Oustanding depiction of a pioneering man.......1999-10-13
This book was marvelous. It gave the reader a vast overview of the life and times of one of the most prolific civil rights activists. it chronicled his life and told of achievements such as his founding of the Brotherhood Of Sleeping Car porters, the Leadership Conference on Civil Rights, and his membership in Phi Beta Sigma International Fraternity, Inc.
The book is an excellent educational read, and has many little known FYI tidbits

Book Description
This book is about the transition that musicals went through when they traveled from the stage to the screen. While the approach is critical, the style is readable and yields fascinating knowledge on the many things that did and didn't happen as theatre and film have merged throughout the past century.Hischak'sanalysis covers productions from The Desert Song (1927), to Chicago (2002).
Customer Reviews:
A pretty good resource.......2006-03-03
This book is unique in that it examines the film musical with relation to that of Broadway, its direct ancestor. It focuses on the specific movies that were based on earlier Broadway shows, and describes the common changes that happened in this process, including the tragic and often inexplainable cutting of dozens of songs from the original score, the differing casting choices, and the fact that many musicals that flopped in one medium were successes in another. It is a pretty thorough work, including movies that were made during the late 20s with the arrival of the sound film and stretching right to the present day. It is unique in focus, and therefore valuable to anyone who wishes to examine differences between the musical on stage and screen.

This is the most mesmerizing book on wordplay to come along in years. Ross Eckler examines such eternal logological favorites as anagrams, palindromes, and word squares, as well as words that play in other ways. Here are words with all letters in alphabetical order, novels written without the letter "e," and dozens of ways to transform one word into another. Take "heathery," for example. How many times can you delete one letter and have a new word remaining? Or consider "add." What happens when you shift each letter one place down the alphabet? How about eight places? If you love words, this masterpiece is irresistible.
Customer Reviews:
The Fabulous Book of Letterplay: A Masterpiece.......2002-12-01
Ross Eckler has synthesized 30 years of developments in the field of wordplay in a single, scrupulously organized volume. To accompalish such a task must have required a Herculean effort of mental strength! He coined the term "letterplay" to distinguish it as written wordplay involving, for the most part, the combinatorial effects achieved by manipulation of the letters of the alphabet. The best-known types of letterplay serve as a starting point--anagrams and palindromes--that lead to the twilight zone of language where the alphabet dances like a mysterious diva, showing words as they're rarely seen. In fact, Eckler has edited Word Ways magazine ever since 1970, the magazine that ushered in what many believe is the Golden Age of Wordplay. More wordplay has appeared in English in the past 30 years than in any language in the history of the written word. To "read all about it," buy this indispensible book! There is none like it, and there will never be another like it. Eckler knows all, and tells all!
lots of information, lots of errors.......1997-10-10
The book addresses letter and word play in such breadth as to command authority. The frequency of errors in its examples and tables, however, gives an opposite impression. I soon found myself playing a different game than any described in the text: looking for errors. (For example, a lipogram supposedly lacking the letter H contains the word "the"; another supposedly lacking the letter A contains the word "day" (p. 4). At least 3 of 100 purported palindromes on pp. 32-4 are not quite: "Tense I 'snap' Sharon's roses, or Norah's pansies net"; "Evil is the name of a foeman as I live"; "Stephen, my lad--ah, what a hymn, eh, pets?") I found 11 in the first 50 pages, and I would not be surprised if I missed some. Then I quit: it was less challenging than most of the play described in the book.
A wonderful book, second only to Borgmann's classic LOV........1997-06-19
Ross Eckler's latest book on wordplay is destined to become a milestone in recreational linguistics. It is second only to Dmitri Borgmann's 1965 classic Language on Vacation. Eckler's offering should bring recreational linguistics (or wordplay, or logology) to a whole new generation of word enthusiasts. Great, great, great

Outstanding book for lovers of the English language........1997-02-09
Firstly, Ross Eckler is truly a grand master. He presents the distillation of several decades of study of the subject. I read the book almost in one sitting, cover to cover, and discovered many new and fascinating word plays. For example:
a) Exquisite 'e-less' texts, i.e. texts without the letter 'e'
b) Phenomenally palindromic dialogues (e.g.
