5 out of 5 stars A First Rate Picture of a Great Banker.......1999-12-29

The Ambassador From Wall Street is a fasciating tale of one of the great financial leaders of the 20th Century. As a retired New York banker who started work in 1950 and who held some quite responsible positions, I found the book contained messages for bankers that are as true today as they were in the life of Mr. Lamont, particularly on how to avoid undue risk and how to manage the inevitable messes when they occur. The book seems to have been well researched by the arthor, a Grandson of the subject, and takes us through the many economic and financial developments of the first half of the twentieth century. Its scope allows the reader to have a broad view of the financial world, a useful benefit in this age of globalization. I particularly recommend the book to young students of finance. The lessons learned will enhance their careers.

5 out of 5 stars The Ambassador from Wall Street.......1999-12-17

Alethea W. Hawley's review offers an excellent summary of a well researched account of the life and impact of Mr. Thomas W. Lamont and his importance to the major economic and political powers of his era and why this account deserves a five star rating.

5 out of 5 stars The Ambassador from Wall Street.......1999-12-02

This biography of Thomas W. Lamont, J.P. Morgan's Chief Executive is a thoroughly researched account of the legendary financier during the first half of the twentieth century, when the powerful banking firm was at the pinnacle of international finance. The author, his grandson has written this lively biography based on his independent research and his personal collection of family papers and Thomas Lamont's letters. The reader will become acquainted with the economic and political history of the period, the many crucial world events that were transpiring, as well as a full roster of leaders such as Presidents Franklin Roosevelt, Wilson and Hoover, who all sought advice from Lamont. Along with all of the above, the author portrays the luxurious lifestyle of his grandfather, such as commuting from his home to Wall Street by yacht. There are social vignettes such as a house party at Lady Astor's Cliveden, as well as a Lamont soiree during which a Federal judge broke the nose of Walter Lippman's charming wife. The reader is also given glimpses of such luminaries as Charles Lindbergh and H.G. Wells, who were among Thomas Lamont's close friends. John Kenneth Galbraith praised this volume and characterized it as "affectionate and well researched...We are in debt to Edward Lamont for this literate and thoroughly interesting biography." Book List and Publishers Weekly contributed highly enthusiastic reviews, and recommended it for those interested in history, banking and foreign affairs. Written in a brisk and informative style, Lamont interjects his wit at just the right places so as to present a very balanced, straight forward, and informative piece of work.

    Book Description

A professional hockey player plays in hundreds of games during his career but there is always one game that stands out from the rest -- the game he'll never forget. For Dave Schultz it was beating the Soviet Union after the Central Red Army had embarrassed the NHL's best teams in 1976. Maurice "Rocket" Richard recalls the Leafs-Canadiens game where he scored five goals in a playoff game, single-handedly winning the game. Frank Mahovlich remembers scoring his 500th goal after falling -- not the most beautiful way to reach this career milestone.

But it's not just the incredible victories, career milestones or amazing goals that stand out. Ted Lindsay recalls playing for the Detroit Red Wings while under a death threat. And for Denis Potvin, it was sleeping in and missing a game during his rookie year, a mistake that could have torpedoed his career before it started. Gordie Howe's most memorable game was the first game he played with his sons. Spanning 70 years of hockey, The Game I'll Never Forget is an unique account of some incredible games and the players who played them.

4 out of 5 stars A pretty good guide, although it focuses on the scenarios.......2003-06-16

I bought this guide because I love the game Star Wars: Galactic Battlegrounds (I'll assume anyone who reads this will already have played the game so I won't describe it). I recieved an excerpt with my copy of the game which had the chapter on tips on playing the game (times for moving through tech levels, etc.). I was excited, but slightly disappointed to find that a large portion of the guide details how to get through all the scenarios rather then the normal game, which I was more interested in.

There is the (pretty good) story for the first chapter (although it goes in the some-stormtroopers-are-clones theory, where I go more for the (noncanon?) view detailed by Timothy Zahn's trilogy), and then the book goes into a overview of the main menu (what each button does). The next chapter was the excerpt included in my game (which is a good chapter). After that, detailed stats on every unit/building in the game, and then a neat transcript of a conversation about the different civilizations, along with a tiny chapter on strategies.. Pages 63-175 (out of 204) detail every single scenario. After that is another chat about multiplayer strategies, and then two appendices.

