-11
Thorough, comprehensive, and dull as dirt. I have three major complaints about this book (1) it's boring, (2) it insults my intelligence, and (3) the authors are practitioners but don't sound like it. They sound like academics who are divorced from the real world.
I'm not a PM but I've been involved with a lot of projects and many of the things the authors say to do strike me as ridiculous. Such as:
* Having an icebreaker even if everyone already knows each other.
* Developing a formal team contract about what rules the group will use to interact even if there is already a culture within the company that implies those rules.
* Having a TEAM meeting to define all the steps to finish a project to the agonizing level of detail of breaking down a business plan into "a series of interim deliverables such as an outline, the rough draft, final draft, and final draft with illustrations."
Yes, in theory, that's a good way to run a project, but in reality it will probably just irritate your team members.
Not that there isn't a lot of good material in this book. It covers everything you need to know and is very thorough. Just take what seems reasonable and leave the rest. If you want a more entertaining read that teaches the fundamentals but not the micro-details check out Lessons in Project Management by Tom Mochal and Jeff Mochal.
An essential book for all project managers.......2003-04-16
Whether you are a project manager, someone who manages project managers or the poor soul picked to "manage" that career-killing, out of control project, this book is for you.
Breaking down the practice of project management into easy to learn steps, Martin and Tate take you through the basics of project management.
Using the principles defined by the Project Management Institute (PMI) and the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK) Martin and Tate take you through each step, from assembling your team and assigning roles through to completion (and celebration!).
If you are uneasy about managing projects or simply don't know what is entailed, this book will put you at ease. Once you understand the basic principles of managing a project (any project!) and lay out the steps defined, it is easy to bring your projects under control.
Whether you take the Martin-Tate class on Project Management or not, this book belongs in your library. As with any good reference book, you'll find yourself referring back to it over time.
Great Resouce for New Project Managers.......2002-12-21
Paula Martin and Karen Tate have created an excellent guide for those transitioning to the role of project manager. This book is well organized, well written, and presents the complicated topics of project management in a straightforward and easy to understand fashion. The CORE Project Methodology (CORE PM) presented in the text differs from most mainstream methodologies in its simplicity, yet it provides all of the key functionality needed to manage the project life cycle.
The authors emphasize four of the five PMI project process (initiation, planning, execution, and closure), and embed the fifth (control) as a thread running throughout the other four. As most project managers would agree, planning is the key process in a successful project, and this is where the authors have focused their attention. Their treatment of the planning process, from identifying scope through building the project schedule, is presented in a step by step manner which is quite easy to understand and follow.
The text presents several tools and techniques that the new project manager can employ to involve the project team in the planning process. These tools and techniques will help develop a sense of ownership in the project by the team.
All in all, this book is an excellent introduction to all aspects of project management, and provides some simple, yet effective, tools and techniques for managing the project life cycle.
Best book for new project managers.......2002-11-22
If I had to recommend just one book for the novice project manager, this would be the book. Nicely designed, easy to read and well organized. This book has a practical orientation so it will not be satisfying to the academically inclined but if you are starting your first project and are looking for help then GET THIS BOOK AND READ IT.

Book Description
Bankers, philanthropists, scholars, socialites, artists, and politicians, the Warburgs stood at the pinnacle of German (and, later, of German-American) Jewry. They forged economic dynasties, built mansions and estates, assembled libraries, endowed charities, and advised a German kaiser and two American presidents. But their very success made the Warburgs lightning rods for anti-Semitism, and their sense of patriotism became increasingly dangerous in a Germany that had declared Jews the enemy.
Ron Chernow's hugely fascinating history is a group portrait of a clan whose members were renowned for their brilliance, culture, and personal energy yet tragically vulnerable to the dark and irrational currents of the twentieth century.
Amazon.com
All three of Ron Chernow's books are lengthy and solidly researched, but his background as a journalist shows in his ability here to convey complex material in terms of vivid characters and a well-defined theme. As in his National Book Award-winning business history (The House of Morgan) and his comprehensive biography of John D. Rockefeller (Titan), in The Warburgs Chernow employs marvelously detailed material to trace a single overarching story: the riveting and ultimately tragic odyssey of German Jews. The Warburgs were Hamburg's preeminent banking family from the 18th century until Hitler's Third Reich forced them to hand over their business to Aryans in 1938. But they also boasted among their family members a celebrated art historian (Aby Warburg), a Nobel Prize-winning scientist (Otto Warburg), and the financial angel of the New York City Ballet (Edward Warburg). Two of the "Famous Five" brothers married American women at the turn of the 20th century and became honored members of the Wall Street establishment, so Chernow's lively narrative imparts important U.S. social and economic history as well. But don't let all those fancy credentials intimidate you: The Warburgs features enough flamboyant personalities and high-class gossip to make this as entertaining a read as the latest issue of People magazine. --Wendy Smith
Customer Reviews:
hardcover edition: hard to pick up, but harder to put down.......2007-01-04
This great novel-like biography makes one almost feel like a member of the Warburg family (which Chernow correctly determined was a family worth reading about). On the side, this book also provides a nice history of Zionism and gives a seemingly accurate flavor of the early twentieth century experience of German Jews (and more generally of accomplished immigrants to America around the turn to that century). Chernow's verbal precision makes his writing a pleasure to read, but also limits the pace - so set aside a lot of time and enjoy!
The Dignity of Their Tragedy.......2006-08-31
They were minor Court Jews. Money-lending was created by anti-semitic barriers. Court Jews identified with authority figures. Ancestors moved to Altona, an area under Danish rule. It was near Hamburg. In 1773 a Warburg moved to Hamburg.