ADAM: Madam, I'm Adam.
EVE: Name of a foeman?
ADAM: O, stone me! Not so.
EVE: Mad! A maid I am, Adam.
This goes on for two pages with every sentence by Adam and Eve being palindromic)
c) Amazing acrostics
d) Challenging 'chain-link' sentences. (e.g. tHE HElicoptER ERneST SToLE LEavES EScaPE PErilous etc.)
e) Tantalizing transpositions (e.g. five transpositions of an eight letter word; alerting, altering, integral, relating, triangle)
f) Transpositional poetry (e.g. there is a beautiful sonnet about 'Washington crossing the Delaware' and each line of the sonnet uses the alphabets in the phrase above)
g) Appropriate anagrams (e.g. DORMITORY, dirty rook; A GENTLEMAN, elegant man etc.)
There are two similar books that readers may find interesting.
1) A pleasure in words by Eugene T. Maleska, published by Hamish Hamilton, 1983
2) The play of words by Richard Lederer, published by Pocket Books, 1990
Thank you Mr. Eckler and Happy Reading to all.

Book Description
Nazism is usually depicted as the outcome of political blunders and unique economic factors: we are told that it could not be prevented, and that it will never be repeated.
In this explosive book, Guido Giacomo Preparata shows that the truth is very different: using meticulous economic analysis, he demonstrates that Hitler's extraordinary rise to power was in fact facilitated -- and eventually financed -- by the British and American political classes during the decade following World War I.
Through a close analysis of events in the Third Reich, Preparata unveils a startling history of Anglo-American geopolitical interests in the early twentieth century. He explains that Britain, still clinging to its empire, was terrified of an alliance forming between Germany and Russia. He shows how the UK, through the Bank of England, came to exercise control over Weimar Germany and how Anglo-American financial support for Hitler enabled the Nazis to seize power.
This controversial study shows that Nazism was not regarded as an aberration: for the British and American establishment of the time, it was regarded as a convenient way of destabilising Europe and driving Germany into conflict with Stalinist Russia, thus preventing the formation of any rival continental power block.
Guido Giacomo Preparata lays bare the economic forces at play in the Third Reich, and identifies the key players in the British and American establishment who aided Hitler's meteoric rise.
Customer Reviews:
Also conjured by Great Britain: WW I and the Soviet Union!.......2007-08-26
This book exposes Great Britain as the master geopolitical chess player of the late 19th to mid-twentieth centuries, and reveals the USA as her successor on the world scene. While this rather sweeping claim would probably not be rebuffed by many, Dr. Preparata's claims regarding the extent of Great Britain's power and manipulation are truly breathtaking.
I was convinced of the basic arguments that Dr. Preparata made concerning Great Britain's economic and political machinations. He cites multiple contemporaneous and modern sources in four different languages to support his historical accounts. The economic history alone is enough to prove that Great Britain and the US colluded with the Soviet Union to set Germany up for a big fall.
The final brief chapter makes two assertions that I will mention here. The first assertion is that "(t)he present geopolitical policy of the United States is a direct and wholly consistent continuation of the old imperial strategy of Britain". The other main assertion is that the Allied elite's redacted version of history we've been taught, especially the self-serving anti-German tirades, is scandalously false. I can only agree with Dr. Parata, as far as he goes, but in his attempt to set the record straight he also tells only part of the story. I do not question the author's motivation, for I think he means well, but I would like to point out a few things that I noticed. To borrow an expression, if something seems to bad to be true, it probably isn't.
The author's main thesis is supported by more documentation than most readers would ever be able to digest, much less gain access to. Many of the books in the 10-page bibliography must be long out of print and found in only a few major libraries. Of books that are accessible, however, I note that the author relies heavily on the works of David Irving and Carroll Quigley. If you are not familiar with these authors, I recommend doing a quick search of their works on this website, specifically "Hitler's War and the War Path" by David Irving, Carroll Quigley's "Tragedy & Hope: A History of the World in Our Time". While Shaw and Quigley would make for valuable background information, I wouldn't rely on them to verify points of historical fact.