All in all, it is a very handy resource, it just won't replace you playing and finding out how to win yourself.

5 out of 5 stars This game rules.......2002-04-11

This game is awsome if you like strategy war games there are 6 diffrent teams to pick from and there all pretty good the only flaw is that there are that you have to gather 4 diffrent kinds of crystals and stuff but other than that its one of the best starwars games ever. P.S. if you like this you have to check out the computer game starcraft its even better then this one.

2 out of 5 stars Save Your Money.......2002-02-20

This book is just below mediocre in what it provides anyone who would open its covers. I have played AOE I and II a lot, and this book contributed nothing to my knowledge. I was hoping for the simplest of things: A complete listing of each Unit with its statistics, and instead got a first-grade primer on how to play a RTS game. Usually these lists of statistics on the units come in the games Microsoft puts out, but not from LucasArts. I would wait until a better book comes out instead of buying this complete ....... It is a part of the "manual" which should have been included in the game box, especially since the standard manual is lame, too. This support aspect of this game is the worst I have seen come from almost any gaming situation, and a rich company like LucasArts shows its disdain for consumers and gamers alike by packaging this ...... like this....

4 out of 5 stars Great way to get started on your co-op hunt.......2007-04-16

This book has a lot of great details on how to think about buying (and living in) a co-op in New York City. 2 caveats come to mind:

              1) Book is much more suited for you if you're buying in Manhattan. Many of the co-ops in Brooklyn I researched didn't quite match what I expected based on this book.
              2) Though condos are mentioned in the title, the book is really more about co-ops... look elsewhere for details on buying a condo.

5 out of 5 stars It's $13 that you NEED to spend, if you want to buy, bought or are selling an apartment in NY........2005-12-29

              Pros of co-op ownership:
You can actually afford to own something.
You can have a tax write off like normal people.

              Cons of co-op ownership:
              Everything else.

Enter The New York Co-op Bible. I had it, read it, lost it am now purchasing a second copy after looking high and low for the first one I bought. That should tell you something.

I own a co-op in Metro New York. My managing agent is a jerk, to put it mildly. He blames the board, the board blames him - It's this game they play and it successfully achieves getting nothing done. The super does nothing unless you hold a $20 bill in your hand when you ask. My maintenance is very high for my area. I estimate that it is about 30% higher than comparable properties near me.

This unit has a ground floor patio. I have access to about 30 feet of flower bedding (sans flowers) that lines the front of my unit. This is the primary reason that I bought this place 6 years ago. I am all alone here, from the rural South and I wanted a place to call my own and I needed greenery. And I was really eyeing up those beds and my neighbor's "yard" work which was just beautiful - and still is.

I can't plant anything because of excessive drainage - all the dirt washes into the sidewalk. I have been asking for the split gutter to be repaired (all 30 feet of it) for 6 years.

So - I bought this book. Now - this is the most important thing I learned . . .all this strife between me, the board and the management agent falls under Landlord-Tenant law. This made me feel immensely better. Landlord-Tenant law in the state of New York is normally something the courts don't play around with. Maybe I will have one stinking petunia this year.

The book gets 5 stars because it is very good, COMPREHENSIVE and it is the only single source of this much information on this subject that is available. This woman has really performed a public service by writing this book. Everyone, and I mean, EVERYONE who is considering the purchase of an apartment, has already purchased or is trying to sell needs to read this book. You need to know what the author is trying to convey to maintain your financial health and your mental health and possibly avoid a life sentence. :-)

It can be very diappointing, very stressful and you could find yourself feeling helpless and at the mercy of someone else. To get away from that is why you want to buy in the first place. As in everything else in life, average people who have been given authority like to excercise that authority, even if it does make the owner/tenants feel like crap. And then you might get lucky and get a managing agent like mine who is sadistic and has actually brought several of our elderly residents to tears. Nice guy.

By the way, no seller is legally obligated to tell you that the board are boobs and that the managing agent is a cretin. Do your homework, do your homework, do your homework.

So read Ms. Shapiro's book and BELIEVE what she is saying because it is the truth.

To be forwarned is to be forearmed. And being a shareholder of a coop can be war.

              Good luck.

PS - If you need more immediate help, please call your local office of the Attorney General of New York. They publish and will provide additional information regarding your rights under New York State law.