The Warburgs were nearly incestuous in an attempt to keep the banking riches in the family. They suffered from manic-depression and schizophrenia. The Warburgs engaged in empire building by courtship. The Hamburg ethos was sombre and middle class. The Warburgs and Schiffs made a matrimonial alliance in 1895. The Warburgs were strategic, as it turned out, but they did not engage in arranged marriages.
Paul Warburg, the husband of Nina Loeb, was never at home on Wall Street. He became a great theoretician of central banking. Felix Warburg, to the consternation of his father-in-law, Jacob Schiff, built a Gothic mansion on Fifth Avenue. Lillian Wald's settlement house on Henry Street was founded by the Schiffs and the Loebs.
Aby Warburg of Hamburg, a private scholar, established the Warburg Library. Aby was a pioneer of interdisciplinary study. Paul Warburg, located in America, worked after the crash of 1907 for banking reform with Nelson Aldrich. The Aldrich Plan of 1911 called for a National Reserve scheme. Many of the ideas survived in the Federal Reserve Act. In 1914 Paul Warburg began to serve on the Federal Reserve Board. Felix Warburg headed the Joint Distribution Committee for Jewish charities.
After the First World War Aby experienced periods of madness and luciditiy. Max Warburg traveled to America to meet with government leaders to explain the need for the reduction of reparations and the hyper-inflation troubling Germany. Erwin Panofsky and Ernst Cassirer were professors at the university in Hamburg that Aby and his brothers helped to found. Aby was treated at the clinic of Ludwig Binswanger. Freud took a personal interest in Aby's case. Aby left Kreuzlingen, the clinic, for good in 1924. His breakdown had dated from 1918. Aby died in 1929. His associates Gertrud Bing and Fritz Saxl brought out the first two volumes of his collected writings in 1932. Kenneth Clark has stressed his importance to art scholarship.
Felix supported Jewish farm settlements in Soviet Russia until they were taken over by the state in 1930. Paul Warburg had never believed in perpetual prosperity. Paul's advice had cushioned the Warburgs in the crash, (they had moved out of stocks). Paul issued public warnings in March 1929 foreseeing the crash and the Depression.
In Germany Max, in Hamburg, treated the fortunes of Felix and Paul as bank reserves. Paul lost his fortune upholding the Warburg honor. Max had been tempted to overextend by his imaginary safety net. THE ATLANTIC MONTHLY published Jimmy Warburg's poetry. He was Paul's son. Paul had tended to be straitlaced. Paul died in 1932. The Warburgs did not believe they would be driven from Hamburg. In 1933 the Warburg Library was moved to England. Kristallnacht ending Max's stay in Germany. He and his family ended up in the United States. His brother Fritz was detained and his passport was revoked. Finally he and his wife were permitted to leave for Sweden. Max's daughter Lola was one of the people in England devising the Kinder Transport program.
Eric Warburg, Max's son, saw Hamburg again in 1945. It had been half destroyed by saturation bombing. Eric and his son Max did resume banking careers in Hamburg. Unconnected institutions under the influence of other members of the Warburg family existed in London and New York. The book is fabulous. It is a family saga describing an array of interesting and very brave people.
Interesting and insightful!.......2006-04-24
This was a great book to read and a very interesting story about one of banking's oldest and greatest families. It was wonderfully written and has numerous insights on what it takes to be a success. Ron Chernow seems to have an eye for picking out the important little details as well as giving the reader a great sense of the big picture. Also some great history lessons about WWII. It gave me a view of the war which I hadn't seen before from Jews who were at the top of the economic scale. The history lesson was worth the entry fee. Highly recomended!
Another beautifully written biography by Ron Chernow!.......2006-04-02
I didn't think a book about the Warburg Dynasty could be all that interesting: How wrong I was! I enjoyed every page by this delightful author who can turn the most mundane item into juicy reading material. I savored every page. Excellent; may I also recommend "Titan" by Ron Chernow? It, too is an amazing biography filled with insight and powerful revelations about the world's richest man.
Chernow's Brilliantly Capitivating Biograpghy of a Prominent Jewish Banking Family of Hamburg and New York.......2006-01-25
In prototypical style Chernow presents this classic story of the building and dismantling of a briliant Jewish banking family which developed in Hamburg, Germany, London then New York City. The cast of characters including dominating men and women from the 19th and 20th century who perservered through numerous Depressions, recessions, loss of matriarchal and patriarchal family heads and lastly the Holocaust. Great writings not only recounts their actions but their reasons adn their innermost thoughts. Their idiosyncrasies are fortold and explained. Numerous analogies are made to bring you to the forfront of this captivating historical family. This is an epic story so well told you will see aspects of your own family in the host of characters. Brilliant read.
Book Description
Tells the history of the campaign in a lively manner.
Book Description
Conservation was the first nationwide political movement in American history to grapple with environmental problems like waste, pollution, resource exhaustion, and sustainability. At its height, the conservation movement was a critical aspect of the broader reforms undertaken in the Progressive Era (1890-1910), as the rapidly industrializing nation struggled to protect human health, natural beauty, and "national efficiency." This highly effective Progressive Era movement was distinct from earlier conservation efforts and later environmentalist reforms.
Conservation in the Progressive Era places conservation in historical context, using the words of participants in and opponents to the movement. Together, the documents collected here reveal the various and sometimes conflicting uses of the term "conservation" and the contested nature of the reforms it described.
This collection includes classic texts by such well-known figures as Theodore Roosevelt, Gifford Pinchot, and John Muir, as well as texts from lesser-known but equally important voices that are often overlooked in environmental studies: those of rural communities, women, and the working class. These lively selections provoke unexpected questions and ideas about many of the significant environmental issues facing us today.