Dr. Parata cites some interesting historical figures of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, who, while once highly influential, have unfortunately been eclipsed by time. The influential geographer, and some say, founder of geopolitics, Halford John Mackinder, receives a fair mention in the early chapters. Later on, Dr. Parata states that "Hitler hadn't read Mackinder". Perhaps Hitler himself had not read Mackinder's works, but the Third Reich interpretation of the Heartland (or "Earth Island") theory would seem to be based in part on Mackinder's earlier work (much to Mackinder's dismay), as well as Bismark during the Second Reich, and German writers including Oswald Spengler and Karl Haushofer leading up to and during the Third Reich. Preparata implies that Great Britain was guided by the principles of geopolitics, but omits Germany's history of Geopolitik. There is a lot of information on Geopolitik on the Internet.
Thorstein Veblen, a Norwegian-American economist and sociologist, predicted the rise of the Third Reich with uncanny accuracy. I sensed that the author felt a special affinity with Veblen, perhaps partly due to similarities in their respective fields of study, and perhaps also due to their shared heritage as European-Americans. They also seem to share an affinity for tortured syntax, though Preparata is much more readable!
Montagu Norman, who was governor of the Bank of England from 1920-44 is perhaps the evil genius of the book. Norman was at the forefront in the Anglo-Saxon intrigues that tampered with the German political system, successfully creating a situation where a reactionary government would come to power. There is another excellent and detailed treatment of Norman's machinations in Webster Tarpley's "Against Oligarchy", unfortunately unavailable on Amazon, but available (for free) on Mr. Tarpley's website, which is easy to find. An understanding of these economic intrigues is essential for understanding (and believing) the rest of "Conjuring Hitler".
I was, in the end, disappointed and frustrated by the fact that the economic analysis stopped somewhere near the end of WW II. In the conclusion, the author jumps to the present to condemn the US for following in the imperial footsteps of Great Britain, but says nothing of the highly suspicious "economic miracles" of Japan and West Germany following closely on WW II. He makes brief mention of the IMF and "Marshall aid", thus repeating the received history he decries, and on a topic where he should know better, political economics.
Preparata presents Germany as a hapless victim of the Machiavellian Anglo-Saxon intrigues. At the end of his book we are told that everyone lives unhappily ever after under the thumb of the oligarchical hegemon, America. I'm afraid it's not as simple as that. You can read Paul Manning's "Martin Bormann: Nazi in exile" to find out how Germany, while losing WW II militarily, actually became an economic winner. Read "Unholy Trinity" by Mark Aarons and John Loftus to find out about Anglo-American and Vatican collaboration with Nazi war criminals. And don't look now, but Germany is attempting to foist a neo-Bismarkian hegemony on the European Union.
While my review may be the most negative to date, I still highly recommend this book, but I believe it is as much an anti-Anglo-Saxon polemic as it is a scholarly study. However, it presents information and an important viewpoint that you won't easily find elsewhere.
Excellent Research, Great Analysis, Bold Move........2007-06-21
The book is worth buying just for the bibliography. Preparata has done a wonderful job assembling reference material and it is apparent that he has read and digested that material. This is a must read that helps move conspiracy theory towards conspiracy fact. Excellent anaysis throughout. My only complaint is that the author wants to prove his erudition through his vocabulary - but I suppose that can be a learning opportunity for those of limited vocabulary with a good dictionary or access to the Internet.
Although many of these ideas have been expressed by Sutton, et al., Preparata goes further and broader than his predecessors and those so in a style that keeps one engaged and eager to learn more.
Conjuring.......2005-12-16
A controversial, precise, intriguing, original book that intrigued me and suggested a new version for the events that shaped our recent history.
The telling of a different story........2005-10-20
Are you interested in the political climate of the War on Terrorism? If you read Noam Chomsky and study his analysis of the U.S. role in recent history then Guido Preparata's "Conjuring Hitler" is a must read because it will eco the voice of intellectual dissidence.
This author re-sets the political stage of the 1930's to expose the real magician behind the smoke and hand trick, American's history books call the victory of WWII. If you can not imagine anything worse then Hitler it is because it is taboo to ask- who could be worse then a Nazi? This book is loaded with the keys for doors our education and culture does not encourage to be opened.