From Sara Midda, the artist whose first book, In and Out of the Garden, evoked all the pleasures of the English garden and received international acclaim, comes a wondrous sketchbook from a year spent in the South of France--an artist's personal journal carried everywhere and crammed with drawings and notions and thoughts surprising and whimsical.

Sara Midda captures the land, the people, the shimmering air--the whole feeling of Provence and the Cote d' Azur and the spell they cast over even those who haven't been. Describing her own work, Sara Midda says: "It is an evocation, an interpretation of the everyday. It is making discoveries about ordinary things. It is not merely landscapes and buildings, but the artifacts that are the bricks and mortar of a culture."

The entire volume is printed on uncoated stock to convey the feeling and texture of an artist's sketchbook.

                5 out of 5 stars What fun!.......2006-10-23

I have always wanted to be more artistic - and this book is inspiring. Midda is truly talented - she creates a world where everyday objects become beautiful and endearing. There pages dedicated to bread - numbers - even a fellow in a blue striped shirt. With a few strokes of a brush, her renderings are indelable. Charming! Wonderful for artists - artist wannabes - armchair travelers - anyone who enjoys a little quirkyness in their lives. Bravo!

5 out of 5 stars Years after seeing it I am still enchanted!.......2006-01-18

In all honesty, I have been enchanted and in love with this book ever since I came here form Poland 12 years ago and saw this work of art in a bookstore.
I didn't have enough money , so silly me, I "visited" the book whenever I took watercolor classes at the nearby art school on the weekends, and I looked through this gorgeous book because it is so whimsical, so beautiful so memorable, and It haunted me untill I finally broke down, saved my pennies and bought it.

                Sara Midda starts her book with some fresh watercolors and a journal type of a book, her first written page reads;

                - "4th Apri 1854 Death of Hippolyte Allibert de Berthisr, botanist from Marseilles, known for his work on the grenium
                -Asparagus season starts
                - April 1764; Smollet writes, "Beginning April, mulberry leaves begin to put forth;the eggs or grains that produce the silk-worm are hatched
                - Orange trees in flower"
                ,,,,

And this glorious artist paints this book which is her diary, her soul and inner core with watercolors of houses, fruits, vegetables, eggs, postal stamps, cuisine, house street bumbers on the sign of the building, plates, gardening utensils, pots and pans and fancy doors when she is at the South of France, she gives us the visual of her daily life filled with luxuries to be able to record the sweet days of summer with wonderful watercolors paintings.

She writes short and fresh phrases but she paints to the point where its love at first sight,

Basically this is a small size coffee book that I love with my whole heart, I think It shaped my future as an artist and I think , as cheesy as it soudns, I tear up when I look at it, it's raw memories.

This is a gorgeous book, and Sara is an exceptional artist, she prduced
numerous books to which she paitns her darling little watercolor pieces of art.
As an artist this is a must have, but as a human, this is balm on your soul.
                Lovely!!!

Having spent three summers in the South of France, I can say the the light touch of her watercolours and the insight into the culture is perfect. Ms. Midda captures all of the pleasure and repose of that part of the world in a simple, elegant manner that is the life to be lived there.

"Mr. Fetzer and Mr. Mowday's broad knowledge of the Civil War and their engaging style have succeeded in providing a close and personal look at Fort Delaware's creators and inhabitants."--Leland C. Jennings' Jr. Fort Delaware State Park

During the American Civil War, Fort Delaware housed more than 30,000 Confederate prisoners over the course of three years. In this first-ever study of the POW camp, the authors delve into the issues that everyone on the island confronted: poor drainage, lack of provisions, overcrowding, boredom, disease, and worse. But the men and women forced to endure the harsh conditions also determined to carve out a community--to not only survive, but perhaps even thrive. This remarkable story of that community will shatter all previously held ideas about life in a Civil War POW camp.

Dale Fetzer Jr. has been a technical adviser for numerous films, including Gettysburg, Glory, and Andersonville. He is the lead historical interpreter for Fort Delaware State Park.

Bruce E. Mowday, a contributing editor to Military Images magazine, is a journalist with more than 25 years of experience, having written thousands of newspaper and magazine articles.

4 out of 5 stars Writes A Missing Page of Civil War History.......2000-09-14

Fetzer has written and interesting and well researched book on Ft. Delaware, located on Pea Patch Island in the Delaware River.