Allow yourself the temptation of cracking open the dictionary, or google searching here and there. Often I find reading history and economics a panacea for insomnia but the opposite is true here. Once I started reading "Conjuring Hitler" I found it difficult to put it down. This author rewards the reader with his own style which is an added bonus for anyone interested in the relationship between history and current events. I encourage you to read the book.
Explained so many things!.......2005-10-08
This book is incredible! So dense with vital information and so well supported~ this changes the way I have always thought about this era of history. The world is never so simple as the good guys and the bad guys and this book contains the proof for that leading up to WW2. I'm really hard to convince along these lines, but this book has blown me away. I'm a believer.

Choosing a President: The Electoral College and Beyond
ASIN: 0300109687 |
Book Description
Americans currently choose their president through the electoral college, an extraordinarily complex mechanism that may elect a candidate who does not receive the most votes. In this provocative book, George Edwards III argues that—contrary to what supporters of the electoral college claim—there is no real justification for a system that might violate majority rule.
Drawing on systematic data, Edwards finds that the electoral college does not protect the interests of small states or racial minorities, does not provide presidents with effective coalitions for governing, and does little to protect the American polity from the alleged harms of direct election of the president. In fact, the electoral college distorts the presidential campaign so that candidates ignore most small states and some large ones and pay little attention to minorities, and it encourages third parties to run presidential candidates and discourages party competition in many states.
Edwards demonstrates effectively that direct election of the president without a runoff maximizes political equality and eliminates the distortions in the political system caused by the electoral college.

Electoral College Isn't Commonsense Federalism.......2006-05-13
Texas A&M University political science professor George Edwards, III, brings an interesting and thought provoking study with "Why the Electoral College is Bad for America" (2004 paperback). His 198 pages provide significant research (with 21 pages of endnotes and a plethora of helpful graphs, accommodating statistical tables, and informative charts). His resource data alone is worth the cost of the book!
Starting from the premise- the Electoral College has a wide range of advantages and disadvantages for American policy- Edwards precedes to focus on the problems with the 18th century presidential election system. He notes, "the electoral college poses a real potential for deadlock" (page 61). And, of course, the political party in power always appreciates the electoral system while the party out of presidential power wants to altogether eliminate the program.
Encouragement of a third party system (page 140) or direct election by the national populace- or as Bob Dole calls it "commonsense federalism"- (page 121) could provide a better election system. Will the U.S. ever abandon the Electoral College?- probably not.
Although Edwards' seven chapters are informative, his writing style is a bit tedious (his chapters average 30 pages in length!). The book is not necessarily quickly read.
If there is disappointment in this book it is that Edwards allows his Democrat politics to entangle his political theory. He also, disappointingly, too often references contemporary news media (almost a third of his sources from chapter 6 alone are news papers and political periodicals!).
Edwards is a good read. His book explains the role and sometimes abuse of the Electoral College. It is recommendable to all political science readers, students of American history, research collectors, and those interested in the Electoral College.
Excellent analysis, wrong prescription.......2004-10-20
Edwards provides a lucid, devastating critique of the Electoral College and its negative impact on American politics and government. After reading this book it will be hard for people to keep a straight face when defenders of this 18th century institution make such outmoded arguments as "candidates will spend time only in population centers" (as if they don't focus all their energies right now on just a handful of states and as if candidates in all races for governor don't try to win votes wherever they are in a state).
My one disappointment is his recommendation that we enshire the principle of "plurality rule" when directly electing the president. That would mean we could have presidents elected with less than 30% of the vote and would maintain the "spoiler" dynamic for any independent and third party candidate trying to offer new ideas to voters. Far better would be to establish a 50%-plus-one majority requirement as proposed by Congressman Jesse Jackson Jr. and groups like FairVote-The Center for Voting and Democracy -- or at the very least leave it to Congress to decide by statute.
But Edwards' book should help re-start a national conversation about changing the Electoral College -- which as recently in 1969 came close to being abolished after the House voted by a 4-to-1 margin to go to direct election.