For the Delaware enthusiast, this book will fascinate. For the Civil War buff, this book provides an interesting view of post life and northern prison administration -- topics not well covered in the popular literature.

Pea Patch Island was recognized as a crucial spot on which to construct a down river defense to America's great port at Philadelphia as early as the Revolution. Then bureaucracy, sloth and quabbles over funding delayed construction of this "vital" defensive bastion for more than half a century. It must be recognized though, that this was no easy constructin job. Pea Patch Island is a low lying mud deposit without solid foundation. The fort eventually came to rest on more than six thousand timber pilings, all of which had to be driven by pile drivers of the 1800's.

Immediately upon it's occupation, prisoners of state and then surrendered Confederates began arriving and Ft. Delaware's historic mission -- wholly unintended -- as a major Union prisoner of war camp was realized.

What Fetzer does well is provide this neglected story with some flavor and detail. We learn about the constructin of the Fort, daily life of both prisoners, guards and attendant civilians, the personalities who commanded, built or were remanded to the fort and the way in which Ft. Delaware did its duty in the Civil War.

Fetzer provides some interesting details and analysis. I had never known how the island got its name, an interesting story that Fetzer tells. Significantly, those who view Ft. Delaware as "the Andersonville of the North" will be enlightened and realize that while death was a possibility in such crowded conditions among the South's often diseased and malnourished troops (they arrived that way), the death rate was not even close to that realized in the South's prisoner of war camps. In addition, the commanders at Ft. Delaware provided covered housing, fresh water, regular meals, medical care and a camp hospital -- features all lacking or practically useless at the real Andersonville.

All in all, this is an iteresting little book and a must for anyone who collects Delawareanna.

5 out of 5 stars The truth be told!.......2000-08-28

With stories of men dying of disease, succumbing to the elements and living life from mouthful to mouthful one would think that Fort Delaware was indeed the "Andersonville of the North". In its heyday over 16,00 men were held prisoner on this lonely island known as "Pea Patch" with more than 30,000 Confederates passing through its gates in just over three years. Yet, the true story of life behind the stockade walls was lost to history, until Mr. Fetzer and Mr. Mowday came together and published "Unlikely Allies". By using newly found primary source material the reader gains insight into the lives of those who had to eke out an existent on the island.

Prior to the 1760's no written account indicated that there was any stretch of land in the middle of the Delaware River. However, around the same stretch of time, local legend has it that a sailing vessel loaded with peas ran aground on an uncharted shoal and spilled its contents into the Delaware. These peas found the small mud flat to their liking and took root upon the shoal and pea patches began to sprout. As they continued to grow so did the island, giving rise to the local name Pea Patch.

During an expedition to the area, Maj. Pierre Charles L'Enfant, chief engineer of the U.S. Army looked out over the Delaware River and settled his gaze upon the small bit of exposed mud and sand, he came to call "Pip Ash" Island. After his brief exploit to the island he wrote on 16 May 1794 to the secretary of war: " . . .went to the Pip Ash a bank forming an island opposite Eagle and Reedy Points. This pass should be well armed . . . I recommend a fort on Pip Ash, and batteries at New Castle . . .." He further noted, " . . . it cannot be questioned but that pass may be well armed, and that proper works erected there would protect the whole bank." So, with the wheels of defense set in motion, this desolate strip would be transformed in a community that survived all that Mother Nature threw at them, but the name Pip Ash was forgotten and the name Pea Patch stuck.

In knowing little about Fort Delaware, and going off what I've briefly read I had come to the conclusion that it was a harsh and bitter prison, but in reality life was just about the same for the guards as it was for the prisoners. Aside from the status of being labeled a prisoner, most everyone on this little island was held captive. Life was not pleasant but it was tolerable. The death rate among POWs was equal to the death rate from disease among civilians. Yet, life was not as bitter as stated by previous residents. True, some guards were ill mannered but overall the background of material presented in this work shows that the guards handed out humane treatment in most cases. In looking at the words of one prisoner, a Reverend Handly, he tells of comrades hanging by their thumbs, acute starvation, and enforced labor, yet his wife was allowed to come to Pea Patch and take up room and board at Mrs. Patterson's Inn and eventually visit with him. Not too bestial if you ask me.

This is a well-written and researched work on Fort Delaware. The authors put together sound research mirrored with quality writing to give the reader an enjoyable journey into the past. Cover to cover the reader will discover that human interest has been successfully merged with historical research. This work reads well, was hard to put down, and did not drag on into over exacting details and logistics. I highly recommend this book to anyone curious about fortifications and prisons during the Civil War.

I read the book unlikly allies, which i thought was very well written by Herr Fetzer. He truly has written a book, that is perfect for anyone who asks "Can you tell me about Fort Delaware" This book does tell you basically everything you want to know about fort delaware and what went on with the people who lived their lives on that island. this book should be number 1!

                  5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Find!.......2000-05-02

This book was absolutly amazing. I am very interested in the Civil War, and only knew some basic facts about Fort Delaware. I have visited the fort, which is open to the public as a Delaware State Park, and was amazed. I met Mr. Fetzer and he is an incredible man, as are the rest of the reenactors there. The book is an extension of the knowledge I recieved during my visit. The way the book was orginized was ingenious. I am amazed at all the fascinating things that went on at Fort Delaware, as I am with the different kinds of relationships and personalities the officers had. The island became a city, and it is amazing to me the circumstances which the people on Pea Patch Island during the Civil War had to deal with and the events that occured. This is an absolutly wonderful book. I read it several weeks ago and have since reread it several times. I have reccomended it to my own friends. I am sure you will enjoy this book as I have. My complements to Mr. Fetzer as well as Mr. Mowday.

                  5 out of 5 stars Astonishing - A great read.......2000-04-06

Having lived in Delaware all my life I was surprised to see a book about Fort Delaware during the Civil War - there has never been one and I truly thought Fort Delaware was a back water facility. I received this book as a birthday present and, frankly, am not what you consider a history buff. But when I started I could not put it down. It was fascinating - I had no idea that all this stuff happened in my own back yard. The book is obviosly well researched and extremely well written. This information is also new...the authors really went out for the research and tell a story of hope and survival and compassion. I think that everybody should read this book. I consider it a ground breaking study...I truly hope more books will be written by Mr. Fetzer and Mr. Mowday.

Demand for practical knowledge and lessons about how the United States and other countries can more effectively promote democracy around the world has never been higher. This timely book by Thomas Carothers, one of the foremost authorities worldwide on democracy building, helps meet that need. Critical Mission draws together a wide-ranging set of Carothers's many seminal, widely cited essays, organized around four vital themes:

                    1. the role of democracy promotion in U.S. foreign policy
                    2. the core elements of democracy aid
                    3. the state of democracy in the world
                    4. the new U.S. push to promote democracy in the Middle East

From puncturing myths about promoting civil society to sizing up the prospects for democracy in the Arab world, Carothers is consistently penetrating, incisive, and challenging to policymakers, democracy activists, and scholars alike. The book also includes the only up-to-date, comprehensive bibliography on democracy promotion.

The quest for gold has ravaged countless landscapes around the world, and miniature gold rushes are now exacting a high ecological toll in places such as the Amazon and far eastern Siberia. Richard Manning, an environmental journalist, covers different ground in One Round River, a case study of a gold consortium's campaign to open a mine on the Big Blackfoot River of Montana. Such a mine, he writes, would effectively destroy the river for the short-term gain of just a few people. His argument is cogent and convincing; One Round River is a fine case study of the struggle to preserve wild places.

5 out of 5 stars I've given this book to all of my family.......1998-12-03

Richard Manning has made me think of my home land in a new way. One Round River should be required reading for those of us who live or want to live in the West, as well as for everyone who uses the fruit of the West - lumber, beef, and especially gold. The message in this book is so important and so well written that I have made my family and friends read it too!

5 out of 5 stars A voice for the New West built on the reality of the past........1998-06-17

Richard Manning understands the people, and the places, he speaks of in his sharp discussion about mining and its effects on the new (and old) Montana. Were we truly to learn from the past so ably told in One Round River, modern gold mining practice would be outlawed. Would that this could be true... A more honest connection with the Montana landscape, and the lives its people (of all types) will be hard to find. Buy the book. If anything because it's a good read.

5 out of 5 stars This book is awesome !.......1998-03-07

Few of us experience life as passionately as Richard Manning: a writer, hiker, fisherman, and nature lover...with an ability to put it all into words. He is our modern day Norman McLean...and I enjoyed 'One Round River' immensely. I can not recommend a book more highly...a 10+++.
